Jeera water and methi water are among the most commonly recommended home remedies for weight loss in Indian households. Social media influencers, wellness enthusiasts, and even family members often suggest starting the day with one of these drinks to shed extra kilos and reduce belly fat.
As a result, many people have made them part of their morning routine, hoping for quick, visible results.
However, when it comes to weight loss, especially reducing fat around the abdomen, there is often confusion about what these drinks can realistically achieve. While both jeera and methi have nutritional benefits and may support certain aspects of health, neither should be viewed as a magic solution for weight loss. According to Dt. Deepali Sharma, Clinical Nutritionist at the CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, said the effectiveness of these drinks is often misunderstood.
“While both jeera water and methi water are popular morning drinks, neither directly burns belly fat. They can support digestion, appetite control, and overall health, but sustainable weight loss depends on a combination of healthy eating, regular exercise, good sleep, and stress management,” she explains.
Jeera water is prepared by soaking cumin seeds overnight or boiling them in water. It has long been used in traditional diets and is often associated with digestive health.
One reason many people prefer jeera water is its ability to reduce bloating and improve digestion. Poor digestion and water retention can sometimes make the stomach appear larger, leading people to believe they have gained fat. By supporting digestive processes, jeera water may help people feel lighter and less bloated.
Additionally, cumin contains antioxidants and plant compounds that may support metabolism. However, this does not mean it can specifically target or melt belly fat.
Methi water is made by soaking fenugreek seeds overnight and drinking the water the next morning. Fenugreek seeds are rich in soluble fibre, which absorbs water and forms a gel-like substance in the digestive tract.
This fibre content can help increase feelings of fullness and reduce hunger between meals. As a result, people may naturally consume fewer calories throughout the day.
“Methi may be particularly beneficial for managing blood sugar levels. Stable blood sugar levels can help reduce cravings and unnecessary snacking, which often contribute to weight gain,” says Dt Sharma.
For individuals struggling with frequent hunger or sugar cravings, methi water may offer an advantage by supporting better appetite control.
