  • KANGANA RANAUT IS NOW PRAFUL PATEL

KANGANA RANAUT IS NOW PRAFUL PATEL

Here is the first look of ‘Simran’, in which Kangana Ranaut plays Praful Patel. While it’s known that her character is that of a Gujarati girl, we have learnt that the actress plays a housekeeper in this Hansal Mehta-directed film. The story revolves around a girl, her ambitions and how she gets addicted to the world of crime.

Produced by Bhushan Kumar and Shailesh Singh, the movie is scripted by Apurva Asrani. The film rolls this August and will be shot in the US. Since Kangana’s character is called Praful Patel, we wonder why the film is titled ‘Simran’. Guess that’s something Hansal is not in a hurry to reveal.

  • SIKH TEMPLE FILES FEDERAL LAWSUIT AGAINST TOWN OF OYSTER BAY, NY

SIKH TEMPLE FILES FEDERAL LAWSUIT AGAINST TOWN OF OYSTER BAY, NY

PLAINVIEW, NY (TIP): The Guru Gobind Singh Sikh Center of Plainview, New York (the “Temple”) filed, on June 30, 2016, a lawsuit against the Town of Oyster Bay, N.Y., its Town Board, and the individual members of the Board challenging the Town’s zoning regulations and the Board’s targeted “Resolution” effectively prohibiting the Temple’s constitutionally protected religious worship.

The Complaint alleges violations of the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution, the federal Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (“RLUIPA”) and the New York Constitution. It describes the Town’s arbitrary, capricious and illegal actions taken to prevent the Sikh congregation from continuing to worship as it has since 1987, on the same property in a new replacement Temple building.

In 2014, the Temple applied to the Town to replace its aging house of worship with a modern facility, located at 1065 Old Country Road, Plainview, NY. In 2014 the Town approved the Temple’s site plan and a building permit was issued on March 7th, 2014. The Temple then demolished its existing building, and in October 2014, construction of the new Sikh Temple building commenced.

In direct response to local residents’ complaints, the Town issued a Stop Work Order on July 2, 2015, when construction was nearly complete. The Complaint asserts that such unfounded order was generated by local resident hostility against the Temple and its congregants. In order to accommodate a resolution, the Temple submitted a new site plan that was approved and then nullified by the Town Board, which then directed the Temple to re-apply for site plan approval. This would have left the Temple and its Congregation without a house of worship for several years.

Paul Savad, lead attorney for the Temple said: “Unless the Town can quickly come to terms with the Temple, we will proceed to a jury trial, and will recover substantial money damages, with the plaintiff’s legal fees also reimbursed by the Town.” “The Town issued illegal and improper stop work orders based upon political, biased, improper, non-existent offsite parking and environmental review issues.” “The approved site plan, for which a building permit was issued, provides 64 onsite parking spaces, although the Town Zoning Ordinance requires 21 onsite spaces; and no environmental review for the project was or is required because the new temple is a nearly complete replacement of a structure, in kind, on the same site”

Roman Storzer, co-counsel for the Temple said: “I’ve never seen a violation of RLUIPA as blatant as this.” “To process the Temple’s applications, accept their fees, approve the building, allow them to spend enormous sums for construction, and then to prevent its completion, is as significant a burden on constitutionally protected religious worship as I’ve ever seen.”

Religious land uses are protected from undue burdens, discrimination and arbitrary treatment under RLUIPA, which was passed by Congress in 2000 to prevent discrimination against religious institutions in land use regulation.

Along with litigator and trial lawyer, Paul Savad of Savad Churgin, LLP, based in Nanuet, New York, Plaintiff is represented by Roman Storzer of Storzer and Associates, P.C., based in Washington, DC. Mr. Storzer has successfully represented scores of religious entities in RLUIPA and First Amendment cases throughout the United States. He is also the former Director of Litigation for the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty.

  • Modi expansion: Shiv Sena roars, Akali Dal chooses silence

Modi expansion: Shiv Sena roars, Akali Dal chooses silence

When asked to comment on the recent changes at the Centre, a Shiv Sena leader observed: “It was the BJP government’s expansion, not the NDA’s”. NDA coalition partners have reason to be unhappy. They have not just been left out in the ministry expansion; they were neither consulted nor briefed. Basic niceties and coalition dharma, it appears, are no longer in fashion. By now reconciled to the way it is treated in “Modi Durbar”, the Akali Dal leadership has stopped complaining. Only the Shiv Sena makes public its anger at the deliberate neglect. Unafraid of jeopardizing its arrangement in Maharashtra, the Shiv Sena’s reaction varied from “we do not beg for Cabinet berths” to questioning the caliber of Modi’s ministers. In the BJP’s growth and expansion scheme in states, allies serve a limited purpose.

BJP leaders’ arrogant behavior annoys the Shiv Sena but the Akali Dal has apparently learnt to put up with it. Whatever the portfolio, it appears content with the Badal bahu’s adjustment in the ministry. The Centre’s “discrimination with Punjab” used to be a recurring theme of Chief Minister Badal’s speeches at one time. It is a different tune he plays today. If he does make a demand – like seal the border – it is more to shrug off responsibility for the drug menace than genuinely find a solution. Larger issues – terror attacks, neglect of agriculture, meagre hikes in MSPs, river cleanup, Central stand on SYL etc – no longer agitate the Badals as they did in the past. Only Delhi Akali leader Manjit Singh GK has shown some courage while accusing the Modi government of having “the same mindset as the Congress on the issue of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots”.

