ARVIND KEJRIWAL to take oath as Delhi CM on Feb 14

Sisodia likely to be Dy CM,  Four new faces expected in AAP Cabinet

NEW DELHI (TIP): Exactly one year after he had resigned as Delhi Chief Minister, AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal will be taking oath as the CM again on February 14 at Ramlila Maidan.

“Arvind Kejriwal will take oath as the Delhi Chief Minister on February 14 at Ramlila Maidan,” AAP leader Ashutosh said after the party’s landslide victory in the Delhi Assembly polls.

Kejriwal emerged victorious in the high-profile New Delhi constituency by handing over a crushing defeat to BJP’s Nupur Sharma by a huge margin of 31,583 votes.

After AAP had thrown a surprise by uprooting Congress out of power in 2013 Assembly elections as a debutant party, Kejriwal had taken oath as Delhi’s seventh Chief Minister on December 28 at a public ceremony in the historic Ramlila Maidan, the venue of the Lokpal movement.

He had defeated the three-time Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dixit on her home-turf by a margin of 25,864 votes.

However, after serving the government for 49 days, he had resigned on February 14 last year after his push for the anti-corruption Jan Lokpal Bill was blocked in the state Assembly by BJP and Congress.

  • China backs bigger role for India, Brazil at UNSC

China backs bigger role for India, Brazil at UNSC

BEIJING (TIP): China said it respects the aspirations of India and Brazil to play bigger roles at the UN Security Council, while keeping mum on Japan’s candidature.

About the Indian and Brazilian applications to become permanent members, China respects the willingness of the two countries to play a bigger role in the UN body, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said.

Hua, however, told reporters that Beijing would like to reach a “broadest consensus through diplomatic means” on UNSC reform.

She was replying to a question whether Beijing backs Brazil to become a permanent member of the UNSC in the backdrop of China and Russia supporting India’s candidature at a recent Russia, India, China (RIC) foreign ministers meeting here.

The joint statement after the meeting attended by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said: “Foreign Ministers of China and Russia reiterated the importance they attached to the status of India in international affairs and supported its aspiration to play a greater role in the United Nations.”

Hua said China pays high attention to the desire of Brazil to play bigger role in the UNSC.

India along with Brazil, Germany and Japan together staked their claims for permanent membership of the UNSC as part of a larger reform of the United Nations.

While China has backed India for a bigger role at the UN, it has expressed reservations in the past over Japan becoming a permanent member in view of the political and historical issues between the two countries.

China-Japan ties have deteriorated following a row over the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, and also over some history-related issues.

In December 2013, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited the Yasukuni Shrine — which honours not only the nation’s 2.5 million war dead but also 14 Class-A war criminals from World War II.

  • ANNA HAZARE TO ADDRESS FARMERS’ RALLY AGAINST LAND ACQUISITION IN DELHI

ANNA HAZARE TO ADDRESS FARMERS’ RALLY AGAINST LAND ACQUISITION IN DELHI

NEW DELHI (TIP): Social activist Anna Hazare, who has been critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will be in Delhi on February 24 to participate in a farmers’ rally being held to protest against the government’s ordinance on land acquisition.

Sources close to Hazare said the social activist will address the dharna at Jantar Mantar. A few farmers’ organisations from North India have joined hands to oppose the Land Acquisition Act. Activists Dr PV Rajgopal and Medha Patkar have launched the agitation.

Hazare is scheduled to join the dharna for a few hours and address the farmers. He is expected to return to Ralegan Siddhi next day after staying the night in Delhi, sources said.

This decision comes two days after Hazare’s bitterly criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, holding him responsible for Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) debacle in the Delhi Assembly elections. He remarked that the Modi government had lost its credibility on the issue black money, land acquisition and anti-poor policies.

Though the sources add that Hazare has no any other engagements in Delhi, they have not ruled out a meeting with Delhi chief minister designate Arvind Kejriwal. Once a prominent member of Team Anna, Kejriwal is likely to meet him during his stay in the national capital.

Sources close to Hazare said he had a telephonic conversation with Kejriwal on the day the Assembly elections results were declared. Though he initially refused to attend phone calls from Kejriwal, Hazare spoke to him in the afternoon. The Delhi CM designate invited Hazare for swearing-in ceremony, but he refused to associate himself with any political outfit.

    Team Anna will be back

Hazare has launched a fight against the Modi government on three issues – the Land Acquisition Act, black money and Lokpal Bill.

He had already expressed his displeasure for the government not taking any action on the Lokpal Bill, passed by the Parliament. He has written two letters to the PM in this regard. He has also announced to the re-launch of Team Anna to boost his efforts.

Friends of MP Conclave draws thousands

NEW YORK CITY (TIP): “I am here to make friends”, said Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, amid applause from the audience, at the Friends of MP conclave at the iconic Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City, February 1.

Despite inclement weather more than 3000 people traveled to the centre of New York  to cheer Shivraj Singh Chouhan, when he arrived here to launch the initiative to connect the global  citizens with Madhya Pradesh and India. On the second day of his six-day visit to the tri-state area on  the US East Coast, Chauhan formally launched the Friends of Madhya Pradesh initiative (www.friendsofmp.com).

