  • WALL STREET EXEC INSPIRES TEACHING TEENS LIFE LESSONS

    • By Mabel Pais

“I believe it is important for all young people to have time, resources and opportunities to think about the life they want to make for themselves and not just how they will make a living,” Ed Hajim

What is the Ed Hajim Professional Readiness Program?

This fall, The New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) will launch a new initiative for its arts education students, the Ed Hajim Professional Readiness Program, which will offer rising teen artists, 14 and up, a series of free classes and opportunities that will propel them towards a successful career in the performing arts. The program will equip student performers with skills and strategies necessary to succeed professionally in the performing arts.

Inspired by Hajim’s book, ‘Island of the Four Ps: A Modern Fable About Preparing for Your Future,’ a guide to success in life and business told in the form of a fable, the program is designed to let young artists harness the elements of success that propelled Hajim himself from foster care to Wall Street board rooms.

Hajim, a leading business executive who held senior management positions with the Capital Group, E.F. Hutton, and Lehman Brothers before becoming chairman and CEO of Furman Selz, is supporting the program with a significant gift to the Arts Center. He will also meet with participants to share with them how he made his way from an orphanage to Harvard Business School and the C-suite of multiple financial firms.

While career preparedness has always been an element of NJPAC’s extensive arts education programs  – which offer thousands of young people skills instruction in vocal and instrumental jazz music, acting, musical theater and hip-hop arts every year – the PREP initiative will formalize and significantly expand those offerings.

“Ed Hajim’s life story is a remarkable one, and the lessons he’s gleaned from his extraordinary career have inspired us to create a series of workshops and programs for our students to ensure they’re fully prepared for their professional lives. Success in the performing arts requires talent, of course, but also practical and interpersonal skills that Ed has uniquely identified,” says John Schreiber, President and CEO of NJPAC. “The career-readiness aspect of our arts education programming will be turbocharged by this gift and by Ed’s personal engagement with our students.”

“These initiatives will help our students marry their raw talent with the skills they need to become thriving businesspeople as well as great performers. They’ll be able to explore their passions, and develop the skills that will allow them to make informed plans for their futures, all here at the Arts Center,” says Rosa Hyde, Senior Director Arts Ed Performances and Special Events at NJPAC.

    PROGRAM

The  program – which is FREE to current NJPAC students who desire to pursue a profession in the arts, and to alumni of the Arts Center’s arts training programs – will guide students through a series of steps that will advance their career readiness. Starting at age 14, and continuing through their university-level education and the early years of their professional work, students will receive both instruction in key skills and access to a ready-made professional network. The programs that will be available to NJPAC students beginning in Fall 2024 include:

    • Business of the Arts Workshops: For students ages 14 to 18

A year-long series of two-hour Saturday seminars (offered immediately following NJPAC’s Saturday arts training classes)  on the practical skills young artists will need to advance their careers, including resume-writing, social media management, contract and financial literacy and audition etiquette, taught both by working artists and professionals in other fields.

    • The Production Education Assistants program: For students and alumni ages 18-30

Students and alumni will be offered the opportunity to take a month-long series of bi-weekly classes in technical theater skills, from light and sound design to stage management. Once classes are completed, they will have the opportunity to learn from and shadow professional stagehands. Participants will have the opportunity to sit for the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) BACKstage Exam (Basic and Comprehensive Knowledge Exam for High School Technical Theatre Students), a prerequisite for consideration for union membership.

    • NJPAC Alumni Network: For graduates of the Arts Centers arts training programs New alumni will now be able to join and learn from a community of NJPAC-trained artists. Through this network, not only will alumni be able to share insights and information with fellow artists, but the Arts Center will be able to call upon its graduates to provide mentorship to younger artists, perform at events, advise on programming and share their success stories. Through a new online platform, alumni will be able to network with peers who can provide advice, share job leads, and collaborate creatively. These additions to the Arts Center’s arts education curriculum will also include expansions of career-focused initiatives that have been piloted at NJPAC in recent years including:
    • Creative Coaching: For student artists ages 14 through 18. The Creative Coaching program pairs arts training students with teaching artists who serve as their mentors for two years. Working together, student and mentor identify a career-focused goal for the year – from producing a student’s first EP to preparing a repertoire of songs and monologues for auditions – and work together on the steps toward achieving that goal. Mentors and students meet twice a week throughout the school year.
    • The Creator’s Room: For students ages 16 to 18 A quarterly series of conversations at which students can meet with working professional artists to both network and pick up tips and insight on how to handle auditions, how to find representation, where best to seek our job opportunities in today’s market, even how to dress for auditions and rehearsals. These meetings are designed to offer students the nitty-gritty details of pursuing a career in the arts, from artists who are currently working in the field.