The RBI has pointed to a loss of Rs 12,000 crore of bank loans in the wheat procurement in Punjab, but both the Central and Punjab governments have failed to come clean on the issue. A cover-up in this day and age does not last long. An otherwise aggressive Akali leadership turns meek while taking up Punjab’s legitimate demands with the Centre. It has a right to keep its peace with Modi but, as a Congress leader has pointed out, Punjab is under-represented at the Centre.

  • Getting More Men of Color to Teach Our Children Will Lift Our Communities

Getting More Men of Color to Teach Our Children Will Lift Our Communities

Creating inclusive schools is not only about classrooms having students with a wide range of backgrounds and academic strengths-our teachers should also reflect the City’s diverse workforce and represent different ethnic backgrounds, languages, and cultures. However, only 8.3 percent of our 76,000 dynamic teachers are men of color, while around 43 percent of our students-about 430,000 boys-are male students of color.

I am committed to increasing opportunities for highly qualified young men of color to enter the teaching profession. We’ve asked ourselves: how can we recruit, train and support highly skilled men and inspire them to choose education as a career?

We’ve come together as a City – across the DOE, NYC’s Young Men’s Initiative, CUNY, the Mayor’s Center for Economic Opportunity, Teach for America, NYC Teaching Fellows, and other valued partners – to address this imbalance by recruiting more male teachers of color through the NYC Men Teach initiative. The initiative aims to recruit 1,000 males of color to work in our City’s schools by the 2018-19 school year.

Yesterday (June 29), we kicked off NYC Men Teach with a hiring fair, networking opportunities, and a panel discussion. At this kick-off, men of color who are interested in teaching met with principals about potential job opportunities in their schools, and heard from seasoned teachers and industry influencers who offered guidance and insight on the teaching profession.

One of the goals of this initiative is to enable students to see successful male role models of color in their classrooms. During a recent school visit, I saw students honoring “heroes” in their lives, an activity devoted to the men who’ve supported students during their academic career. Classroom activities such as these are wonderful first steps; however, we must make a concerted effort to get the men in our school communities to expand their involvement in the lives of students. Recruiting men of color to teach our children will help lift our families and our communities.

I have high expectations for the impact of the NYC Men Teach program. Not only will our future teachers influence their students, but through the program’s mentorship program and professional learning opportunities, male teachers of color will build their leadership skills critical in the classroom setting, and learn that their professional dreams are attainable. Most importantly, they will impart those crucial life skills to their students. I encourage men of color who are interested in becoming teachers to complete the NYC Men Teach interest form. Parents, families, and community members who would like to learn more about this initiative can visit the NYC Men Teach website.

NYC Men Teach will have a fundamental impact on our students’ academic, social, and emotional growth. As a lifelong educator, a grandmother, and a New Yorker, I am excited about this effort and what it means for all students to see themselves reflected in the teachers who guide their learning and growth.

  • Dhaka condemns eidgah terror attack as ‘anti-Islam, anti- government’

Dhaka condemns eidgah terror attack as ‘anti-Islam, anti- government’

NEW DELHI (TIP): As Dhaka reeled under another terror attack at the biggest Eid gathering in the country, Bangladesh government believes this is an attempt to destabilize the Sheikh Hasina government in the garb of Islamism.

Speaking to TOI from Dhaka, Hasanul Haq Inu, information minister, said, “These attackers are monsters in the garb of Islamism. This is a political move, aimed at toppling the Hasina government.” He said the security forces were largely successful in limiting the damage of the attack, though two police officers had died.

“We have been able to capture three attackers, they are being interrogated now. This is a recurring pattern,” he said, denying the presence of transnational groups. “They are anti-Islam, anti-religion and anti-government,” he said.

While there was no immediate claim, it was no coincidence that the Sholakia Eidgah mosque near Kishoreganj, some 130km from Dhaka, was targeted. The imam who led the prayers, Maulana Fariduddin Masud, has been a vocal opponent of Islamist terror. Earlier this year, he led a fatwa campaign against militancy, which was signed by over one lakh clerics. His Eid congregation on Thursday was over three-lakh strong.

Coming a week after the attack in a Dhaka cafe, which has been claimed by ISIS, Thursday’s attack has rattled Bangladesh, which has seen a string of targeted assassinations lately.

In New Delhi, President Pranab Mukherjee condemned the attack saying, “I condemn the perpetrators of this attack in the strongest of terms. This is the second terrorist attack in a week occurring in Bangladesh. The (Bangladeshi) people and government are engaged in a brave struggle against the evil forces of extremism and violence. The government of India will strongly stand by our brothers and sisters of Bangladesh in this fight. We will extend every support possible to enable the Bangladesh government to defeat these forces whose goal is to spread hatred, chaos and instability.”

Security sources close to Sheikh Hasina said on condition of anonymity that her government has decided to take a much stronger stand against this kind of violence.

After initial questioning of the captured attackers, it transpired that one of the attackers is a local who belongs to Dhaka or one of its suburbs, and another is from Dinajpur. Security sources said they had recovered firearms and machetes from them.

Sources from the site said there were about 6-10 attackers. Among them, one was apprehended by the police when he was caught carrying a machete. The person tried to strike a policeman while the other opened fire.

