Air India to start Delhi-DC non-stop flight from July

NEW YORK (TIP): Come July, Washington’s Dulles International airport will become Air India’s fifth U.S. destination, joining Chicago O’Hare, New York JFK, Newark Liberty and San Francisco. Air India would be the only carrier offering nonstop service to India from Washington.

The service would begin in July, with India’s state-owned national carrier planning nonstop service from Delhi. The capital-to-capital route is expected to operate three times a week on Boeing 777 aircraft, The Times of India reports.

On 22 August, last year, Air India commenced the first ever flight between Ahmedabad to Newark via London.

In October Air India set a record with its flight from Delhi to San Francisco. Instead of traveling West over the Atlantic, it flew East over the Pacific on an over 15,000-kilometre, 14-and-a-half-hour journey.

Air India has grown to become a mega international airline with a network of 34 destinations across the USA, Europe, Australia, Far-East and South-East Asia and the Gulf. The airline’s domestic network covers 52 destinations, including far-flung areas of the North-East, Ladakh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Air India, today, flies one of the youngest, state-of-the-art, fleet of aircraft comprising a mix of the wide-body Boeing B777s, B747s, its latest acquisition- the B787 Dreamliner and the narrow body Airbus A321s, A320s and A319 aircraft.

UNITED NATIONS (TIP): Over 20 countries, including two UN Security Council permanent members- France and the UK– have supported a dedication ceremony hosted by India to commemorate the release of a Diwali postage stamp by the US.

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Syed Akbaruddin said at the event, December 5, that the Diwali Forever Stamp is a “shining tribute to the celebration of multi-culturalism”. Noting that Diwali was commemorated for the first time this year at the United Nations, Mr Akbaruddin said the celebration of Diwali at the world body is a reaffirmation of the foundational objectives of the UN Charter and its purposes and principles, which stand as a force for universal good.

“Though celebrated by different communities for different reasons, the essence of the (Diwali) celebration is the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness. Philosophically, the fight is not only external but also within oneself,” he said.

The event lauded the efforts of Ranju Batra, Chair of the Diwali stamp project who spearheaded efforts for years to get the commemorative stamp issued, reaching out to the Indian-American community members and influential lawmakers, garnering support for the stamp.

Ranju Batra, Chair of the Diwali stamp project who spearheaded efforts for 7 years to get the commemorative stamp issued said: "Today's celebration is not of a religion or of a nation but it is of the spirit of harmonious inclusiveness and cultural understanding that all religions deserve."

“The tens of thousands of paper petitions (for the Diwali stamp) were signed not only by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists but also by Christians, Jews, Muslims and every other faith and culture,” Ms Batra said, expressing gratitude for the support she got in her journey to get the stamp issued.

Capping seven-year long efforts by the Indian-American community and influential US lawmakers, the US Postal Service (USPS) had issued the commemorative Diwali stamp to mark the festival of lights.

Over 170,000 Diwali stamps have been sold, making history by becoming the number one best-selling stamp in USPS history.

“Today’s celebration is not of a religion or of a nation but it is of the spirit of harmonious inclusiveness and cultural understanding that all religions deserve,” she said.

Earlier, 20 nations had come together to support a special stamp dedication ceremony co-hosted by the Permanent Missions of India and Belarus.

Eminent Indian-American attorney Ravi Batra said the event has being supported and celebrated by 23 nations, of which “12 are Christian, one Jewish, six Muslim… 23 nations spread across the world are celebrating not only the Diwali stamp but celebrating hope itself”.

The 23 nations that supported the event include Armenia, Austria, Cyprus, France, Georgia, Honduras, Kuwait, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, Ukraine, the UK and Vietnam.

The Diwali Forever Stamp was formally launched by the USPS on October 5 at the Indian Consulate, New York in the presence of a large number of Indian Americans, some, like Shiv Dass from New York and Sante Chary from Dallas, TX who had initiated efforts long ago to have the Diwali stamp issued. Another person who made an effort at getting the Diwali stamp issued but failed for lack of political support for the project, the Indiaspora founder MR Rangaswami flew in from California to see his one time dream being realized, albeit by someone else.

Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney who played a pivotal role in having the stamp issued, as also Congresswoman Grace Meng who had co-sponsored the House Resolution with Carolyn Maloney were present. Ravi and Ranju Batra praised Congresswoman profusely for her support. It was said again and again that Diwali stamp could not have been issued without the strong political support provided by lawmakers, led by Carolyn Maloney.

Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney’s absence from the UN event was rather intriguing. More intriguing was absence of any reference to her contribution in getting the Diwali Stamp issued. Reminds me of Shakespeare.

    “But ’tis a common proof

That lowliness is young ambition’s ladder,

Whereto the climber upward turns his face.

But when he once attains the upmost round,

He then unto the ladder turns his back,

Looks in the clouds, scorning the base degrees

    By which he did ascend.”

NEW YORK CITY (TIP): Almost a decade long struggles to have a US postal stamp to commemorate the best known Indian festival bore fruit in August when the USPS conveyed to Ranju Batra, Chair of the Diwali Stamp Project that a Forever stamp will be issued to commemorate Diwali. The unveiling of the commemorative stamp was fixed for October 5.

The USPS decision received the expected welcome from those who had been working to have it issued, and the community. On August 23, Ranju Batra, Chair of the Diwali Stamp Project and Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney who had moved tin the Congress the bill for the Diwali Stamp, invited members of the community to formally announce that the USPS had agreed to release a Diwali commemorative stamp.

And now the Consulate General of India, New York, in association with the United States Postal Service (USPS) and the Indian community is hosting the inaugural ceremony of Diwali Stamp release around noon on October 5 at its premises (3 East 64 Street, New York). Following the ceremony, purchase and cancellation of the stamps for collectors and customers will be facilitated at the Consulate. This was announced by Ranju Batra, in the presence of the Consul General Riva Ganguly Das, at a press conference at the Consulate, September 21.

Speaking on the occasion, Raju Batra described the efforts which went in to realizing her cherished dream of having a Diwali stamp issued. She said, many before her had tried and failed. But she was resolved to go all the way and rest not till the stamp was issued. She ascribed success in her effort to many who lent their support to her mission. Beginning with the encouragement and support she got from her husband, Ravi Batra, she went on to describe how Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney proved to be the chief catalyst. She named a couple of other politicians and some community leaders who, she said, were a great support. She thanked them all.

In her address to the gathered media, Consul General Das said the release of the Diwali Stamp was a recognition of the contribution and the strength of the Indian American community. She said she was happy and proud at the achievement made possible with the concerted effort of the community and under the leadership provided by Ranju and Ravi Batra.

The Regional Manager of Air India Vandana Sharma who could not make it to the press conference on account of an injury was represented by the District Manager, Sales Mohan Kothekar who read out Ms Sharma’s message. A part of the message dealt with the Air India’s offer to give 10 tickets for free travel to India to buyers of the Diwali stamp through a raffle draw on October 5 at the Consulate.

Commodore (Retired) Rajeev Sharma was also present at the event.

Air India is sponsoring 10 free round trip tickets to India to drive up the Diwali stamp sales at the launch. “Every person who comes to the Oct 5 dedication and buys even 1 set of 20 stamps or buys by pre-order will have a chance to win 1 round trip ticket to India! In addition, those who buy multiples of 10 sheets of stamps will get one chance per 10 Sheets; the more sheets you buy, more chances you get,” informed Ranju Batra. In addition, anyone who buys $10,000 or more worth of Diwali stamps by Pre-Sale will get 1 round trip ticket (limited to first 7 free India tickets).

Around the time of the dedication ceremony attended by high officials from United States Postal Services (USPS), Diwali Stamp sales and Pre-Sale Orders Pick Up will begin. Winners of the free Air India roundtrip tickets will be selected and announced on the same day.

It may have taken over 200 years, the end of the Cold War and the Civil Nuclear Deal, but the Forever Diwali Stamp represents nothing short of respectful inclusive indivisibility: E Pluribus Unum -within America and between two sovereigns. Air India announced that it will be increasing its non-stop service between San Francisco and Delhi – India’s Capital – from three to six flights a week, starting November 21, 2016.

The Boeing 777-200LR flights will depart every day except Tuesday. The flying time is 16 hours and 15 minutes – a full 3½ hours faster than any other airline.

