SAN JUAN SACATEPEQUEZ, GUATEMALA (TIP): The Embassy of India in Guatemala, in collaboration with the Municipality of San Juan Sacatepéquez, organized a special event on 7 August 2025 to celebrate National Handloom Day in San Juan Sacatepéquez. The celebration was attended by approximately 50 local weavers, along with businessmen, government authorities, and other key stakeholders from the region.
Recognizing the remarkable similarities between the Indian and Guatemalan handloom industries, the Embassy considered it both relevant and meaningful to involve local weavers in marking this important day. Much like in India, Guatemala’s handloom sector is a living emblem of the country’s rich and diverse cultural heritage and serves as a vital source of livelihood for many communities, especially in rural and semi-rural areas. The sector plays a crucial role in women’s empowerment, with the majority of weavers and allied artisans being women, thereby directly contributing to gender equality and social development. The event provided an ideal platform to connect Indian and Guatemalan weaving traditions, share knowledge about Indian handloom artistry, and explore opportunities for mutual learning and inspiration. It also served as a forum for engaging with local businessmen and government representatives to discuss the commercial potential of Indian handloom products in the Guatemalan market. The Municipality of San Juan Sacatepéquez played an instrumental role in bringing together all participants, ensuring a diverse and representative gathering of stakeholders. This collaboration not only celebrated a craft tradition but also fostered people-to-people connections and paved the way for future cooperation between artisans and entrepreneurs from both countries.

To further enrich the experience, promotional videos featuring messages in the voice of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi were screened, providing informative insights into the handloom sector’s achievements, challenges, and future vision. This was followed by the playing of recorded greetings from: Hon’ble Minister of Textiles, Shri Giriraj Singh, Hon’ble Minister of State for Textiles & External Affairs, Shri Pabitra Margherita, and Smt. Neelam Shami Rao, Secretary, Ministry of Textiles. In their messages, the dignitaries warmly greeted the participants, congratulated them on the occasion of National Handloom Day, and emphasized the importance of strengthening cross-cultural exchanges in the textile sector.
Shri Ramesh Khulbey, Head of Chancery at the Embassy of India, delivered an engaging and informative presentation that highlighted the diversity of Indian handloom products and the intricate weaving techniques that define this ancient craft. Through vivid visuals and detailed explanations, he showcased the fineness and uniqueness of various handloom textiles of various States in India, drawing attention to the meticulous craftsmanship involved in creating each piece. The presentation also emphasized India’s prominent role in the global handloom industry, underscoring how Indian handwoven textiles are appreciated worldwide for their quality, tradition, and artistry. Of particular interest to the audience was the demonstration of the striking similarities between Indian and Guatemalan handloom styles, which resonated deeply with the local weavers.
