  • It is Time to Go Back, Only to Move Forward in Time

It is Time to Go Back, Only to Move Forward in Time

CHICAGO, IL (TIP): Prayagraj Hule is a renowned Vedantic Scholar. He recently concluded a 5-day series on self-help at the International University of Vedic Wellness in Streamwood, IL. His talks resonated with people across Chicago land, leaving a profound impact on the youth and individuals of diverse backgrounds. This universal message transcended race and religion, offering knowledge that spoke to the shared human experience.

In collaboration with the University, Prayagraj will offer youth and adult retreats in 2024 as well as online sessions throughout the year. For more information contact Aparna Kulkarni 847-306-7616 or AparnaK@umasinc.com.

    Unearthing Human Nature
Vedanta is a science which deals with human beings. An encyclopedia which has the compilation of subtlest thoughts related to human relationship with the Transcendental Self. Rendered by several enlightened sages of India. These great people dedicated their lives thousands of years ago to reflect upon the mystery of human origin, purpose of living and constitution of human inner nature. The effort of such crystalline contemplation culminated in the Vedanta philosophy, which decoded the apogee of happiness. Present day humans are disconnected with their roots and live in ignorance about this state of Bliss.

    The Labyrinth
Today, the world over alma maters and mushrooming educational institutions are priming students with a lot of data. No doubt valuable to earn wealth and mark the material progress of nations. But limit the young in their rational approach and application of the knowledge provided. Very few truly implement the knowledge gained. The rest just follow a beaten pattern to work. Consequently, the young become victims of contemporaneity pressure. Affliction is arising out of work culture and impending personal perils caused by lack in clarity of balancing their work and professional life.

The Unrestrained Mind, the Ignorance of Intellect
The youth are unaware of Vedantic education. People hence find themselves tormented by the pernicious traits of an ungoverned mind. The lack of higher values absent in present day education has made humans weak. They find challenges in life difficult to handle, mostly, amongst well-educated and the rich. Depression and stress related ailments have risen to alarming proportions. Divorce has reached record breaking numbers world-wide. The human mind turns malignant when left unattended to make decisions by itself in absence of intellect. As a result, greed has led to decadence in society. Humans have turned greedy to amass ill gained wealth and devour millions, billions, without paying any heed to others living juxtaposed in denial. Ultimately, the greedy only find themselves isolated and lonely.

    The Problem Lies Elsewhere
Knowledge gained from universities has no doubt raised the standard of human living, made people wealthy and indulgent. But are they happy? By their own admission people have lost their morals, peace and cheer. Standard of life has deteriorated to a substantial level.

The lack of Vedantic knowledge also makes it difficult for individuals to unravel one’s true aptitude. As a result, few flourish in their natural field of work. Others experience work as a burden, instead of finding it a source of pleasure and joy. Vedanta brings in clarity to discover one’s aptitude and subsequently identify a suitable field of work. One then finds success by employing the right technique of action guided by the intellect. When work becomes a pleasure, so does the working environment.

    Live to Give
Giving should be preceded by thinking. Take a look at the charity structure in the world. Ideally, it should be the confluence of feeling and thinking to give society punctiliously. A true philanthropist will initiate research if wealth gives charity and has resolved a whirlwind of present predicaments. Corporation’s today have started charity enclaves, urged by the government to be socially responsible. But has this changed the mind-set of people? Seldom has the donor looked into the effect and effort of organizations and hence the persisting quandaries in the world still remain recurring. Genuine philanthropists share their wealth. But most charitable entities are unable to reach the bottom of the problem. Applying balm to a wound is calming. But that will not help in getting to the source of the disease. True charity is supposed to lift a person spiritually. Make one independent to progress along with others. Not make them dependent and selfish, lethargic and diseased. Remember, “Candent living brings forth Prudent giving”.

    The Time is Ticking
Few care about Vedantic intellectual education. An education is beyond the precincts of secular education provided by schools and universities. The educated should mull over the recent graph of wars, poverty, crimes, rapes, stress, divorces… These unfortunate escalations of events have gripped all families in the world. Even children are not spared, as crime perpetrated on children is on the rise.