The website is the  first of its kind of initiative by any state in the country following suggestion by  Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi that sought the creation of a global talent pool as a network of its friends anywhere in the world.

Amid claps of a full house filled with NRIs, state senators, US congressmen and congresswomen, and other important business and community leaders from across New York, New Jersey, Long Island, Connecticut and other neighborhoods, beats of drums and dholaks, the fluttering of national flag, Chief Minister  and guests on the dais formally inaugurated the website friendsofmp.com by putting hands on the globe that symbolized the connected world and with that the site went live on a giant screen right above the stage.

In his half-hour Hindi speech interrupted by loud applauses at several intervals and slogans in praise of Bharat Mata (Mother India) on various occasions, the chief minister stated that his government for the last decade has not only been undertaking welfare measures, but also useful employment-generating programs that have changed the face of the state.

With GDP at  11.08 percent and more than 20%   rise in agricultural production in the last several years, the state has become one of the fastest growing states in the country.

Citing estimates and positive outlook, he said India would soon overtake China in economic growth and Madhya Pradesh will take a significant part in that process.

He mentioned that after Narendra Modi became the prime minister in May 2014, the self-confidence level of Indians-inside and outside the country-has risen in a significant way. Now  no longer the “policy paralysis”, the hallmark of the previous government, exists at the Center and in states. He added that Modi is not just the leader of India, but he is on the path to becoming a world leader. He spoke of the assets of his state-  a 24-hour power supply, availability of enough water, and calm and peaceful industrial climate. Around 26,000 hectares of land bank has been created to cater for potential investment and industrial opportunities. Steps are being taken to ensuring up to 30 percent police force is female in order to tackle more efficiently the crimes being perpetrated against women.

He spoke about several issues that included religious harmony, America-India relations, and BJP’s determination in providing good governance and clean administration.

Chief Minister  honored the recipients  of recent Padma awards on the occasion and praised their contributions and sought their services to India in general and the central state in particular.

“I bring the best wishes of 7.5 crore (75 million) residents of Madhya Pradesh to you all,” he said. “You contributed to this society immensely and now you must do the same to India, your motherland.”

  • J&K government formation: Mufti to meet PM Modi soon to ‘seal the deal’

J&K government formation: Mufti to meet PM Modi soon to ‘seal the deal’

NEW DELHI (TIP): Jammu and Kashmir’s wait for a new government is likely to get over as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are poised to join hands and form a coalition soon.

Sources said that the PDP patron and former chief minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed  will be meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a formal announcement will be made in the next few days.

Sayeed would be the chief minister of the alliance and an agreement had been reached between the two parties on a Common Minimum Programme(CMP) and contentious issues like Article 370, displaced Kashmiri Pandits and uniform civil code had been thrashed out, said sources.

PDP, which has 28 MLAs in the 87-member Assembly, has formed a team of six people to begin the structured dialogue with the BJP. It includes MPs Muzzafar Hussain Baig and Tariq Hameed Qara, chief spokesman Naeem Akthar, MLAs Hasseb Drabu and Altaf Bhukari and Vikramaditya Singh all of whom will be arriving in the national capital tomorrow.

The team is expected to meet Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Friday, who was nominated by the BJP along with Arun Singh, for negotiating with parties in the state for government formation, sources said. BJP has 25 MLAs in the state Assembly.

This may be followed by a meeting between Sayeed and Modi to seal the deal, sources said.

BJP has in-principle agreed for a six-year term for Sayeed while the party will hold the post of Deputy Chief Minister which is expected to be given to state BJP leader Nirmal Singh.

After hectic negotiations between the two parties in Mumbai and Chandigarh, it was agreed that PDP will keep the Home portfolio and BJP may get the finance.

Akthar said the results were an opportunity for both PDP as well as BJP to bring normalcy to the state.

Asked about a possible Sayeed-Modi meeting, he said “nothing is scheduled”.

“For us, finalisation of government has to be preceded by a CMP which is must. What will be the use of the government which will not be able to deliver on the ground,” he said, adding, “once the CMP is finalised, the government formation will be purposeful.”

PDP had been offered support by National Conference which has 15 MLAs and Congress which has 12 to form the government but it started negotiations with BJP, which made historic electoral gains in the state for the first time.

If the two parties agree over the nitty-gritties then this would be the first time that the BJP would be part of a government in the Valley.

  • Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar to visit Pakistan

Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar to visit Pakistan

NEW DELHI  (TIP): Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar will soon visit Pakistan in what will mark the first official high-level contact between the two countries since Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif visited India last year for his counterpart Narendra Modi’s oath-taking.

The decision to send Jaishankar to Pakistan though is another South Asia outreach by PM Narendra Modi which will see India’s top diplomat visiting all SAARC countries. Sources said they didn’t want to speculate about dates for Jaishankar’s visit to Pakistan. Modi himself informed his counterpart Nawaz Sharif about the decision to resume foreign secretary level dialogue with Pakistan. India had last year scheduled the same dialogue with Pakistan in August last year but cancelled it at the last moment after Pakistan high commissioner chose to meet Hurriyat leaders.

Islamabad has maintained all along since then that India would have to take the initiative for any resumption of dialogue between the two countries.