Security officials said the intention of the attackers seemed to be to enter the namaz ground and unleash mayhem there. However, the incident happened around 500 yards away from the namaz ground.

“Two policemen, an attacker and a woman were killed during the attack,” the country’s national police spokesman AKM Shahidur Rahman told agencies. “Nine policemen were also injured. They are in a critical condition and have been shifted to a military hospital in Dhaka.”

  • White cop kills black man, girlfriend streams it live

White cop kills black man, girlfriend streams it live

WASHINGTON (TIP): America’s shame was live broadcast to the world on a chilling July 7 evening with yet another shooting involving a white cop targeting a black male.

The 9 minutes and 30 seconds video feed that an African-American woman streamed on Facebook Live after police shot her boyfriend when they were pulled over for a broken taillight is so graphic that even radio stations, let alone TV networks, used it sparingly with caution advisories.

The blood that steeped across the young man’s white tshirt may well have been suffusing the continental expanse of the US that has repeatedly seen cold-blooded police excesses on African-American males.

The live feed, which Diamond Reynolds started broadcasting on social media moments after a cop shot her boyfriend Philando Castile on a Minnesota street, shows her calmly relating the events even as the hysterical policeman, his voice quavering with tension despite the weapon he wields, asks her to keep her hands in sight. “I will, sir, I will,” she says respectfully, as she pans the camera to her boyfriend’s bloodied arm and chest.

She says they were pulled over for a broken tail light and the officer shot him as he was reaching for his wallet in his back pocket to show his driver’s licence. He had told the officer he was in possession of a licensed firearm. “I told you not to reach for it… I told to get his hand open,” the cop screams hysterically. “You told him to get his ID, sir,” the woman explains with astonishing calm, considering the scene beside her, “…his driver’s licence.” Then, right there, the life goes out of her boyfriend. “Oh my god, please don’t l tell me he’s dead,” Reynolds says, still more in control of herself than the feverish, panicked cop screaming. “Please don’t tell me my boyfriend went just like that. Please don’t tell me lord that he’s gone… please don’t tell me. Please officer don’t tell me that you just did this to him.” She starts to break down.

“You just shot four bullets into him, sir. He was just getting his licence and registration out, sir,” she cries. A young girl can be seen and is heard saying at one point, t “I’m scared, Mommy.”

Reynolds is then asked to get out of the car by another officer and walk backwards towards them and drop down on her knees. It’s a scene tens of thousands of black people in Americans know all too well, and it happens all too often. But even going by the blood-thirsty matchismo that American men in uniform -particularly its white cops -show towards African-Americans, this appeared, for all purposes, a cold-blooded execution.

US State Department to reopen probe into ‘#emailgate’ | Hillary Clinton

WASHINGTON (TIP): In a dramatic turnaround, the US State Department has said it will reopen its own probe into the allegations that presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton violated rules by using a private email server while she was secretary of state.

“Given the Department of Justice has now made its announcement, the State Department intends to conduct its internal review,” State Department spokesman John Kirby said in a statement. Earlier, the State Department had suspended its own investigations after the FBI started its investigation into the matter. The US Department of Justice on Wednesday, July 6, had closed the case and decided against filing any charges against Clinton.

“I cannot provide specific information about the Department’s review, including what information we are evaluating,” Kirby said. The internal probe is likely to include several of Clinton’s personal staff including Cheryl Mills, Huma Abedin and Jake Sullivan. “We will aim to be as expeditious as possible, but we will not put artificial deadlines on the process. Our goal will be to be as transparent as possible about our results, while complying with our various legal obligations,” Kirby said. “I’m not able to make commitments today one way or the other about what we will be able to disclose?” he asked in a statement.

  • Marvel paints Donald Trump into a supervillain!

Marvel paints Donald Trump into a supervillain!

WASHINGTON: Donald Trump has now officially become a villain! Not literally but as a comic-book character in a Spider-Man spin-off story by Marvel Comics which depicts an “amorphous, villainous” avatar of the presumptive Republican presidential candidate.

Marvel debuted the villainous version of Trump in “Spider-Gwen Annual 1”.

The Marvel villain MODOK or ‘Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing’ – a giant head with arms, legs and a thirst for destruction – was reimagined in the Spider-Man universe as the real estate tycoon, the Washington Examiner reported.

In his inaugural panel, MODOK also known as MODAAK or ‘Mental Organism Designed as America’s King’, the “amorphous, villainous” Trump-faced antagonist says – “If America will not act, M.O.D.A.A.K must!” the report said.

The storyline involves Captain America going up against various redesigned villains, including MODOK and a version of Baron Blood who strongly resembles the late pop star Prince.

The action takes place in an alternate Spider-Man universe where Gwen Stacey – girlfriend of Peter Parker, the first and most well-known Spider-Man – was bitten by a radioactive spider instead and thus gained its powers.

This is not the first time the comic book industry has appropriated 70-year-old Trump’s image.

At New York Comic Con in October, artists in attendance were asked to name their favorite supervillain and then draw him or her as Trump.

TRUMP SAYS CONSIDERING 10 CANDIDATES FOR VICE PRESIDENT

WASHINGTON (TIP): Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential candidate, on July 7 said he has shortlisted 10 potential running mates.

While Trump did not disclose the names, two potential shortlisted candidates Senators Bob Corker and Joni Ernest indicated that they were not in the race.