Pressure on children has led them not to cooperate with parents and educators. Eager to leave homes, the moment they reach the periphery of youth. Therefore, the necessity of bringing in a value system alongside secular education in society should be implemented imminently. The good and spiritual side of human’s has to be tapped. The negative will then slowly diminish. Vedanta impacts an individual to harness one’s mind. By imbibing its knowledge, you gain intellectual clarity. This then creates collectively awakened human beings to be more affable and reaching out. There is a saying: “You cannot reach God unless you serve & love the expressions of God”.

    For the Youth
The future of every country is the power of youth. Parents must pause for a moment and look behind at the legacy they leave, Asian families in recent times a tradition of debts. Westerners, a tradition of separation is in relationships, angst in their behavioral habits and pills to pop anxiety. This directly affects every child.

The youth get influenced by anyone higher in stature. They want to emulate everything their icons do. It is hereby the responsibility of all leaders to leave trails of culture and wisdom that follows sound intellectual reason. Social media has become the death knell of values, a harbinger of sorrow. A disorder which is the eating up concentration of youth and even adults. Use it to evolve, benefit others, but don’t get abused by it, harm others and devolve!

An effort has to be made to save the youth. Leaders need to plan a paradigm shift in education. An awakened person would leave behind a cleaner world and not unresolved filth for the young to remove. Albert Einstein made an apt, wise statement: ‘We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them’.

Oh folks! Isn’t it time to wake up? Awaken the intellect with the knowledge of Vedanta.

It is hence time to go back only to move forward in Time.

  • The message of Interfaith Actions comes loud and clear from the Parliament of World Religions

The message of Interfaith Actions comes loud and clear from the Parliament of World Religions

Islam, Sikh, Hindu, Jain and Christian faith leaders at the All-Faith Seminary International booth of Parliament of World Religions Expo.

CHICAGO, IL (TIP): The message resonates with clarity and conviction: We must join hands, unite, and safeguard the religious rights of all faiths. The Parliament of World Religions (PoWR) has traversed a remarkable journey since 1893. The 1893 Parliament of the World’s Religions brought together 400 men and women, representing 41 diverse religious traditions. It was during this momentous gathering that Catholicism and Judaism gained recognition as significant American religions, and the luminous traditions of Hinduism and Buddhism were unveiled to the Western world.

In the contemporary landscape, where the specters of religious fanaticism and state-sanctioned alienation loom large, the initial tableau of the plenary challenges our reality. The camaraderie among individuals from Mexico, China, and India on the dais extends a warm invitation to stakeholders of faith, beckoning them towards a realm of peace, harmony, and genuine discourse on pressing matters. Chicago’s atmosphere was electric, and Mayor Brandon Johnson astutely proclaimed, “In this moment, seeking refuge solely within scriptures and holy texts falls short; it is essential to exhibit the most magnificent creation and power of humanity – the act of love.”

PoWR 2023 resounded as a summons to conscience. The central theme was the defense of freedom and Human Rights. A sojourn through the exhibition hall became a journey into one’s moral compass. Here, spiritual traditions, religious collectives, faith-based seminaries, modern mantras for bonding, ancient sutras for equilibrium, poignant reflections on religious animosity, organizations dedicated to social progress, and revitalizing yoga meditations converged. One stall orchestrated interfaith harmonies through melodious songs, while another presented sobering data on minorities targeted by right-wing regimes. Tokens of memory took the form of pens, badges, shirts, chocolates, pins, and meticulously annotated leaflets and brochures. The Boston School of Theology extended courses to fathom the nuances of various religions, while the Divine Life Society resonated with masses, nurturing understanding through the prism of yoga. The panorama was a tapestry woven with the threads of diversity.