  • Man with a soiled image in India and a hidden fortune in New York

Man with a soiled image in India and a hidden fortune in New York

NEW YORK (TIP): Kabul Chawla, the owner of real estate firm BPTP, rose to fame when his company outbid DLF in buying a land parcel in Noida for over Rs 5,000 crore in 2008. It was one of the biggest land deals at that time. However, it quickly became untenable as the real estate sector went into a tailspin and Chawla had to dispose of a large chunk of the land at a discount.

In 2015, he has grabbed the headlines once again for buying a condominium in a super-luxury apartment in New York for over $19 million. The deal has thrown Chawla in the spotlight, but this time it has cast an unsavory light.

Chawla’s real estate company in India is facing the ire of consumers over delivery delays and poor quality of construction. At the heart of it is a project meant for military officers in Gurgaon. His company has collected over 100 per cent of the price from about 400 buyers for the project which is estimated to be worth $35 million. But even six years later it has not been completed. BPTP has also pre-sold 10,685 apartments and 5,657 residential plots in a project named Parklands. But even here vacant plots greet buyers.

The company’s website, which was last updated in 2012, lists about 18 residential projects and six commercial projects in the National Capital Region. According to an earlier release, BPTP was implementing over 12 projects on nearly 2,500 acres that together generated sales of $1.6 billion. However, most of its 22,000 customers have been left high and dry, with their life-savings stuck in incomplete projects.

What has left buyers particularly aggrieved is that Chawla has been busy amassing a fortune in the US. Of the 192 condos at the Time Warner Center, nearly two-thirds are owned by him through shell companies, according to a New York Times investigation. The latest deal is a 4,050 sq ft condominium with five bedrooms, a media/playroom and soaring ceilings on the 68th floor of the in the south tower of the Time Warner complex. While Chawla has denied owning the apartment, The New York Times investigation says it was bought by him in 2012. The investigators have unearthed correspondence among real estate brokers involved in the apartment’s purchase, as well as other sources, tying the condo to him.

Born and brought up in Karnal in Haryana, Chawla started BPTP from scratch and built a name for himself in less than five years. His peers in the industry saw him as a dynamic builder who understood every aspect of the business, be it construction, law or design. He is also known to be deeply religious and loves going on thanksgiving trips to the shrine of Vaishnodevi and other holy places following a mega deal.

Many say he acquired a good land bank well before the slowdown started but he began to falter because of his habit of playing fast and loose. “Funds from one project were diverted to launching another project and projects were abandoned midway, leading to the downfall of the company,” says a real estate consultant.

  • Special Immigrant Juvenile Status

    Special Immigrant Juvenile Status

Throughout its history, the United States has been a refuge for oppressed people from around the world. The Pilgrims, the Quakers, the Amish, and countless others came to this country in centuries past, while in the more recent past immigrants have been Cubans, Jews, Southeast Asians, and others. What those diverse people shared was a belief that America could offer them refuge from government oppression. The United States has always been at the forefront of protection issues, and traditionally has granted sanctuary to victims of human rights abuses from around the world. This refuge or protecting in the USA, however, is not limited to   victims of political oppression but also is available to those who are victims of domestic violence and abuse specially minors. With an objective to provide protection to these minors who are victims of domestic abuse, Congress, in 2008, enacted a new statute, the William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2008, (TVPRA 2008). The statute expands the definition of Special Immigrant Juvenile so that more children can qualify for the status, provides greater protections from aging out, removes additional grounds of inadmissibility to lawful permanent residence, and requires the US government  to process the cases within 180 days for those undocumented youth who qualify for SIJS. The Trafficking Victims Protection and Reauthorization Act  has expanded the definition of Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) to allow undocumented immigrant youth to petition for legal status based on abuse, neglect, or abandonment by one or both parents. SIJS waives unlawful entry, working without authorization, status as a public charge, and certain immigration violations. Once a minor receives SIJS, he/she will be able to adjust his/her status to that of a lawful permanent resident, obtain work authorization, and eventually apply for U.S. citizenship. To be eligible under SIJS, one must be (a) under 21 at the time of filing, (b) Currently must be unmarried, and (c) Must be present in the United States.

Further, SIJS  visa program is different from other types of visas in that it requires coordination with a state family or Surrogate court. Special Immigrant Juvenile Status has two prong tests. First, the minor has to engage in a custody/adoption proceedings in the Family or Surrogate’s Court in the county where he/she resides. As part of this proceeding, the court is to find minor’s eligibility for SIJS. Besides a  guardianship petition, it is also possible to file a petition requesting an order though a custody, neglect, adoption, permanency hearing for children in foster care etc., proceeding. An order from a Family Court or Surrogate Court granting custody/adoption is a pre-requisite to applying for SIJS status. On February 5, 2014, the New York Appellate Division, Second Department, stated that New York State Family Courts do in fact have the authority to appoint a natural parent to be the guardian of his or her own children. The court explained that under the Surrogate’s Court Procedure Act, any person may petition for guardianship of an infant. SCPA §1703. Therefore, the court reasoned that since the statute does not impose any limitations, appointment of guardianship may also be granted to a natural parent. The court’s reasoning was based upon prior decisions involving contests for guardianship between a natural parent and a relative or nonrelative of a child, where the natural parent has been named as the guardian or co-guardian of the child. Matter of Revis v. Marzan (100 AD 3d 1004); Matter of Justina S.(180 AD 2d 641).