Among his possible running mates being highly speculated are Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Chris Christie, Governor of New Jersey and Senator Jeff Sessions.

“Well, I’m actually looking at 10 people, and three or four called me up, very big names, Senate and governor and all. And they want to be considered. And we’re looking very, very strongly,” Trump told Fox News in an interview.

“I met with Joni. She was terrific, and very supportive. As you know, Bob was with me yesterday and he told me everything that he really would like to do and Bob is a terrific guy,” Trump said.

Later Corker and Ernest said they were not in the race for vice presidential pick.

“It’s a highly political job, and that’s not who I am. We had a very open conversation about that, and actually, we have been very candid about it from the very beginning of our meetings,” Corker told The Washington Post.

Trump said Christie is “certainly” still in the race and described him as a friend and a great guy.

He also praised Gingrich saying “Newt is Newt, you know? Great guy. Tough and smart, and just a fantastic guy”. The real estate tycoon from New York said his list of potential vice presidential candidates also includes two generals.

“Well, I like the generals. I like the concept of the generals. We’re thinking about actually there are two of them that are under consideration,” he said to a question. Trump is expected to announce his choice for vice president before the Republican presidential convention in Cleveland later this month.

“I have tremendous people and tremendous interest. We have wonderful people that we’re considering. We will make a wise choice. I’ve gotten to know some of them very well over the past week. And I’ll be deciding sometime prior to the convention,” Trump said.

“I’m looking for somebody that can be a great vice president, can do a great job, has presidential quality and can also help legislatively and other ways so that wonderful legislation can be passed for the people,” Trump said in response to a question.

WASHINGTON (TIP): FBI director James Comey told lawmakers on July 7 that Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton did not lie to the FBI about her handling of emails as secretary of state and did not break the law.

Comey told a Republican-led oversight panel in the US House of Representatives that no reasonable prosecutor would charge Clinton with a crime over her use of private email servers while she was secretary of state, some of which were used to transmit classified information.

US sanctions North Korean leader Kim Jong Un over rights abuses

WASHINGTON (TIP): The United States on July 6 sanctioned North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for the first time, citing “notorious abuses of human rights,” in a move that diplomats say will incense the nuclear-armed country, reports AFP.

The sanctions, the first to target any North Koreans for rights abuses, affect property and other assets within US jurisdiction and extend to 10 other individuals and five government ministries and departments, the US treasury department said in a statement.

The sanctions place those officials on a blacklist making them radioactive to major financial institutions and companies while freezing any assets they may already have in US banks.

“Under Kim Jong Un, North Korea continues to inflict intolerable cruelty and hardship on millions of its own people, including extrajudicial killings, forced labor, and torture,” Acting Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Adam J Szubin said in the statement.

In North Korea, the leader is the subject of state-mandated adulation and considered infallible.

HOUSTON (TIP): A 27-year-old Indian, accused of sexually assaulting six girls, at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park in the US state of Florida has been arrested, police said, July 6.

The accused has been identified as Aman Bhatia who is living in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

According to the arrest affidavit, several adults and a lifeguard confronted Bhatia and then deputies arrived.

The group then complained about the incident. In all, six people reported similar incidents involving Bhatia, deputies said.

During police questioning, Bhatia said he broke his glasses in the wave pool.

Bhatia said he bumped into several people in the wave pool and would apologies, but that he never intentionally ‘touched’ the teens.

Bhatia has been charged with four counts of lewd lascivious molestation on a child over 12-years-old, but under the age of 16, as well as two counts of battery.

Disney has banned him from all of its amusement parks in Florida for life.

Indian-American businessman gets 15 months for fraud

WASHINGTON (TIP): A 61-year-old Indian-American businessman has been jailed for 15 months and fined for conspiring to illegally obtain over USD six million meant for small and disadvantaged businesses in the US.

Tarsem Singh, a businessman from Fairfax in Virginia, pled guilty to the charge in last December in the US District Court for the District of Columbia.

He was sentenced by Judge B Walton, who also fined Singh USD 25,000 and ordered him to pay USD 1,19,165 in restitution.

After his prison term, Singh will be placed on three years of supervised release and required to perform community service.

He was sentenced on Tuesday to 15 months for conspiring to commit fraud on the US by illegally obtaining over USD 6 million in contracts that were meant for small, disadvantaged businesses, according to the US Attorney’s office district of Columbia.

The fraudulent activities involved the US Small Business Administration’s program which was created to help small, disadvantaged businesses compete in the American economy and access the federal procurement market.

According to the government’s evidence, from January 12, 2000 through January 12, 2009, Singh and his wife, through a firm described in court documents as “Company A” which specialized in construction and renovating and altering buildings, obtained millions in federal contracts.

Shortly after “Company B” was certified, Singh caused himself to be named its vice-president. As the vice-president of “Company B”, Singh was contacted by government personnel about federal contracts and, in some circumstances, made the decision on whether the company would bid on these projects.

Throughout the life of the contracts obtained through this scheme, “Company B” had only one employee who performed work on the projects it was awarded. Singh used a combination of “Company A” personnel and sub-contractors to staff projects awarded to “Company B”.

From August 2009 through December 2010, “Company B” obtained a total of USD 6,808,552 in more than 25 federal contracts in this manner from the General Services Administration. The scheme generated at least USD 90,397 in profits for “Company A”. In addition, Singh received at least USD 28,768 in compensation attributable to the contracts.

