Degree Fake, says AAP; BJP says Degree is genuine; DU Registrar admits minor errors

NEW DELHI (TIP):The ghost of PM Modi’s Bachelor’s degree from Delhi University seems not to die. Amid claims and counter claims on the genuineness of the degree, a lot of players are having a free play.

Delhi University Registrar on May 12 once again reiterated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s degree released by the varsity is genuine and termed the alleged discrepancies as ‘minor errors’. Minor mistakes are common during paperwork.” Tarun Das also disclosed the enrolment number of Narendra Modi as well as his examination number. “Modi’s enrollment number was CC5594/74 and examination roll number was 16594,” said the DU Registrar.

  • Anti-Trump Forces Build Shadow Third-Party Campaign

Anti-Trump Forces Build Shadow Third-Party Campaign

WASHINGTON (TIP): Anti-Donald Trump strategists are working behind the scenes to build the foundation for a third-party run even as the Republican Party takes steps toward unifying around the presumptive GOP candidate, says an ABC report.

A small but dedicated group of Republicans say they’ve begun to cultivate donors in hopes of mounting a viable third-party challenge to a likely Hillary Clinton-Trump showdown that some strategists say has fed broad demand for an alternative option.

“I think we’ll end up in a situation where we do see somebody who’s a conservative alternative to Trump and Mrs. Clinton come November,” Rick Wilson, a veteran Republican operative, said on ABC News’ “Powerhouse Politics” podcast.

While Texas’ state ballot deadline passed this week and others are fast approaching, Wilson downplayed ballot access hurdles, citing legal precedent for rolling back early deadlines. The real challenge, he said, is fielding the appropriate candidate.

“We recognize that finding that person who can pick up the mantle of the third party, who is also electable and compelling and has a great personal narrative, is a difficult lift,” he said. “It’s a lot harder than the ballot access question by an order of magnitude.”

Another Republican at the heart of the effort, Weekly Standard editor and ABC News Contributor Bill Kristol, has tweeted about having discussed the possibility of a third party run with Mitt Romney, Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse, and former Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn. Kristol, Wilson, as well as GOP strategist Joel Searby, are heading up the effort, but it also involves donors and about a dozen other strategists.

Sasse said he is not interested in running, but has bemoaned the two likely candidates and called for a third option in an open letter, writing “WHY is that the only choice?” Similar efforts by this same group to recruit Gen. James Mattis, a retired Marine Corps General, also have not come to pass.

A source close to third party discussions told ABC News that Trump’s position as presumptive nominee explains why the third-party effort has now sprung into force.

“It’s very realistic,” the source said when asked if it was possible to mount this type of effort in May. “We already have a number of serious and capable donors ready to help and while it is very difficult to do this, it is not complicated. It’s a pretty straightforward process. There are a number of signatures needed and a legal process in each state. We are focused on the timeline and while it’s difficult, it’s not a problem that can’t be solved by hard work and resources.”

The same source said they are working on recruiting a candidate: “There are a lot of people who would like to run for president, but only a few that are truly qualified and could mount a bid of this stature this late in the game. We are focused on a very small number of candidates who would fit that profile.”

Matt Kibbe, a former head of the fiscal-conservative group FreedomWorks who led a super PAC supporting Rand Paul in the GOP presidential primary, suggested there’s broad demand for an alternative to a Clinton-Trump matchup.

“I think Libertarians, a lot of [Tea Party members], a lot of constitutional conservatives, and probably less relevantly establishment Republicans, are looking for another option as well,” said Kibbe, who has traditionally voted Republican but plans to attend the GOP, Democratic, and Libertarian conventions in search of a candidate, and is open to likely Libertarian nominee former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson.

Some conservative leaders have cast doubt about the chances of a realistic third-party option as more party members make peace with Trump as their nominee.

Al Cardenas, the former president of the American Conservatives Union and currently a senior partner at the lobbying firm Squire Patton Boggs, said talk of a third option has waned.

“It’s a combination of lacking a superstar willing to do so, and a sense that the party will fare better in general election, down ticket, if it’s not split at top of the ticket,” Cardenas said. Many conservatives are more focused on keeping GOP majorities in Congress, with Trump on the presidential ticket, Cardenas said.

