Singapore PM defends government Internet blockage

SINGAPORE (TIP): SINGAPORE ‘s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has defended the country’s controversial decision to cut off civil servants’ work computers from the Internet, calling the move “absolutely necessary” to keep information systems secure.

“Are we happy? I don’t think so, because it will slow us down in terms of day-to-day productivity. In terms of security, safety of our systems, safety of our citizens and information concerning them, it’s absolutely necessary,” he told Singapore media during a visit to Myanmar.

Lee said that the defence and foreign affairs ministries already have separate computers for Internet access and for handling sensitive communications.

There was a huge backlash on Wednesday when The Straits Times newspaper reported that some 100,000 government computers would be affected by the Internet blockage, aimed at keeping data secure and preventing the spread of malware .

It quoted a cyber security official as saying that there were 16 attacks on government systems from unnamed sources in the last year, but the malware was detected and destroyed.

Malware is software specifically designed to disrupt or damage a computer system.

Civil servants would still be able to access the Internet on their personal devices such as tablets and mobile phones.

Public school teachers and lecturers would not be affected by the move, officials said.

Singapore is one of the world’s most Internet-savvy societies, offering broadband speeds envied by many.

A wide range of government services are available online, including registering for marriage, filing complaints to the police and video consultations with doctors.

Singapore announced in 2014 it was stepping up IT security measures following attacks on a section of the prime minister’s website, as well the website of the presidential residence.

Pavithra presents Yoga of dance at Princeton University

PRINCETON, NJ (TIP): Renowned Bharatanatyam dancer Pavithra Srinivasan of Chennai mesmerized the audience at the Whig Hall of Princeton University during a lecture and dance presentation on the Yoga of Dance last week.

Pavithra SrinivasanAcclaimed dancer and educator Pavithra Srinivasan explored the intersections and suggested India’s venerable classical dance tradition as a vehicle to connect to deeper truths and spiritual awareness. She drew on decades of rigorous dance training, deep study of sacred texts, and personal guidance from her guru–the renowned Param Pujya Swami Dayananda Saraswati

She enacted stories from the Pancha Tantra, Ramayana, and Bhaja Govindam, a popular 8th century devotional composition in Sanskrit attributed to Sri Adi Sankaracharya, a great seer of Advaita philosophy of India. The program was sponsored by the Princeton University Hindu Life Program and The Yoga Council.

Pavithra began by explaining Yoga and demonstrated the Surya Namaskar chanting “Om Mitraya Namaha”, “Om Ravaye Namaha”. She told the audience Surya Namaskar not only includes asanas and pranayama, but also includes mantra and meditation techniques, expressing gratitude to the Sun as a life and light giving source to all forms in the planet. For dancers, it is also an exercise for stretching, strengthening of muscles, massaging of joints and internal organs of the body, she said.

Both yoga and the classical dances of India are a gift to the world. Both disciplines, yoga with its admirable precision and alignment and dance with its graceful hand gestures coordinated movements and meaningful facial expressions, have been blended for centuries

She explained to students that Vedic culture, that includes customs, food, dress, language, literature, scriptures, music, dance … anything that gives examples of great heroes who lived a life of profound truths and courageous deeds that help the human mind and life to grow, mature and evolve. This helps in discovering the true purpose of life, to unite and to help others unite themselves with their highest nature, so all can live in a life of harmony and freedom from misery. In this exploration, both yoga and dance point the way.

Pavithra, adorned with jewels and clad in a radiant green saree, looked beautiful and her dance with excellent storytelling captivated the audience. Pavithra concluded with a scene from the immortal hymn Bhaja Govindam written by Saint Sankara in which he urges man to turn towards the Self and sing His glory instead of being distracted, deluded and destroyed by mundane matters.

Yoga of dance is thus the union of the physical, psychological and spiritual plane to transcend the ordinary and to be established in one’s own true nature in one’s own self, which is the ultimate freedom from all unhappiness, she narrated.

Indian-American Author Akhil Sharma Bags Top Irish Award

NEW YORK (TIP): Indian-American author Akhil Sharma has won the prestigious 100,000-euro International Dublin Literary Award, the world’s richest award for a single novel, for his second novel ‘Family Life’.

The Delhi-born New Yorker has already bagged the 2015 Folio Prize worth 40,000 pounds for his autobiographical novel that tells the tale of how a family moves from Delhi to New York, where the older brother has an accident that leaves him brain-damaged and in need of 24-hour care. “I got the email telling me I had won, my first thought was ‘thank God, another disappointment avoided’. It hurts when you don’t get something, so I was just relieved to not have pain,” the 44-year-old author told ‘The Guardian’ in Dublin.

CkhmtY9WYAERNT6.jpg-large“I don’t believe that a prize means it’s the best book. All a prize means is that it is the book which has won a prize, that it’s the one judges agreed on. But it’s a great honor, it’s a prize I have known about for decades, and I admire the books which have won,” he said. Mr. Sharma was named the winner from an initial list of 160 nominations by a panel of judges including novelists Ian Sansom, Juan Pablo Villalobos and Carlo Gacbler.

‘Family Life’ took the author nearly 13 years to write and now he plans to use some of the money from the award to set up a scholarship in his brother’s name, one of the key characters in the book. The Irish prize is unusual in that contenders, which must be published in English or English translation, are nominated by public libraries from around the world, Mr. Sharma’s work was put forward by the India International Centre library in New Delhi and by Jacksonville public library in the US. The author is now working on a collection of short stories and hopes to complete it by the end of the year.

President Obama endorses Raja Krishnamoorthi in Congressional bid

CHICAGO (TIP): Raja Krishnamoorthi’s bid for US Congress contesting from the 8th Congressional District of Illinois got one of the biggest boosts with the US President Barack Obama endorsing his candidacy.

Raja, a Democratic nominee, is in this year’s open-seat race in the constituency which includes west and northwest Chicago suburbs. He has already elicited support from a number of Federal, State and local level leasers besides massive support from Indians, Pakistanis and Bangaldeshi voters in the area.

If elected, he will become the 2nd India-born Congressman after Dalip Singh Saund, D-California, who served in the House of Representatives 1957-1963. Two other Indian-Americans in Congress include former Representative and later Governor of Louisiana Bobby Jindal, who was born in Louisiana, and current incumbent Rep. Ami Bera, D-California, who is running for re-election. “I’m elated to have the President’s support,” Krishnamoorthi told the media. “He’s put working families front and center as President and that is what I intend to do if elected.” “As the son of immigrants who worked their way into the middle-class, Raja understands both the challenges facing America’s working families and the opportunities their work makes possible,” President Obama said. “I know he’ll fight hard in Congress to create more good jobs, empower more Americans to start businesses, and help working families afford to put their children through college.”

