Strengthening India–Romania Cooperation in Timișoara

Meeting with Mr. Dominic Fritz, Mayor of Timișoara

BUCHAREST (TIP): During his visit to Timișoara, Ambassador of India to Romania and the Republic of Moldova, Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra, held a series of meetings with the city and county leadership, academic institutions and representatives of the business community, with a focus on further strengthening India-Romania cooperation at the regional and local levels.

The engagements highlighted the strong economic, industrial, technological and academic potential of Timișoara and Timiș County and their importance as major centers of innovation, investment and international business in western Romania. Discussions covered opportunities to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, manufacturing, technology, education, research, renewable energy and supply chains, while encouraging greater interaction between Indian companies, Romanian authorities, universities and local businesses.

Meeting with Mr. Alfred-Robert Simonis, President of the Timiș County

The Ambassador highlighted the important contribution of Indian companies operating in Timișoara and Timiș County to the local economy, employment and technological development, and encouraged further Indian business engagement with the region. The meetings also provided an opportunity to identify new avenues for institutional cooperation, academic exchanges, research partnerships and investment, contributing to the broader objective of expanding and diversifying India–Romania economic and people-to-people relations.

Meeting with the Mayor of Timișoara

The Ambassador met with the Mayor of Timișoara, Mr. Dominic Fritz, and discussed opportunities to further strengthen India–Romania cooperation in trade, investment and regional economic development. The discussions focused on Timișoara’s dynamic economic environment and its potential to attract further Indian investment and business partnerships. The Ambassador highlighted the valuable contribution of Indian companies, including Wipro, Tech Mahindra and Varroc Romania, to the city’s economy and local employment.

Ambassador met with Prof. Marilen Gabriel Pirtea, Rector of the West University of Timișoara

The meeting explored opportunities to build on the existing presence of Indian companies by encouraging greater engagement between Indian businesses and Timișoara’s business community, particularly in technology, manufacturing, services and innovation. The importance of strengthening direct links between Indian investors, local institutions and businesses was also emphasized, with a view to identifying new opportunities for investment and expanding economic cooperation.

Meeting with the President of the Timiș County Council

The Ambassador met with Mr. Alfred-Robert Simonis, President of the Timiș County Council, to discuss opportunities to further expand India-Romania economic cooperation at the regional level. Discussions focused on the strong industrial, economic and technological base of Timiș County and its potential to attract further Indian investment and develop new avenues for commercial cooperation. The Ambassador emphasized the importance of strengthening direct engagement between Indian businesses and regional authorities and encouraged the identification of opportunities for investment and partnerships in areas including manufacturing, technology, supply chains, renewable energy and infrastructure.

Ambassador met with Mr. Paul Finta, Prefect of Timiș County

The existing presence of leading Indian companies such as Wipro and Tech Mahindra, alongside Varroc Romania, was noted as an important foundation for further expanding India–Romania business relations in the region. Their contribution to the local economy, employment and technological development demonstrates the potential for deeper engagement by Indian companies in Timiș County.

The discussions also explored opportunities to connect Indian investors with local economic ecosystems, facilitate greater business-to-business engagement and encourage new investment partnerships. The Ambassador emphasized the importance of continued dialogue between Indian companies and regional authorities in identifying mutually beneficial areas of cooperation.

Meeting with the Prefect of Timiș County

The Ambassador met with Mr. Paul Finta, Prefect of Timiș County, to discuss opportunities to further strengthen India–Romania cooperation at the regional and local levels.

The discussions focused on Timiș County’s dynamic economic environment, strong industrial and business base, and potential to attract greater Indian investment and develop stronger institutional and commercial linkages.

The Ambassador highlighted the growing presence of Indian companies in the region and their contribution to the local economy and employment, as well as opportunities to further expand cooperation in manufacturing, technology, infrastructure, renewable energy, trade and supply chains. Views were exchanged on ways to facilitate greater engagement between Indian businesses, local authorities and the wider regional economic community, including through investment partnerships and business-to-business interactions.

The discussions also emphasized the importance of creating an enabling environment for foreign investment and strengthening dialogue between regional institutions and international business partners. The Ambassador encouraged continued engagement with local authorities and stakeholders to identify new avenues for investment, economic partnerships and institutional cooperation, while promoting greater people-to-people exchanges and contributing to the further deepening of India–Romania relations.

The visit reaffirmed the importance of Timișoara and Timiș County as important partners in India–Romania cooperation and underscored the potential for stronger regional-level engagement across economic, technological, educational and institutional domains.

Meeting with the Rector of the West University of Timișoara

The Ambassador met with Prof. Marilen Gabriel Pirtea, Rector of the West University of Timișoara and Honorary Adviser to the Prime Minister of Romania on Education and Research, to discuss opportunities to further advance India–Romania cooperation in higher education, research, innovation and academic exchanges.

The discussions focused on strengthening institutional partnerships between Indian and Romanian universities and research institutions, promoting greater academic mobility and exchanges, and exploring opportunities for joint initiatives in research and innovation. Particular attention was given to cooperation in emerging areas of technology and research and to creating new opportunities for students, academics and researchers from both countries.

Ambassador’s meeting with the Tech Mahindra team in Timișoara

The Ambassador highlighted the important role of higher education institutions in fostering long-term people-to-people connections and contributing to a broader and more dynamic India–Romania partnership. He also emphasized the potential of universities to serve as platforms linking education, research, technology and innovation with wider economic and institutional engagement.

Prof. Pirtea, who also serves as Vice-President of the National Council of Rectors of Romania, invited the Ambassador to participate in the Council’s meeting in Sibiu in October, dedicated to strengthening India–Romania cooperation in education and research. The forthcoming meeting will provide an additional opportunity to continue institutional dialogue and explore new avenues of cooperation between Indian and Romanian higher education and research institutions.

Ambassador’s interactions with senior executives of Indian companies

The Ambassador visited Tech Mahindra, Wipro and Varroc in Timișoara, three leading Indian companies that have established a significant presence in the municipality and contributed to the creation of thousands of jobs. The visits highlighted the growing contribution of Indian companies to Timișoara’s technology, engineering and manufacturing ecosystem, as well as their role in strengthening economic and people-to-people links between India and Romania. Discussions covered opportunities for further investment, technology and skills development, innovation and stronger partnerships with local businesses, universities and other institutions.