The anti-Trump forces’ uphill climb may have grown steeper today as House Speaker Paul Ryan narrowed the gap between himself and Trump, with the two issuing a joint statement saying their meetings in Washington, D.C., signaled a “positive step” toward unifying the Republican Party.

Other conservative leaders have also warmed to Trump. Despite the GOP nominee’s inconsistencies on whether he supports raising tax rates on the wealthy, Grover Norquist, the top anti-tax activist in Washington, D.C., defended Trump in an interview with CNBC, saying he is “not at all concerned that any taxes are going up at all” with Trump as president.

But anti-Trump activist Wilson said the third-party movement can emerge and beat Clinton.

“A large number of Republicans — 55 percent of the people that have cast their vote in the Republican primary or caucus this year — have done so against Donald Trump,” he said. “Now some of those folks are going to go to him [and] settle for Trump. But that’s because right now they don’t have a conservative alternative before them who can provide them with answers on how you preserve the Republican and conservative movement without it being simply a Hillary operation.”

Raghuram Rajan unfit to be RBI governor, should be removed: Subramanian Swamy

NEW DELHI (TIP): BJP leader Subramanian Swamy on May 12, suggested that Reserve Bank Governor Raghuram Rajan be removed from the post as he was responsible for “unemployment and collapse” of industrial activity. ” In my opinion, RBI Governor is not appropriate for the country. I don’t want to speak much about him. He has hiked interest rates in the garb of controlling inflation that has damaged the country,” he told reporters in Parliament House.

The Governor’s actions have “led to collapse of industry and rise of unemployment in the economy”, he said. “The sooner he is sent back to Chicago, the better it would be.”

    Raghuram Rajan

Rajan is the on-leave Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business. After assuming charge as RBI governor in September 2013, Rajan gradually raised the short-term lending rate from 7.25 per cent to 8 per cent and had retained the high rates throughout 2014.

He kept the rates high, citing inflationary concerns despite intense pressure from the Finance Ministry and the industry for softening them with a view to boosting growth. The Governor began the process of lowering the rates in January 2015 and since then it has come down by 1.50 per cent to 6.50 per cent.

Obama Honours Indian American Teacher Revathi Balakrishnan

HOUSTON, UNITED STATES:  An Indian-American woman elementary teacher from Texas has been honored by US President Barack Obama at the White House for her excellent work in the field of education.

Revathi Balakrishnan, a gifted teacher at Patsy Sommer Elementary School, was also named 2016 ‘Texas Elementary Teacher of the Year’.

“It is not work for me. It is actually a passion,” said 53-year-old Austin-based Ms Balakrishnan who has taught in the district’s talented and gifted programmes for nine years.

Currently teaching math classes in third through fifth grade at Sommer, Ms Balakrishnan, who was honoured last week, will now represent Texas in the ‘National Teacher of the Year’ competition.

“I’m an Indian-American, so I think the Indian community is feeling a lot of pride and joy,” Ms Balakrishnan said, adding that about 30 per cent of the students at ‘Sommer Elementary’ are Asian or Indian.

“I feel proud to represent those and I can convince a lot of younger generation Indian kids to turn to teaching for a career. So I feel I can actually have some impact on that,” she said.

Ms Balakrishnan has taught at ‘Sommer Elementary’ for six years before teaching at Forest North Elementary for three years.

Originally from Chennai, Ms Balakrishnan was a systems analyst with Liberty Mutual, managing databases and programming for about 12 years before becoming a teacher.

Terming her style of teaching as “no nonsense”, Ms Balakrishnan, who earned her economics degree from University of Madras, attributes her success in the field of education to her love of teaching.

She said the excitement of teaching, learning with students and the opportunity to shape students who are the “leaders of tomorrow” drives her.

“Not one day is the same, which is what I like. I don’t like structure. I just go with the flow and I love what happens,” Ms Balakrishnan said.

The ‘National Teacher of the Year Programme’ identifies exceptional teachers in the country, recognises their effective work in the classroom, engages them in a year of professional learning, amplifies their voices and empowers them to participate in policy discussions at the state and national levels.

  • Ami Bera’s Father Admits Illegal Campaign Contributions

Ami Bera’s Father Admits Illegal Campaign Contributions

Indian-American Sacramento-area based Congressman Ami Bera’s 83-year-old father has pleaded guilty to making illegal campaign contributionso his son’s campaigns in 2010 and 2012..

