WASHINGTON, D.C. (TIP): Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO Virginia) organized its Signature event of Annual Award of Excellence Banquet at Marriott Suits in Herndon and celebrated its 17th Anniversary and 80th Independence Day of India. A grand successful event liked by everyone present and praised by all guests of Honor.
Chief Guest, Congressman Suhas Subramanyam, special guests, Virgina State Senators Saddam Azim Salim and Jennifer Wexton and Ambassador’s Representative Vinayak Patil led the houseful event.
Many dignitaries and community leaders graced the occasion with their presence. National Anthem of US and India were sung by Miss Virgina Jr. Aneria and Swati Sharma.
GOPIO Virgina President Jaisingh Bhandari extended a word of welcome and explained the role of GOPIO for the betterment of community and society. He mentioned that GOPIO’s mission is to Empower, Educate, and Enhance our community by fostering civic engagement, leadership, and active participation in society. Through education, advocacy, and community service, GOPIO Virginia strives to support the social, economic, and civic advancement of Indian Americans while strengthening our collective voice and impact. As proud members of the Indian American community, we all share a responsibility to contribute to the growth and success of our society. Your participation helps shape the future of GOPIO Virginia and creates opportunities for present and future generations to thrive and achieve the American Dream.
Indian Americans have played a significant role in strengthening the bonds between India and the United States, contributing to the economic, educational, social, cultural, and technological advancement of both nations.
Across diverse fields, people of Indian origin have distinguished themselves through innovation, leadership, and service, earning respect and recognition worldwide.
As we celebrate the 80th year of India’s Independence, we pay tribute to the vision, sacrifice, and unwavering courage of the freedom fighters who secured our nation’s freedom. This historic milestone reminds us of our rich heritage, democratic values, and collective responsibility to contribute positively to the communities and countries we call home. As Indian Americans, we take pride in India’s remarkable achievements and growing global leadership while continuing to strengthen the enduring bonds of friendship and cooperation between India and the United States. May this celebration inspire us to uphold the ideals of unity, service, excellence, and progress for generations to come.
Congressman Suhas Subramanyam thanked Jay Bhanari for organizing “a wonderful program”. Also, he extended his greetings on the occasion of the 80th Independence Day of India.
Congressman presented GOPIO Excellence Award to Dr. Shiva Subramaniam who received award in Education. Dr. Siva is emeritus professor in University of George Town and Hospital in Pediatrics, and obstetrics and Gynecology. He has published more than 100 articles. He is one of the founders of Siva Vishnu temple in Maryland.
Dr. Hiren Pokharana received Award in Medicine. He worked during Covid time on front lines tirelessly, putting his life at risk. He is Doctor of Infectious Disease.
Dr. Javed Hassan received award for Leadership in Technology and Business. He runs a Billion Dollars Company.
Dr. V. K. Raju Received the award in Philanthropy from Senator Saddam. He is the Founder and chairman of Eye Foundation of America. He also received award in Medicine in 2021. He is working for last 59 years to eliminate childhood blindness in Children. In last April, he was recognized at the House of Lords in London for his 49 years of dedicated service in removing childhood blindness.
Dr. C.M. Prasad received Award in Social Service. He has 35 years of experience as Psychiatrist, accomplished physician, and Addiction Specialist.
Mr. Lalit Jha and Vishnu Datta Jayraman both received awards in Journalism.
Senator Saddam and Jennnifer Boysko also spoke and thanked GOPIO Virginia for serving community and strengthening relations between India and America. A colorful cultural program was presented featuring the classical dances – Kathak and Kuchipudi-, and Bollywood songs and dances.
Congressman Suhas also inaugurated colorful Souvenir which was distributed among the audience. Mr. Bhandari introduced his colleagues – Vice President Johnson Myalil and Dr. Ram Gupta. Program ended with a vote of thanks followed by dinner.
