  • Beat bad breath with yoga

    Beat bad breath with yoga

Your company is hosting a party for a recent success and every employee and board member is going to be there. You are dressed in your best evening gown, matching accessories and a pair of gorgeous stilettos to compliment your look. People are admiring and complementing your look. Everything is perfect, until you notice that your breath has started to smell bad; perhaps because of that starter you just had! People notice this too and keep the conversations short and move away quickly. What could’ve been a perfect evening to impress your bosses quickly turns into a disastrous one. We all have experienced similar situations in our life. Bad breath, clinically known as Halitosis, is an unlucky charm that makes you uncomfortable and kills your confidence. Though most would feel that lack of brushing the teeth properly is the only reason for bad breath, this may not be entirely true.

Bad breath may be caused due to:
    – irregular food habits, – improper digestion, – less intake of water and type of food consumed. Researchers believe that people with dry mouth are more prone to bad breath. Smoking and alcohol fouls your breath too. The white deposition on the tongue also serves as home to a lot of bacteria and thus fouls your breath. While oral hygiene should definitely be given priority, you may find that bad breath keeps coming back no matter what measures you adopt to counter it. At such times, one must look at options such as Yoga. Though yoga may be perceived as a physical workout regime, it also helps overcome problems such as bad breath. It also helps calm the mind and reduces stress. A few simple postures that will help you beat that bad breath:

    Kapal Bhati pranayama
Sit comfortably with your spine erect. Place your hands on the knees, palms open to the sky and breathe in. As your breath out, pull your stomach in. As you relax the navel and abdomen, the breath flows back into your lungs automatically. Repeat this for 20 times. Sheetali pranayama (Cooling breath) Stick your tongue out and curl the sides of the tongue upward towards the center of the tongue. Breathe in through the mouth, hold the breath and slowly exhale through the nose. Repeat 5 to 10 times. Sheetkari pranayama (Cooling breath) Close the right nostril with your right thumb. Exhale completely through the left nostril and then breathe in through the left nostril. Close the left nostril with your little ring finger and exhale through the right. Repeat 5 to 10 times.

Yoga Mudra Sit in Padmasana or Sukhasana. While keeping your eyes closed, bend your body forward until your forehead touches the ground. Relax in this position and then return back to the starting position. Repeat this 5 to 10 times. Simhasana (Lion pose) Kneel down on the yoga mat and place your right foot below the left buttock and vice versa. Place your hands on the knees, spread out the fingers and lean forward. The weight of the body should be on the hands while the hands remain straight. Open your mouth and stick the tongue out. Eyes should be wide open and face muscles tense. Your gaze should be fixed on the tip of the nose or at the center of the eyebrows.

No reason for Anna Hazare to go back to Ramlila Maidan: Kiran Bedi

NEW YORK (TIP): While Anna has been proposing a return to Ram Lila Maidan to relaunch his agitation for the Jan Lokpal Bill on the first day of the winter session of Parliament if the government of India failed to bring one by that time, his colleague and one time close confidante Magsaysay Award winner Kiran Bedi believes that there is no reason for the anti-corruption crusader to go back to Ramlila grounds to re-launch his movement till the matter is pending before the Supreme Court. Asserting that this does not reflect “any differences” with Hazare, the former police officer said that she and other close associates of the anti-corruption crusader are trying their best to convince him not to go back to Ramlila Maidan. His health is another reason for such an approach, Bedi said. “Once the matter is before the Supreme Court, I do not see a reason for going back to the Ramlila Ground at the moment, because the Indian Parliament could say we are already responding to the Supreme Court, why do not we wait for the Supreme Court verdict,” Bedi told media in New Delhi. This is quite contrary to the views of Hazare.

His colleague and one time close confidant Magsaysay Award winner Kiran Bedi does not agree with his view and says there is no reason for Anna to go back to Ramlila grounds to re-launch his movement till the matter is pending before the Supreme Court

At a New York reception hosted in his honor on August 27, Hazare had said that he would go back to agitation at Ramlila grounds on the first day of the winter session of Parliament, if the Union Government does not bring the Lokpal in the current session. “While he continues to have the determination he has, but all his wellwishers including people from his own village are telling Anna, we can’t risk your health anymore, because you are more precious. He had long term consequences of 10 day fast,” Bedi insisted. “It is not difference of opinion. It is again back to him to say Anna we can’t do this; you can’t continue to sacrifice like this. Even his village people are continuing to persuade him that you can’t do this now, let’s wait for the Supreme Court decision. “I have personally told Anna, this is not the right time, we need to wait for the decision of the Supreme Court. You can’t risk your health now. It is not difference of opinion. It is two approaches. One approach is concern for Anna’s health and secondly waiting correctly till the Supreme Court decides on it, we need not come in. But if still Anna insists, we all would be behind him,” Bedi said

    TULSI (HOLY BASIL )

Tirupathi, has established that the TULSI Plant exhales Ozone, the molecules of which contain three atoms of oxygen in place of ordinary atmospheric oxygen which has only two atoms in each molecule. According to reports published by the Vallabhbhai Patel Vriksha Sansthan, Delhi, an oily substance found in TULSI actively destroys Tuberculosis bacilli. TULSI is said to contain about 27 minerals and is used extensively in the preparation of more than 300 Ayurvedic and Homoeopathic medicines.

It destroys disease-carrying germs and is used in the treatment of several ailments including Asthma, Tuberculosis, Leprosy etc. It also purifies blood and improves digestive system. Things exposed to the aroma of TULSI or placed near a TULSI Plant will not deteriorate or get spoiled quickly. A dead body too does not decay rapidly if placed among TULSI Plants. Perhaps the ritual of putting TULSI leaves in the mouth of a dying person or keeping a TULSI Plant near a dead body originated on the basis of this fact. There is also a tradition of placing TULSI leaves in foods and drinks that have to be stored during solar and lunar eclipses.