The non-stop flights depart San Francisco at 10:30 AM and arrive in Delhi at 4:15 PM the next day. Departures from Delhi are at 2:35 AM, and the arrival time in San Francisco is 6:00 AM the same day.

“Fueled by the significantly shorter flying time, our non-stop San Francisco-Delhi service was an immediate success when it launched last December,” said Ms. Vandana Sharma, Air India’s Regional Manager-Americas.

“The three additional weekly fights are a response to the steadily increasing popularity of the service among the Indo-American communities on the west coast, and the convenience of our seamless connecting service to all the other major cities across India, many with customs and immigration formalities at the final destination.”

BANKERS UNHAPPY WITH MALLYA’S ‘SWEETENER’ DEAL OF RS 4,000 CRORE

MUMBAI (TIP): Embattled liquor baron Vijay Mallya’s proposed ‘sweetener’ deal of Rs 4,000 crore has not gone down well with bankers.

Mallya offered on Wednesday to repay more than half of the Rs 7,000 crore his now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines (KFA) owes creditors. Mallya’s lawyers told the Supreme Court he is ready to pay by September Rs 4,000 crore of the Rs 6,903 crore taken as loans by KFA. However, together with interest and other dues, the loan amount comes to around Rs 9,000 crore.

The court has asked banks to respond within a week to Mallya’s proposal.

“He (Mallya) has just said it but there is no concrete plan on how will we see the actual money,” said a public sector bank official.

“To consider the settlement offer, there are certain guidelines on one-time settlement that have been laid out and we need to follow the due procedure,” a senior SBI executive said. “There are rules that we have to follow with regard to the principal loan amount, interest, value of the property, value of the assets, securities, discounted value of cash flows, etc…which is a complex calculation that needs to be done. Only then we can come to a conclusion.”

“It has just been proposed yet…Let us see what the offering has to say. We are dealing with public money so we cannot just settle or take a haircut. It’s too primitive to say anything currently, ” another senior public sector bank executive said.

A former SBI official who was involved in dealing with the KFA loan account said Mallya’s offer “will not be acceptable because banks will have to write-off about Rs 3,000 crore plus some interest.”

“Out of the Rs 4,000 crore that he is offering, about half of it is already with the courts. About Rs 600 crore in the form of properties is lying with the courts and another Rs 1,300-1,400 crore worth of shares are attached, which is very liquid. I doubt banks will accept it,” he added.

Lenders can also attach Mallya’s personal assets since he has given a personal guarantee on the loans. However, since a large number of assets are abroad, it would be difficult to attach them, bankers said.

“Going by the reports, if you take Rs 7,000 crore as loan dues and what has been recovered, it needs to be seen how much the banks are willing to write-off,” said an executive of a company, which specialises in restructuring and turnaround of stressed firms.

Mallya’s luxury Airbus A319 being auctioned to recover dues

The service tax department is set to auction defunct Kingfisher Airlines chairman Vijay Mallya’s luxury Airbus A319 to recover part of dues of over Rs 800 crore. The department hopes to raise Rs 150 crore from the auction. Over a dozen monogrammed towels and napkins bearing the initials of Vijay Mallya, a copy of Ambani & Sons by Hamish McDonald and DVDs of over 100 films curated by Mallya himself will be sold along with the aircraft on May 12.

The service tax department, which seized the Airbus A319 in December 2013, has appointed Air India as technical consultant for sale of the aircraft. Air India has also been entrusted the task of cleaning the aircraft before potential buyers begin physical inspection.

Ambassador Syed Akbaruddin, Permanent Representative of India at UN and a contemporary of Mulay in the Indian Foreign Services, recalled his early days when Mulay was known as a poet among his batch mates. “A literary person at heart Mulay emerged as a fine diplomat fulfilling his duties, which are like writing hard prose not poetries.”

Ambassador Akbaruddin recalled that Mulay had skillfully handled delicate issues during the political turmoil in Maldives where he was serving as the High Commissioner of India before coming to New York. His diplomatic skills were put to test in New York when India-US relations reached new lows in the event of the arrest of Devyani Khobragade, the then Deputy Consul General.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Navin Mehta, a former Chairman of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan who has known Mr. Mulay well for some years now said, “Mulay successfully implemented a policy of ‘bringing the consular services to our doorsteps’” said community leader Dr. Navin Mehta, “We are going to miss his down-to-earth approach in connecting with all sections of Indian Americans.”