One is to keep in mind that a state Family court and/or Surrogate court that grants custody/adoption petition does not make any immigration decision. After receiving this order from the Family or Surrogate’s Court, one has to go through the second stage, i.e., the one is to then apply to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) for SIJS. Though USCIS one will get SIJS that would bestow upon the child lawful permanent residence and work authorization.

Whether one receives one’s special immigrant juvenile visa and green card concurrently or applies for an adjustment of status after your SIJ application is approved, one generally receives most of the same rights and privileges as other lawful permanent residents. If the petition is approved and the child becomes a lawful permanent resident, he or she will have access to financial aid for college, be able to work legally, be eligible for some public benefits, and be able to apply for US citizenship five years after becoming a permanent resident. However; one is to keep in mind that the granting of SIJ status is based on allegations of abuse, abandonment or neglect by the applicant’s parents, a person who receives a green card or even ultimately citizenship through the SIJ program cannot petition for a green card on behalf of those parents. Moreover, SIJ program participants cannot petition on behalf of their siblings until they become U.S. citizens through naturalization.

“Immigration law is extremely complicated-and with children, more so,” says Lenni Benson, a New York Law School professor and director of Safe Passage, a nonprofit that provides legal assistance to immigrant children in the state. Since expertise in both the family law and immigration law is required for SIJS, therefore, it’s better to retain the services of a competent attorney for these cases.

MTA Public Workshop on February 26th to consider expanded bus service

NEW YORK (TIP): State Senator Tony Avella announced, February 12 that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) will conduct a public workshop to discuss how the agency can improve public transportation in northeast Queens.

The meeting is part of a district-wide study set forth last year when Senator Avella allocated $500,000 from the State Executive Budget to allow the MTA to look into expanding bus service in the area.

The February 26thpublic workshop will give residents the opportunity to interact directly with MTA officials and voice their concerns with current transportation throughout northeast Queens as well as suggest ways that it can be improved.

“When the MTA’s budget crisis led to significant service reductions across the city five years ago, my district was one of the hardest-hit areas affected by the cuts. Northeast Queens is severely ignored and underserved by the city’s public transportation system and major improvements are needed in order to meet the needs of my constituents. I applaud the MTA for not only moving forward with this study, but for giving residents the chance to directly communicate their grievances with the MTA to high-level officials,” said Senator Avella.

The focus of the bus study includes every neighborhood in Senator Avella’s district, which includes Flushing, Whitestone, Bay Terrace, Bayside, Bayside Hills, College Point, Oakland Gardens, Douglaston, Glen Oaks, Fresh Meadows, Little Neck, Mitchell-Linden, Bowne Park, Beechurst, Bellerose, Fort Totten, Malba, Robinwood, Auburndale, Floral Park, Hollis Hills, Queens Village, Jamaica, Jamaica Estates and New Hyde Park.

The public workshop will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Thursday, February 26th, in the lobby of the Student Union at Queensborough Community College, 222-05 56th Avenue, Bayside.

Melva’s ideas, professionalism and experience in government have been tremendous assets to my administration. For the communities, her focus is relentless, her passion is unwavering. • London Fire Brigade prepares for an unusual enemy – handcuffs

LONDON (TIP): The London Fire Brigade is preparing for an unusual enemy – handcuffs.

Fire chiefs in Britain have expressed serious concern that the new Fifty Shades of Grey film could lead to more people being stuck or trapped in objects like handcuffs or rings.

In 2013/14, firefighters attended 472 incidents involving people being trapped or stuck, often in everyday household items. Official records show this trend has steadily increased year on year since the Fifty Shades of Grey books were release. The Brigade started a campaign called Fifty Shades of Red, asking people to think carefully before getting themselves into sticky situations. Despite the campaign, the Brigade are still called to more than one embarrassing incident every day.

Since April 2013 the capital’s fire crews have been called out to 28 incidents involving people being trapped in handcuffs.

The Brigade said on the eve of the release of the film “Each incident costs taxpayers at least £295, meaning the incidents over the past three years have cost £388,810”.

Third Officer, Dave Brown, said “The Fifty Shades effect seems to spike handcuff incidents so we hope film goers will use common sense and avoid leaving themselves red faced”.

The Brigade issued top tips to help people avoid getting into tricky situations.

It said “Common sense is needed – if it doesn’t look safe, it probably isn’t, so don’t do it. If you use handcuffs, always keep the keys handy”.

The film, based on the novel by EL James, has been described as a “mummy-porn romance” and follows an affair between student Anastasia Steele and billionaire Christian Grey.

  • US WELCOMES IMF DEAL ON AID TO UKRAINE

WASHINGTON (TIP): The United States welcomed on Thursday the International Monetary Fund’s announcement of a new $17.5 billion bailout deal for Ukraine, urging the crisis-torn country to undertake the reforms required by the programme.

“Fully implemented, this ambitious IMF program will play an important role in helping to unleash Ukraine’s considerable untapped economic potential,” said Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew in a statement.