Finally, with this training supporting them, students engaged in the  program will be able to take on paid performance jobs through the Arts Center’s unique placement service for the students it trains:

    • Brick City Booking: For current students aged 14 and up, and NJPAC alumni

Student artists and recent alumni can access paid performance opportunities, and work with staff and mentors to negotiate contract terms, prepare repertoire, and nurture ongoing relationships with clients, through this service, NJPAC’s student and alumni “booking agency.”

  • WHAT DOES THE FORMER FIRST LADY & US SENATOR SHARE WITH US?

WHAT DOES THE FORMER FIRST LADY & US SENATOR SHARE WITH US?

    By Mabel Pais

“Let’s keep fighting and let’s keep the faith. And let’s lift each other as we move forward on this journey.” – Hillary Rodham Clinton
HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON: First Lady, U.S. Senator, U.S. Secretary of State, presidential candidate, advocate, attorney – has spent five decades in public service. She now makes a stop on her Fall tour of the United States at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.

    HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON

As First Lady of the United States, from 1993 to 2001, Hillary Clinton championed health care for all Americans and led successful bipartisan efforts to improve the adoption and foster care systems, reduce teen pregnancy, and create the Children’s Health Insurance Program.

In 2000, Clinton made history as the first First Lady elected to the United States Senate, and the first woman elected to statewide office in New York.

In 2007, she began her first historic campaign for president, winning 18 million votes and becoming the first woman to ever win a presidential primary or caucus state. In the 2008 general election, she campaigned for Barack Obama and Joe Biden, and in December, she was nominated by President-elect Obama to be Secretary of State.

In 2016, Clinton made history again by becoming the first woman nominated for president by a major U.S. political party. As the Democratic candidate for president, she campaigned on a vision of America that is “stronger together” and an agenda to make our economy work for everyone, not just those at the top. She won the national popular vote, earning the support of nearly 66 million Americans.

Since leaving civil service and electoral politics, Clinton has remained an active force for progress and human rights. In recent years, she has leant her decades of experience to nurturing the next generation of leaders.

In 2023, Clinton went back to the classroom when she joined Columbia University as a co-founder of the Institute of Global Politics and Professor of Practice at the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). She teaches a course with Dean Keren Yarhi-Milo called Inside the Situation Room, which engages young scholars with insights from diverse academic fields and the direct experience of high level diplomats, journalists, and other experts.

Her commitment to the stories we tell ourselves about who we are as Americans and what kind of future we want for our children and our grandchildren extends to her work as an author, podcast host, and television and Broadway producer.

Clinton is the author of ten best-selling books, including her groundbreaking book on children, ‘It Takes A Village’ (1996); ‘Dear Socks, Dear Buddy’ (1998); ‘An Invitation to the White House’ (2000); her memoirs, ‘Living History’ (2003), ‘Hard Choices’ (2014), and ‘What Happened’ (2017); a picture book edition of ‘It Takes a Village’ (2017); ‘The Book of Gutsy Women’ (2019) and ‘Grandma’s Gardens’ (2020), in collaboration with Chelsea Clinton; and her political thriller, ‘State of Terror’ (2021), with Louise Penny. Her podcast, ‘You and Me Both’, features candid, in-depth, and sometimes hilarious conversations with actors, activists, and other people who have unique perspectives on the challenges and joys of modern life. Clinton is the founder of HiddenLight Productions, a global studio dedicated to bringing the stories of inspiring individuals and movements to TV, film, and streaming. The studio’s projects include ‘Gutsy’, a television adaptation of ‘The Book of Gutsy Women’, in which Hillary and Chelsea Clinton interview remarkable women in all walks of life.