Prof. Indrajit S Saluja described Mr. Mulay as a man endowed with the best of qualities of head and heart

Prof. Indrajit Saluja, Chief Editor of The Indian Panorama wondered how one man could have so many diverse qualities of head and heart and commented that God must have created Mr. Mulay with some special stuff. Turning to Mr. Mulay, he said, “you are leaving a rich legacy behind. You will always be remembered for the great work you have done here as Consul General and also for being a perfect gentleman”.

A plaque was presented to Mr. Mulay by Attorney Anand Ahuja on behalf of GOPIO.

Two days later, on February 16, the Indian American community organizeda farewellevent at Royal Albert’s Palace in Fords, New Jersey. Known for his literary talents the community recognized him as an officer who transformed the way passports and visa applications were handled under his watch.

Those who acknowledged Mulay’s contribution as a ‘man of action’, included Ramesh Patel, Chairman, Federation of Indian Association, H. R. Shah, Chairman, TV Asia, Dr. Navin Mehta, Trustee, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and Dr. Sudhir Parikh, Chairman, Parikh Worldwide Media, all of who said that the consulate staff was more efficient than ever. Mulay on his part disclosed his style of functioning as that of a leader who cared for his subordinates. He pointed out that his staff needed a new vision in order to become more productive. “On the first day of my work, I called a few of my staff and asked them to give their opinion about a painting hanging on the wall. All of them said there was nothing wrong with the painting. Then I turned the painting upside down and asked them what they thought of it. All of them pointed out that the painting looked much better than before.”

Mulay narrated the above incident to bring home the point that it was possible to improve things without making a worker feel guilty. “I applauded my staff and showed them a different way to be more productive. A marked improvement in the functioning of the consulate was visible soon”, he said.

Issuing timely visas and processing applications for new passports are the most important responsibilities carried out by consulates. Any pitfall in discharging such duties is bound to bring bad reputation for the office of the Consul General. Mulay realized this fact and quickly implemented an ambitious plan to expedite applications for visa, OCI and OPI. He was promptly assisted by Dr. Manoj Kumar Mahaptra, whose youthful attitude sparked new energy among the consular staff.

“We are proud to say that we process all applications within a day or two”, said Mulay in his speech at the farewell function. His vision was to project the New India House, the consulate premises, into a center for cultural and intellectual activities. “We held more than 200 events in a year”, he said adding that his office aimed at encouraging all sections of the community within its resources.

The monthly lecture series launched by Mulay on various current topics in art, literature, journalism and judiciary were well appreciated in the cultural circle of New York. The consulate hosted high-ranking officials

from the State Department such as Nisha Desai Biswal,Assistant Secretary, Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs and high profile New Yorker such as Salman Rushdie.

Mulay is returning to New Delhi, where he will be responsible for the Affairs of Overseas Indians. “I hope to continue working with you”; he proclaimed demonstrating his deep interest in contributing for the progress of India with the help of Indian Americans. For the past year he initiated outreach initiatives to connect with people of Indian origin in various states of USA, which fall under his jurisdiction. He established good working relations with a number of officials including the Governor of Massachusetts Charlie Baker who sent a proclamation for Mulay.

The farewell event was hosted by a host of community organizations including FIA, GOPIO, AAPI, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, and others. A plaque was presented to Mulay on behalf of FIA. Andy Bhatia, a former Air India official conducted the event.

  • Air India Kanishka Bombing Convict Inderjit Singh Reyat Released from Prison

Air India Kanishka Bombing Convict Inderjit Singh Reyat Released from Prison

TORONTO (TIP): The only person ever convicted over the 1985 Air India bombings that killed 331 people was released from a Canadian prison on Wednesday, January 27 after serving two decades behind bars.

Inderjit Singh Reyat, a Sikh immigrant, served two-thirds of a nine-year sentence for perjury in one of the deadliest airline attacks in history, said a spokesman for the Parole Board of Canada, confirming his release.

Mr. Reyat — convicted of lying in court to cover for his co-accused — previously served more than 15 years in prison for making the bombs that were stuffed into two suitcases and planted on planes leaving Vancouver.