To disguise the activities, Singh took a variety of steps, including obtaining magnetic logos.

  • FLOP SIDE to the AAPI Convention

FLOP SIDE to the AAPI Convention

New York Indian American community had reason to feel proud when a New Yorker Dr. Ajay Lodha took over as the national President of American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI), an organization which leads the largest ethnic medical society in the United States, representing the interests of over 100,000 Indian American physicians. And what he said in his inaugural address at the AAPI convention, after taking over on July 3, made the entire medical fraternity associated with AAPI to celebrate. He said he wants AAPI to be “more vibrant, united, transparent, politically engaged, ensuring active participation of young physicians, increasing membership, enabling that AAPI’s voice is heard in the corridors of power, and thus taking AAPI to new heights.”

However, it was not all flip side. There was a terrible flop side to the Convention.

This year saw unprecedented incidents and media mishandling by the leadership of AAPI headed by Dr Seema Jain and Dr Sanjay Jain.

“Shocking and stunning”, as The Indian Express described, Rene Lobo, a top journalist, was “humiliated” at the convention.

Indian Express narrates the incident thus. Sunday, July 3 afternoon at AAPI gave a big shock to Rene Lobo, a top career journalist in this country.

    File Image - Rene Lobo
    File Image – Rene Lobo

A highly respected professional, Rene was stunned when Dr Sanjay Jain, who is husband of Dr Seema Jain, the outgoing President of AAPI, and claimed to be COO of the convention ordered her to “get out” of the convention.

Rene was at the venue to cover the event that afternoon at the just-concluded convention, which saw some extraordinary humiliating experience for others.

Rene was covering the Fashion Show at the time when Dr Jain asked her to leave and forced her “unformat” her camera chip. When she offered to even show the email invitation, Dr Sanjay Jain told her to leave immediately as she was not “invited” to AAPI, an NGO.

Coincidentally, several AAPI members had interacted with Rene at the convention. Dr Sanjay Jain threatened to call security if she didn’t leave while a soft-spoken and polite Rene stood shocked.

Several other respected doctors saw this behavior of Dr Sanjay Jain and how Rene was humiliated before she left the venue.

ITV is one of the pioneering media house founded by a highly respected medical professional, Late Dr B. Vishwanath, and Rene has been the top television host at ITV for 20 plus years. She has hosted many top medical professionals and has done extraordinary service in the media industry. She is highly acknowledged for her professionalism and respected by the mainstream including top public and political leaders.

The other indecent incident involved a guest of honor and a great performer Shankar Mahadevan who, like Renee Lobo, was treated shabbily and humiliated. According to a report published in The Indian Express, North America Edition, the grand finale of the conclave was a live performance by Shankar Mahadevan, who was accompanied by his son Sidharth Mahadevan, along with Antra Mitra and Sukriti Kakkar, who are well known in the Music industry as the “Young Generation Artists.”

As per eye witnesses, Dr. Sanjay Jain, husband of outgoing President Dr. Seema Jain, Dr. Rita Ahuja, Chairwoman of the 2016 Annual Convention and another Doctor (name unknown) rushed to the stage and asked Sidharth Mahadevan to leave stage while he was singing a song, which apparently was his last song.

Sidharth’s microphone was also snatched away, while the trio demanded Shankar come on stage and perform. A humiliated Shankar Mahadevan kept his cool and came onto the stage and performed while publicly declaring that it was his last performance for AAPI. His pain and anguish was visible as he repeatedly mentioned the humiliation suffered by his son and band by being thrown out of stage while performing. He has also mentioned this in his tweet.

AAPI must do some introspection and restrain their members from misbehavior of the kind displayed in the incidents at the convention. Or else, some may find themselves in trouble for their high handedness, just as it is all too well known some of AAPI members got involved in unethical and fraudulent medical practices, with quite a few having been jailed.

  • Dr. Ajay Lodha Takes over as President of AAPI

Dr. Ajay Lodha Takes over as President of AAPI

NEW YORK CITY (TIP): New York Indian American community had reason to feel proud when a New Yorker Dr. He said he wants AAPI to be “more vibrant, united, transparent, politically engaged, ensuring active participation of young physicians, increasing membership, enabling that AAPI’s voice is heard in the corridors of power, and thus taking AAPI to new heights.” Surely, for AAPI members, here was a man with a vision and his words indicated a certain determination and resolve.

Dr. Lodha, who was administered the oath of office as the President of AAPI during the 34th annual convention in New York on July 3rd, 2016 vowed to take the more than three decades old organization to the new heights and “bring all the AAPI Chapters, Regions, Members of the Executive Committee and Board of Trustees to work cohesively and unitedly for the success of AAPI and the realization of its noble mission.”

Acknowledging that leading AAPI is a daunting challenge, Dr. Lodha said, “I’m very honored, privileged and consider myself fortunate to announce that I have an excellent group of dedicated, hardworking, and loyal officers and executive committee members who are with me to take AAPI to new heights.”