The bacteriocidal properties and electrical energy of the leaves protect the stored victuals from the adverse effects of the rays of the eclipsed luminaries. TULSI has a salutary effect not only on the body, but also on the thoughts, tendencies and inclinations of the mind. It is stated in the Padma Purana, Uttara Khanda, that wherever the aroma of TULSI is carried by the wind, it purifies the atmosphere and frees all animals from all baser tendencies. TULSI helps not only in curing physical ailments but also in promoting purity, sanctity and spiritual progress. A TULSI Plant is sure to act as a centre for spreading positive and ennobling thoughts. In view A Tulsi Plant (Holy Basil) at the doorstep of the house or in its vicinity keeps the atmosphere pure, supplies oxygen in greater quantities, ensures the health of its occupants and keeps it free from poisonous insects. The contribution of the TULSI Plant to the purification of polluted air is unrivalled. It possesses bacteriocidal properties. The emanations from TULSI Plants are in fact fatal to mosquitoes. NEW YORK, NY (TIP):Audit Discovers Trip Dangers, Moldy Locker Rooms, and Little Evidence Water Quality Was Properly Tested at Park Facilities

New York City Comptroller John C. Liu announced August 23 that a new audit has found the Parks Department is not doing enough to remove hazards and ensure safe water conditions at the City’s public pools. “Our kids shouldn’t be swimming at their own risk,” Comptroller Liu said. “The Parks Department was already aware of many of the pool hazards we found in this audit but was far too slow to fix them. The agency needs to ensure we have clean and safe pools for our children.”

    Surprise Inspections Find Problems

In July and August 2012, Comptroller Liu’s auditors made surprise visits to 39 pools in the five boroughs and found dozens of problems at 29 of them. The hazards included slip or trip dangers such as exposed metal sticking up from poolside decks, loose pool ladders, latches missing from gates to children’s wading pools, moldy locker rooms, and, in one case, an unsecured gate leading to an empty abandoned pool with a diving platform. When the auditors returned in July 2013 to follow up on 38 of the most serious problems, they found that many remained unrepaired, including a missing latch on the gate to the Dry Dock children’s pool in Manhattan. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene had previously issued violations to the agency for the missing latch in 2011 and 2012. But instead of fixing the broken gate, which created a hazard for small children, the Parks Department assigned a lifeguard to stand by the gate.

    Water Quality Tests

The Parks Department doesn’t keep records noting whether water quality tests are done as required, particularly for children’s pools. The agency requires hourly water tests, increasing to every halfhour when the air temperature rises above 80 degrees. Supervisors must sign off on the tests to verify that proper water quality testing was conducted. However, when auditors asked for water quality records for 10 days at 30 sampled pools, the agency came up short. There should have been 2,288 signatures documenting water quality tests on the daily reports, but 43 percent of them were missing. Children’s pools lacked the most. Of the 736 signatures that should have been on the daily reports at 10 children’s pools, 98 percent were missing. At five of the 10 kids’ pools, there were no signatures. In one instance, at Wagner pool in Manhattan, auditors saw a worker trying to test chlorine levels in the children’s wading pool using water from the intermediate pool. Auditors asked him to redo the test and found high chlorine levels in the wading pool. Staff then evacuated children from the pool, which was closed for the remainder of the auditors’ visit. The Parks Department oversees 93 pools at 66 facilities. Before the start of each season, the agency must inspect pools and correct any hazardous conditions it finds.

IRAQ SEEKS INDIAN HELP TO REBUILD COUNTRY

NEW DELHI (TIP): Iraq on Aug 23 invited Indian business to participate in the rebuilding of the warweary country which is moving toward normalcy. “India’s experience will help, we are depending much on India’s experience,” visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Kamil al-Maliki said. “Iraq is in the process of rebuilding its democratic system,” he added. The Iraqi premier was addressing a meeting of Iraqi and Indian business leaders organized by industry chambers Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry ( FICCI) and Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India ( Assocham). This is the first visit by an Iraqi Prime Minister to India, and during the trip, the two countries will sign four agreements. Two of the agreements deal with energy and water management. The other two are at the diplomatic level for enabling consultation between both countries on foreign affairs and training of diplomats at the foreign services institutions of both the countries. Iraq is now India’s second largest supplier of crude oil. The agreement on energy cooperation is expected to be of significant upgrading of energy relationship from a buyer-seller one to a “strategic engagement”, sources said.

  • A DREAM BEDROOM

    A DREAM BEDROOM

Themes are no longer restricted to just styling up an individual, but have become an intrinsic part of many homes. Creating interiors on a theme that reflects one’s lifestyle and taste is becoming increasing popular with people getting more and more involved in home decor. In fact, one of the most popular trends in home decor today is ‘theme bedrooms’. You can design a ‘zen’ bedroom, or a classical or retro bedroom – the options are plenty; all that is required is your imagination and creativity. Says interior designer Shilpi Dokahia, “Themed rooms have existed for quite sometime now.

However, they have become extremely popular of late, as people are becoming more lifestyle and fashion conscious. Just like they know what to wear to work, to sleep, to party, they know how to decorate their personal spaces. They no longer believe in living only for others, and have started living according to their taste and preferences.” Agrees interior designer Mallika Thakker, “Creating a theme bedroom allows you to make your own dream zone to escape into. It creates a different destination, and gives us a break from the everyday mundane world that we live in. One can extend their imagination and creativity to no limit to personalise their bedroom.