One bomb tore apart Air India Flight 182 as it neared the coast of Ireland, killing all 329 people aboard. The second exploded at Japan’s Narita airport, killing two baggage handlers as they transferred cargo to another Air India plane.

The near-simultaneous bombings on opposite sides of the world was in retaliation to Operation Blue Star – the army action to flush out militants from the Golden Temple in Amritsar in 1984.

Mr. Reyat was working as a mechanic in westernmost Canada and had purchased the dynamite, batteries and detonators used to construct the bombs.

The person who later checked the baggage containing the explosive devices at the Vancouver airport never boarded the jetliners.

Bal Gupta, who lost his wife in the attacks, said he would never be able to forgive those responsible.

“We have learned to live our lives slowly, but a thing like this, the wounds are deep,” he told public broadcaster CBC. “It’s not only me,” he said, recounting the lives lost of 86 children under the age of 12 and the 29 families that were “completely wiped out”.

“If I had to face him (Reyat), I would tell him that if you have any shred of humanity in you, come forward and tell the name of the conspirators that worked with you… and be honest so that the criminals can face their time and justice will be done,” he said.

In 2010, Mr. Reyat was convicted of lying while testifying in the mass murder trial of alleged co-conspirators Ripudaman Singh Malik and Ajaib Singh Bagri, who were later acquitted for a lack of evidence.

He had avoided being tried alongside the pair by pleading guilty to lesser manslaughter charges, and was called to testify about the plot.

Prosecutors say the verdict in the trial of Malik and Bagri would have been different if Mr. Reyat had told the truth on the stand instead of protecting his alleged co-conspirators, while Judge Ian Josephson called him “an unmitigated liar.”

His nine-year perjury sentence was the longest ever handed down by a Canadian court.

Mr. Reyat has been ordered to live at a halfway house until August 2018, when his perjury sentence will expire, and abide by several strict conditions set by the parole board, including having no contact with victims’ families or alleged co-conspirators, and no political activities. He must also have counseling to address violent tendencies, a lack of empathy and “cognitive distortions” — or what one official described as his exaggerated beliefs.

A 2013 psychologist’s report found that Mr. Reyat lacks “true empathy and remorse” for the bombing victims, and he has only recently accepted a small measure of responsibility for his crimes.

“If at any time his parole officer feels there’s a risk to the community he can return Mr. Reyat to prison,” parole board spokesman Patrick Storey told AFP.

Canadian federal police continue to investigate the bombings, 30 years on.

Air India technician gets ‘sucked into aircraft engine’, Dies

Mumbai (TIP): Ravi Subramanian, an Air India technician, died on Wednesday, December 16, after he was sucked into the engine of a parked plane at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.

The accident happened as the jet of flight AI 619 from Mumbai to Hyderabad was being pushed back for departure. Subramanian got pulled into the engine and died instantly. Airport sources say his body is severely mutilated.

Air India chairman Ashwani Lohani described the accident as a “mishap”, but it is not yet clear what happened.

“We are deeply saddened and regret the tragic incident,” Mr Lohani said. He added that the incident is being investigated.

The Times of India, quoting Air India sources, reported that the accident occurred when the co-pilot started the engine at the Chhatrapati Shivaji airport.

“No one knew what happened. All of a sudden we heard that the technician has been sucked into the engine,” the newspaper quoted an airline source as saying.

An Air India official told The Hindustan Times they were “absolutely clueless on how this person was near the aircraft”.

“Only an inquiry can establish whose negligence it was and whether the engine should have been switched on at that time,” an airline official said.

The Indian Express reported that the victim was “near the nose wheel” with the tow van “when the engine started and he was sucked in”.

Mr Lohani has expressed his condolences to the family.

The state-owned national airline, which is battling huge debts and not reported a profit since 2007, has been often hit by technical glitches, delays and crew turning up late for flights.

In April, Air India removed two pilots from duty after they reportedly fought inside the cockpit just before takeoff from Delhi.

In 2009, pilots and cabin crew came to blows on an Air India flight from the United Arab Emirates to Delhi, with 106 passengers and seven crew on board.

The passengers applauded when the aircraft touched the ground.

A number of officials from India and the US, which included the Consul General of India Venkatesan Ashok attended the ribbon cutting ceremony in New Delhi to mark the beginning of the services.