In 2024, Clinton produced her first Broadway show, ‘SUFFS’, a love letter to the complicated women who fought for the right to vote and for a future they would never see but knew was possible. The musical was nominated for six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and won two Tony Awards for Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score.

“I’m so excited to add 10 more cities to my Fall tour. I hope you can join me for wide-ranging conversations that go behind the scenes and include never-before told stories,” says Secretary Clinton. “We’ll discuss the state of our politics and creating the future we want for our children and grandchildren and, most of all, have some fun while we’re at it!”

    PROGRAM

At each event, Secretary Clinton and a moderator will take the audience on a journey of unvarnished exchanges on politics, democracy, the threats we face, as well as friendship, aging, marriage, and how we can all work together to shape a future to be proud of.

The ‘New York Times’ best-selling author and GRAMMY-award winner’s new book, ‘Something Lost, Something Gained: Reflections on Life, Love, and Liberty’ will be released by Simon & Schuster on September 17th, 2024.

    Richard Dawkins. (Credit: Courtesy, NJPAC.)
    • By Mabel Pais

Experience an unforgettable evening by familiarizing yourself with PROFESSOR RICHARD DAWKINS, one of the world’s world-renowned truth-teller, respected evolutionary biologist, best-selling author, and secularist intellectual, as he brings his highly anticipated tour to the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) on Friday, September 13, 2024 at 7 pm.

He is celebrated globally for his honest critique of religion and tradition and his push for critical thinking, renowned for his unapologetic advocacy of science and reason, and the separation of church and state (religion and science).

From 1995 to 2008 Richard Dawkins was the Charles Simonyi Professor of the Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and of the Royal Society of Literature. In 2013, his around-the-world speaking tour was the focus of the documentary ‘The Unbelievers’ which also features appearances by Woody Allen, Stephen Colbert, Cameron Diaz, Ian McEwan, Ricky Gervais, Stephen Hawking, Eddie Izzard, Bill Pullman, and Sarah Silverman.

He is an internationally best-selling author. Among his books are ‘The Ancestor’s Tale’, ‘The Selfish Gene’, ‘The Blind Watchmaker, ‘Climbing Mount Improbable’, ‘Unweaving the Rainbow’, ‘A Devil’s Chaplain’, ‘The God Delusion’, ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’ and ‘The Magic of Reality’.

Dawkins is celebrated for his groundbreaking work as ‘Unweaving The Rainbow’, ‘The Selfish Gene’ and ‘The God Delusion’, captivating millions with his passion for scientific inquiry. His two-part autobiography: Part 1 ‘An Appetite for Wonder,’ and ‘A Brief Candle in the Dark’ were released in 2013 and 2015, respectively. Learn more at richarddawkins.net.

Praise for the upcoming ‘The Genetic Book of the Dead’:

“Overflowing with the beauty of nature, the beauty of language, and the beauty of ideas.” – Steven Pinker, author of Rationality and Enlightenment Now

“Dazzling in originality and scope, with beautiful illustrations, this is a wonderful celebration of the power of natural selection. Richard Dawkins reveals with brilliant clarity the imprint on organisms of their evolutionary past.”

    – Nick Davies, author of ‘Cuckoo: Cheating By Nature’

“Once again, Richard Dawkins asks us to look at the living world in a totally novel way: Every organism carries, in its genes, a record of the past environments in which its ancestors survived. This brilliant new way of interpreting nature opens our eyes to both the past and the future.”

    – John R. Krebs, author of ‘Food: A Very Short Introduction’ and coauthor, ‘An Introduction to Behavioral Ecology’

“Written with typical verve and panache, Richard Dawkins’s ‘The Genetic Book of the Dead’ makes a brilliant contribution to the public understanding of evolution using our most up-to-date understanding of genetics. It will enthrall, surprise, and challenge you. Read it!”

    – Jerry A. Coyne, author of ‘Why Evolution is True’ and ‘Faith Versus Fact’

“This book is a summation of the ideas of the author who brought us ‘memes’ and ‘selfish genes.’ Richard Dawkins’s lucid prose will change the way you think about your evolutionary past.”