The IMF on Thursday gave preliminary approval of a $17.5 billion four-year loan in exchange for economic reforms.

The new loan replaces a previous two-year, $17 billion program announced in April that has proven inadequate to stabilize Ukraine’s finances as the country fights a pro-Russia insurgency in the industrialized east.

In total, Kiev is expected to receive$40 billion in aid from the international community. A cease-fire agreement between Ukraine and the rebels was announced Thursday, with the truce to take effect Sunday.

“The United States, along with its international partners, remains committed to ensuring that Ukraine has the financial and technical assistance it needs as it undertakes its far-reaching reform program,” Lew said.

In mid-January, the United States pledged a new loan guarantee of $2 billion on condition that Ukraine remained on track with its IMF program.

Two IMF programs for Ukraine, in 2008 and 2010, had been abandoned after the Ukrainian authorities refused to implement unpopular reforms, including ending subsidies for the gas sector.

  • Was BJP’s Loss In Delhi Intelligently Planned?

Was BJP’s Loss In Delhi Intelligently Planned?

There were enough signs to indicate what you see in Delhi may not be true at all.

BJP is a very well organized outfit with sympathizers in every layer of government, judiciary, media, commerce and industry. It is unlikely all this is happening due to poor management. Then is all this ‘bad management’ part of a deliberate plan to lose Delhi? A lot actually.

    Here are some reasons why:

1: BJP inducted three rejects of India Against Corruption movement and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) into its fold — Kiran Bedi projected as BJP’s chief ministerial candidate, Shazia Ilmi and Vinod Kumar Binni. As per plans Bedi is BJP’s scapegoat to save Modi’s image.

2: Kejriwal’s Delhi WIN will be projected as a victory of a mass movement, media will eulogize Kejriwal, hail him as a hero and will dissect AAP’s campaign for days. Also this will divert attention of the people who are getting restless from Modi’s inability to deliver on his election promises.

3: Kejriwal will have no honeymoon period, both media and voters will demand immediate results, at least on corruption, power tariffs, VAT (value added tax), health hotline and WiFi. A hostile government at the Centre will not help him either. This spotlight on Kejriwal will come as a huge relief for Modi.

4: Sangh Parivar machinery can now unleash its foot soldiers to polarize voters with low-intensity disturbances ahead of the two big battles — Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Bihar.

5: BJP’s top brass is aware that if the party plans to win Delhi, the state will remain a headache — partly due to Kejriwal in opposition and partly because of impatient voters who expect immediate results and good governance, something the BJP is unsure of delivering. Proving that losing Delhi isn’t such a bad idea!

6: Now BJP can deploy numerous tactics to not let Kejriwal do what he want’s thus proving him a failure in Delhi. BJP team knows that many of the promises by kejriwal are impractical and cannot be fulfilled and this will snatch his ‘Nayak'(Hero) image.

7: This undeliverable performance of Kejriwal will surely break his image through out the country making him unpopular in other states limiting his scope in next Lok Sabha Elections.

8: Now the One-Man-Army AAP will not be able to spread itself in other states nationwide because the face(Kejriwal) of party will be busy managing Delhi for next 5 years. And there is no other mob-attractor face in AAP.

9: BJP knows that if they win Delhi, Kejriwal in Opposition will make their life hell and will criticize their every action if its not the best one.

10: Now the media houses have 2 faces Modi and Kejriwal to criticize. BJP knows this will surely save Modi from being the only target of media & mass criticism.

How tables have changed – Delhi Elections

In a dramatic change of events in the Delhi Assembly Elections, the results have swinged totally in favor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) the now well known anti-corruption party has won a stunning victory in the Delhi state elections in a huge setback for India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

    [quote_center]Mr. Kejriwal’s party won 67 of the 70 assembly seats[/quote_center]

Mr Kejriwal told cheering party supporters that the “people of Delhi have achieved something spectacular”.

“With the help of people, we will make Delhi a city which both poor and rich will feel proud of,” he said.

As supporters showered him with rose petals, Mr Kejriwal said the huge mandate was “very scary and we should live up to people’s expectations”.

Emergency contraceptive pill is a pill used by women after having an unprotected intercourse (sex), to prevent her from getting pregnant. It is also known as morning after pill or postcoital pill. However, morning after pill is a misleading term, because it can be used immediately after having sex or within 72 hours of having sex. With constant research this method has been developed which is very effective in preventing unwanted pregnancy with very less side effects and is very easy to use also.

    [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

Miss.xyz, 22yrs came with severe pain in the abdomen for over 2 hours. On a regular enquiry into her history, she menstruated 10 days back which was less in amount as compared to her previous cycles. In closer enquiry, she confirmed that she had taken an emergency contraception after an episode of unprotected sex. I investigated further and diagnosed her to have ruptured right sided tubal pregnancy. As a result she was advised and had to undergo laparoscopic surgery to control the bleeding and was discharged after one day of her stay at the hospital.

    [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]

My discussion in this article is about whether this drug should be made as an over the counter medicine i.e. it can be available without any prescription. There have been lots of discussion about this and there are groups of people both in favor and against.