Babulal Bera, who could be jailed for up to 30 months, pleaded guilty in Sacramento before US District Judge Troy Nunley in the Eastern District of California.

The elder Bera pleaded guilty Tuesday to funneling $225,326 to back his son’s political aspirations in 2009 and an additional $43,000 in 2011. In both election cycles, Bera’s parents had already made their own contributions of $2,400 and $2,500, the maximum allowed under the law.

He admitted that in 2010 and 2012, he made the maximum allowable individual contributions to his son’s congressional campaigns in two of California’s districts during these years.

Mr Babulal said that he solicited friends, family members and acquaintances to make contributions, which he then reimbursed with his own funds to make campaign contributions in excess of the contribution limits established by federal law.

The government has identified over 130 improper campaign contributions involving approximately 90 contributors in the two elections. So far, the government has identified over USD 220,000 in reimbursed contributions relating to the 2010 campaign and over USD 40,000 in reimbursed contributions relating to the 2012 campaign.

Ami Bera is the only Indian-American lawmaker in the current Congress and is currently facing a tough re-election campaign against Sacramento Sheriff Scott Jones to keep his seat in the state’s 7th congressional district.

A report in the Los Angeles Times said quoted the lawmaker as saying that he was incredibly saddened and disappointed in learning what his father did. He said that neither he nor any campaign aides were aware of the activities until being contacted by federal prosecutors.

“While I deeply love my father, it’s clear that he has made a grave mistake that will have real consequences for him,” Ami said in the statement.

He said since he first learned about the investigation from authorities, his team and he have cooperated fully with the US Attorney’s Office.

The report also quoted Acting US Attorney Phillip Talbert as saying in a news conference that “Congressman Bera and his campaign staff have been fully cooperative in this investigation” and so far there is no indication “from what we’ve learned in the investigation that either the congressman or his campaign staff knew of, or participated in, the reimbursements of contributions.

Mr Babulal had immigrated to the US from Rajkot, Gujarat in 1958.

A resident of California’s La Palma, Mr Babulal is scheduled to be sentenced by Nunley on August 4.

2,100 Indians Granted Asylum In The US Betweem 2012-14

Over 2,100 Indians have been granted asylum by the Obama administration between 2012 and 2014, as per a report by Homeland Security of the US.

Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh gave details of the Indians provided asylum by the US while quoting from the report in reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.

He said according to latest edition of Annual Flow Report, 425 Indians were given asylum in 2012, 1,042 in the year 2013 and a total of 716 Indian nationals were granted it in 2014. The total comes to 2,183.

“The US government does not share any information with our mission or our Consulates on the number of Indians who have sought or have been granted asylum or the grounds on which the US government has granted them asylum,” Mr Singh said.

To a separate question, he said government has made fitment of navigational and communication equipment mandatory in respect of all fishing vessels of 20 metres and above so that they can be tracked.

  • Indian American Neera Tanden Leads Clinton Campaign In Slamming Trump’s Policies

Indian American Neera Tanden Leads Clinton Campaign In Slamming Trump’s Policies

WASHINGTON:  Indian American Neera Tanden on Wednesday led the Hillary Clinton campaign in slamming the economic policies of Donald Trump, Republican presidential presumptive nominee, and alleging that this poses threat to the economic future of women and families.

“Make no mistake: Trump’s divisive comments about women’s health are a direct threat to our dignity and economic security,” said Ms Tanden, president of the Center for American Progress Action Fund.

“Trump is now trying to cover up the bald spots in his economic plan but women can see for themselves and women can see through his comb over,” said Ms Tanden who was joined by Senator Barbara Mikulski of Maryland.

The two said that the trillions in tax cuts for millionaires, billionaires and corporations laid out in Trump’s tax plan would be an enormous boon for the top one per cent of earners, made at the expense of working families, seniors and the health of the economy.

Trump’s plan would give USD 3 trillion over 10 years or more than 35 per cent of its tax breaks to millionaires, enough money to ensure Medicare and Social Security’s solvency for the next 75 years, repair the ailing infrastructure, or raise every person now living in poverty up to the poverty line.

Trump would give multi-millionaires in the top 0.1 per cent like himself a raise of USD 1.3 million a year, or USD 100,000 a month.