Raja served Obama as issues director in the President’s successful U.S. Senate campaign in 2004 when Raja helped shape policy proposals that Obama embarked on in federal office.

“I am honored and humbled to have the support of President Obama in my race for Congress,” Raja said of the endorsement. “It only seems like yesterday that the two of us ate dinner in my childhood home in Peoria before the beginning of his historic rise to the US Senate and the White House. A few gray hairs later, that dinner table conversation continues as we are focused on standing up for the middle class and working to make sure that we come together as a country instead of casting stones and insults at our fellow Americans.”

Raja grew up in Peoria, Illinois where he graduated as a valedictorian of Richwoods High School. After college and law school, he served as a founding prosecutor in Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s anti-corruption unit and as Deputy Treasurer of Illinois.

A lifelong progressive, Raja is running for Congress to stand up for middle class families and fight against attempts by House Republicans to cut Social Security and Medicare that are benefits his parents and millions of other Americans rely on.

Raja Krishnamoorthi currently serves as president of Sivananthan Labs and Episolar, Inc., small businesses that sell products in the national security and renewable energy industries. He is a co-founder of InSPIRE, a non-profit organization that provides training to Illinois students and veterans in solar technology.

  • FIVE ASPECTS OF SHIVA | #Hinduism #Shaivism

    FIVE ASPECTS OF SHIVA | #Hinduism #Shaivism

Normally Lord Shiva is worshipped as Shiva Linga. Shivalingas with five faces are also found in some places. The Names of the five faces are:

Sadyojat, Vamdev, Aghoraa, Tatpurush and Îshana

These four faces of Shiva represent the four directions. The fifth face which points skywards is the universal face symbolic of purity and spiritual progress.

This rare prayer in each stanza addresses each one of these five faces of Shiva, the 4 Vedas and Om.

Comparable to the Vyuhas or emanations of Lord Visnu, is the Pancanana form of Lord Siva. Pancanana or the five-faced one represents the five aspects of Shiva vis-a-vis the created universe. The five faces are respectively Hana, Tatpurusa, Aghora, Vamadeva and Sadyojata. The face Hana turned towards the zenith, represents the highest aspect and is also called Sadasiva. On the physical plane, it represents the power that rules over ether or sky and on the spiritual plane, it is the deity that grants Moksa or liberation. Tatpurusa facing east, stands for the power that rules over air and represents the forces of darkness and obscuration on the spiritual plane. Aghora, facing south and ruling over the element fire, stands for the power that absorbs and renovates the universe. Vamadeva facing north, ruling over the element water, is responsible for preservation. Sadyojata, facing west represents the power that creates.

Iconographically, all the five aspects are shown in different ways.

There are several other aspects in which Lord Siva is depicted or worshipped. These can be broadly divided into the following categories: (1) Saumya or Anugraha Murti; (2) Ugra, Raudra or Samhara Murtis; (3) Nrtta or Tandava Murti;(4) Daksinamurti; (5) Lingodbhavamurti; (6) Bhiksatanamurti; (7) Haryardhamurti; (8) Ardhanarisvaramurti.

Peaceful form of Siva as also the form showing mercy and grace belong to the first group. The forms showing grace or granting boons to Candesa, Nandisvara, Vighnesvara or Ravana belong to this category.

All terrific aspects can be classed under the second group. Kankala Bhairava represents Siva who cut off the fifth head of Brahma for having reviled him and who had to wander as a beggar for twelve years to get rid of that sin. Gajasuravadhamurti represents him as killing the demon Nila (an associate of Andhakasura) who had assumed the form of an elephant. Tripurantaka-murti depicts him as destroying by his arrow, the three cities of iron, silver and gold built on the earth, in air and in heaven by the three sons of Andhakasura who had become almost invincible because of these three impregnable shelters. Sarabhesamurti pictures Siva as a Sarabha (an imaginary animal more ferocious than the lion) destroying the Narasirhha form of Visnu, a story obviously conceived by the Saivites to assert the superiority of their Lord over Visnu! Kalari-murti portrays him as vanquishing Yama, the god of death, who wanted to take away the life of Markandeya, a great devotee of Siva. Kamantakamurti illustrates him as destroying Kama, the god of lust, by the fire emitted through his third eye. Andhakasura-vadha-murti shows him as vanquishing Andhakasura and later on, on supplication, conferring on him the commandership of the Gal)as (dwarf attendants). Andhaka became Bhrngisa.

Lord Siva is a great master of dance. All the 108 modes of dancing known to the treatises on dancing have come from him. It is said that he dances every evening in order to relieve the sufferings of creatures and entertain the gods who gather in Kailasa in full strength. (Hence he is called Sabhapati, the lord of the congregation.)

Only nine modes of dancing are described of which the Nataraja aspect is the most well-known. The Nataraja icon shows him with four hands and two legs, in the posture of dancing. There is the Damaru (drum) in the upper right hand and fire in the left. The lower right hand is in Abhayamudra (pose of protection) and the left is pointing towards the uplifted left foot. The left foot is resting on the demon Apasmarapurusa. The whole image mayor may not be surrounded by a circle of blazing fire.

Siva’s dance indicates a continuous process of creation, preservation and destruction. The Damaru represents the principle of Sabda (sound) and hence Akasa (ether), which proceeds immediately from the Atman and is responsible for further creation or evolution. Fire represents Pralayagni, the fire that destroys the world at the time of dissolution of the world, and hence symbolises the process of destruction. Thus damaru and fire represent the continuous cycle of creation, preservation and destruction. The other two hands indicate that he who takes refuge at the feet of the Lord will have nothing to fear. The Apasmara-purusa (Apasmara=epilepsy) symbolises ignorance which makes us lose our balance and consciousness. He is trampled upon by the Lord for the good of the devotees who take refuge.

  • Feminine Divinity, Symbolism of Shakti and Women’s Empowerment in Contemporary India

Feminine Divinity, Symbolism of Shakti and Women’s Empowerment in Contemporary India

Since 1947, India has been somewhat isolated globally because it stands alone and is not part of any of the usual groups or clubs. India is not a white or western country, it is not an Islamic country, it is not an Arabic country, it is not a communist country and it is certainly not a military dictatorship. It was part of non-aligned movement which did not have any natural commonality in its members. India still remains isolated because it stands alone on many international fora owing to India’s unique ancient history. India was described as a “functioning anarchy” by a former US ambassador to India John Kenneth Galbraith. Break-up or disintegration of India has been ritually predicted and invoked by so many western analysts and thinkers. Numerous international conspiracies have been hatched since 1947 to materialize support for further partition of India. Some have even refused to accept the nation-hood or statehood of India in a geo-political sense. Others have erroneously credited the British colonial empire for bestowing the sense of nationhood on India as a unique colonial contribution.