It is the room, where one spends a lot of time in, and the surroundings contribute a lot to the comfort.” Just like changing fashion, people are more clued into changing interior trends too. They know that interior is bold or subtle, ethnic or contemporary, theatrical or classy, Mediterranean or South African, colour coordinated or contrasted and so on. So is the awareness that the moment you enter a house, it shouts out a specific theme, either through the wall colours or wallpapers, or through the accessories like the lamp shades, upholstery, cushion covers and carpets too.

Interior designer Akshika Luthra Hemnani attributes this to the excessive travelling that people do these days. “The world is becoming smaller and smaller, and so people are getting exposed to a lot new styles and themes. They are exposed to varied eye-catching home decors at the places they travel to, and want to replicate this in their own space, especially the bedroom, which is an intimate place.” The Zen theme, Retro theme, Moroccan theme, the evergreen Classical and Earthy themes are few of the most popular themes today. In fact, rather than doing up the entire room on a theme, people are using accessories to create theme look. Explains interior designer Bindiya Chabbria, “Interiors has now become subjective. It’s got to do a lot with your own taste and so emphasising on accessories for a theme is the best option. Not only is it easy to create a theme for your room using accessories, it can be changed from time to time making it affordable and cost effective. So, using cushions, carpets, curtains and even upholstery, you can give a different look to your room.”

  • GET RID OF BODY ODOR

    GET RID OF BODY ODOR

While everyone perspires, only some of us sweat excessively and that is when it becomes a problem. Excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis, may be hereditary. It could also be caused due to hormonal imbalance, high emotional excitement, spicy foods, exercise, or stress. Here are a few things you could follow to ease out the problem.

    Flush out toxins with water

You may have heard this many times before, but water not only cleanses your body, it also prevents underarm odor. In addition, having at least two showers is hygienic and will help combat excessive sweating and get rid of the offensive odor.

    Wear the right clothes

Wearing cotton clothes helps your skin to breathe and you can deal better with excessive sweating. Avoid fabrics that are likely to create irritation and heat up the skin, causing excessive sweating.

    Lime and lemony

Lime helps you reduce sweating, prevent body odor and bleach your under arm. You could rub one half of a lime (not too ripe) on your armpits. You may feel mild irritation. However, if you are suffering from rashes, avoid using lime.

    Spray on some freshness

Cans of antiperspirants and deodorants do help to some extent in keeping body odor at bay, but it may not hold true for everyone. Antiperspirants usually work by clogging the pores, which stops sweat from reaching the surface of your skin. Though they help get rid of perspiration almost immediately, the chemicals in them could cause side-effects like irritation and discolored skin.

    Lose weight and minimize sweating

Start eating healthy and lose weight as excess weight leads to excessive sweating. If your weight is already normal, you need to include more fibre to your diet and avoid spices. This will help you to flush away all the toxins from your body.

Try vinegar to combat the problem

You may be surprised, but apply vinegar on your armpits before sleeping at night and let it dry naturally. Wash it off the next morning. Applying apple cider on your armpits can also help solve the problem of excessive sweating gradually..

  • MEN MORE PRONE TO SKIN CANCER

MEN MORE PRONE TO SKIN CANCER

Anew study has found that asthma sufferers, who are frequently exposed to heavy traffic pollution or smoke from wood fire heaters, experience a significant worsening of symptoms. The University of Melbourne led study is the first of its kind to assess the impact of traffic pollution and wood smoke from heaters on middle-aged adults with asthma. The results revealed adults who suffer asthma and were exposed to heavy traffic pollution experienced an 80 per cent increase in symptoms and those exposed to wood smoke from wood fires experienced an 11 per cent increase in symptoms.

Asthma affects more than 300 million people worldwide and is one of the most chronic health conditions. Dr John Burgess of the School of Population Health at the University of Melbourne and a co-author on the study said “it is now recommended that adults who suffer asthma should not live on busy roads and that the use of old wood heaters should be upgraded to newer heaters, to ensure their health does not worsen.” Traffic exhaust is thought to exacerbate asthma through airway inflammation. Particles from heavy vehicles exhaust have been shown to enhance allergic inflammatory responses in sensitised people who suffer asthma.

  • BEAT THAT BELLY BULGE

    BEAT THAT BELLY BULGE

    Eat asparagus

It’s rich in potassium, which helps regulate the fluid balance in your body, keeping bloat at bay. High-potassium foods include bananas, cantaloupe, mangoes, spinach, tomatoes and nuts. But asparagus also contains an amino acid called asparagine that acts as a diuretic to flush excess liquid out of your system.

    Slow down!

Eat slowly and chew carefully. This will stimulate all your digestive juices. When food isn’t broken down sufficiently, it can ferment in the gut, causing bloating. Also, never eat on the run or while standing up. Sit down, but straighten your spine – slumping makes it harder for blood to reach your digestive organs. Avoid large or late-night meals. Go for a walk after dinner to help digestion.

    No drinking while eating

Leave a 20-minute gap – before and after – between eating and drinking fluids. Liquid can dilute the stomach acid needed to break down food. This can lead to poorly digested food fermenting and causing bloating. Many herbal teas can help. Try fennel or spearmint.

    Eat real bread

Most (95 per cent) commercial breads are products of industrial process. Many people are sensitive to the enzymes and flour-improving agents used in these kinds of bread. Unfortunately, these don’t have to be listed because they are classified as ‘processing aids’. If you suffer bloating after eating bread, opt for organic, artisan or sourdough bread.

    Beware of artificial sugar

Some people have difficulty digesting artificial sweeteners (especially sorbitol, found in many sugar-free sweets and gums), which can cause gas and diarrhoea. Because sorbitol isn’t actually digested, it remains in your digestive system where bacteria effectively ‘picnic’ on it. One waste product of this feeding frenzy is hydrogen gas, which causes flatulence, stomach aches and bloating.