The PoWR embodies an idea. Over 250 breakout sessions grappled with diverse subjects. The inner dialogues, cast as a broad mandate, often witnessed some gems eclipsed in the shadows. The spectrum of topics, spanning the gamut from deconstructing religious patriarchy to serendipitous revelations in the realm of anti-nuclear activism, enticed discerning minds. Yet, amidst the symphony of simultaneous sessions, flowing with the current was akin to chasing ephemeral wisps. The plenary sessions, a harmonious ensemble of thought, struck deep chords. The Women’s Assembly held profound significance, addressing the very core of female participation within faith-infused societies. Amidst this resplendence, the assembly advocating climate action, the council amplifying indigenous voices, and the solemn rite of climate repentance shone a luminous light on faith’s role.

Packed Hall for the Closing Plenary or Parliament of World Religions in MCCormick Place of Chicago.

Within the tapestry of aspirations, it was religious fanaticism that garnered the earnest ears of all. Rev. Jen Butler, the visionary founder of Faith in Public Life, lamented, “Religion, once the sanctuary of moral teachings, now stands manipulated, its moral fabric corroded by heinous acts of violence. Autocratic forces wield religion as an instrument for amassing power and maintaining control, from the prism of Russian Orthodox nationalism to the fervor of Catholic nationalism in Hungary and Poland, from India’s Hindutva to Israel’s nascent ruling coalition’s Jewish nationalism, and further to the evangelical and Pentecostal strains of religious nationalism in the U.S. and Brazil.” The expo center echoed this sentiment with a clamor of urgency.

The Langar, an enchanting ritual embedded in past PoWR gatherings, enchanted thousands. Orchestrated by the Birmingham-based Nishkam Seva Jatha, this Sikh tradition was brought to life under the guidance of Bhai Sahab Mohinder Singh, who joyously proclaimed adherence to Sikh guru teachings through service to the world, transcending all biases. Faith leaders, adorned with white scarves, formed orderly queues, savoring Indian delicacies with hearts full of contentment. Within the tent, a grand theater of interfaith harmony and service unfolded. Nishkam Seva Jatha’s legacy of offering free langar since the 2004 PoWR was radiant.

Expo area of Parliament of World Religions. More than 100 stalls from various Faith traditions.

A poignant tribute unfolded for the 30,000 children lost to gun violence. Scraps of orange fabric coalesced into labyrinthine patterns or transformed into raw tools by the skilled hands of Shane Claiborne’s blacksmith forge. His declaration reverberated, “When we mold that metal, it resounds with the proclamation that the world can be reshaped.”

The Parliament of World Religions 2023 encapsulates the elements required for reimagining our perceptions of faith. It beckoned forth distinguished faith leaders, entwining them in conversations that bear rich fruit. Concealed within closed chambers, the International Religious Freedom Roundtable murmured profound secrets, reminiscent of the hallowed halls of Washington. The Indian delegation of interfaith leaders radiated with fervor. The quest for a better world necessitates the exchange of ideas. PoWR has evolved into a pertinent platform for intricate discussions, where faith assumes a fresh and actionable agenda.

The event, which is a much needed and inclusive display of acknowledging and understanding different religions, faiths, and cultural practices, will be held in Chicago from August 14 to August 18.
Entitled the Parliament of the World’s Religions, the 2023 edition will see thousands of attendees.

In a remarkable gesture, the Sikh community of Illinois, led by the Sikh Religious Society of Palatine, will be serving a daily langar to over 6,000 delegates of the event. Langar is a free, communal meal that is served to everyone regardless of their faith or culture. It is an important tenet of the Sikh faith. Before this, the Sikh community has extended similar gestures during earlier editions of the Parliament of the World’s Religions as well. In 2018, they served thousands of delegates in Toronto, and prior to that, in Salt Lake City and Barcelona, Spain.
The event will see participants from more than 200 religious, Indigenous, and secular beliefs coming together. More than 80 nations are expected to be part of the event. • Indian American man hiding at Chicago airport for three months for fear of Covid, arrested and charged with criminal trespass

Indian American man hiding at Chicago airport for three months for fear of Covid, arrested and charged with criminal trespass

CHICAGO (TIP): Too afraid to fly due to Covid-19 pandemic, an Indian American man hid out for three months in a secured area of Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport until his weekend arrest.