As India changes its direction and gathers some self-confidence, there has been resurgence of talk in the mainstream media and academia for the last two years about the threats facing the so-called “Idea of India”. The terms like “Idea of India” and “Intolerance” have been utilized as code-words or proxy to pillory Hindu traditions and Indian Renaissance. There seems to be an obvious nexus between Indian mainstream media and the western mainstream media in an exercise in bashing India, Indian tradition and Indian growth trajectory. Isolated incidents have been magnified. Indeed, the naysayers and the “Nattering Nabobs of Negativism” have predicted impending doom for India. Heinous crimes against women, though very unfortunate, have been given so much prominence in the media as if they were normative occurrence in India without taking into consideration the positive aspects of Indian society and Indian traditions. The movie “India’s Daughter” by Leslee Udwin was a prime example of this India bashing exercise. The western protagonists and their Indian acolytes, owing to an inherent Hindu-phobic and anti-India bias, have failed to take into consideration the frequency of such crimes in US or UK or elsewhere in the world presenting a very sensational and distorted picture of India. Powerful international and local forces are at work to portray our Hindu tradition as sexist, anti-women, misogynist and anti-feminist. India’s leftists, liberals, card-carrying communists, caste-ists, Islamists and feminists have built up a de facto “alliance of convenience” and a political “coalition of the willing” in conjunction with the western NGOs that funnel monies to these local groups. There is a method to this madness. Alliance of Indian feminists, nay, Femi-nazis with their western sponsors poses a real national security threat to the fabric of the Indian nation. Women are the real fabric of the nation. A nation can be defeated only if its women are subjugated by fraud, deception or brute force. While pillorying Indian (read Hindu) society as patriarchal, misogynist and anti-women, these groups fail to appreciate the plurality and the extreme diversity of Indian traditions with still prevalent matriarchal subcultures in the contemporary Indian society, e.g.; the Nairs in Kerala, some sections in Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh and the Khasis in Meghalaya. People in Kinnaur, HP follow a matriarchal system; they also practice polyandry following the historical example of the Pandavas from Mahabharata times.

Ancient India and Concept of Devi, the Divine Femininity:

In this article we will recapitulate the venerable place, honor and respect given to women in the ancient Hindu tradition. We will also review the historical vicissitudes of the status of women in ancient, medieval, colonial eras and in modern India. We also delineate and emphasize those foreign factors that adversely influenced the status of women in the Indian society and subjugated them in the colonial era that lasted approximately one thousand years. We also discuss the very uniquely Hindu concepts of Devi (female divinity), Shakti and the veneration of Shakti as the ultimate mother and its symbolic use in women’s empowerment in the contemporary Indian society. Female divinity is unique to Hinduism. The word Devi in Sanskrit means the illuminated or the illustrious one. Like the holy trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh or Shiva, there is divine female trinity of Saraswati, Lakshmi and Uma, all three equally holy, divine and worthy of worship in their own right. Woman always comes first in various Hindu traditions, be they Vaishnava, Shaiva, Tantra, Vama-marga, Vedanta etc. That is why we have expressions like Sita-Ram, Radhey-Shyam and Gauri-Shankar. It is never Ram-Sita, Shyam-Radha, Narayan-Laxami or Shankar-Gauri. Shakti comes first, and Shiva comes afterwards. Hindu Males always follow, venerate and vow to protect the females, as the divine mother who gives birth, as loving daughter to be given away as kanyadanam during marriage (the ultimate danam a Hindu male can do for the perpetuation of human race), as sister to be protected or as wives to be cherished as ardhangini. The concept of mother-goddess is so deeply enshrined in Hinduism that per Bhagwat Purana there are seven mothers: the one who gives birth (biological mother), wife of your teacher (gurupatni), wife of priest (brahmani), queen (rajpatni), cow (dhenu or gaumata), one who raises you (foster-mother or dhatri) and earth (Prithavi). There is a saying: mata prithavi, putroham prithivyam!

All Hindu rituals are conducted primarily by women, men have to sit quietly and follow the women. Woman is the leader; man is the follower and the participant. A Hindu man is incomplete without his wife during religious rituals and yajanas just as even Rama was incomplete without Sita during the ashwamedha yajana!  He had to have a statue of Sita sit by his left side while performing the yajana. During the festival of Navaratras, the Devi, the feminine divinity, the Goddess is worshipped in her nine different forms! These nine different forms are Durga, the invincible mother, Bhadrakali, the mother of fortune and wealth, Amba, the universal mother, Annapoorna that feeds the world by providing Anna, Sarvamangala that brings peace and joy to the world, Bhairavi, the divine mother that brings good to good people & evil to bad people, Chandika, the fierce one, Saraswati, the goddess of learning & beauty, Bhavani, the Goddess of mercy, and Mookambika, the Goddess of Shiva and Shakti. The symbolism that woman comes first and the man just follows her becomes apparent when one watches the contemporary Hindi TV serials be it Kum Kum Bhagya, Pavitra Rishta, Suhasini or Woh Rahane Waali Mahlon ki! The female lead character always epitomizes the Hindu woman as Shakti, as a warrior princess or Durga who fights for her rights, defeats the evil and always protects the good but in that arduous, long-drawn journey, she also sacrifices her personal needs while nurturing others in her family!

Let us make no mistake. There are enormous cross-cultural differences in the gender roles and gender behaviors in Indian society versus western societies. However, in Hindu context the women have traditionally exercised tremendous political power through their fertility, i.e. progeny unlike the West where women exercise their power and autonomy using their sexuality and art of seduction. Indian society has historically emphasized dignity and honor of women instead of a pseudo-equality and gender role substitutability. The concept of the divine mother as the originator of the srishti is so unique to Hinduism only. Invoking divine qualities in the mother Goddess gives a unique and special status to Hindu women who have attained motherhood and in no way diminishes them for exercising their fertility unlike so in Western societies. In fact, the suffix or the title Sreemati in Sanskrit literally means the lady who possesses wealth and prosperity!

A famous quote from Manu Smriti, that has been demonized by the leftist cabal as anti-women, states:

    यत्र नार्यस्तु पूज्यन्ते रमन्ते तत्र देवता: ।

    यत्रैतास्तु न पूज्यन्ते सर्वास्तत्राफला: क्रिया: ।।

Yatra Naryastu Pujyante Ramante Tatra Devata

    Yatraitaastu Na Pujyante Sarvaastatrafalaah Kriyaah

Meaning: “Where Women Are Honored, Divinity Blossoms There; And Where They Are Dishonored, All Action Remains Unfruitful.”