    No fizzy drinks

Carbonated drinks (including diet ones) can cause gas to get trapped in your stomach. The fizz is due to carbon dioxide gas bubbled into the drink. As an alternative, drink water flavoured with lemon, lime, or cucumber. If you’re feeling gassy and bloated, avoid tea and coffee as caffeine can cause indigestion. Opt for ginger, peppermint and fennel teas.

    Watch your salt intake

Too much salt – often contained in highly processed foods and ready meals – adds extra sodium to body fluids, stalling the mechanism that pushes water out of your cells. Consequently, the cells plump up with water, causing the stomach to feel full. Most adults need 1,600mg of sodium a day – the equivalent of about 4 grams of salt, less than a level teaspoon. Replace salt in cooking with pepper, herbs, lemon and balsamic vinegar.

    Try probiotics

Taking a probiotic supplement can reduce bloating. Choose a supplement over probiotic drinks or yoghurts as these often contain a lot of sugar. Look for one that contains at least 5-10 billion active organisms and includes lactobacillus and bifidobacterium cultures. Include probiotic foods in your diet to help feed the good bacteria in your gut. Try Jerusalem artichoke, chicory root, garlic, leek, onions, sauerkraut, asparagus, banana, oats, apples and barley.

    Don’t have fruit for dessert

When eaten at the end of a meal, fruit can cause bloating. It’s best eaten separately. Certain fruits have a beneficial effect on the gut. Fresh papaya and pineapple have natural digestive enzymes – papain and bromelain, respectively – that aid digestion and alleviate wind.

    Try a little TLC

  • INDIA CELEBRATES 66TH ANNIVERSARY OF INDEPENDENCE

INDIA CELEBRATES 66TH ANNIVERSARY OF INDEPENDENCE

Independent India is 66 years old today, as is Pakistan. Both countries got their Independence from British rule on August 14/15, 1947. Pakistan celebrates August 14 as its Independence Day. Mohammed Ali Jinnah was Pakistan’s first Governor- General and the main driving force for the formation of that country. Jawaharlal Nehru was India’s first Prime Minister but Mahatma Gandhi is considered the father of the nation.

Both Jinnah and Gandhi died soon after their countries’ independence, but Nehru remained to guide India. In Pakistan, an elected government has recently given way to another democratically-elected, an unprecedented devolution for Pakistan, bedeviled as it has been with coups and long bouts of military rule. Indeed, a disastrous army dictatorship, that of the bumbling General Yahya Khan, led to a humiliating defeat at the hands of India, the break-up of Pakistan and the creation of Bangladesh.

Fortunately, India has not broken up, though the doomsayers predicted that it would, since it was much more diverse than Pakistan, with more languages, communities and faiths that threatened to pull it apart. Pakistan imagined that religion was the glue that would bind it together. It was wrong. India’s democracy proved to be a much stronger binding force than religion. First, there was the revolt of the Nagas in the northeast who wanted an independent Nagaland.

Despite the continuing unrest in the region, many former rebels have become elected leaders. Similarly, in Tamil Nadu, in the south, there was a powerful separatist movement, the demands of which were much more radical than those of the Bengalis in East Pakistan. Yet, the Tamil separatists moderated their demands once they were elected to power – and got them – whereas East Pakistan was forced to rise up in revolt when it was denied its representative rights.

Democracy has kept India united; the lack of it broke up Pakistan. India has, of course, had other serious divisive threats, mainly in Punjab and the State of Jammu and Kashmir. In Punjab, Indira Gandhi made a fatal error by sending in troops into Amritsar’s Golden Temple, the holiest shrine of the Sikhs. Her advisers told her that the army would clear the Sikh militants, who were holed up in the shrine, in no time at all with little loss of life.

And she would be seen as upholding the unity of the country against terrorists. Her advisers were grievously wrong. It took the army two days and nights to defeat the heavily-armed and well-trained terrorists. Hundreds of Sikh militants, soldiers and innocent pilgrims (who were caught in the crossfire) were killed in the fighting (the exact toll has never been released by the Indian authorities). Indira Gandhi paid for the blunder with her life, when two of her Sikh bodyguards gunned her down in her garden.

Eventually, the traumatized Sikh community returned to the mainstream, the election of a Sikh, the gentle and upright Dr Manmohan Singh, as Prime Minister being symbolic of the change. Again, democracy had provided the healing touch and rescued India. Meanwhile, Kashmir had also gone up in flames, thanks partly due to a rigged election and corrupt misgovernance. Kashmir remains one of India’s major unresolved problems and the main sticking point in better ties between India and Pakistan.

So, is India’s glass half full, or half empty? The empty part relates to insufficient progress in two main areas: Education and health. India’s literacy rate is still only a little over 70 per cent, which means that over 300 million Indians, mostly girls, cannot read or write. And the expectancy of life – the surest indicator of health – is still less than 70 years. Countries like China, Indonesia and even Sri Lanka, which were behind India in these social parameters six decades ago, have done better than India.

Where the glass is half full is in the rapid economic growth India has made in the past two decades, next only to China’s, creating a middle class of around 300 million Indians. India has become a giant in the information and technology (IT) areas and a major base for outsourcing jobs and skills for major western multinational companies. Indian companies like the Tatas and Birlas have also successfully ventured abroad. A quarter century ago, India did not figure among the nations that mattered in the world.

It now matters and Indians can justifiably be proud of that. Major challenges remain, but they can hold their heads up high, in India and abroad. The same, sadly, cannot be said for Pakistan. However, with a stable democratic government in power and the army in the background, it may be about to finally turn the corner. On August 15, 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru made perhaps his most eloquent speech. He spoke about his nation stepping out “from the old to the new” and of India’s “tryst with destiny”. That tryst still needs to be fulfilled.