Aditya Singh, 36, a California resident, has been charged with felony criminal trespass to a restricted area of an airport and misdemeanor theft, Chicago Tribune reported citing prosecutors.

Singh arrived at O’Hare on a flight from Los Angeles on October 19 and allegedly has lived in the airport’s security zone ever since, without detection, prosecutors told a bond court Sunday.

Cook County Judge Susana Ortiz reacted incredulously Sunday after a prosecutor detailed the allegations, according to the Tribune. “So, if I understand you correctly,” Ortiz was quoted as saying, “you’re telling me that an unauthorized, non-employee individual was allegedly living within a secure part of the O’Hare airport terminal from Oct. 19, 2020, to Jan. 16, 2021, and was not detected? I want to understand you correctly.”

Early Saturday afternoon, two United Airlines employees approached Singh and asked to see his identification. Singh lowered his face mask and showed them an airport ID badge that he was wearing around his neck, the media said citing Assistant State’s Attorney Kathleen Hagerty.

The badge actually belonged to an operations manager who had reported it missing Oct. 26. The employees called 911. Police took Singh into custody about 11:10 a.m. Saturday in Terminal 2 near Gate F12.

Hagerty said Singh reportedly found the badge in the airport and was “scared to go home due to Covid.” She told the judge other passengers were giving him food.

Singh lives with roommates in Orange, California, southeast of Los Angeles, and does not have a criminal background, according to Assistant Public Defender Courtney Smallwood.

She said he has a master’s degree in hospitality and is unemployed. Smallwood acknowledged the circumstances were unusual but noted the allegations were nonviolent. It was unclear what brought Singh to Chicago and if he has any ties to the area. As a condition of bail, Ortiz barred Singh from stepping foot in the airport again if he is able to post the $1,000, he needs for his release. He is due back in court Jan. 27.

“The court finds these facts and circumstances quite shocking for the alleged period of time that this occurred,” the judge said as cited by the Tribune. “Being in a secured part of the airport under a fake ID badge allegedly, based upon the need for airports to be absolutely secure so that people feel safe to travel, I do find those alleged actions do make him a danger to the community.”

  • Indian American World Renowned Microbiologist Ananda Mohan Chakrabarty Passes Away

Indian American World Renowned Microbiologist Ananda Mohan Chakrabarty Passes Away

CHICAGO (TIP): Indian American Microbiologist Ananda Mohan Chakrabarty, who is most notable for his creation of a biology-based solution for cleaning up toxic spills using Burkholderia cepacia, or B. cepacian, passed away July 10 in Illinois. Chakrabarty, 82, was an Emeritus distinguished professor of microbiology and immunology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine (UIC).

Chakrabarty earned his PhD at the University of Calcutta in India in 1965 and then moved to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). After six productive years in Urbana, Chakrabarty moved to upstate New York where he introduced plasmid mediated biodegradation work to the General Electric Company, which was making its first move toward bio and environmental microbiology.

In his days as a young scientist at General Electric, Chakrabarty developed the B. cepacia bacterium in his laboratory.  The bacterium has the ability to break down crude oil into simpler substances that can serve as food for aquatic life. B. cepacia was the subject of a landmark 1980 U.S. Supreme Court decision that said forms of life created in the laboratory can be patented.

In “Diamond vs. Chakrabarty,” the U.S. Supreme Court held with a five to four vote that living, man-made microorganisms are patentable. The court ruled that patents could be issued for “anything under the sun that is made by man.” Many say that Chakrabarty’s battle for patent protection paved the way for future patenting of biotechnological discovery.

In 1979, Chakrabarty moved to the University of Illinois College of Medicine, and he remained at UIC until retiring in 2018. His large and productive laboratory group of Ph.D. students, postdocs and sabbatical visitors continued work with the molecular biology of plasmid-bearing Pseudomonas capable of metabolizing man-made toxic organic agents. An area of medically important research in Chakrabarty’s lab was the biosynthesis of alginate by the human infectious Pseudomonas.