That is the essence of and epitome of the exalted status given to women in ancient Indian culture and Hindu tradition.

Concept of Shakti in Hindu Tradition:

Shaktism is the worship of the Supreme being as the Divine mother in the form of Shakti or Devi. Etymologically, the word Shakti in Sanskrit is derived from the “shak” dhatu or root which literally means “CAN DO”! Shakti literally means one who “CAN DO”! Shakti is the eternal supreme power. Shaktiman is the one who has Shakti, who is endowed with Shakti, i.e. energy! Shakti is the one who can accomplish victory over evil by the virtue of her creative energy force. In Hindu traditions, woman is the vessel of Shakti. The identification with Shakti stipulates woman as a fountainhead of both creative and destructive power. Each Hindu God has his Shakti, Brahma has Saraswati, Vishnu has Lakshmi and Shiva has Gauri or Parvati. Each is incomplete without his Shakti. Unlike Hinduism, in Christianity the myth has been created that Jesus was celibate and his historically acknowledged wife Mary Magdalene was a fallen woman. A prostitute who had merely become his disciple! In Islam, the woman has just one-fourth the value of a man in testamentary capacity! Shakti, the supreme energy force, is the personification of God in all the Indic traditions including Hinduism, Sikhism, Jainism and Buddhism. The Tibetan New Year Losar is essentially a celebration of Shakti. Even the 10th Sikh Guru, Govind Singh worshipped goddess Durga and named his fighting sword Chandi as a symbolism of Shakti.

There are four Adi Shaktipeethas in Shakti tradition. Fifty-one Shaktipeethas are located all over the entire Indian subcontinent. In ancient Indian history and literature (carried through oral traditions), there are honorable mentions of women as Shakti, a divine feminine energy force or Urja. Examples are Mahishasur Mardini or Kali, Chandi, Durga a warrior goddess. There are other examples of women warriors in ancient Indian history. Kekayi, the youngest wife of King Dashratha obtained those infamous three boons from him by saving his life in the battlefield. Naturally, the question arises as to what Kekayi was doing in the battlefield except for combat!

In tantric tradition, the woman is considered of higher status than the man. Tantra stipulates that mortal women are “life-itself” and Goddess-like because they embody the principle of Shakti. The institution of Bhairavi in Tantra and Vamamarga tradition does not suggest exploitation or anti-women attitude of Indian society. Bhairavi in Tantra tradition epitomizes the powerful feminine achievement by embarking a journey of supreme spirituality, sublime sensuality and symbiotic sexuality with her Bhairava who just follows her and is by her side, every step of the way, in her raising the kundalini energy! And yes, Bhairavi is not ashamed of her symbiotic sexuality because it is the ultimate life-force and she is the protagonist, she is the leader (and not the cheer-leader), she is initiator! Bhairavi, in that particular tradition, is neither repressed nor oppressed nor exploited!

PM Modi in USA: Symphony, Inseparable Partnership

“India played a key role in 1773 Boston Tea Party and lost 5000 men, women and children to Lord Cornwallis upon his arrival in India after losing to George Washington. Today (June 7), destiny was bilaterally recognized: Indian PM Modi speaking of an Inseparable Partnership, and Ranker Eliot Engel, with Joe Crowley introducing The Special Global Partnership with India Act of 2016 (H.R.5387) – which would designate India as a Special Global Partner of the United States – to enhance global peace and security. A symphony orchestra capable to making global peace stick.

As an American of proud Indian heritage, to see an Indian PM – be it Rajiv Gandhi in 1985 or Narendra Modi in 2016 – in the Congress is a joy only enhanced by the music to every ear: that United States and India are not only natural allies, but Inseparable Partners – the very definition of Destiny. Finally, all the constructive nudging for decades has paid off.

Eliot Engel and Ed Royce are mature hands that embraced destiny by enhancing US-India ties to inseparability.

Today, 1.25 billion Indians saluted the United States, and the American People, through their representatives, saluted them back. Destiny achieved is a thing of beauty that every heart and every nation can both enjoy and use to recalibrate.”

Sri Chinmoy, who led the twice-weekly peace meditation at the United Nations for 37 years, told the world’s most beloved athlete Ali, “You are changing the face and fate of mankind. Your very name encourages and inspires. As soon as people hear ‘Muhammad Ali,’ they are inspired. They get tremendous joy. They get such dynamism to be brave and face ignorance…Your heart of oneness with all humanity makes you the greatest.”

Ali replied to Sri Chinmoy, “My goal is to be like you one day—to be peaceful and out of this sport working for humanity and for God…I want to do something to bring people together, to work for God and to help people.”

This week members of the Sri Chinmoy Centers worldwide and friends are paying tribute to the memory of Muhammad Ali by performing three songs composed by their teacher about the immortal boxer. The songs were first performed during meetings of Sri Chinmoy with Muhammad Ali and are entitled Greater than the Greatest, Muhammad Ali – Champion Ali, and Indomitable Hero Supreme. They speak of the physical and spiritual greatness of one of the most universally loved figures of our age.

Many years later, on June 12th, 2003, Sri Chinmoy met again with Muhammad Ali and also his wife, Lonnie, at The Oneness-Family School in Washington, DC. There Sri Chinmoy honored both husband and wife by lifting them together overhead in his signature Lifting Up the World with a Oneness-Heart program. The spiritual luminary said to the beloved boxer, Brother, you were the greatest. You are the greatest. You forever will remain the greatest!”

Delighted by the honor, Muhammad Ali embraced Sri Chinmoy and sweetly exclaimed, “Brother, you are a great man! Brother, you are a very strong man!”

    Bracing for a #Trump Presidency

In 2008, the two presidential gladiators forced the Americans to think about what the United States was all about; the Obama victory only aggravated the American society and its political divisions. The 2016 contest, too, will invite the Americans to reaffirm certain basic principles and commitments which for more than 200 years have sustained the American experiment — and, for which the world has admired and respected the United States……In the 2016 presidential contest, the world will see America’s rather un-pretty face. The reason is simple. Donald Trump has forced his way to the very top of the Republican presidential pile entirely on his own terms.  And, these terms were cheap, shoddy, vicious and racist”, says the author.

Two days ago, the American presidential line-up got firmed up. Hillary Clinton clinched the Democratic Party’s nomination and will take on Donald Trump of the Republican Party. Just as in 2008 the Americans found themselves having to choose between two very different, almost starkly opposite candidates —Barack Obama, a black man, and John McCain, a Vietnam war veteran and very much a white man — they will now be called upon to decide between a woman with a record of steady legislative and administrative service and a maverick billionaire, who has not held any public office. The presidency is the first public job Donald Trump is applying for.