PTI quoted Ashok saying, “It is a remarkable day and today is a great day for Air India”.

Marking the maiden landing of a non-stop aircraft from India, the San Francisco city mayor Ed Lee declared this day as ‘Air India Day’.

With the non-stop flight shuttling between San Francisco and New Delhi, Air India has become the first Airliner to offer a direct connection to West Coast.

  • CCI slaps Rs 258-cr penalty on Jet Airways, IndiGo, SpiceJet

CCI slaps Rs 258-cr penalty on Jet Airways, IndiGo, SpiceJet

MUMBAI (TIP): Fair trade regulator Competition Commission of India (CCI) has imposed a penalty of Rs 258 crore on Jet Airways, IndiGo and SpiceJet for indulging in anti-competitive practices while fixing fuel surcharge (FSC).

Of this amount, Rs 151.69 crore was imposed on Jet Airways, Rs 63.74 crore on InterGlobe Aviation, which operates IndiGo, and Rs 42.48 crore on SpiceJet.

However, the CCI did not impose any penalty on Air India and Go Airlines, which were also named in a complaint filed by the Express Industry Council of India (EICI), an apex body of express companies.

The regulator said the penalty was not imposed on Air India “as its conduct was not found to be parallel with other airlines.”

Go Airlines, which was also named in a complaint, was spared as it gave its cargo belly space to third-party vendors.

According to a statement issued by the CCI, the commission while imposing penalties noted that such conduct in the air cargo industry undermines economic development of the country and ultimately acts to the detriment of end consumers.

“We had filed a complaint before the CCI against cartelisation of airlines by using fuel surcharge as a tool,” said Vijay Kumar, COO, EICI.

“What had happened was when oil prices were very volatile, the airlines had introduced fuel surcharge, which by itself was not an issue. The issue is when you use that fuel surcharge as a tool for ensuring that the prices go up in tandem. When the fuel rates were going down, even then the fuel surcharges were going up,” said Kumar, adding that it was clear that the airlines were using fuel surcharge as a tool to rig the market.

A SpiceJet spokesperson said that the company was likely to challenge the order.

“Jet is not in contravention of the provisions of the Competition Act and shall pursue all available legal steps to defend it’s position,” a Jet spokesperson said.

Air India eyes Rs 17,000 crore revenue

NEW DELHI (TIP): Air India is all set to earn its highest-ever passenger revenue — Rs 17,000 crore — this fiscal, bettering the previous high of Rs 15,500 crore registered in FY 14-15. The airline’s total revenue is expected to be Rs 21,500 crore this fiscal.

“While the revenues are up due to higher passenger loads, costs are down because of oil prices and softening of interest rates on working capital loans of Rs 22,000 crore by almost 1 percentage point. As a result, we are looking at halving our net loss to Rs 2,500 crore this fiscal from Rs 5,500 crore last fiscal,” said a senior AI official.

AI is now looking at new revenue streams to shore up its finances. It is now going to train Airbus A-320 pilots for other Indian carriers in India. At present, other airlines using the A-320 send their pilots abroad for type-rating (certificate that a pilot is trained on a particular type of aircraft). IndiGo — the biggest user of A-320 in India — sends its pilots to Kuala Lumpur for type-rating.

  • Time to de-recognize non-democratic not-for-profits

    Time to de-recognize non-democratic not-for-profits

The India Day Parades in celebration of India’s Independence in New York and New Jersey are left behind and the season ahead will witness various Dessert and Diwali celebrations. Most of these events are organized by not-for-profits, with the funds coming in from the public and the corporate world which includes the government of India undertakings.

Government of India undertakings support the Indian events ostensibly out of their desire to strengthen the organizations of NRIs engaged in preservation and promotion of Indian cultural values. Otherwise, they probably are not obliged in any way to part with the money of the public.

However, at the end of the day, it is found that many of these organizations are not truly representative of the public at large. These are either individual centric, or at the best coterie centric. Take the case of Federation of Indian Associations, NY/NJ/CT. It claims to be the largest umbrella organization of Indian Associations. But the FIA has never made public the list of the associations which are the members of the FIA. Look at the people who run the FIA. It is a small coterie of fewer than twenty persons of a closely knit group, belonging to one region of India, professing mostly one faith, and possibly one political ideology, and   owing allegiance to one man.