Chakrabarty’s fame as the name on the first patent for a recombinant microbe led to a second career as an expert and lecturer on legal issues of patenting and intellectual property rights of biological significance. He sat on many American and international committees and taught in workshops for American and international judges on these matters. For his achievements in genetic engineering technology, he was awarded the prestigious civilian Padma Shri by the government of India in 2007. He was for many years a global roving ambassador for UIC.

Shah, Vijay Dave, Maarten de Jeu, Babu Patel, Keerthi Kumar Ravoori, and Nick Patel.

“Chicago has a unique history with India, from the Parliament of World Religions in 1893, when Swami Vivekananda came and spoke of the universal unity of religion,” said Smita Shah, chairman of the Delhi Committee. “It is fitting that Chicago is among the first to recognize Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth Anniversary.”

“Chicago and the Delhi Committee is one of the first to have an annual Mahatma Gandhi celebration,” commented Andrea Zopp, former Deputy Mayor and CEO of World Business Chicago. “This is unique, and we are honored to do it.”

“The Delhi Committee of Chicago Sister Cities promotes cultural, social and economic exchange between the citizens of Chicago and the citizens of India,” said Smita N. Shah. “We honor Gandhi today, because it is such a significant example of the value of global exchanges.”

Senator Durbin explained how Mahatma Gandhi “was inspired by American philosopher Henry David Thoreau, in the concept of civil disobedience.  In return, he inspired many world leaders, including Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King,” said Senator Durbin.  “We can all have an impact on improving lives by working together.”

Senator Durbin also spoke of the importance of immigrants in this country.  “Immigrants in this country have made a tremendous contribution,” Senator Durbin noted. “This Senator believes in immigration. This Senator stands by the communities of the City of Chicago.”

Delhi Chairman Smita Shah, in introducing Mayor Lightfoot, noted that “Gandhi’s fight for independence included a desire to fight poverty, create social economic opportunity for citizens and to ensure the preservation of human dignity,”

Mayor Lightfoot gave a moving and impassioned speech about Mahatma Gandhi and his contributions, and how we all can learn from him.  “Poverty is the worst form of violence,” she quoted Gandhiji.  “We must do better for all of our communities.  We must do better for our immigrant communities.”

Smita N. Shah noted, “I see Mayor Lightfoot in that same fight for human dignity for all. Mayor Lightfoot reminds our community and the citizens of this City that strength and conviction belongs to everyone, and that we need to do well for each member of our city.  That we cannot be successful unless each neighborhood and community has an opportunity for education and economic opportunity.”

“This is about human dignity,” said Mayor Lightfoot. “We are going to give all people, in every community, especially the neediest and including the immigrant community, their dignity.”

Excerpts from Proclamation, full image follows below:

“Whereas October 2, 2019 marks the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi; and “Whereas, Gandhi is revered the world over for his nonviolent philosophy of passive resistance and as an advocate for all people, including the poor and disenfranchised, championing the causes of education, economic opportunity, and equality amongst all; and “Whereas Gandhi is often named among the 20th century’s most important figures…

“Whereas, founded in 2014 by the Delhi Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International, under the leadership of Smita Shah, the Annual Legacy of Mahatma Gandhi Luncheon honors Gandhi’s lasting contributions and inspires us all to follow the example left by him:

  • First Ever Women’s Business Expo & Job Fair in Chicago Indian community organized

First Ever Women’s Business Expo & Job Fair in Chicago Indian community organized

CHICAGO, IL(TIP): The Womens Empowerment Campaign of Chicago (WE) organized the very first Womens Business Expo & Job Fair on Sunday Sept 16th, 2018 at the Waterford Banquets, Elmhurst IL. The goal was to serve as a platform for women-owned businesses & women professionals. The event was a huge success including a business expo, job fair, motivational speakers, high-level public officials, personality pageant, fashion show, dance performances, youth forum & more. WE is a networking & empowerment platform for Indian women in Chicagoland with over 1700 members. Council General of India Neeta Bhushan was the chief guest of the event. “What organizations like WE is doing for the women of our community is commendable. Platforms like WE are very needed. For our community to prosper women business owners must be supported” said Neeta Bhushan.

