Beyond the glow: What healthy skin really means

Perfectly smooth, clear and glowing skin has become one of the biggest beauty ideals of recent years. Popularly known as “glass skin,” the trend, inspired by Korean beauty routines, promises a complexion that appears luminous, hydrated and almost poreless. But is glass skin really the same as healthy skin? Not necessarily.
Glass skin is mainly an aesthetic goal. It focuses on achieving a glossy, smooth and radiant appearance through hydration and multiple skincare products. Healthy skin, however, is about much more than how it looks. It is skin with a strong protective barrier, balanced moisture and the ability to defend itself against pollution, sunlight and other environmental factors.
Real skin is not naturally flawless. It has pores, texture, fine lines and sometimes blemishes. These are completely normal. The pressure to achieve a picture-perfect complexion can often lead people to use too many products, exfoliate excessively or experiment with strong ingredients. Instead of improving the skin, this can damage its natural barrier and cause dryness, redness, irritation and breakouts.
The secret to healthy skin is not necessarily a complicated ten-step routine. A gentle cleanser, a suitable moisturiser and regular sun protection can form the foundation of effective skincare. Additional products should be chosen according to individual skin concerns rather than simply following beauty trends.
Lifestyle habits also matter. Adequate sleep, a balanced diet, hydration and stress management can influence the way the skin looks and feels.
The goal, therefore, should not be to achieve skin that looks like glass. Healthy skin can be dry, oily, textured or freckled and still be beautiful. Instead of chasing unrealistic perfection, focus on keeping your skin comfortable, balanced and well nourished.
After all, the most beautiful glow is not about being flawless-it is about having skin that is genuinely healthy and cared for.