The argument in favor of it is that many couples would hesitate to take any help from the physician and also have inhibition to take it. Unmarried couple would generally avoid having any discussion about it and therefore avoid going to the physician. With increasing awareness about this method of contraception among the people, if it is not made available without prescription, it would not serve the purpose of being an effective emergency contraception.

Argument against the use making it OTC drug is that it would increase the rate of sexual activity amongst the teenage population. It would also increase the incidence of unprotected intercourse increasing the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases. It would also make the use of regular contraception which provides a better protection less favored.

The new emergency contraceptive pill containing levonrogesterol (1.5 gms), is very effective in preventing intrauterine gestation if taken within 72 hours. The main side effect of it is that it causes nausea, vomiting, giddiness and in few women it can also cause some amount of bleeding after 2-3 days. It is advised not to take it multiple times in the same cycle as it increases the chances of failure. The inadvertent use of over the counter way of use of such pills has made this as one of the new cause of ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy is when the pregnancy is located outside the normal uterine cavity. It is a life threatening condition and also a cause of maternal mortality.

The exact causes of increased ectopic pregnancy in using this contraception are not known. Probably due to
    –   The inherent mechanism of action by which it acts in preventing pregnancy. By reducing the chances of the pregnancy the over all rate of ectopic pregnancy and intrauterine pregnancy is low, but when pregnancy occurs it being ectopic becomes more common.
    –   Levonrogesterol acts on the fallopian tube and decreases the motility of the tubes. As it does not prevent ovulation, any fertilized egg has a tendency of getting implanted in the tube.
    –   This method of contraception does not prevent pelvic infection. Recurrent pelvic infection is the known cause for increased rate of ectopic pregnancy.
    –   Multiple use of emergency contraception in the same cycle decreases the effectiveness of the method and predisposes to increased chances of ectopic pregnancy.

WHO studies have shown that it does not increase the overall rate of ectopic pregnancy. It means that by reducing the chances of pregnancy, it reduces the overall rate of ectopic pregnancy. Yet if pregnancy happens, it is more likely to be ectopic pregnancy than a natural conception.

Emergency contraceptive pill is a novel method of emergency contraception but also a new cause of ectopic pregnancy. I do not support the concept of universal and easy availability of such emergency contraceptive pills until there is adequate sex education in the population. The other methods of contraception which have a higher efficacy and time tested should always be more propagated than this.

Barrier contraception which also provides protection against sexually transmitted diseases is the best choice. Proper use and availability should be more focused upon than using emergency contraceptive pill.

And If emergency contraceptive pill has to be used then it is beneficial to consult a physician at least once before or after the use. Couple needs to be educated upon certain dos and don’ts about the method.

Prevention is better than cure, always. Be safe be happy

No Tendulkar gives Pakistan World Cup hope against India

NEW DELHI (TIP): India go into the World Cup without the reassuring presence of retired batting superstar Sachin Tendulkar for the first time since 1992, which surely must bring relief to arch-rivals Pakistan.

Pakistan have lost all their five World Cup meetings against India and Tendulkar, who featured in all of them, proved a stumbling block on at least four occasions.

India and Pakistan face each other in a high-voltage clash at the Adelaide Oval on February 15 to kickstart their campaigns in the 2015 edition of cricket’s showpiece event.

Tendulkar, who retired in 2013 as the world’s leading run-getter in both Test and one-day cricket, added colour to the World Cup, both literally and metaphorically.

Coloured clothing was introduced to the World Cup when Tendulkar made his tournament debut in Australia and New Zealand in 1992 after the first four editions were played in whites.

  • GANESHA: LORD OF SUCCESS

    GANESHA: LORD OF SUCCESS

Ganesha — the elephant-deity riding a mouse — has become one of the commonest mnemonics for anything associated with Hinduism. This not only suggests the importance of Ganesha, but also shows how popular and pervasive this deity is in the minds of the masses.

    The Lord of Success

The son of Shiva and Parvati, Ganesha has an elephantine countenance with a curved trunk and big ears, and a huge pot-bellied body of a human being. He is the Lord of success and destroyer of evils and obstacles. He is also worshipped as the god of education, knowledge, wisdom and wealth. In fact, Ganesha is one of the five prime Hindu deities (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and Durga being the other four) whose idolatry is glorified as the panchayatana puja.

    Significance of the Ganesha Form

Ganesha’s head symbolizes the Atman or the soul, which is the ultimate supreme reality of human existence, and his human body signifies Maya or the earthly existence of human beings. The elephant head denotes wisdom and its trunk represents Om, the sound symbol of cosmic reality. In his upper right hand Ganesha holds a goad, which helps him propel mankind forward on the eternal path and remove obstacles from the way. The noose in Ganesha’s left hand is a gentle implement to capture all difficulties.

The broken tusk that Ganesha holds like a pen in his lower right hand is a symbol of sacrifice, which he broke for writing the Mahabharata. The rosary in his other hand suggests that the pursuit of knowledge should be continuous. The laddoo (sweet) he holds in his trunk indicates that one must discover the sweetness of the Atman. His fan-like ears convey that he is all ears to our petition. The snake that runs round his waist represents energy in all forms. And he is humble enough to ride the lowest of creatures, a mouse.