In 2008, the two presidential gladiators forced the Americans to think about what the United States was all about; the Obama victory only aggravated the American society and its political divisions. The 2016 contest, too, will invite the Americans to reaffirm certain basic principles and commitments which for more than 200 years have sustained the American experiment — and, for which the world has admired and respected the United States.

And, as the United States remains the world’s largest economy and also the world’s strongest power, the American presidential choices are a matter of interest — and, concern — to the rest of the world. The American presidency is a powerful office. And, just as he does at home, the President of the United States also makes more than a difference in the world. The American presidential contest may be a matter to be sorted out by the Americans themselves, but the world will have to live with the consequences of their choice. Arguably, that proposition has been valid since the end of the Second World War, but today America is a different place. As a nation, the Americans are definitely in an angry mood. They feel frustrated and cheated. The American political system seems to offer no corrective solutions to the excesses of capitalism and the consequent economic inequalities. Jarringly enough, these inequalities are only getting entrenched. The “mainstream” leadership, both of the Democratic and Republican varieties, is hopelessly beholden to the “Wall Street”, and, offers no intellectual solutions or even political slogans to address the Americans’ economic grievances.

America is also in an ugly mood. Much of this ugliness can be traced to the relentless rise of the religious right. The Republican Party is virtually a religious party. It is in thrall to what Kevin Phillips calls the “Armageddon hucksters.” Post ‘9/11’, the Christian right feels righteously confirmed in its prejudices and bigotry by the rise of Islamic groups and their demonstrated ability to wield violence. Some kind of religious madness has seeped into the American soul. The religious right has so deeply polarized the American domestic political theatre and its actors that the United States is no longer able to project a comforting and comfortable liberal visage to the rest of the world.

And, what is worse, America is in a mood to blame the rest of the world for its manifest decline. Every conservative ideologue easily subscribes to the totemic chant, “our country is in decline.” And, that is where the new Republican presidential standard-bearer steps in to tap the Americans’ fears about a world Washington no longer seems able to control. And, most fearful among the Americans is the white middle class, which feels squeezed in not just economically but also culturally and politically.

It is an America that has come to resent — and resent deeply, unapologetically and righteously — its own President, not just because he is a black but because he is cerebral, has the benefit of a Harvard education, and is not given to shabby populism, and professes to be a reasonable man. This resentfulness has been incessantly fed and nurtured by the American religious right; and, the liberal voices and opinion-makers have had no answer to this creeping fashionable bigotry. And, this closing of the American mind would invite unpredictable responses from forces outside.

In the 2016 presidential contest, the world will see America’s rather un-pretty face. The reason is simple. Donald Trump has forced his way to the very top of the Republican presidential pile entirely on his own terms. And, these terms were cheap, shoddy, vicious and racist. He did not care for the so-called “Republican establishment” and its gentrified protocols. He made no secret that he gave a damn about the liberals’ notions of “political correctness”, and he deliberately, provocatively massaged the white Americans’ dormant racial fears of the “outsider”. Above all, he is openly contemptuous of the global institutional arrangements and their obligations on the United States. Trump has sent every establishment economist in a tizzy with his aggressive advocacy of “economic nationalism”. But he has stayed with his message of protectionism and unilateralism. And, that is where the world will watch with considerable trepidation how the Americans sort the two candidates out during the campaign. Admittedly, between now and the first week of November, both Clinton and Trump would have ample opportunities to finesse their presidential personas. The prolonged ritual of campaigning carries with itself opportunities and pitfalls. Hillary Clinton is a familiar face and a tested name. She promises to stay firmly in the center of political reasonableness and public policy choices. But this is the first time the Americans would be called upon to decide whether they want a woman as their commander-in-chief. These last eight years of a black President have, paradoxically, made America a mixed-up, pixilated society, troubled by overt political correctness and plainly uncomfortable with liberal notions. For all her proven record of public service, Clinton is unpalatable to very many Americans. Just as Senator Bernie Sanders was able to instigate doubts among the Democrats about her baggage, Trump can be expected to be vicious and unrelenting in rattling skeletons in the Clinton cupboard. She will definitely need to reinforce the Americans’ trust in her competence and probity. A Clinton meltdown cannot be entirely ruled out.

And, the same will hold equally true for Trump. Untempered as he has been with any public responsibility, Trump’s persona is cast in stone. Whereas Clinton promises to carry out more of the Obamaesque steadfastness, Trump will cater to the American impulse to punch difficult customers in the face. Above all, the Trump political insurgency has already emboldened all those leaders and groups around the world who believe in politics of national resentments, identity antagonism, demagoguery, and — personality cult. A right-wing fever is already claiming new victims in Europe. A Trump presidency would simply subvert the established world order and its accepted value system. The collective wisdom of the American people may be too feeble to stop that dangerous man. Considerable turmoil is in store for the global community.

  • New York gears up for second International Day of Yoga celebrations

New York gears up for second International Day of Yoga celebrations

NEW YORK CITY (TIP): After the overwhelming success of last year’s maiden International Day of #Yoga celebration, New York City is all set to make it larger in the second year. Instead of a single day celebration, as it happened in 2015 on June 21, this time it’s going to be a 19 daylong event from June 10 to 28 in and around New York. But 2016 Yoga day will be a little less glamorous as it’s not going to be attended by any celebrity.

While addressing the 69th session of UNGA in September, 2014, Prime Minister @NarendraModi urged the world community to adopt an International Day of Yoga. On December 11, 2014, the 193 member UNGA approved the proposal by consensus to declare 21 June as “International Day of Yoga.” In its maiden year IDY became hugely popular around the globe.

Like last year the Consulate General of India, New York in association with local Indian community and associations, would be organizing a series of Yoga related events in and around New York from 10th – 28th June 2016.

The Consulate General of India in New York on June 8 hosted a gathering to review the preparations for upcoming second International Day of Yoga in New York City.
Consul General Ms Riva Ganguly Das and Deputy Consul General Dr Manoj Kumar Mohapatra chaired the meeting. Members of the media and leaders of local cultural institutions attended the conference.

Other speakers who addressed the gathering included Mr. Mahesh from Mallakhamb Federation USA, Ruchika Lal from The Art of Living Foundation, Jagdish Sewhani from HSS, Chaitanya Sonar from Sahaja Yoga, Sanjay Attara from Hindu Temple Society of North America, Guru Dilipji from World Yoga Community and Malini Shah representing Queens Museum.