  • CHALLENGES BEFORE INDIA, THE POTENTIAL ECONOMIC SUPERPOWER OF THE 21st CENTURY

CHALLENGES BEFORE INDIA, THE POTENTIAL ECONOMIC SUPERPOWER OF THE 21st CENTURY

Twenty first century belongs to Asia and India is potentially one of strongest contender for emerging as an economic superpower. This opportunity window is there for the asking but will it happen or not is the question, the entire Indian citizenry is holding its breath for. Happening of this miracle depends totally on the wisdom, vision, far sight and honesty of purpose of the Indian leadership.

There is no doubt about the wisdom of the men at the top but sadly majority of their actions are guided by their baser instincts like lust for gaining power and sticking to it by fair means or foul. This more often than not results in their actions leading simply to vote catching rhetoric in stead of furthering the cause of India’s march to prosperity and status of economic superpower.

The economic superpowers/giants of today are at that position not by a stroke of luck but because of the ability of their leaders to guide the destiny of those nations in the right manner.Mind you at the turn of the 20th century these countries were economically perhaps worse off than where India is today. This does not imply that it should take India something like five or six decades to realize this potential of economic superpower.

As a matter of fact, India should be galloping on the road to prosperity because it does not have to tread on the same beaten path of science, engineering and technology evolution unless and until it is foolish enough to experience reinventing of wheel all by itself. There is many a slip between the cup and the lip. There are many pitfalls on the road to becoming an economic giant.

India must learn from the experience of others and try to nip these pitfalls at the earliest. The challenges that need to be looked into and overcome for realizing what is there for the asking. The first and foremost is curbing the menace of corruption and black money. In fact it is corruption and corruption alone which is blowing away Indian dream of getting prosperous. The country must understand that corruption and black money is the biggest drag on its economy and is eating into all the good work being attempted by governments in a very big way.

There cannot be a substitute for corruption mitigation and good governance – the biggest growth engines for Indian economy. The present economic downturn and melt down in global economy is a result of overdoing of social welfare by those countries and if they could not sustain with excesses of social welfare schemes there is no way the Indian economy in its very infancy can pull off this miracle. In fact social welfare schemes have been the bane of many advanced economies of the world and these include allowances to jobless, pensionary benefits, health insurance etc. to name a few.

There is no doubt that these are a must for any concerned government but all these benefits must be granted in a manner that they are self sustaining and in no case, at any point of time be a drag on the economy. India must learn from the horrid experiences of the western world and imbibe remedial measures to keep its date with the status of an economic superpower of 21st century. Reigning in population growth should be the topmost agenda of all Indian governments.

In late fifties and early sixties of last century, everyone was engrossed in the debate ‘ Is India Overpopulated ‘ and invariably one would come to the conclusion that India was certainly not overpopulated in the true economic sense as the land/mineral resources could certainly more than suffice for a population density of about 270 persons per sq. mile. Can we say the same with the present population density of about 750/ sq. mile.

India is definitely on the verge of getting overpopulated if not already overpopulated. Today we talk of the demographic dividend but after a couple of decades this dividend is going to become a curse with more and more persons joining the ranks of pensioners and enjoying these benefits for very long periods because of increasing life expectancy as a result of good medical care and facilities provided by the Indian government. While the western world grew old after becoming rich, there is every likelihood that India will grow old before getting rich if the long term impacts of population numbers and demography are not taken care of now.

Proper and out of the box management of water resources of India. comprising of perennial rivers, plenty of rainfall and underground water table. All civilizations and all prosperous geographies on our globe owe their very existence to the abundance of available water resource in their areas. Though India has been gifted by nature with a huge and well distributed water resource comprising of perennial rivers, plenty of rainfall and underground water table but the nation has not bothered to maintain it properly.

This is amply seen in the snowline moving higher and higher and the groundwater table going deeper and deeper. This being a direct result of shoddy policies of the government emanating from quest for energy security through use of fossil fuels, deforestation because of pressures of growth in population and failure to harness any substantial amount of river water, in fact a major portion of this water is allowed to go to sea.

Infrastructure is the core of all economic growth and index of a common man’s comfort and conveniences and its importance is very well understood by the planners and economists. But simply raising the rhetoric is not enough. The nation is eagerly looking forward to some concrete action which is getting sacrificed at the altar of good governance. In fact India is plagued by bad governance in road and infrastructure sector.

Energy security : If infrastructure is the core, energy security is the mother of all economic growth and much to the chagrin of all well meaning citizens of India is not only prey to bad governance but the path taken by the rulers and planners is directionless and not in sync with the futuristic realities of energy security scene all over the globe. India must draw strength from the fact that the oil rich countries have simply transformed their economies by getting the best out of their abundantly available energy source i.e. oil.

Luckily for India, it has abundant solar, wind and hydro resources and in fact many times more than the country’s likely requirements by the turn of the century. The thrust in researches and technology development should logically come from India whose needs during the next decade or two for additional power are may be 5 times its present power production. With the pluses of resource availability, massive demand and almost nothing to loose because of obsolescence of high value investments in research, technology and manufacturing infrastructure for any other power production mode, India must seize this opportunity which can be the biggest catalyst in India’s march to the status of a global superpower.

All human beings are inherently wedded to the philosophy of getting short term gains, the gains that bring reward to the person in quickest possible time. The short term solution or patchwork may appear to be lucrative for the run of the mill polity but the long term fixes are a must for India, the potential superpower of the 21st century.