    – David Haig, author of ‘From Darwin to Derrida: Selfish Genes, Social Selves, and the Meanings of Life’

“The ingenuity of evolution is infinite, a fact that fascinates Richard Dawkins as much as it fascinated Charles Darwin. Inside each organism he finds rich palimpsests chronicling the history of life itself.”

    – Matt Ridley, author of The Evolution of Everything and How Innovation Works

“The deployment of the conceit of genes looking backward in time is clever and well done. A piece of vivid popular science.”

    – Stephen Stearns, coauthor of ‘Evolution: An Introduction’

    PROGRAM

Dawkins aims to connect with audiences in unscripted conversations touching on topics from science to religion, life on earth and beyond. With his trademark honesty and wit, Dawkins promises an evening filled with wisdom and insight.

Don’t miss the opportunity to be part of this enlightening experience and hear firsthand about Dawkins’ upcoming book promoted on tour: ‘The Genetic Book of the Dead’ delves into the transformative potential of DNA in our understanding of evolution to be released on September 17, 2024.

    SUGARCANE

Directors (left) Emily Kassie & Julian Brave NoiseCat (Photo / Courtesy filmforum.org)

Directors: Julian Brave NoiseCat & Emily Kassie; 2024; Documentary; English & Secwepemctsín; 107m

Winner: U.S. Directing Award, Sundance Film Festival 2024

“[A] stunning and brutal look at the lasting trauma of the St. Joseph’s Mission Residential School, a government-funded institution run by the Catholic Church where indigenous children were sent with the aim of stripping them of the connection to their culture… It’s a portrait of what remains when injustice occurs.” – Esther Zuckerman, IndieWire

‘SUGARCANE’ is a stunning tribute to the resilience of Native people and their way of life, the debut feature documentary from Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie.  It is an epic cinematic portrait of a community during a moment of international reckoning. Set amidst a ground-breaking investigation of abuse and death at an Indigenous residential school, the film empowers participants to break cycles of intergenerational trauma by bearing witness to painful, long-ignored truths and the love that endures within their families despite the revelation of genocide.

In 2021, evidence of unmarked graves near an indigenous residential school run by the Catholic Church in Canada sparked a national outcry about the forced separation, assimilation and abuse many children experienced at this network of segregated boarding schools designed to slowly destroy the culture and social fabric of Indigenous communities.

When Kassie – a journalist and filmmaker – asked her old friend and colleague, NoiseCat, to direct a film documenting the Williams Lake first investigation of St. Joseph’s mission, she never imagined just how close this story was to his own family. As the investigation continued, Emily and Julian traveled to the rivers, forests and mountains of his homeland to hear the myriad stories of survivors. During production, Julian’s own story became an integral part of this beautiful multi-stranded portrait of a community. By offering space, time and profound empathy, the directors unearthed what was hidden.

Kassie and NoiseCat encountered both the extraordinary pain these individuals had to suppress as a tool for survival  and a unique beauty of a group of people finding the strength to persevere.

Release: Opens at Film Forum, New York City on August 9.

    GIRLS WILL BE GIRLS

Preeti Panigrahi speaks as School Prefect (Photo / Courtesy filmforum.org)

Director: Shuchi Talati; 2024; English & Hindi; 117m

    2024 Sundance Film Festival Prize-Winner:

                                      World Cinema Drama Audience Award,

Special Jury Award for Acting (Preeti Panigrahi)

“With her first feature, Talati expertly captures the quiet wonder and aching intensity of adolescence, first love, and caring about someone whose dueling duties and desires sometimes stop them from behaving as they know they should.”  indieWire – January 24, 2024 – Proma Khosla

A model student, 16-year-old Mira (Preeti Panigrahi in a radiant debut performance) is the first-ever female prefect in charge of enforcing rules at a straitlaced Indian boarding school in the Himalayas. Despite her ambition and primness, she can’t help but fall for new student Sri (Kesav Binoy Kiron), and steals away with him to flirt and stargaze. With frankness and sensitivity, writer-director Shuchi Talati uncovers the contradictory layers of Mira’s sexual awakening, the school’s lax penalties for boys’ transgressive behavior, and the complicated feelings triggered in her protective, unfulfilled mother (Kani Kusruti, star of 2024 Cannes Film Festival Grand Prix-winner ‘All We Imagine as Light’).