Consul General Riva Ganguly Das informed that in the city of New York and adjoining cities, several high profile events are being organized to celebrate IDY. “We are getting overwhelming support from the community. We want to thank you all”, she said.

Deputy Consul General Dr Manoj Kumar Mohapatra gave the details of the events. The Consulate is partnering with more than 25 organizations/ associations to arrange these events. Their main partners for the events are Queens Museum, Mallakhamb Federation USA, The Art of Living Foundation, Hindu Swam Sevak (HSS), Federation of Indian Association (FIA) – Ohio, Indian Cultural Association of North America, Sahaja Yoga, The Hindu Temple of North America, World Yoga Community Inc., New England International Day of Yoga, Times Square, Indian American Association of Westchester, EWR International Airport, JFK International Airport, South Asian Art Council and Sahaja Yoga – Pennsylvania Chapter.

Dr Mohapatra said that MIT is hosting Yoga sessions for its students. The Massachusetts police also take part in Yoga sessions.

The Curtain Raiser will be held on June 11 at Queens Museum, New York City Building, Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Summer Solstice at Times Square will be held on June 20 from 7 am to 8:30 pm. The Consulate have also organized yoga lecture-cum-demonstration at the JFK and Newark airport. Passengers can practice yoga while waiting in transit. “This year there will be 30 minutes Yoga demonstrations in the airports so that incoming and outgoing passengers can easily participate”, informed Dr Mohapatra.

But unlike last year no delegation from India is coming this year for the celebration. Last year the delegation led by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj represented the Government of India at Times Square and the Hindu Temple Society of North America, Flushing. Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, who introduced a Resolution in the Senate in support of the IDY, Madhur Bhandarkar, Film Director, also participated and cheered up the participants at the Times Square where close to 20,000 people participated throughout the day.

  • Discussion on the “International Law on Peace and Justice” at the UN Headquarters

Discussion on the “International Law on Peace and Justice” at the UN Headquarters

NEW YORK, NY (TIP): On Thursday May 26th, Ambassadors of Denmark, Haiti, Romania and South Africa and representatives from 15 other Permanent Missions gathered at the United Nations Headquarters to discuss the issues of “International Law on Peace and Justice.” Hosted by Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL), an international peace organization, the session drew much attention as it was held in line with the global peace walks held across 52 nations with 300,000 people, celebrating the 3rd Annual Commemoration of the Declaration of World Peace.

The ambassadors in attendance shared effective national practices to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on quality education, gender equality, reduced inequalities, peace and justice. On the other hand, HWPL introduced the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) as an effective means of achieving the UN SDGs.

The Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War was drafted by the HWPL International Law Peace Committee that consists of renowned experts in the field of international law. On March 14th this year, it was then presented to the public with the aim of maintaining international peace and security, leaving an invaluable inheritance of a world free of wars to successive generations.

The Declaration respects and builds on the principles of the Charter of the United Nations as well as other international instruments such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Mr. Man Hee Lee, the Chairman of HWPL, provided guidance in drafting the Declaration. In his commemorative address at the peace walk in Seoul, South Korea, he said “the eyes of the world are focused on us here today … What we must leave as a legacy for our future generations is peace. Is there anything more valuable than such a legacy? No amount of material wealth can compare to peace. But this peace cannot be achieved by one person. Everyone must become a messenger of peace and work together to achieve peace.”

This year’s peace walks highlighted the global peace advocacy movement, the Legislate Peace Campaign, recently launched to bring all wars to an end by establishing an enforceable law compatible with the “Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War.” This campaign calls on global citizens to unite as one to voice their demand for peace through adding their signatures.

In New York, women and youth groups as well as peace organizations gathered and signed their support for the Declaration at the Dag Hammarskjold Plaza across the UN Headquarters.

As of May 25, HWPL reported that not only over 500,000 signatures were collected from 154 countries in less than two months, but also many heads of state have written official letters of support.

Since the Declaration of World Peace was first proclaimed on May 25 2013, HWPL has worked on its international law initiative to draft an instrument for all States to adopt that ultimately promotes a culture of peace and ceases all wars. This Declaration not only encapsulates and supports all UN SDGs but also serves as a foundation for future works of peace.

  • PM Modi delivers a well-rounded address to US Congress

PM Modi delivers a well-rounded address to US Congress

WASHINGTON DC (TIP): When Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a joint sitting of US Congress on Wednesday, June 7, he became the sixth Indian PM to do so. Jawaharlal Nehru, Rajiv Gandhi, PV Narsimha Rao, Atal Behari Vajpayee and Dr. Manmohan Singh were the Prime Ministers of India who had addressed the US Congress.

Speaks of shared history, aspirations, concerns and strengths

In the course of his 45-minute speech, Modi covered all major aspects of the growing relationship between India and the US, particularly strategic ties and civil nuclear cooperation, and emphasized that the two countries should leave “constraints of the past” behind as the “foundations of the future are firmly in place”.

PM Modi also talked about terrorism. He said there was no good terrorist or bad terrorist. A terrorist is a terrorist. In an apparent reference to Pakistan he called for isolation of those who harbor and support terrorists and said that terrorism had to be fought with “one voice” as he commended the American Congress t for sending out a clear message by refusing to “reward” those who preach and practice terrorism for political gains.

Modi spoke candidly about the shared concerns and strengths of the two democracies. (Read the full text of Modi’s speech at www.theindianpanorama.news)

Modi had the Congress in splits for a minute, when he spoke of the political values the world’s oldest democracy shares with its largest one.

“I am told you are well-known for your bipartisanship,” he began, sending the US Congress members into peals of laughter and applause. “Well, you are not alone. Time and again, I have also witnessed a similar spirit in the Indian Parliament, especially our Upper House,” he added, referring to regularly stormy scenes in the US Senate, which presently has a Republican majority under a Democratic President.

“So, as you can see, we have many shared practices,” he rounded off, referring to his own troubles in the Rajya Sabha, where his government is in a minority.

  • President Obama endorses Hillary Clinton for President

President Obama endorses Hillary Clinton for President

WASHINGTON (TIP): US President Barack Obama formally endorsed Hillary Clinton’s White House bid on Thursday, June 9, and called for the Democratic Party to unite behind her after a protracted battle with Bernie Sanders for the party nomination.

Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee, said it “means the world” to her to have Obama’s support.

“It is absolutely a joy and an honor that President Obama and I over the years have gone from fierce competitors to true friends,” Clinton told Reuters in an interview.

Obama defeated Clinton in the 2008 Democratic primary and she went on to serve as secretary of state. Obama, who enjoys strong approval ratings after nearly eight years in office, will campaign with Clinton next week in Wisconsin, her campaign said.