Statesmen think of next generation and create opportunities, Leaders Seize opportunities that come their way, while Politicians think of next elections and fritter away these opportunities and dirty politicians simply mess up everything and this is what separates wise men from men, men from boys and boys from impudent louts in the realm of changing fate of a nation.

  • INDIA’S HIGHS AND THE LOWS

    INDIA’S HIGHS AND THE LOWS

The transition of India from a British colony to a sovereign, secular, and democratic nation was indeed historical. It was a long journey of around two decades that started with the conceptualisation of the dream in 1930 to its actual realization in 1950. A look into the journey that led to the birth of Indian Republic will make our celebrations more meaningful.

Lahore Session of the Indian National Congress The seeds of a republican nation were sowed at the Lahore session of the Indian National Congress at the midnight of 31st December 1929. The session was held under the presidency of Pt. Jawarhar Lal Nehru. Those present in the meeting took a pledge to mark January 26 as “Independence Day” in order to march towards realizing the dream of complete independence from the British. The Lahore Session paved way to the Civil Disobedience movement.

It was decided that January 26, 1930 would be observed as the Purna Swaraj (complete Independence) Day. Many Indian political parties and Indian revolutionaries from all over the country united to observe the day with honour and pride.

    Indian Constituent Assembly Meetings
The Indian Constituent Assembly, which was constituted as a result of the negotiations between the Indian leaders and members of the British Cabinet Mission, had its first meeting on December 9, 1946.The Objective of the Assembly was to give India a constitution, which would serve a lasting purpose and hence appointed a number of committees to thoroughly research the various aspects of the proposed constitution. The recommendations were discussed, debated and revised many times before the Indian Constitution was finalized and officially adopted three years later on November 26, 1949.

    Constitution came into force
Though India became a free nation on August 15, 1947, it enjoyed the true spirit of Independence on January 26, 1950 when the Constitution of India finally came into force. The Constitution gave the citizens of India the power to govern themselves by choosing their own government. Dr. Rajendra Prasad, took oath as the first President of India at the Durbar Hall in the Government House and this was followed by the Presidential drive along a five-mile route to the Irwin Stadium, where he unfurled the National Flag.

Ever since the historic day, January 26 is celebrated with festivities and patriotic fervor all around the country. The day owes its importance to the constitution of India that was adopted on this day. On this Republic Day, read what the great Constitution of India, that propounds liberal democracy, has in its store. Let’s also feel proud in pronouncing what the Preamble to our Constitution (External website that opens in a new window) says.

1971 Indo Pak War As in the 1965 Indo-Pak War, the main battles in 1971 between armoured formations was relegated to Chamb and Shakargarh sectors – located in the Western Theatre. Sporadic tank battles took place in the East Theatre, but these were one-sided battles weighed heavily in India’s favour. No action had taken place in the Punjab sector, but the South-Western sector in Rajasthan did see much activity. An offensive by the Pakistanis was blunted here solely on the use of air power.

The Indian Army had two armoured regiments and three independent armoured squadrons supporting Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Aurora’s Eastern Command’s thrust into East Pakistan. India had one T-55 tank regiment in the northern sector supporting the XXXIII Corps’ offensive in the Hilli-Bogra area, with one PT-76 regiment in the western area supporting the II Corps’ thrust.

Finally three independent armoured squadrons (one PT-76, one AMX- 13 and one Ferret armoured car) were supporting the IV Corps’ offensive from the east. Opposing them were a Pakistani armoured force of a regiment of M-24 Chafees in the Bogra area, countering India’s T-55 regiment and two squadrons of Chafeee tanks supporting the west and Dacca sectors.

When full scale hostilities began, half the tanks were either knocked out or captured by the time the Indian troops were on the outskirts of Dacca. After which the rest of the tanks were finally accounted for, as part of the surrender deal. In it’s offensive, Indian losses were heavy. At least thirty PT-76 tanks were destroyed or damaged, another four T-55s had their tracks blown up over mines.

The high loss rate among the PT-76 tanks was due to the fact that this type of tank had very thin armour plating to help assist its amphibious capabilities and was an easy target for mines. However all, but eleven, of the PT-76s were repaired after the war. The AMX-13s did not see much action and the Ferrets had no battle casualties. One very interesting situation, had the tank squadron of the 7th Light Cavalry recovering one of their own tanks lost to the Pakistan Army during the 1965 War, which was displayed at the East Bengal Regimental Center as a war trophy.

The tank was then handed to the Army Ordnance Corps, which in turn handed it back to the East Bengal Regimental Center! The Battle of Basantar took place during the 1 Corps’ offensive in the Shakargarh Sector. India employed two armoured brigades to support its offensive by three infantry divisions and the Pakistani reaction was swift. On December 16th and 17th, when Indian infantry captured certain villages at the River Basantar, Pakistan sent in an armoured brigade.

The 17 Poona Horse equipped with the Centurion tank, blunted the Pakistani armoured offensive. One particular action at Barapind saw one lone tank troop (three tanks) of the 17 Poona Horse – Indian Army take on an entire squadron of Pattons of the 13th Cavalry – Pakistan Army. When one of the tanks was hit & disabled and another tank’s gun was jammed, the troop commander, Captain V Malhotra gave the order for the last remaining tank to withdraw.

But this tank led by Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, stuck to its position and kept firing at the Pattons till the last moment when Second Lieutenant Khetarpal was hit and killed. These three tanks accounted for more than the ten tanks out of the squadron. So impressed were the Pakistanis with this action, that the Squadron Commander of Pakistan’s 13 Cavalry – Major Nissar came over to the Indian lines after the ceasefire to talk to the tank commanders who had blunted his offensive.