WE was launched by Rita Singh, Shital Daftari & Dr. Anuja Gupta in Nov 2017. “We wanted to form a group that showed the power of Indian women in Chicago” said the founders. The philosophy of the founders and leadership team was to build a powerful community of support for Indian women in Chicagoland thru this platform. The founders are prominent businesswomen & community leaders in Chicagoland. “I was looking for a networking platform specifically for Indians in Chicago. There was no major networks & the existing organizations seemed small. That’s when I thought there’s definitely a need for a big organized network” says Dr. Anuja Gupta who is a physician and real estate developer of Verandah Retirement Community. Rita Singh who is an IT business owner and also has experience in show business says, “I had a very gratifying experience mentoring other people who wanted to start their own business and wanted to do it on a larger scale thru this platform. I wanted to make a meaningful difference in the Indian community”. Shital Daftari who is an e-commerce business owner of Saris & Things had a different perspective, “when I came to this country on an H1B visa I didn’t know where to start to find friends and other like-minded people. Rita Singh, another founder of WE, added “Empowering small businesses owned by women is one of the best services we can provide on our platform. With the mission of preserving and sharing Jain way of life, JSMC has grown great with 1900+ proud life members (families) and expanded its facilities in a 17.5-acre lot with a monumental temple and Community Center.

Since 1970s, Chicago has experienced tremendous growth in population. A great part of this growth has come about as Chicago has become more international in character. Story of Jains in Chicago parallels that of Chicago. During this brief period, Jain population exploded from less than thirty families to more than nineteen hundred families. Jains built a beautiful eighty-four thousand square feet Jain Center and Temple at 435 North Route 59, on the northeast corner of Route 59 and Route 20 in Bartlett, Illinois. President of JSMC executive committee Mr. Vipul Shah is very excited and mentioned that, “This is a milestone year for all Jains in and around Chicago and indeed the whole of US. We have put in a lot of planning to ensure that all our guests have a great experience.” Chairman and Board of Trustees of JSMC, Mr. Atul Shah added, “Our unity, dedicated volunteers, visionary leaders and generous donors, over the last 25 years is the main reason that we are a role model Jain society in North America.”

The ten- day celebration includes various religious, cultural, educational and entertainment events to keep the audience enthralled. There is also a separate track of activities for youth and young adults. Planning for the celebration has been going on for the last 6 months and has now reached a feverish pace with over 200 volunteers working to put finishing touches with the Executive Committee and Board of Trustees leadership.

    JSMC Members

PR & Media co-leads Mr. Hemant Shah (past Chairman) and Dr. Mukesh Doshi (past Chairman) also explained, “We are building on a very successful legacy of 48 years of JSMC.” Chicago is very fortunate to have remarkable history of the first Jain who landed 125 years ago – when Shri Virchand Raghavji Gandhi pioneered Jainism in western world and represented Jains in first parliament of World religious conference held in Chicago in 1893.  Therefore, the roots of Jain religion were already planted. Since 1970, this society is standing on contributions of generous donors, dedicated volunteers and passionate leadership of visionaries. We are humbled to be part of this society that is regarded as symbol of Unity and harmony among all Jains.

About Jain Center of Metropolitan Chicago (JSMC)

Founded in 1970, JSMC caters to the religious, educational, cultural and community needs of Jains in and around Chicago. After building North America’s first Jain temple with Shikhar in 1993, the organization undertook a major expansion in 2008-09. With more than 1900 families as life members, JSMC has maintained its unity of Shwetamber, Digambar, Sthanakvasi and Shrimad sects over the years and has continued to inspire the Jain values of non-violence, multi-pluralism and non-possessiveness.