Ms Tanden alleged Trump’s ideas are not the only risk his presidency would pose for the economic future of women and families around this country.

“His tax plan gives USD 3 trillion to millionaires, that’s enough to make Social Security and Medicare solvent for 75 years. Women, who rely disproportionately on Social Security, can’t afford such an irresponsible giveaway,” Ms Tanden said.

Ms Tanden and Mikulski said Trump still opposes raising the minimum wage because he believes “wages are too high” and recently said he doesn’t favor a federal floor for the minimum wage, which could leave many workers subject to a lower minimum wage.

At a time when two-thirds of minimum wage workers are women, this issue is critical to working families, they said. “I’m with Hillary because I know that she’s the only candidate who will make fighting for women and families her priority,” Mikulski said.

  • AgustaWestland Probe: Top Defense Officers under Lens

AgustaWestland Probe: Top Defense Officers under Lens

NEW DELHI (TIP): A day after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) sought “property details” of at least 10 senior officers of the defense ministry and the IAF, the CBI has asked the ministry of defense (MoD) to provide names, addresses and contact details of all senior officers, mostly above joint secretary rank, who served there between 2005, when the tender for 12 choppers was floated, and February 2010, when the contract was awarded to Anglo-Italian firm AgustaWestland for Rs 3,546 crore.

The CBI probe against MoD personnel is significant as the ministry, then under A K Antony, after an “internal examination” had said that “there was no wrongdoing on part of the ministry” and that “all laid procedures were followed as per the defense procurement procedure”.

A senior CBI official said, “We have written to MoD calling for all relevant records related to officers who took part in important meetings, handled important files and signed on them like AM (acquisition manager), JS Air (joint secretary air), DS (defense secretary) among others, who signed on the files and took the decision ultimately to award the contract to AgustaWestland.”

Designations of some senior ministry officials are mentioned against the bribe money allegedly paid by middleman Christian Michel, in a handwritten note which is part of an Italian court judgment. It is alleged that Indian officials, politicians and bureaucrats were paid Rs 360 crore in bribes for the deal.

The CBI is hoping to get a reply from MoD soon as the government has asked probe agencies to go into the root of the scam where bribes were allegedly paid up to the top level.

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) had also slammed the defense ministry and said it modified some crucial parameters of operational requirements of the helicopters in 2005 to favor the Anglo-Italian consortium, which became the sole vendor as a result. The CAG had observed that in January 2006, when acceptance of necessity was granted, the projected cost was Rs 793 crore for 12 helicopters. The cost negotiation committee, however, recommended Rs 3,726.96 crore in February 2009, and a year later, the MoD concluded the contract with AgustaWestland and signed the deal for the same amount.
ED has written to the ministry seeking “property details” of at least 10 senior officers, the abbreviations of whose designations are mentioned in Michel’s note as ‘DCH’, ‘PDSR’, ‘DG Maintt’, ‘FTT’, ‘DS’, ‘JS Air’, ‘AFA Air’, ‘DG Acq’.

The handwritten note, being treated as evidence by the CBI and the ED, mentions that 6 million euros were for AF (air force), 8.4 million euros for BUR (bureaucrats), 3 million euros for AP (alleged to be Ahmed Patel) and 15-16 million euros for the ‘Fam” (believed to be S P Tyagi’s family— cousins Sanjeev, Rajiv and Sandeep Tyagi). No evidence to link politicians with AgustaWestland bribes: Italian judge

On a day that the BJP and Congress traded charges in Parliament regarding the controversial AgustaWestland deal, the Italian judge who delivered the verdict in the VVIP chopper said there was no ‘direct evidence’ linking any Indian politician with alleged kickbacks.

There is a “possibility or probability but there is no direct evidence,” Judge Marco Maria Maiga, who delivered the verdict against Italian middlemen and senior officials of the chopper company, told TV channels, as per reports.

Maiga, a judge of a Milan court, said this when he was asked whether he believed that bribes were offered to Indian politicians by Italian middlemen.

He maintained that his verdict was only against senior officials of the chopper company and middlemen who had paid bribes to some officials in India and that it was up to Indian investigators to follow the money trail.

“Identifying the (Indian) individuals was not in for judgment for Italian courts. Well, we have to clarify that the object of our judgment was on two Italian businessmen and their indictment,” he said, as per PTI.