    How Ganesha Got His Head

The story of the birth of this zoomorphic deity, as depicted in the Shiva Purana, goes like this: Once goddess Parvati, while bathing, created a boy out of the dirt of her body and assigned him the task of guarding the entrance to her bathroom. When Shiva, her husband returned, he was surprised to find a stranger denying him access, and struck off the boy’s head in rage. Parvati broke down in utter grief and to soothe her, Shiva sent out his squad (gana) to fetch the head of any sleeping being who was facing the north. The company found a sleeping elephant and brought back its severed head, which was then attached to the body of the boy. Shiva restored its life and made him the leader (pati) of his troops. Hence his name ‘Ganapati’. Shiva also bestowed a boon that people would worship him and invoke his name before undertaking any venture.

However, there’s another less popular story of his origin, found in the Brahma Vaivarta Purana: Shiva asked Parvati to observe the punyaka vrata for a year to appease Vishnu in order to have a son. When a son was born to her, all the gods and goddesses assembled to rejoice on its birth. Lord Shani, the son of Surya (Sun-God), was also present but he refused to look at the infant. Perturbed at this behaviour, Parvati asked him the reason, and Shani replied that his looking at baby would harm the newborn. However, on Parvati’s insistence when Shani eyed the baby, the child’s head was severed instantly. All the gods started to bemoan, whereupon Vishnu hurried to the bank of river Pushpabhadra and brought back the head of a young elephant, and joined it to the baby’s body, thus reviving it.

    Ganesha, the Destroyer of Pride

Ganesha is also the destroyer of vanity, selfishness and pride. He is the personification of material universe in all its various magnificent manifestations. “All Hindus worship Ganesha regardless of their sectarian belief,” says D N Singh in A Study of Hinduism. “He is both the beginning of the religion and the meeting ground for all Hindus.”

  • Ronaldo returns for depleted Real in Madrid derby

Ronaldo returns for depleted Real in Madrid derby

MADRID (TIP): World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo returns for a Real Madrid side otherwise stricken by injuries and suspensions as they look to beat Atletico Madrid for the first time in six meetings this season on February 6.

Ronaldo completed his two-game ban for kicking out at Cordoba defender Edimar as the European champions sneaked past Sevilla to open up a four-point lead over Barcelona at the top of the table on Wednesday.

However, victory came at a cost as World Cup star James Rodriguez broke a bone in his right foot that will keep him out for two months, whilst centre-back Sergio Ramos will also be sidelined due to a hamstring problem in the coming weeks.

Left-back Marcelo misses out at the Calderon too after his appeal against his fifth yellow card of the Liga campaign was dismissed on Thursday.

Real boss Carlo Ancelotti is short of defensive options with Pepe also out with a rib injury, but he insisted he has confidence in the inexperienced pairing of Raphael Varane and Nacho in central defence.

“What we lose above all is experience, but sometimes enthusiasm is a good thing,” said Ancelotti.

“The two of them (Varane and Nacho) give me a lot of confidence. Ramos and Pepe are among the best defenders in the world, but I am not worried.”

Atletico have bounced back from their heartbreaking Champions League final defeat at the hands of Real last season to beat them in the Spanish Supercup and Copa del Rey over two legs this season, as well as winning 2-1 at the Bernabeu in La Liga earlier in the campaign.

However, defeat this weekend would see them fall 10 points behind the league leaders and all but end their defence of the title.

“I think it is important because the last games against Atletico weren’t good, so we have to change this bad run,” added Ancelotti.

“It will be a very difficult game, but we want to do something different.

“The motivation is so big for this game being a Madrid derby we don’t need the motivation of leaving Atletico 10 points behind.”

In contrast to the visitors, Diego Simeone has a fully-fit squad to choose from for the first time since November and defender Diego Godin insisted their desire to beat their cross-city rivals hasn’t been diminished by recent success.

  • MICROMAX PIPS SAMSUNG TO TOP SLOT: SURVEY

MICROMAX PIPS SAMSUNG TO TOP SLOT: SURVEY

NEW DELHI (TIP): Low-cost mobile handset player Micromax has emerged as top smartphone seller, displacing Samsung in the fourth quarter of calendar 2014, a survey by a research firm showed on Wednesday, but the Korean giant contested the findings, saying it still maintains the pole position.

Research firm Canalys said Micromax finished the October-December 2014 quarter with a share of 22%whereas Samsung ended the period with 20%. “Micromax has been quicker than its competitors to improve the appeal of devices, for example, by including a wide variety of local languages,” Canalys analyst Rushabh Doshi said, while praising another local vendor, Lava, which launched certain devices with greater battery life in line with market’s requirements. “Vital to success is selling these handsets at low price points to appeal to the bulging mid-level income market in India.”

Canalys said devices priced under Rs 6,000 accounted for 23% of smartphone shipments in the period, while Rs 6,000- 12,000 range, where Micromax had “strong products,” contributed 41%. This is the second instance in recent times that Samsung’s leadership in the Indian mobile phone market has been questioned. CounterPoint Research had said in August last year that for the second quarter of 2014, Micromax had become the leader in India, which included feature and smartphones. It pegged Micromax’s share at 16.6% in the April-June ’14, while giving 14.4% to Samsung.