These members engage in various religious, cultural, educational, social and community activities on close to 160+ days in a typical year. Over 500 students register in the Pathshaala that meets every 1st and 3rd Sunday. The Center has also become a preferred location to host other events – given its state of the art community hall and dining facility available on rental. A 7-person elected Board and a 13-person elected Executive Committee manage JSMC with support from many /committees.

Jainism is a religion and a way of life for Jains around the world.  The primary purpose of JSMC is to increase the awareness of the principles of Jainism, achieve the unity of all Jains, provide a platform wherefrom to project the voice of Jain religion, promote the feeling of amity and unity among Jains and to promote inter-faith understanding. Jainism, which originated in India, at least five thousand years ago, has largest number of followers (about 4 million) in India.  It has nonetheless, influenced the world peace through its message of non-violence and forgiveness. Jainism indirectly influenced Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, as he followed the example and non-violent methods of Mahatma Gandhi in his struggle for equality and civil rights for all minorities in USA.

Jains have been on a path of Non-Violence, Non-Absolutism (Anekantvad), and Non-possession (Aparigrah) for thousands of years. And Science is walking hand in hand with us on this path. For thousands of years, Jains have believed in meditation, yoga, animal compassion, vegetarianism, environmentalism, equal rights for women, respect for other cultures and forgiveness. Jains believe that universe is eternal and that Jain religion, which explains the rules of the universe, is therefore eternal, with no beginning and no end. Last perfected soul known (Tirthankar) to us is Lord Mahavir, who was born in 599BC, near Patna in Bihar, India.

Chicago Tamil Women Celebrate International Women’s Day

CHICAGO, IL(TIP): There is only one thing more precious than our time & that is who we spend it on. It was truly a time well spent in the company of wonderful friends and acquaintances celebrating the international women’s day 2018 on the evening of March 17th organized by PENN (Penn in Indian language Tamil means woman), a group of extremely talented women belonging to the Indian community in the Chicagoland area who had come together to present to us an outstanding program that evening.  The air was festive with the organizers, guest speakers and most of the audience members attired in the most spectacular array of colors in the traditional wear of India.

The event started with the guest speaker Mrs. Rajeshwari Chandrasekaran, a consul with Indian embassy who set the tone and mood for the entire evening, which was a very happy one with her witty down to earth speech.  The next speaker was Dr. Mallika Rajendran (Gynecologist) who addressed various women’s health issues from puberty to adulthood and beyond, followed by Dr. Viji Susarla, a clinical Psychologist who covered the topic very dear to every parent, our “Children” and our concerns particularly when they go through that adolescence phase. The challenges, pressures, and competition our children face now are much more than many of us would have faced a few decades ago. The next presentation was by a young lady named Amrita Raghuraman on E-Cigarettes and vaping among young ones which was an eye opener for many parents.  The last, but not the least, was a stellar presentation by Attorney Sharanya Gururajan on Estate Planning (Will & Trust).  She was candid, straight forward and funny.  The thing that made the evening most interesting was the interactive session between the experts in various fields and the audience.

Added to the fun were the impromptu standup comedy, the most aromatic spread of food, beautiful stalls selling colorful Indian clothing, fashion jewelry, and hand-made gift items. All received a lovely goody bag & a copy of the Penn Magazine done so artistically, filled with pages of articles, short stories, poems, sketches, photographs and recipes as a take home souvenir.

  • Indian architect and educator Balkrishna Doshi is 2018 Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize

Indian architect and educator Balkrishna Doshi is 2018 Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize

CHICAGO (TIP): Legendary Indian architect Balkrishna Doshi won the Pritzker Architecture Prize, which honors a living architect who has produced consistent and significant contributions to humanity and the built environment through the art of architecture.

The award, established by the Pritzker family of Chicago, is awarded each year to a legendary architect and is dubbed as “architecture’s Nobel”, the biggest honor for those working in this profession. The winners of the coveted award are architects whose built work demonstrates a combination of talent, vision, and commitment.

Doshi, 90, was born in Pune, India, to a family that had a history of furniture trade for two generations. He joined the Sir J.J. School of Architecture Bombay (Mumbai) in 1947 – the year India got its independence, to study architecture. The institute is the oldest and one of the foremost institutions for architecture in India.