Dr. Lodha received the gavel from Dr. Seema Jain, the out-going president of AAPI as the more than 2,000 delegates cheered loudly, greeting the new President of AAPI. Along with him, Dr. Gautam Samadder as President-Elect, Dr. Naresh Parikh as Vice President, Dr. Suresh Reddy as Secretary, and Dr. Manju Sachdev as the Treasurer of AAPI, assumed charge in the presence of leading luminaries from across the nation. Dr. Madhu Agarwal assumed charge as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, AAPI from the out-going chairman, Dr. Aravind Pillai. He stressed the importance of having YPS president Aditya Desai and MSRF President Atul Nakshi along with a diversified group of regional directors. “Their leadership will help us move forward with our current and future initiatives.”

An Internist by profession, Dr. Lodha has had experiences in leading almost all areas of Medicine. He owns two Nursing Homes on Long Island, New York and has been credited to be the founder of the Accountable Care Organization (ACO) and the Independent Physicians Association (IPA).

A graduate of RNT Medical College, Udaipur, Rajasthan, Dr. Lodha completed his Residency at the Flushing Hospital, NY. He is the founder and president of Queens Medical Services, a primary care practice with two locations serving Queens, NY since 1995 and is a partner in Hillaire and Nesconset Nursing homes. Dr. Ajay Lodha was appointed a member of the Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos’s MWBE Advisory Council last year.

The New York-based physician and leader, who was honored with the prestigious Ellis Island Medals of Honor on May 7th, this year, rose through the ranks of AAPI and has been elected the President of AAPI. He is a recipient of Lawrence J. Scherr Award of Excellence for being an Outstanding Physi-cian. He has also been honored for Out-standing Contributions to Research & Hypertension Department at the Flushing Hospital, NY. In 2008, he was bestowed with the Nargis Dutt Memorial Foundation Physician of the Year Award.

Ajay Lodha hides a power house of entrepreneurial skills. Dr. Lodha has extensive background of overseeing quality assurance and quality improvement. He is a past president of RANA and RAJMAAI (Rajasthan Medical Alumni Associ-ation Inc.),

A past President of AAPI-QLI, Dr. Lodha was a former Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President of Caritas Health Care System representing St. John’s Hospital and Mary Immaculate Hospital in New York.

Dr. Lodha was appreciative of increased involvement of women within AAPI. “We have a woman as the chair of the Board of Trustees, a woman treasurer, and 33% of this year’s regional directors are women. Women face the added challenge of maintaining the household in addition to their medical careers and their role in AAPI. I am looking forward to a great women’s forum from our women leaders and chair not only in USA but also in India. I salute all the women leaders,” he said.

Soon after assuming office as the President of AAPI, Dr. Lodha declared that he will make every possible effort to restore AAPI’s image and enhance cohesiveness among different Chapters and Regions of AAPI. “When our founders first conceived of AAPI, they could not have imagined how well it would grow and develop. Let us not forget the achievements of those who have come before me. Their hard work and dedication serves as both an inspiration and a challenge to me,” he stated with gratitude and appreciation for the founders of this noble organization.

According to him, “The growing clout of the physicians of Indian origin in the United States is seen everywhere as several physicians of Indian origin hold critical positions in the healthcare, academic, research and administration across the nation.” Dr. Lodha’s vision for AAPI is to increase the awareness of APPI globally and help its voice heard in the corridors of power. “I would like to see us lobby Congress for an increase in the number of available Residency Positions so as to help alleviate the shortage of Doctors.”

AAPI has been able to serve as a platform in helping young physicians coming from India to seek residencies and help them in settlement and get jobs. Knowing that AAPI’s growth lies with the younger generation, Dr. Lodha has made it his priority to support and promote YPS and MSRF, the future of AAPI. “We need to host more educational and social activities to get young physicians more involved, and be able to stay connected with AAPI. That younger physicians and MSRF members feel fully integrated into AAPI and take more active roles. They should feel that they are benefitting by joining AAPI, which is, an extended family and they can turn to when in need of support and guidance,” he says. He wants to increase AAPI membership by offering more benefits and opportunities for mem-bers.

The new executive committee members: Dr. Ajay Lodha, President, Dr. Gautam Samadder President-Elect, Dr. Naresh Parikh, Vice President, Dr. Suresh Reddy, Secretary, and Dr. Manju Sachdev, Treasurer of AAPI

Dr. Lodha, with the active support from the General Body, wants to “re-activate AAPI – HEALTH- PAC, commonly known as HEALTH- POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE, which will help raise funds amongst its members to advocate its Health Care issues to give a higher profile.” He urged all interested members to support and join the H-PAC by making a contribution, which will handle the HPAC matters and comply with the reporting requirements. Dr. Lodha wants to offer honorary memberships to past US Presidents, Senators and Congressmen, which will “bring us higher level of recognition and profile in the USA.

“In my role as the President of AAPI in the coming year, I will continue to dedicate my services for the growth of AAPI. I am sure AAPI will grow multiple folds under the current team and will put all my efforts to make sure all the programs supersede from the past.”

One of the major objectives of founding AAPI was to offer a platform and opportunities for members to give back to their mother land and the adopted nation. Realizing this, the new President believes that AAPI members will be provided with opportunities to support charitable activities in India and in the United States and increase donations to AAPI Charitable Foundation.

Endowed with the desire to give back to his motherland and lead AAPI to identify and invest in the delivery of cost effective, efficient and advanced medical care in India, Dr. Lodha says, “AAPI does a lot of work in India. The Global Healthcare Summit 2016, planned to be held in Udaipur, Rajasthan, from December 28-30th this year, will be a great way of achieving our objectives for mother India.”