Release: Opens on September 13 at Film Forum, New York City.

That will include GFF’s signature Green Carpet, and the Filmmaker Awards including the presentation of their special festival awards dedicated to films that champion environmental and social justice.

Greenpoint Film Festival Creative Director Ricardo Vilar, said, “Our film festival has grown with leaps and bounds both with the number of films offered and the expansion of our footprint here in Brooklyn. • SCHOLARSHIP AWARD ENCOURAGES CAREERS IN MUSIC

SCHOLARSHIP AWARD ENCOURAGES CAREERS IN MUSIC

    • By Mabel Pais

Wharton Arts, New Jersey’s largest non-profit community performing arts education center, awards the George Marriner Maull Careers in Music Scholarship Award to Karri Li. Karri Li, a flutist in the New Jersey Youth Symphony (NJYS) and a student of faculty member Laura George at the Wharton Performing Arts School (PAS) will attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the fall pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance.

The $1,000 scholarship is dedicated to recognizing exceptional graduating seniors from the New Jersey Youth Symphony (NJYS), a program of Wharton Arts, who are enrolling in a conservatory or school of music at the university level as they embark on their music career journey. Learn more at WhartonArts.org.

“The New Jersey Youth Symphony has already been a huge influence in my artistic journey over the past few years, so I can’t express how grateful I am to receive this scholarship and continue to be supported as I take this next step in my career,” said Li. “While making music is my passion, sharing it is my life’s true work. Without NJYS’ outreach opportunities, I may not have recognized this fundamental motivation behind my work. They are among my most cherished musical memories, as they allowed me to pay the joy of music forward and use art to improve the world. Never have I met an audience so deeply touched by a performance as that of local retirement communities; nor have I seen one so intellectually, physically, and emotionally engaged as that of Carnegie Hall on Juneteenth. Inspired by our educational concert this season, I began working with flutists at my elementary school with the goal of improving retention within our district’s music program. Influenced by Helen (Cha-Pyo) to explore how our industry can adapt to the modern landscape, I performed a study of orchestra audience development efforts on social media for my junior year AP Research project.”

Li’s flute instructor Laura George said, “Karri Li’s profound love of the flute has inspired her to practice four hours daily to thoroughly prepare for her many concerts, recitals, and master classes. Her unwavering devotion, dedication, and drive to excel are inspiring to my other students. Her lustrous, nuanced tone and inspired interpretations invite the listeners to join her on her musical journey. It has been my great joy and privilege to teach and mentor such a deserving, stellar student as she pursues her studies in her chosen profession of music.”

George Marriner Maull, an Emmy-nominated conductor and advocate for music education, served as the inaugural Music Director and Conductor of the New Jersey Youth Symphony from 1979 to 1997. Additionally, he held the position of Music Director and Conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra of New Jersey from 1987 to 2006 and has been the Artistic Director and Educator of The Discovery Orchestra for the past 18 years.

“Karri is an exceptional young musician and individual, displaying remarkable discipline, intelligence, and passion for the art of flute playing. She exemplifies the spirit of the George Marriner Maull Careers in Music Scholarship Award, and I look forward to seeing how Karri will use music to improve the lives of others along her musical journey,” said Artistic Director Helen H. Cha-Pyo.

SUMMER CAMP OFFERS MIXING VOICE AND VISUAL ART

Students mix Voice with Visual Art (Credit : whartonarts.org)

The Wharton Performing Arts School (PAS) offers a new summer program, ‘Explorations in Voice and Art,’ on the Wharton Arts campus located at 60 Locust Avenue in Berkeley Heights, July 22-26, 2024. For more information about the Performing Arts School summer camps, visit WhartonArts.org.

Explorations in Voice and Art Camp Director Tharanga Goonetilleke said, “The practice of making art based on music has been around for years but not fully scientifically explained. It is not specific to singing, but my personal experience has been primarily related to painting and vocal music. When nurtured from a young age, certain neurological connections between the parts of the brain that control a particular sense, such as hearing, can form a bridge with another part of the brain, such as sound. These connections are present in newborn babies but slowly disappear when not stimulated by the environment. The practice of painting music can help young artists reach their full potential and bring their individuality, creativity, and unique interpretation to a piece.”