With a dream of joining the Royal Institute of British Architects, he sailed to London and later to Paris to work with Le Corbusier.

Later he returned to India to oversee some of Le Corbusier’s projects in Chandigarh and Ahmedabad, which include the Mill Owner’s Association Building (Ahmedabad, 1954) and Shodhan House (Ahmedabad, 1956), among others.

Doshi also worked with Louis Kahn as an associate to build the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, and later started his own architectural firm by the name Vastushilpa with just two architects, which is now renamed as Vastushilpa Consultants. The firm now has five partners and sixty employees and has completed over 100 projects.

“My works are an extension of my life, philosophy and dreams trying to create treasury of the architectural spirit. I owe this prestigious prize to my guru, Le Corbusier. His teachings led me to question identity and compelled me to discover new regionally adopted contemporary expression for a sustainable holistic habitat,” Doshi said after he won the prize.

“Professor Doshi has said that ‘Design converts shelters into homes, housing into communities, and cities into magnets of opportunities,” the Pritzker jury said. “The life’s work of Balkrishna Doshi truly underscores the mission of the Prize—demonstrating the art of architecture and an invaluable service to humanity. I am honored to present the 40th anniversary of this award to an architect who has contributed more than 60 years of service to us all.”

Doshi has been recognized both within India and internationally. He is the recipient of the Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters of France (2011); Global Award for Lifetime Achievement for Sustainable Architecture, Institut Francais d’Architecture, Paris (2007); Prime Minister’s National Award for Excellence in Urban Planning and Design, India (2000); Aga Khan Award for Architecture (1993-1995) for Aranya Community Housing; Gold Medal, Academy of Architecture of France (1988); Gold Medal, Indian Institute of Architects (1988); and Padma Shree National Award, Government of India (1976).

Doshi is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Indian Institute of Architects, and an Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. He served on the Pritzker Prize Jury from 2005 to 2007, and on selection committees for the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts and the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.

He has been a visiting professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology; University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia; University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign; Rice University, Houston; Washington University in St. Louis; and University of Hong Kong, among others, and has lectured at prestigious schools and institutions throughout the world.

Doshi was a member of the International Committee for preparing the International Charter on the Education of Architects, sponsored by International Union of Architects in association with UNESCO (1995), and holds honorary doctorates from the University of Pennsylvania, United States (1990) and McGill University, Canada (2005).

United States Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi urges Chicagoans to vote for Illinois primary election

As I have said many times, if you don’t have a seat at the table, then you are on the menu. Registering to vote and voting ensures at your voice is heard and you have a proverbial seat at the table when important decisions are made affecting you.”

Registering to vote and voting ensures that your voice is heard, and you have a proverbial seat at the table when important decisions are made affecting you.”

Volunteers and friends of Krishnamoorthi helped register voters at the Itasca temple last week. The efforts at the event will be replicated by him elsewhere to help increase the number of registered voters in the Indian-American community.

“My constituents sent me to Washington to work every day on growing and strengthening the middle class, and that’s what we’ve done,” Krishnamoorthi said. “These resources will help us amplify that message to continue our important work in Congress. Krishnamoorthi and Republican Congressman Glenn “GT” Thompson of Pennsylvania are the two lead sponsors of bipartisan legislation that passed the House of Representatives unanimously to improve career and technical education, as well as to help give Americans the skills they need to compete for in-demand jobs.

The Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act (H.R. 2353) reauthorizes the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act and is the first major overhaul of the program since 2006.

“As President Trump said in his State of the Union speech, career and technical education is going to be a critical part of our country’s economy, and this legislation will help strengthen and modernize it,” Krishnamoorthi said. “The bill works to close the skills gap by pairing businesses and educators together to establish training programs to prepare students for in-demand careers.” The son of immigrants, Krishnamoorthi was elected to Congress in November 2016 with nearly 60 percent of the vote against his Republican opponent.