“I don’t think there’s ever been someone so qualified to hold this office,” Obama said of Clinton in a video. “I’m with her. I am fired up, and I cannot wait to get out there and campaign for Hillary,” Obama said. Sanders, who met with Obama at the White House earlier on Thursday, said afterward he would work with Clinton to defeat Trump.

In his endorsement video, the president took time to say that Sanders had run “an incredible campaign,” and that he had shone “a spotlight on issues like economic inequality and the outsized influence of money in our politics.”

In fact, Obama said, those are messages the Democrats should embrace for the general election. And while Clinton and Sanders may have been rivals during the primary season, “they’re both patriots who love this country and they share a vision for the America that we all believe in.”

“This has been a hard-fought race,” Obama said. “I know some say these primaries have somehow left the Democratic Party more divided: Well, they said that eight years ago, as well.”

And just as Democrats’ victory in that election paved the way for significant national initiatives, Obama said he expects his party “won’t just win in November, we’ll build on the progress that we’ve made and we will win a brighter future for this country that we love.”

Although the declarations of Clinton’s presumptive victory were based on her delegate haul, Sanders is not technically eliminated from the race because he could theoretically sway the Democrats unbound “super” delegates to his side. Still, that would be a tough sell for the senator: Clinton won more primary contests, more of the popular vote and more regular pledged delegates.

The endorsement increases pressure on Sanders, a US senator from Vermont, to concede the race so the party can focus on campaigning against Donald Trump, the Republican presumptive nominee for the Nov. 8 election.

  • Modi’ in US: Standard templates unable to paint grand vision

Modi’ in US: Standard templates unable to paint grand vision

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had his biggest outing of the year in addressing the US Congress in Washington on Wednesday. Shorn of the atmospherics, Modi seems to have missed the moment to get counted as the world’s leading statesmen. True, there was a surfeit of platitudes and catchy phrases such as the Indo-US relationship having “overcome the hesitations of history”. Modi also provided a preview of how India sees today’s world — “(India is) already assuming her responsibilities in securing the Indian Ocean region” — and the problems — “absence of an agreed security architecture in Asia creates uncertainty”. The world by now is well acquainted with Brand Modi — words rolling out fluently, a commanding stage presence and an innovative twist at every show.

But a Prime Minister on his fourth visit to the US should have been more forthcoming about his vision of India than could be gleaned from his party’s election manifestoes. Modi can hardly hope to excite American businessmen with an anodyne rendering of his government’s priorities or talking about the snakes in the terrorist pit next door which managers of American security and their accomplices had incubated. His take on social harmony — “all the 1.25 billion of our citizens have freedom from fear, a freedom they exercise every moment of their lives” — too sounded a shade hollow when juxtaposed against the under-reported Human Rights Commission hearing at which US Congressmen slammed his government for violence against minorities.

However, after all the hits and misses are tallied, Modi accomplished his primary purpose of assuring the Americans that there is permanency in India’s affinity with the US in security, defense and climate change. He also managed to convey to the ordinary US politician, the country’s indispensability in the region — India was the first responder during natural calamities in Nepal, the Maldives and Sri Lanka — as well as its disagreement with the current global structures. Despite his dexterity as a communicator, Modi missed a trick or two in painting India as a country whose time has come.

  • 25 Indian Students Lacking Programming Skills Asked to Leave University

25 Indian Students Lacking Programming Skills Asked to Leave University

WASHINGTON — At least 25 Indian students in their first semester of the computer sciences program at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky, have been asked to return to India or find placement in other schools because they did not meet the admission standards of the varsity, The New York Times said June 7 even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on a U.S. visit.

Some 60 Indian students enrolled in the program in January and the university was said to have used international recruiters to enroll them.

James Gary, the chairman of Western Kentucky’s computer science program, told the Times that “almost 40” of the students did not meet the requirements of their admissions, even though they were offered remedial help by the university.

This means that 35 students may be allowed to continue while 25 “must leave,” the newspaper said.

Gary said permitting the students to continue in the program would “be throwing good money after bad,” because they were unable to write computer programs, a necessary part of the curriculum and a skill that U.S. schools teach to undergraduates.

“If they come out of here without the ability to write programs, that’s embarrassing to my department,” Gary said, explaining why the university could not permit them to continue.

The students had been admitted after a recruitment campaign in India where advertisements were run offering “spot admission” to the university, as well as tuition discounts.

The university Senate has now endorsed a resolution expressing concern about the recruitment campaign which was part of the university’s efforts to lift enrollment and revenue in the face of deep state budget cuts, the newspaper said.

The university, in a statement, said it had altered its international recruitment efforts in India. The school will also send members of the computer science faculty to India to meet with students before offers of admission are made in the future.

The chairman of the Indian Student Association at Western Kentucky University, Aditya Sharma, has expressed concern about the students who have been asked to leave.

“I definitely feel badly for these students,” said Sharma, a graduate student in public health administration. “They’ve come so far. They’ve invested money into it.”

But he admitted that some of the students had adopted what he called a “casual” approach to their studies. “They could not meet their G.P.A. (grade point average), so the university had to take this decision.”

Prime Minister Modi is on a three-day visit to the U.S.

This is not the first time that Indian students in the U.S. have faced problems.

In April, over 300 Indian students were forced to leave their respective schools in the U.S. The students were provided admissions as part of a fake university sting operation conducted by law enforcement agencies to expose a visa scam which allowed more than 1,000 foreigners to maintain student and work visas.

At least 10 Indian Americans were among 21 people arrested as part of the sting operation in which a fake university was created by U.S. authorities.

  • Modi in US | Highlights from India-US joint statement after Modi-Obama meet

Modi in US | Highlights from India-US joint statement after Modi-Obama meet

New Delhi: Support for India becoming a member of the exclusive Nuclear Suppliers Group, agreement on building six nuclear power plants in Andhra Pradesh, backing for India’s stand on terrorism vis-a-vis Pakistan and financial assistance for India’s clean energy initiatives are some of the key takeaways in an exhaustive India-US joint statement released in Washington on Tuesday.

The document, issued at the end of talks between US President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on his fourth visit to the US in less than two years, also lays out a road map for broad-ranging India-US collaboration in areas such as defence, trade and cyber security.

According to the statement, India and the US “pledged to pursue new opportunities to bolster economic growth and sustainable development, promote peace and security at home and around the world, strengthen inclusive, democratic governance and respect for universal human rights, and provide global leadership on issues of shared interest”.

Obama and Modi noted the “increasing convergence” in the strategic perspectives of India and the US and “emphasized the need to remain closely invested in each other’s security and prosperity”, the statement said.