Soprano Goonetilleke, a member of the voice faculty at the Performing Arts School (PAS), has been painting and drawing throughout her life, although her formal education and career has primarily been in music. She has painted and designed album covers, such as ‘Home,’ and illustrated the new ‘Jungle Book’ for the Glimmerglass Festival. She often has solo exhibitions of her artwork and paints on commission for collectors. She credits her visual art with bringing a more holistic approach to her vocal technique, musical interpretations, and stage performance.

When asked what a typical camp day will look like, Gonnetilleke said, “The day will begin with awakening our senses to listening, hearing, feeling textures, and vocal warmups. Thereafter, campers will explore the daily musical concept, such as major tonality. We will then work on a piece of music as a group, or on some days, campers may also get the opportunity to share a solo song with the class. Based on the materials covered that day, we will use the second half of the camp period to make a piece of art based on music, using different mediums and art techniques.”

All artwork for the summer camp will be composed on paper or canvas board, with the option for campers to explore watercolors, acrylic paint, markers, and color pencils. There is also scope for mixed media depending on the campers’ interests and creative expression.

Explorations in Voice and Art Camp for ages 11-16 meets daily from 9:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Students have the option to add early drop off, lunch bunch, and after care to their camp day. For more information or registration assistance, call (908) 790-0700 or email info@whartonarts.org.

    THE AUDIBLE SHOWCASE STAGE

Rising Newark artists will step into the spotlight over three days at the Audible Showcase Stage, a new feature of the ‘Prudential presents North to Shore Festival, which comes to Newark June 23-30.

For three days at Harriet Tubman Square, the ‘Audible Showcase Stage’ will present festival-goers with giveaways plus FREE performances by a lineup of up-and-coming Newark artists.

From 6 to 9 PM on Friday, June 28, and  from 12 noon to 6 PM on both Saturday, June 29, and Sunday, June 30, the Audible Showcase Stage will offer a continuous series of FREE performances by hip hop and R&B artists, comedians, spoken word poets, instrumentalists, dancers and more, with DJ sets in-between, on an outdoor stage in the city’s Harriet Tubman Square, adjacent to the recently installed monument to Tubman, Shadow of a Face.

Performances are just the start of what’s on offer. The ‘Audible Showcase Stage’ will effectively be a festival-within-a-festival with games, live music and activities for children throughout the park and food trucks on the park periphery offering a range of cuisines and beverages for kids and adults alike.

This presentation, featuring a cohort of local artists all on one stage within easy walking distance of festival venues — such as NJPAC, The Newark Museum of Art and the Newark Public Library along with the shops and restaurants on Halsey Street — is a new feature of ‘Prudential presents North to Shore Festival’, the three-week, three-city summer celebration of arts and ideas produced by NJPAC, now in its second season.

“The ‘Audible Showcase Stage’ is a way for us to shine a brighter light on a number of our city’s up-and-coming performers and, at the same time, it creates a hub where festival visitors can go to extend their stay here, take in performances that give them a real understanding of Newark’s incredibly varied cultural landscape, and maybe explore The Newark Museum of Arts or Halsey Street. It can be a destination or a stepping stone for further exploration,” says John Schreiber, President and CEO of NJPAC.

The majority of the local artists and groups appearing on the ‘Audible Showcase Stage’ are ‘Prudential presents North to Shore Official Selections’ — performers chosen from among hundreds of applicants to take part in the event by the festival’s committee of Newark arts professionals and community leaders. Each was given a grant to enable them to appear at the festival.

Audible has long been a champion of Newark, where it has been headquartered since 2007, and the company works to elevate emerging creators through a range of programs that amplify underrepresented voices around the world.

“As the leading storytelling company and one of the largest employers of creative talent in the NYC Metro area, Audible has always been committed to celebrating the creative community,” says Aisha Glover, Global Head of Urban Innovation at Audible. “The Audible Showcase Stage will highlight the vast creative talent right here in Newark, and we’re thrilled to share their dynamic performances with festival goers.”