In 2008, Dr. Lodha was part of a coalition that built a state-of-the-art 11 bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit for Government Hospital located in Udaipur, Rajasthan, India – free care is given to all the patients. Dr. Lodha in his commitment to the health of the community has organized numerous Health Fairs, Blood Pressure Screenings, and Medical Awareness programs as well as the delivery of educational materials at churches, temples and senior centers.

Financial stability is an important area, where Dr. Lodha wants to focus on as President, and promises “to make sincere efforts in making AAPI financially stronger by increasing fund raising activities.”

His leadership and commitment were much appreciated during the nine city Shreya Ghoshal Fund Raising tour by AAPI. Under the stewardship of Past President Dr. Narendra Kumar, the pioneering event generated a record $1.25 million and transformed AAPI’s financial strength as he took over as a Treasurer in early 2012. He was responsible for bringing complete transparency in accounting and keeping the books up to date.

US District Attorney Preet Bharara with AAPI leaders at the podiumDr. Lodha is committed to upholding and further augment the ideals for which AAPI stands. “I am confident that my experience, work ethic and firsthand experience in organizing Conventions and fundraisers are best suited to carry on the responsibilities and lead this noble organization to new heights.” In all of his efforts, Dr. Lodha wants to work with his executive committee and all branches of AAPI membership in a congenial and non-competitive manner, focusing on the noble mission of this prestigious organization. His experiences in organizing conferences and meetings which help to bring members together and attract new members is vital to the success of the organization.

The growing influence of doctors of Indian heritage is evident, as increasingly physicians of Indian origin hold critical positions in the healthcare, academic, research and administrative positions across the nation. With their hard work, dedication, compassion, and skills, they have thus carved an enviable niche in the American medical community. AAPI’s role has come to be recognized as vital among members and among lawmakers. AAPI is also transitioning into a multiyear thinking and behavior by maintaining core continuity.

Dr. Lodha expressed his sincere gratitude and appreciation to the media, for their continued support. ” As it is said by Mark Twain: “There are only two forces that can carry light to all corners of the globe -the sun in the heaven and the media down here.”

Dr. Seema Jain, outgoing President passes over the gavel to Dr. Ajay Lodha

Dr. Lodha calls upon AAPI members to join in this historic journey: “AAPI’s mission is clear, our programs will continue to strive and our impact is infectious on benefiting society. Today I ask you to set aside your differences, and join me in this noble journey to make our mission possible.’

Dr. Lodha lives on Long Island, New York with his wife Dr. Smita and their two children Amit and Shweta. AAPI will continue to be an active player in crafting the delivery of healthcare in the most efficient manner in the United States. “We will strive for equality in healthcare delivery globally.” Dr. Lodha is confident that with the blessings of elders, and the strong support from the total membership of AAPI and his family, he will be able to take AAPI to stability, growth and greater achievements. “A new era has begun. AAPI will continue to discover her own potential to be an active and vital player in shaping the landscape of national healthcare delivery system with a focus on health maintenance than disease intervention,” Dr. Lodha said.

5 police officers killed in Dallas Ambush

DALLAS (TIP): At least one sniper shot 14 people, killing five police officers, in Dallas late Thursday, July 7 night, turning a peaceful protest against the police shootings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, Minnesota, into a scene of chaos and carnage.

The wounded include seven police officers and two civilians. It was the deadliest day for US law enforcement since the 9/11 attacks.

Micah X. Johnson, 25, of Mesquite
Micah X. Johnson, 25, of Mesquite

One suspect has been identified as Micah X. Johnson, according to media reports. Johnson died after a standoff with police that lasted hours and ended when the police sent in a robot with a bomb and detonated it, killing him.

This is an ongoing breaking news story, meaning the facts are likely to change as events continue and new information emerges.

Highlights● A few minutes before 9 pm local Dallas time, as the protest was ending, gunfire rang out.
    ● At least one sniper shot 12 police officers and two civilians from elevated positions along the protest route, according to Dallas police and Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings.
    ● Five of those officers have died: 4 were Dallas Police Department officers and one was a Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) officer.
    ● The suspect killed in a standoff with police was Micah X. Johnson of Mesquite, Texas, according to the Associated Press and the Los Angeles Times. The US Army confirmed Johnson had been an enlisted soldier, who had served a tour in Afghanistan, the AP reported.
    ● Johnson was involved in an armed standoff with police that lasted for several hours. According to police, the standoff ended when police sent in a “bomb robot” and the resulting explosion killed the suspect.
    ● The 9 people who were injured do not have “life-threatening” injuries, according to Rawlings, and Dallas Police Chief David Brown stated that most of them have now been released from the hospital.
    ● Brown said that during the “negotiations” with the armed suspect, the suspect said he was “upset about Black Lives Matter” and recent police shootings. The suspect said he was “upset with white people” and that he “wanted to kill white people, especially white officers.”

Obama says US police must reform and calls the incident as “Vicious, Calculated and Despicable”

US President Barack Obama said that the fatal shootings of black men by police this week were “symptomatic of a broader set of racial disparities” and all Americans should be troubled by these incidents of brutality.

“All of us as Americans should be troubled by these shootings, because these are not isolated incidents. They’re symptomatic of a broader set of racial disparities that exist in our criminal justice system,” Obama said.

