SAAMI BROTHERS, leading sacred soundscape of Khayal (Hindustani Classical Music), will perform at the Kaufman Music Center’s Merkin Hall, Abraham Goodman House, 129 West 67th Street, New York, NY. Phone – 212 501 3330 – on Saturday, October 4, 2025.
The Saami Brothers are the leading representatives of ‘Qawal Bachay.’ The Qawwal Bacchon Ka Gharana or Dilli Gharana is the oldest Qawwal gharana. A gharana is a system of social organisation in the Indian subcontinent, linking musicians or dancers by lineage or apprenticeship of the Hindustani Classical music tradition. It was founded by Hazrat Amir Khusrau (1253-1325) and his students in the 13th century.
The evening offers the opportunity to experience the sacred soundscape of Khayal in its most authentic expression, with Ustads Rauf and Urooj on vocals, Ahmed Saami on harmonium, and their father, the revered Ustad Naseeruddin Saami, appearing as a special guest. They will be accompanied by sarangi – a bowed stringed instrument which mimics the sound and depth of voice, and tabla.