At the end of which, 66 Pakistani tanks were claimed as destroyed. Indian casualties were about 23 tanks, however the efforts of the EME (Electrical & Mechanical Engineers) saw to that all, but 10 of the tanks, were back on the road again.

    Period of Liberalization
The arrival of the East India Company in India caused a huge strain to the Indian economy and there was a twoway depletion of resources. The British would buy raw materials from India at cheaper rates and the finished goods were sold at higher than normal price in Indian markets. During this phase India’s share of world income declined from 22.3% in 1700 AD to 3.8% in 1952. Post Colonial Indian Economy: After India got independence from colonial rule in 1947, the process of rebuilding the economy started. For this various policies and schemes were formulated. First five year plan for the development of Indian economy came into implementation in 1952.

These Five Year Plans, started by Indian government, focused on the needs of the Indian economy. If on one hand agriculture received the immediate attention on the other hand the industrial sector was developed at a fast pace to provide employment opportunities to the growing population and to keep pace with the developments in the world. Since then the Indian economy has come a long way.

The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at factor cost, which was 2.3 % in 1951-52 reached 6.5 in the financial year 2011-2012 Trade liberalization, financial liberalization, tax reforms and opening up to foreign investments were some of the important steps, which helped Indian economy to gain momentum. The Economic Liberalization introduced by Man Mohan Singh in 1991, then Finance Minister in the government of P V Narsimha Rao, proved to be the stepping-stone for Indian economic reform movements.

To maintain its current status and to achieve the target GDP of 10% for financial year 2006-07, the Indian economy has to overcome many challenges. Challenges before Indian economy: Population explosion:The rising population is eating into the success of India. According to 2011 census of India, the population of India has crossed one billion and isgrowing at a rate of 2.11% approx. Such a vast population puts lots of stress on economic infrastructure of the nation.

Thus India has to control its burgeoning population. Poverty:As per records of National Planning Commission, 36 crore people are living below the poverty line in India in 2012. Unemployment:The increasing population is pressing hard on economic resources as well as job opportunities. Indian government has started various schemes such as Jawahar Rozgar Yojna, and Self Employment Scheme for Educated Unemployed Youth (SEEUY). But these are proving to be a drop in an ocean. Rural Urban Divide:It is said that India lies in villages, even today when there is lots of talk going about migration to cities, 70% of the Indian population still lives in villages.

There is a very stark difference in pace of rural and urban growth. Unless there isn’t a balanced development Indian economy cannot grow. These challenges can be overcome by the sustained and planned economic reforms. These include: Maintaining fiscal discipline Orientation of public expenditure towards sectors in which India is faring badly such as health and education. Introduction of reforms in labour laws to generate more employment opportunities for the growing population of India. Reorganization of agricultural sector, introduction of new technology, reducing agriculture’s dependence on monsoon by developing means of irrigation. Introduction of financial reforms including privatization of some public sector banks.

The extend of corruption has increased to such an extend that, any person joining political parties does have an intention of making easy and fast money within the shortest period of time. If all the amounts that have been disclosed, for every scam till date is pooled up, I guess , India is most richest country and the power and strength She holds could not be compared with any other.

A few of the top scams that have taken place since the year 1947 is discussed here, just to bring to the notice of the public where we stand and how things are working. Let us get from the latest to the oldest.

According to the CAG (Comptroller and Auditor General of India), the Indian Government was accused of allocating coal blocks, in an in-efficient manner during the period 2004-2009.

The reason for this allegation was because, the Government had the authority to check on the allocation of coal blocks by a process of competitive bidding, but they failed to do so, resulting in lower payment by the public sector enterprises and the private firms. According to the CAG report, an amount of near to Rs. 185,591 crore (USD $ 35.08 billion) was lost to the government because of this improper screening in procedures, which might have happened due to bribery is what studies says. The issuing of licenses began in 2008; however it came to public attention when the Indian Income tax Department conducted an investigation on the political campaigner Niira Radia.

The Supreme Court on February 2012 declared cancellation of all licenses issued in 2008 during the tenure of A. Raja, who was the minister of telecom then. There were about 122 licenses that were cancelled. The actual plan for awarding the licenses was on a first come first served policy. However, A. • FINDING MR. RIGHT POST 30

    FINDING MR. RIGHT POST 30

Call it ambition, financial stability or plain indifference, today’s career woman believes that there’s more to life than marriage. That said, most of them are not ready to go the husband-kitchen-babies way until their early 30s. Good enough, we say! But the point is what happens when they set out on a mission to find Mr. Right after crossing 30 years of age? With more and more women putting off marriage thanks to busy careers in their 20s, they find it extremely difficult to meet someone once they are ready to take the plunge.

By their early 30s, these women are typically independent with a sound bank balance, and have a fair idea about what to expect from marriage. As relationship counsellor Seema Hingoranny rightly puts it, “Women in their 30s usually have too many expectations from their life partners. So when they set out looking for a man, they sometimes tend to become irrational.

They don’t want to settle for anything less, and therefore start forming rigid opinions about them.” In the quest for someone who is absolutely perfect, many women are rendered helpless and feeling guilty at a later stage of their lives. Also after a point, these women don’t want to deal with just monetary expectations (read: salary). Reports suggest that today’s women, those with exceptionally successful careers, find themselves in a tricky situation while hunting for a soulmate.

The going gets tough when they encounter men who get intimated by their hefty pay packages. Sushmita Ganguly, an entrepreneur, who is 33 years old, is yet to come across a man who earns more than her. “I may have missed the boat, but then I wouldn’t have had this life if I had not worked hard. Today, my parents want to see me settled with a man who can match up to my standards.