Modi to address a joint session of the U.S Congress and meet U.S. investors, CEOs in June

NEW DELHI (TIP): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend a dinner hosted by the U.S – India Business Council (USIBC) on June 7 that will bring together around 400 CEOs, investors and business leaders during his two-day visit to the U.S capital.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to address a joint session of the U.S Congress on June 8, and will also attend an event of the Indian community.

USIBC dinner event will honor Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Dilip Shanghvi, founder and managing director of Sun Pharmaceuticals.

Details of the Prime Minister’s address to the joint session of the Congress is still being worked out by Speaker Paul Ryan’s office, and the community event that will also have several U.S lawmakers participating, will be finalized after Mr. Modi’s schedule on the Capitol is final, it has been learnt.

Curiously, India has not formally announced the PM’s visit yet, which is taking place at the behest of President Barack Obama. Details of prime minister’s White House engagement are also not yet final, but it is unlikely that there will be a state banquet, it has been learnt.
The photo-op of the visit could the signing of the first commercial agreement under the Indo-U.S. civil nuclear deal, between the Westinghouse Electric and the Nuclear Power Corporation India Ltd(NPCIL), to build six nuclear reactors in Gujarat.

Westinghouse CEO Daniel Roderick had told Reuters in March that he hoped sign the deal in June, after the negotiations could not conclude by the time of Mr. Modi’s visit to attend the Nuclear Security Summit on March 31 and April 1. A source familiar with the development said the price of electricity is the lingering issue, and it could be resolved before Mr. Modi’s visit.

Donald Trump wins big in Indiana, becomes presumptive GOP nominee

WASHINGTON (TIP): Donald Trump won the Republican primary in Indiana on Tuesday, May 3, a resounding victory that sets him up to be the presumptive Republican nominee.

Rival Ted Cruz announced later in the evening that he was dropping out of the race, removing Trump’s most formidable foe.

Speaking to supporters, Trump said he didn’t know whether Cruz liked him or not but called him “one tough competitor.” Just hours earlier, when Cruz was still in the race, they were trading insults.

“This has been an amazing evening. I didn’t expect this,” Trump said, as he called for party unity.

On the Democratic side, Bernie Sanders was the projected winner in Indiana over Hillary Clinton, a surprise as she had held a slight lead in recent polls.
Trump is now the favorite to win the GOP nomination, a notion unthinkable to many in the GOP establishment a year ago when his potential presidential bid was regarded as a lark or publicity stunt. Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus said in a tweet that Trump was the “presumptive nominee” and that the party should unite behind him.

Cruz could no longer amass a majority of the delegates by the time of the Republican National Convention in July, and Trump’s string of victories raised doubts that he could deny Trump a majority by that point.

“Lyin’ Ted Cruz consistently said that he will, and must, win Indiana,” Trump tweeted shortly after the race was called. “If he doesn’t he should drop out of the race-stop wasting time & money.”

The Hoosier State had once been considered a state favorable to Cruz, and even he had seen it as a firewall to Trump’s wins in the northeast. But an alliance that the Texas senator made with John Kasich unraveled, and Cruz’s announcement that Carly Fiorina would be his running mate hasn’t changed the dynamics of the race.

Clinton has tried to turn her attention to the general election, but Sanders has been bolstered by a hefty fundraising network of small donors. Even though the amount that he raised fell in April, it was still almost $26 million, nearly the same amount that Clinton raised for the primary.

  • Veterans with Job Skills America Needs

Veterans with Job Skills America Needs

Thank you veteransWhen America’s leading companies look to hire top technology talent, their search often follows a well-worn path: Recruiters fan out to world-renowned institutions like MIT, Caltech and Stanford, or they solicit applications from community colleges and other universities with the leading IT and engineering programs. For too long, though, another source of talent has been largely overlooked, despite producing many of America’s most talented technology professionals.

We’re talking about the U.S. military.

On land and in the air, under the sea and out in space, America has the most technologically advanced armed forces in history.

Military researchers and inventors have pioneered technological innovations, including the Internet and GPS, that have transformed modern life. Today, more than 150,000 men and women in the U.S. military are working in tech jobs—like the developers who create the software for fighter jets and the network engineers who protect our country from cyberattacks.