The coterie which runs the FIA is being fed on the money of the people of India which comes to them through Air India, Tourism department of government of India, and the government owned banks. It is estimated that together government of India enterprises and departments pay close to $200,000 towards organizing the India Day Parade in New York City. According to the Income Tax Return of 2012 (from 3-1-12 to 2-28-13), FIA claimed to have a total revenue of $332,220.00, with the expenditure of $316,772.00. It is for GOI “outlets” to weigh their contribution in supporting the coterie.

It is time people told the coterie to make FIA a democratic body, with representation to NRIs from all parts of India and from all faiths. If the coterie fails to do so in the coming months, let the democratic government of India withdraw its support to FIA. Let the Consulate here not recognize the FIA. Let the government of India departments and enterprises withdraw their support to FIA, for the sake of democracy and equality.

We will, in time, come up with more examples of undemocratic not-for-profit organizations and prick the conscience of those managing them, to democratize and be truly representative of the NRIs.

Air India Express commences direct services between Varanasi and Sharjah from 17th August, 2015.

NEW YORK (TIP): In a statement to The Indian Panorama, Air India Regional Manager for Americas, Rishi Kant Singh said that Air India launched direct flights between Varanasi and Sharjah on August 17. This will provide a safe and convenient flight link and aid the development of the adjoining districts of Varanasi which are largely agricultural, he said.

Varanasi as is widely known is the oldest continually inhabited city in the world with lot of history of its own. It is home to Kashi Vishwanath temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, and the well known banks of river Ganges where thousands perform rituals on a daily basis. Varanasi is well linked on the Buddhist circuit starting with Sarnath where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon after achieving enlightenment. His Holiness The Dalai Lama is fond of Sarnath and meets his disciples and followers when in residence.

The adjoining district of Ghazipur is the final resting place of Lord Cornwallis, then Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of British India in serene environs.

At short distance from Varanasi is the city of Allahabad, known for  educational institutions and contribution to lawmakers, administrators and judiciary. Prayag is a holy site with confluence of Yamuna, Ganga and Sarawati. Prayag sees the largest congregation of people in the Kumbh mela which is visible from space.

All these and more make Varanasi an important destination by itself. We hope the increased connectivity will provide residents of United Arab Emirates and other destinations to connect over Sharjah and Dubai to Varanasi.

NEW DELHI (TIP): Security agencies have warned about a possible 26/11 style influx of terrorists from the sea and an attack on BJP offices, asking the forces to remain alert on the occasion of Independence Day to thwart any such attempt.

The Home Ministry has also cautioned that the terrorists might use the air route to strike using a para gliders to attack and has asked the security forces to remain vigilant against any such attempt to sabotage, especially targeting high risk dignitaries.

The advisory said that recent terror attack in Gurdaspur, several terror incidents in the past including serial blasts in Patna in 2013 targeting election rally of Narendra Modi indicated that threat emanates from Pakistan based terrorist groups and their Indian affiliates like the Indian Mujahideen and members of ex-SIMI to possible targets like

Lotus Temple, Malls in Noida, Metro Stations, Red Fort and Political Personalities.

In a communication to all the forces and state police the Ministry has cited an April 16 input suggesting that Al Qaeda in the Indian Sub-Continent (AQIS) was actively engaged in planning attack against India at Indian Naval facilities and other unsecured waterfronts as potential target.

“In this regard the Southern Naval Command in Kochi (INS Venduruthy), Western Naval Command in Mumbai and the Naval base in Karwar (INS Kadamba) could be targeted,” it said adding that Gujarat may also be targeted.

The communication said an input received in September last year claims that AQIS has been planning to target BJP offices, commercial, tourist, religious, aviation and railway infrastructure in various states.

“To counter threat from remote pilotless vehicles, remote controlled aircraft, para gliders and hang gliders, open grounds and spaces, abandoned air strips etc allowing lift off or launching pads for these flying objects need to be identified and suitably secured by patrolling and deploying of security forces.

“Checks of flying/gliding clubs may be carried out to rule out use of aero modules by hostile elements,” it said . According to another uncorroborated input the ISI has “plan to hijack/explode Air India flights operating in Kabul-Delhi sector as they are being used by senior Indian officials.”