“Last year, African-Americans were shot by police at more than twice the rate of whites. African-Americans are arrested at twice the rate of whites. African American defendants are 75 per cent more likely to be charged with offenses carrying mandatory minimums. They receive sentences that are almost 10 per cent longer than comparable whites arrested for the same crime,” he said after landing in Warsaw, Poland, to attend the NATO Summit, according to an official statement here. So that if you add it all up, the African American and Hispanic population, who make up only 30 per cent of the general population, make up more than half of the incarcerated population. Now, these are facts,” he said.

“And when incidents like this occur, there’s a big chunk of our fellow citizenry that feels as if because of the color of their skin, they are not being treated the same. And that hurts. And that should trouble all of us,” Obama said.

“This is not just a black issue. It’s not just a Hispanic issue. This is an American issue that we should all care about. All fair-minded people should be concerned,” he said.

Obama spoke a day after the fatal shooting of a black man by the police in Minnesota. The incident was captured in a cell phone videos that quickly went viral and sparked renewed discussions about police brutality against African-Americans.

In another video-recorded killing incident, a black man was slayed after scuffled with two white police officers on the pavement outside a convenience store Louisiana on Tuesday.

Obama said these shootings were not just an issue of law enforcement, but were reflective of the values that the vast majority of law enforcement bring to the job. “If communities are mistrustful of the police, that makes those law enforcement officers who are doing a great job and are doing the right thing, it makes their lives harder,” he said.

“So when people say “Black Lives Matter,” that doesn’t mean blue lives don’t matter; it just means all lives matter, but right now the big concern is the fact that the data shows black folks are more vulnerable to these kinds of incidents,” he added.

Obama to travel to Dallas, cut European trip short: WH

US President Barack Obama will cut short a trip to Europe and travel to Dallas next week in the wake of the deadly ambush in Dallas that left five policeofficers dead, the White House has said. “The president has accepted an invitation from Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings to travel to Dallas early next week,” spokesman Josh Earnest said in a statement yesterday, adding that Obama would return to the United States tomorrow night — one day ahead of schedule.

Obama, who was in Warsaw this week attending a NATO summit, weighed in on the attacks from the Polish capital, calling the episode “vicious, calculated and despicable.”

Nawaz Sharif faces major test in PoK election

ISLAMABAD (TIP): The July 21 election in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir is one of the challenges PM Nawaz Sharif faces upon his return from London after undergoing a heart surgery.

The region has traditionally voted for federal governing parties, but Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is facing stiff competition from the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI).

The PPP’s aggressive election campaign has revolved around Sharif’s pro-India polices with ” Modi ka jo yaar hai, ghadhar hai, ghadhar hai (whoever is Modi’s friend is a traitor)” being its slogan.

“The election is very important for Pakistan because if the PML-N wins, then it would send out a message that Sharif’s policy of friendship with Narendra Modi has people’s support,” PPP chief Bilawal Bhuto Zardari said.

Some believe the PPP’s anti-India stance is aimed at getting closer to the powerful military establishment. Imran Khan-led PTI too is seen as a serious contender as many PPP and PML-N members have joined the party.

  • India continues to get more H-1B visas despite fee hike: Verma

India continues to get more H-1B visas despite fee hike: Verma

NEW YORK (TIP): India continues to get the “lion’s share” of the H-1B visas from the US government despite the fee hike, US Ambassador to India Richard Verma.

“India continues to receive the lion’s share of H-1B and L1 and even after the fee increase, they continue to get 70 per cent of those H-1B visas,” Verma said on the sidelines of ‘The Future is Now: From COP21 to Reality’ conference in New Delhi.

“We understand the concern about the fee hike. I think there is an ongoing conversation. We also know this is an important part of travel and commercial enterprise in the US. And again, there is an increase in the number of visas issued, in fact, there is a slight increase,” he added.

The US, under the 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, has imposed a special fee of USD 4,000 on certain categories of H-1B visas and USD 4,500 on L1 visas.

Almost all Indian IT companies would be paying between USD 8,000 and USD 10,000 per H-1B visa as per the hike. According to Nasscom, this is expected to have an impact of about USD 400 million annually on India’s technology sector.

Earlier in his speech, Verma said the ongoing deforestation and poor land management is responsible for nearly a quarter of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions as each day, greenhouse gases emitted by human activities trap the same amount of heat energy as would be released by 400,000 atomic bombs.

“Climate change is not just an environmental challenge; it is a national security issue. Changes in climate could potentially damage critical infrastructure, create shortages of food and water, and lead to mass migrations and disease outbreaks.

“Receding ice sheets in the Arctic and the opening of new sea passages raise concerns about maritime security and freedom of navigation,” he said. According to Verma, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 175 GW target for renewable energy deployments is among the most ambitious in the world and the US has done a great deal to support this effort.

Through the US-India Partnership to Advance Clean Energy, or PACE, nearly USD 2.5 billion have been mobilized for clean energy projects in India and another USD 1.4 billion in climate finance for solar projects was announced during the Prime Minister’s visit to the US.

“India’s success is critical to global success and I firmly believe, clean energy will be one of the biggest growth opportunities in the years ahead. Between now and 2035, investment in the global energy sector is expected to reach nearly USD 17 trillion. That’s more than the entire GDP of China and India combined,” Verma said.

The US is actively supporting India’s solar targets through the Government of India-led International Solar Alliance and bilateral initiatives, such as rooftop solar cooperation and solar resource mapping, he said.