And whether they were establishing wireless networks in Baghdad, repairing communications equipment in the mountains of Afghanistan, or maintaining data-storage units on 100,000-ton aircraft carriers in the South China Sea, these military personnel have often done their jobs in conditions that most people can’t even begin to imagine.

Given this experience, chances are that these men and women can handle whatever comes their way in an office building in Silicon Valley. And when they decide to hang up that uniform and make the transition to civilian life, any company that decides to hire or train them will surely benefit from what they have to offer.

Former Air Force cyber analyst Donny Greene is a perfect example. Last year, after more than two decades in the military, Donny took a job at a company called RBR-Technologies. Since then, he has already completed numerous certifications, represented the company at multiple conferences and worked tirelessly to develop junior analysts. Today, RBR tells us, customers frequently request Donny by name to support their cyber exercises and operations.

Many military spouses, who serve and sacrifice right alongside America’s men and women in uniform, have similar skills and experience. Sandy Brown’s husband is an Army colonel. And even while their family frequently moved from base to base across the country, Sandy continued to excel in her own career. After starting as a software engineer at Raytheon 16 years ago, she is now an area director responsible for $350 million of their business and more than 2,500 employees.

In addition to their hard skills, veterans and military spouses like Donny and Sandy also bring plenty of hard-won life skills: an exacting sense of discipline; a commitment to executing missions perfectly every time; the ability to juggle competing priorities; experience managing diverse teams in high-pressure situations.

It is therefore not surprising that companies across America have realized that hiring veterans and military spouses isn’t just the patriotic thing to do: It’s the smart thing to do for their bottom lines.

That is why, on Thursday, more than 50 American companies and organizations—from small startups to multinational corporations like Amazon, J.P. Morgan Chase, and AT&T—are pledging to hire more than 110,000 veterans and military spouses and to train more than 60,000 of them.

These companies won’t be hiring just for tech jobs, but also for the countless other roles that tech firms need to fill, from logistics and administration to human resources and project management. No matter what job a company has open, chances are that America’s men and women in uniform have been doing that job already in the military and will show up ready to succeed on day one.

The companies making these commitments aren’t alone. Since we launched our Joining Forces initiative in 2011 and started asking Americans to honor and support service members, veterans and their families, leaders in many industries—from private equity and construction to transportation and energy—have answered the call. All told, over the past five years the unemployment rate for veterans has been cut in half, and through Joining Forces companies have hired or trained more than 1.2 million veterans and military spouses.

Despite that remarkable achievement, there is plenty left to be done: 200,000 service members are returning to civilian life every year, and as far as we’re concerned, one unemployed veteran is one too many.

That is why, no matter who takes our husbands’ places next year, we urge them to continue making veteran and military-spouse employment a national priority with leadership from the White House. Giving these men and women an opportunity to find their next mission here at home isn’t just good for American businesses, it is one important way that we as a nation can fulfill our obligation to serve them as well as they have served this country.

  • Trump’s Win will have Consequences

    Trump’s Win will have Consequences

Trump’s opponent, Ted Cruz’s wife had said that her husband’s candidacy was showing America, “the face of God, whom they serve”. But in reality many Americans were reminded of Elmer Gantry, a sleazy 1920s sociopathic preacher from the film Elmer Gantry. Most Americans were not ready for Ted Cruz’s kind of ultra-conservatism. They are worried about jobs. So to paraphrase Bill Clinton, “it is jobs, stupid.”

Trump had declared that his idea was to bring new blood in the party and change its base and outlook. He never spared an opportunity to provoke his rivals, party leadership and media personalities, who inevitably retaliated.

The anti-Trump movement spent more than $75 million on broadcast TV alone. He also weathered nearly 64,000 television advertisements critical of him. Media was also campaigning against him and giving favorable coverage to his opponents. All this has come to a naught. Now Trump is going to be the Republican nominee. He achieved this victory on his own, in spite of opposition from the Republican Party bosses, who are then left with no option but to back him. The leadership did not realize that people are tired of all politicians and do not trust them. Their false promises do not impress anyone. The longer a politician is in office, the more disliked he is. People are fed up with politicians with the same rhetoric and talking points, refusing to accept and learn from the mistakes and make changes and focus on improving the job situation. In 2014, the Republicans secured the largest majority in the House since 1928, and by winning nine seats, regained the Senate majority for the first time in eight years. They also took pride in having control of 31 governorships.