On India’s entry into exclusive non-proliferation groups and regimes, the statement said India and the US “looked forward” to India’s imminent admission into the Missile Technology Control Regime.

“President Obama welcomed India’s application to join the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG)… The United States called on NSG participating governments to support India’s application when it comes up at the NSG plenary later this month,” it said.

In the area of nuclear power production, Obama and Modi welcomed the start of preparatory work for six reactors to be built by Westinghouse Electric Co. in Andhra Pradesh. India and the US Export-Import Bank are to work together on a financing package for the project, the statement said.

“Once completed, the project would be among the largest of its kind, fulfilling the promise of the US-India civil nuclear agreement and demonstrating a shared commitment to meet India’s growing energy needs while reducing reliance on fossil fuels… the two sides will work toward finalizing the contractual arrangements by June 2017,” the statement said.

Acknowledging India’s role in the accord agreed to at the Paris climate change talks in November, it said the US was committed to supporting India’s renewable energy programme and was working to spur greater investment in the area. Together, the two countries announced the creation of a $20 million US-India Clean Energy Finance (USICEF) initiative, equally supported by the US and India, which is expected to mobilize up to $400 million to provide clean and renewable electricity to up to 1 million households by 2020.

The statement also said that Modi and Obama “resolved that the United States and India should look to each other as priority partners in the Asia-Pacific and the Indian Ocean region”.

In maritime security, India and the US called for ensuring the freedom of navigation and overflight and exploitation of resources as per international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and settlement of territorial disputes by peaceful means. This oblique reference is aimed at China which is locked in maritime disputes with its smaller South East Asian neighbours in the South China Sea. China claims the entire South China Sea as its exclusive domain and has imposed flight restrictions and embargoed maritime routes through the disputed area.

In the area of defence cooperation, which “can be an anchor of stability”, the statement said the US “hereby recognizes India as a major defence partner”. The joint statement said India and the US would “explore agreements which would facilitate further expansion of bilateral defence cooperation in practical ways. In this regard, they welcomed the finalization of the text of the Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement,” which would allow the two countries to provide logistics support, refuelling and berthing facilities for each other’s warships and aircraft.

The US will “continue to work toward facilitating technology sharing with India to a level commensurate with that of its closest allies and partners. The leaders reached an understanding under which India would receive licence-free access to a wide range of dual-use technologies in conjunction with steps that India has committed to take to advance its export control objectives,” the statement said.

In a boost for Modi’s Make in India programme, the US would support the Indian initiative to develop defence industries through the export of goods and technologies consistent with US law.

In the area of cyber security, Obama and Modi said they would deepen cooperation and were committed to enhancing cyber collaboration on critical infrastructure, cyber crime, and malicious cyber activity by state and non-state actors.

On terrorism, Obama and Modi condemned “the recent terrorist incidents from Paris to Pathankot, from Brussels to Kabul” and “resolved to redouble their efforts, bilaterally and with other like-minded countries, to bring to justice the perpetrators of terrorism anywhere in the world and the infrastructure that supports them”.

The two countries pledged to work together to combat terrorist threats from extremist groups such as Al Qaida, Da’esh/ISIL (Islamic State), the Pakistan based Jaish-e Mohammad and Lashkar-e-Taiba, besides Indian gangster Dawood Ibrahim and his group and their affiliates “including through deepened collaboration on UN terrorist designations”.

The two countries have finalised an arrangement to facilitate the sharing of terrorist-screening information and “called for Pakistan to bring the perpetrators of the 2008 Mumbai and 2016 Pathankot terrorist attacks to justice”, the statement said.

To boost trade, India and the US resolved to “break down barriers to the movement of goods and services, and support deeper integration into global supply chains, thereby creating jobs and generating prosperity in both economies”, the statement said.

The two leaders agreed to facilitate the freer movement of people of both countries. The US also welcomed India’s interest in joining the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

  • India Contradicts US Claim Over Signing Climate Deal This Year

India Contradicts US Claim Over Signing Climate Deal This Year

The US claim that India will ratify the Paris climate change agreement this year was contradicted on Wednesday, June 8, by Indian official sources.

“We agreed to join as soon as possible and that is what is reflected in the Joint Statement as well,” said the sources indicating that India had not fixed a deadline to sign.

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s talks with President Barack Obama here, the US had said that India will try to sign this year the landmark accord to limit greenhouse gases.

The accord will become binding when at least 55 countries representing 55 per cent of global emissions formally join.

India’s signature is crucial as it will guarantee that the agreement will go into effect before the next US President takes over in January, with Republican presumptive nominee Donald Trump threatening to re-negotiate it.

The Joint Statement said that both India and the US recognised the urgency of climate change and share the goal of enabling entry into force of the Paris agreement as early as possible.

It said the US reaffirmed its commitment to join the agreement as soon as possible this year.

“India similarly has begun its processes to work toward this shared objective. The leaders reiterated their commitment to pursue low greenhouse gas emission development strategies in the pre-2020 period and to develop long-term low greenhouse gas emission development strategies,” it said.

Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar yesterday said there were regulatory and legal issues to be addressed and that the Indian government was “looking at ways and means” to take the agreement forward.

Hillary Clinton secures Democratic Presidential Nomination

Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has secured the number of delegates necessary to be presumptive Democratic presidential nominee in the November elections, according to a count carried out by the NBC channel on Monday and as reported by the Associated Press.

Becomes the first woman to top a major-party ticket in US

After her victory over Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders in Puerto Rico on Sunday and with the new support from superdelegates in recent days, Clinton has surpassed the 2,383 delegates needed as is now the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.

It has been a long and bruising primary season for Hillary as she becomes the first woman to lead a major party in the race for the White House.

The former first lady will almost certainly be proclaimed the Democratic party nominee at the July convention in Philadelphia, and will face the unofficial candidate for the Republican party Donald Trump in the elections.

NBC’s count was released one day ahead of the last major primary elections in which Democrats in New Jersey, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, New Mexico and California, the most populous state in the country, will go to the polls on Tuesday.

“According to the news, we are on the brink of a historic and unprecedented moment,” Clinton told her supporters.

She said there were “primaries to win”, in reference to Tuesday’s primaries.

Once named the party’s official candidate at the July convention, Clinton will become the first woman to enter the presidential race from one of the two major parties.

NBC calculated that Clinton has 2,384 delegates, one above the minimum required, including 1,812 delegates won in the primaries and 572 superdelegates.

Her rival, democratic socialist Bernie Sanders, has 1,566 delegates, 1,520 of them from the primaries and only 46 superdelegates, according to NBC.