Asim Warsi, marketing VP (mobile business) for Samsung India, however, disputed the findings of Canalys. “As per the findings of GfK India market research firm, our share and leadership is clear and robust for the fourth quarter of 2014 as well as for the full year,” he said.

  • DEFLATION ALARMS RING LOUDER AS EU, CHINESE FACTORIES STRUGGLE

DEFLATION ALARMS RING LOUDER AS EU, CHINESE FACTORIES STRUGGLE

LONDON/SYDNEY (tip): European and Chinese factories slashed prices in January as production flatlined, heightening global deflation risks that point to another wave of central bank stimulus in the coming year.

While the pulse of activity was livelier in other parts of Asia — Japan, India and South Korea — they too shared a common condition of slowing inflation.

Central banks from Switzerland to Turkey via Canada and Singapore have already loosened monetary policy in the past few weeks.

The European Central Bank also announced a near-trillion-euro quantitative easing programme in a bid to revive inflation and drive up growth, though much of the bloc’s Purchasing Managers’ Index survey was collated before that announcement.

“There are a lot of places where central banks are focusing on easing rather than anything else. In the euro zone the ECB is going all-out now,” said Jacqui Douglas, senior global strategist at TD Securities.

“Looking at the rest of Europe we are expecting more easing from Sweden and Norway, that is where most central banks are leaning right now. There is no real rush to move ahead with rate hikes.”

Markit’s final PMI reading for the euro zone, published on Monday, was 51.0, in line with the flash estimate. Although at a six-month high, it was only just above the 50 mark that separates growth from contraction. In December the index came in at 50.6.

Worryingly for policymakers, firms cut prices in January at the steepest rate since mid-2013. Data on Friday showed annual inflation was a record-equalling low of -0.6 per cent in January across the 19 nations using the euro.

In Britain, manufacturing grew slightly faster but factories cut prices at the fastest pace since 2009. The Bank of England will keep interest rates at a record low until at least October, later than previously thought, a Reuters poll found last week.

“With oil prices having stabilised at around $45 per barrel now, it seems likely that lower oil prices should continue to enable manufacturers to lower prices and so support demand,” said Paul Hollingsworth at Capital Economics.

Still to come later on Monday is a sister manufacturing survey from Markit covering the United States, as well as the Institute for Supply Management’s US factory index, which is forecast to have slipped to 54.5 in January from 55.1.

    Easing China?

Earlier, a pair of surveys from China showed manufacturing struggling at the start of 2015 in the world’s second biggest economy.

The Chinese HSBC/Markit PMI inched up a fraction to 49.7. But of more concern the official PMI, which is biased towards large factories, unexpectedly showed activity shrank for the first time in nearly 2-1/2 years.

The reading of 49.8 in January was down from December’s 50.1 and missed a median forecast of 50.2. The report showed input costs sliding at their fastest rate since March 2009, with lower prices for oil and steel playing major roles.

Ordinarily, cheaper energy prices would be good for China, one of the world’s most intensive energy consumers, but many economists believe the phenomenon is a net negative for Chinese firms because of its impact on demand.

The PMIs only fuelled bets on a weaker yuan and that more monetary easing was in store in Beijing too.

“China still needs decent growth to add 100 million new jobs this year, plus China is entering a rapid disinflation process,” ANZ economists said in a note to clients.

“We (think) the People’s Bank of China will cut the reserve requirement ratio by 50 basis points and cut the deposit rate by 25 basis points in the first quarter.”

The downdraft has also spread into China’s hitherto buoyant services sector, the lone bright spot in the economy last year. Service activity expanded at its lowest level in a year.

Slightly better news came from Japan, where the central bank has been pursuing an aggressive bond-buying campaign for over a year in a bid to revive growth and shake the country out of decades of deflation.

The final Markit/JMMA PMI edged up in January as the sustained weakness of the yen drove up exports. Improving exports were also a feature of South Korea’s PMI which returned to growth for the first time in five months.

India’s manufacturing activity continued to grow, though the headline index eased a touch but importantly for the prospect of more policy stimulus, cost pressures were the mildest in 70 months as commodity prices fell.

  • INDIA’S WAR ON INFLATION STILL NOT WON, SAYS RAGHURAM RAJAN

INDIA’S WAR ON INFLATION STILL NOT WON, SAYS RAGHURAM RAJAN

MUMBAI (tip): The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) still has a way to go in fighting inflation and it is important that the central bank has the credibility to bring down inflation if it picks up, Governor Raghuram Rajan said in an interview with a domestic newspaper.

“People say we have won the war on inflation. I am not so confident. What we need to aim for is that if there are supply shocks in future, they don’t increase inflationary expectations. We should be able to see through those shocks. That is when I would say we have won,” Rajan said in an interview.

Rajan’s words of caution come a few days after the RBI held interest rates steady in its latest policy review after a surprise inter-meeting rate cut last month.

Rajan also stressed on the need for the country to accelerate growth, saying India should not settle for “anything less than double-digit growth” in the medium term.

He also said India was importing “disinflationary conditions” from the rest of the world, helping contain domestic inflation, but said countries needed to be mindful of “an exchange rate that is too strong, which is not competitive.”