“Newark is an international city of the arts and we wanted to curate a snapshot of all the different cultures that make up our city,” says Marcy DePina, Executive Director of the Newark City Parks Foundation, which was chosen to produce the Audible Showcase Stage in the park. “There are so many unique cultural expressions in Newark. Our goal was to highlight that diversity and make it really welcoming for everyone to come and take part.”

‘Official Selection’ artists to be featured at the ‘Audible Showcase Stage’ include:

Trinidadian singer, storyteller and activist Choy

    Vocalist and songwriter Aja Moyé

    Newark-native violinist J Read

Performances will be interspersed with sets by local turntablists including Newark’s DJ Wallah, DJ Shell Spin, DJ Sienna Chanel as well as hosts Alexandra Hill, Unicorn151 and Kitab Rollins.

In the event of inclement weather, performances will be held in the Newark Public Library’s Centennial Hall across the street from the park.

Through a first-ever collective and collaborative effort, a coalition of Newark organizations including NJPAC, Newark Parks Foundations, the Newark Arts and Education District, Newark Alliance, Newark Arts, The Newark Museum of Art, the Newark Public Library, FORSA Media, SO FRESH Fest, Lauren LeBeaux Lifestyles and Audible worked to offer a range of additional complementary festival events held near or adjacent to the ‘Audible Showcase Stage’ so festival-goers can spend an entire day (or weekend) at events within easy walking distance to Harriet Tubman Square.

  • ‘EVENING OF ROSES’ HONORS PIONEER OF INTERFAITH BRIDGE-BUILDING

Sr. Rose Thering (Credit: Courtesy shu.edu)
    • By Mabel Pais

“I know the power of teachers. It is my deepest wish that teachers in our public and parochial schools, with scholarship assistance, will be able to enroll in Jewish-Christian Studies at Seton Hall University to stem the tide of ignorance in our schools and in society.” — Sister Rose Thering, O.P., Ph.D.

In honor of Sr. Rose Thering, Catholic nun-pioneer of promoting understanding and tolerance of Jewish-Christian faiths, Seton Hall University celebrates the 30th anniversary of the fundraising event in memory of her. The Annual Gala ‘Evening of Roses’ takes place on June 18, 2024 at 6 pm at the Seton Hall University’s Bethany Hall, 400 South Orange Avenue, South Orange, New Jersey 07079.

    HONOREES

This year, Seton Hall University honors

    Daniel Mendelsohn, author of the international bestseller ‘The Lost: A Search for Six of Six Million,’ with the Sister Rose Thering Fund Award in the Humanities and Holocaust Literature;

Cantor Perry Fine of Temple Beth Shalom in Livingston, NJ for his work in interfaith outreach with the inaugural Sister Rose Thering Fund Clergy Award, and

Twenty Sister Rose Thering Fund Founding Supporters, women and men who worked closely and personally with Sister Rose to establish Seton Hall’s Fund. Get the complete list  at events.shu.edu/event/33510-evening-of-roses-gala-30th-anniversary.

‘The Evening of Roses’ is the major fundraising vehicle for the Sister Rose Thering Fund for Jewish-Christian Studies. Its aim is to promote the Fund’s work by honoring outstanding scholars in the field of Jewish-Christian relations and conferring honorary Doctor of Humane Letters as well as Humanitarian of the Year awards upon individuals who have demonstrated outstanding compassion, altruism, and courage in various endeavors. In past years, honorary degrees have been bestowed upon Professor Elie Wiesel, Cynthia Ozick, Sister Rose Thering, Judith H. Banki and Sir Martin Gilbert, Nechama Tec, Theodore Bikel and Dr. Eugene Fisher.

Each ’Evening of Roses’ event has attracted between 300-500 attendees whose participation and financial support have been rewarded by an outstanding program followed by a reception. Honored guests offer to sign copies of their most recent publications or serenade all with a song, such as Seton Hall’s friend Theodore Bikel has done.

    Sister Rose Thering

“Children, our young people, are our future. A major challenge of our times is to face resolutely the responsibility to future generations.”

Sister Rose Thering (1920-2006), a nun of the Dominican Order, was a lifelong activist who fought anti-Semitism within the Catholic Church.

Sister Rose Thering, in her doctoral research (1957-1961), did the pioneer investigation/examination of the most widely used Catholic religion teaching materials to see how we taught about other faith, ethnic, and racial groups.  It was a self-study that dealt primarily with our teachings about Jews and Judaism.