Nevertheless, the so-called establishment could not find any capable aspirant who could be a match for Trump, who had never held any public office. Trump has shown that the party leadership is out of touch.

The recent campaign has brought out the anger of young people, as they are the victims of modernization, international trade deals and shrinking economy with consequent loss of jobs. The income level has gone down, widening the gap between the rich and the ordinary people.

Germany, which had faced the same problem, woke up quite early and made provisions to train the affected workers in new technology. Hence, Germany was equipped to face the problems generated by the international trade agreements.

Neither the Obama administration nor the Republican Congress nor the Senate did anything to address this issue. Therefore, the Republican Party as well as Hillary Clinton are finding it difficult to face the angry youth in their own parties. The Republican leadership as well as Hillary all these years have indulged in pep talk and made tall promises which have failed to revive the economy.

So it is no wonder that while the Republican Party leadership has to eat humble pie, Hillary has also not secured the nomination yet because people do not really like her or trust her. She, of course, would get the required number of delegates in the remaining states, especially in California. But the victory will not be glorious.

Trump says that his ability to make deals and fix problems is the key to his remarkable success in business. But the eventual final campaign would not be easy for either Trump or Hillary. All these days Trump has scrupulously avoided giving details of his economic policy or his international agenda.

His “America First” slogan has roused nationalist fervor but it would result in a protectionist policy. It is true that all international trade agreements have some unpalatable clauses but they also boost trade and economy. It is curious that while multi-billionaire Trump’s “America-First” policy is another name for protectionism; the self-proclaimed socialist, Sanders, also wants to tread the same path. Some economists have pointed out that various welfare schemes put forward by Sanders would have to be backed up by heavy taxation, resulting in the increase in inflation and the cost of living.

So far, democratic white youth nationwide have favored Sanders and brought Hillary’s favorability numbers significantly down. While Trump has won the nomination race, he does not mix with the African-Americans like Hillary does. He has alienated Hispanics and Muslims, which make a very large chunk of population. The language which Trump has used so far, is dangerous. In November, no matter who wins, Hillary or Trump, the problems facing either of them would be enormous and very intricate because of their history and the way in which they have conducted themselves so far.

For instance, it is believed that Hillary is willing to compromise. But some, who know her, say that it is true but at times she is very adamant. When her husband was the President, he put forward a plan for healthcare, which would have been accepted by the Congress with some amendments. But Hillary was adamant, hence the plan failed to pass.

The situation in the country demands a conciliatory tone as well as behavior. Obama generally kept aloof from the members of both parties and also leaders of other countries. Nevertheless, he did follow a conciliatory policy on crucial matters.

Hillary or Trump would have to face a not-so-friendly Congress and the Senate. It is quite possible that Sanders and some other Senators would keep up pressure on the future Clinton administration. It would need a great deal of acumen not to be populist and disturb the balance.

Hillary has been branded as someone, who is close to the financial circles. No President could afford to be an antagonist of these circles; but to keep a balance requires great deal of skill. While Hillary, first as the First Lady, then as the Senator, had relations with members of both houses of Congress., Trump would be totally new to the Congress and the administration. He, of course, has been the head of a big commercial conglomerate. But as the head of the state, he would have to run the administration, be answerable to the Congress as well as people, which is quite different from running a company. Thus, the new President would have to face a volatile situation and many challenges.

Indian-American Kumar Barve Loses Democratic Primary Elections

MARYLAND (TIP): An Indian-American Democratic legislator in Maryland has suffered a humiliating defeat in the party’s primary election for a seat in the US House of Representatives.

Kumar Barve, 57, who was the House Majority Leader from 2003-2014 and now Chairman of Maryland House Environment and Transportation Committee, received just two per cent of the total votes polled in a nine-person Democratic primary race for a seat in the US House of Representatives last night.

The primary election was won by Jamie Raskin who received 33 per cent of the votes.

He was followed by David Trone with 28 per cent of the votes.

In 1990, Mr. Barve made history at the age of 32, when he was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates and became the first Indian-American ever to serve in a state legislator.

If elected, he would have been the fourth Indian-American to be elected to the US House of Representatives. Ami Bera from California is the only Indian-American in the current Congress.