A basic summary was taken to Vatican II (the Second Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church) during the deliberations before the issuance of the Vatican document Nostra Aetate: Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions in 1965.  The document caused considerable debate at Vatican II but was finally passed on the last day of deliberations.  The 15 Latin lines of text have had a deep and lasting effect on how Jews are viewed by the Catholic Church and remain strongly fixed in church teachings to this day.

Sister Rose was very active in building bridges between Jews and Christians.  When asked why she did this, her immediate response was: “Because an understanding and an appreciation of Jews and Judaism and the State of Israel helps me personally.  I hope and pray to become a better person, a better Christian.”

‘Sister Rose’s Passion,’ a 39-minute documentary film on her life, won an award at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2004 and was nominated for an Academy Award in 2005.

Sr. Rose spent more than 40 years at Seton Hall University – teaching, speaking, developing programs, shepherding groups of religious and lay people to the Holy Land where she traveled more than 54 times.

Sister Rose Thering passed away at her convent, The Siena Center of the Racine Dominicans in Wisconsin, on May 6, 2006.

The Sister Rose Endowment for Holocaust and Jewish-Christian Studies honors her for her belief in the power of teachers to impart knowledge and understanding to young people.

    NJPAC COMMEMORATES JUNETEENTH

    HBCU graduates (Credit: njpac.org)
    • By Mabel Pais

The New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC – njpac.org) hosts an in-person Standing in Solidarity event on Monday, June 17, 2024, at 6PM in honor of the Juneteenth holiday. This program marks the conclusion of the ‘Standing in Solidarity’ season, a series of Social Justice conversations often paired with a ‘PSEG True Diversity Film Series’ screening.

Juneteenth, or Juneteenth National Independence Day, is a federal holiday in the United States. It is celebrated annually on June 19 to commemorate the official ending of slavery in the United States.

“NJPAC is committed to bringing our community together to talk about the issues that are genuinely important to all of us,” says NJPAC President and CEO John Schreiber. “Both as virtual gatherings and, now, as really meaningful in-person events, the Arts Center’s ‘Standing in Solidarity’ conversations have been a unique opportunity for so many of us to learn, listen deeply and find common ground.”

The documentary ‘Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities’ (Firelight Films, 2018) is the ‘PSEG True Diversity Film’ and will be screened in NJPAC’s Chase Room at 6PM. Following the screening, a panel of prominent leaders — all graduates of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) — will discuss the cultural, economic and social impact of HBCUs.

    PANELISTS

The panel will be moderated by Calvin Ledford Jr., president of the PSEG Foundation and director of PSEG Corporate Social Responsibility.

“In the heart of our nation’s story lies the profound legacy of historically Black colleges and universities. HBCUs exemplify hope, progress and opportunity,” says Ledford.  “As a proud alum of Hampton University, I am honored to moderate a panel discussion alongside fellow HBCU graduates. I look forward to exploring the impactful legacy of these institutions on American history, culture and identity. Together, let us celebrate Juneteenth and embrace the pivotal role HBCUs play in shaping generations and our nation.”

Members of the panel include Brielle Lewis, director of Sponsorship Strategy & Activation at Prudential Financial, Dr. Karma Brown Warren, medical leader and phlebologist at Metro Vein Centers, Inc., and Mayor of the City of Newark, The Honorable Ras J. Baraka.

“It is in relationships with both people and ideas that we define ourselves, and from there hone our dreams, and shape our world. That is why the educational, social and cultural dynamics of higher education institutions, and in particular, HBCUs, are so critical to America’s sound and solid foundation in peace and prosperity,” says Mayor Baraka. “Just as Juneteenth broke the last chain in the bond of slavery, HBCUs release the free expression of African American students as they claim their identities and forge their path forward.”

Following the panel conversation, the Juneteenth festivities will move to the Hahne Building (54 Halsey St.) for an afterparty, starting at 8:45PM, hosted by Heritage Hall. Heritage Hall is the site of the pop-up photography exhibit “HBCU Experience” produced by students from MENTOR Newark. The interactive exhibit is designed to share the culture of the schools and show off HBCU pride.