The problem is that none of the guys I meet these days want a woman who earns more than them!” There are several others who are most unlikely to get hitched with a man just for his bank balance. Popular filmmaker Zoya Akhtar, 39 in an interview said that she doesn’t need a man to take care of her needs. “For me a guy must be passionate and ambitious about his profession.

His hefty pay package is not that crucial for me.” Also, a sense of achievement sometimes comes in the way of women who are in search of the perfect guy for themselves. “Being successful also means that you are in a comfortable zone where you can experience the very best of life. In a situation like this, you tend to get choosy about who your future husband is going to be. At 35, my fear is whether I will get to meet the right guy.

And with divorce cases on the rise, it only gets worse,” says Karishma Agrawal, an entrepreneur. She feels that it is in our country that people tend to equate marriage to social status; Karishma is however optimistic about the fact that Indian society will change for good.

Tips for Finding Mr Right After 30
Be reasonable while chalking out your criteria for ‘the one’. Be willing to compromise on one or two of the not so important criteria. Have rational expectations from your future husband. Expect a human being, and not someone without flaws. Hear your parents out (you don’t necessarily have to accept everything they say). They come with experience for a reason. Don’t rush. Being desperate doesn’t help.

  • GET A FLAT BELLY

    GET A FLAT BELLY

In everyday life we don’t fret about some loose stomach fat hanging over our waistbands, but festivities, weddings, and seaside vacations leave you staring at the mirror. The frustrating reality is that the midsection is one of the trickiest areas to lose fat from.

Many believe that one can lose stomach fat by simply doing a few ab crunches every day. But that’s not the truth. In reality, achieving a flat stomach is a combination of a range of factors like diet, exercise, rest, hydration, and so on. Read on for some great tips on how to lose stomach fat… Understand the science behind six pack abs for a flat belly. The simple science behind six pack abs is that they exist in everybody. It’s just when you start putting on more body fat that these abs disappear.

A combination of two major muscles transversus abdominis and rectus abdominis muscles make up what we consider to be our ‘abs’ zone. These muscles are buried under the front and side of torso mucles and exist around your midsection like a girdle. Now, if you ate a healthy diet comprising of lean proteins, balanced carbs and less, yet good, fats, you would enter a zone with minimal superficial body fat, and your muscles would become visible, resulting in six pack abs.

    Tip #1
Importance of eating lean proteins for a flat belly. First and most important is to understand that lean proteins are proteins from sources that supply little or almost negligible amount of fat. The Harvard School of Public Health notes that lean sources of protein aid in keeping the saturated fat intake at a healthy level. When you are on sources of proteins such as chicken, beans you find yourself losing body fat and at the same time giving shape to your body.

You get most of the vitamins from these sources which improve your health as well.Importance of fiber in your diet for a flat belly. Fiber is one of the most important constituents of our diet. The main function of fiber is to clean our system deep within, help propel our bowel movements and thus form the basis of detoxification of our body. Most astonishing is the fact that when we consume fiber, our body burns ample calories in the digestion process of fiber. Also fiber itself has very few calories. In short, eating lots of fiber in the form of fruits, salads and bran helps our belly to run slim with ease.

    Tip #2
Importance of staying away from fruit juices, alcohol and fruit punches for a flat belly. In general juices, alcohol and fruit punches are calorie dense and often disturb the blood sugar levels in our body. Where moderate and controlled alcohol consumption has certain beneficial effects too, fruits are best taken in their natural fiber form rather than taking them in the form of juices. Juices give your body less essential fiber, and the concentrated sugar is not the best thing for you if you are aiming for a flat belly. Eating fresh should be the mantra of healthy living.

    Tip #3
Importance of nutrient dense and good fat foods for a flat belly. Nutrient dense and good fat foods are those that have essential fatty acids and other vital nutrients in rich quantity with less calories and saturated fats. First would be something like a grilled fish. With certain essential fatty acids, proteins and less saturated oil, this is a perfect example of a nutrient dense good fat food.

Now consider a pastry. It is more than 200 calories, with a lot of saturated fat and a few essential nutrients to offer. This is something you must take very sparingly. Thus, picking items such as grilled fish or soyabean chaat will help one supply the body with essential fats, improve cardiac health and at the same time keep your body fat low to give you a perfect belly. A nutrientdense diet won’t leave you feeling hungry so aiming at a flatter belly is much easier with nutrient dense food.

    Tip #4
Importance of cardio exercises and strength training for a flat belly. All types of cardio exercise routines elevate your heart rate and keep it in the same way for extended periods of time. This results in increased consumption of oxygen, which leads to fat loss. Fat loss and stamina building are equally important. If you eat healthy and workout, your chances of achieving a flatter belly increases.

    Tip #5
Importance of water in your diet for a flat belly.Water constitutes 70% of our body. Most of our metabolic process takes place in the presence of water in our body. Thus, when we are well hydrated the basal metabolic rate of our body goes up. This would mean that our body is able to digest the food we eat in a proper manner, the food is used to burn sufficient calories required by the body and thus you end up with a nice flat belly to improve your figure

    Tip #6
Push ups. Place yourself face down with the palms on the floor. Place the palms wider than the shoulder-width, arms extended, legs straight and feet together or slightly apart. Keep the neck, back & hips aligned and abdominals contracted. Do not arch the back downwards or upwards. Keep it flat like a table top. Bend the elbows outwards and bring the chest close to the floor. This is the initial position. Push back upwards till the arms extend completely and feel the contraction in the chest muscles.

  • BIG BREAKFASTS, NOT DINNERS HELP LOSE WEIGHT

BIG BREAKFASTS, NOT DINNERS HELP LOSE WEIGHT

People who eat their largest daily meal at breakfast time are far more likely to lose weight and have a lesser waist line circumference than those who eat a large dinner, a new study has revealed.

The research conducted by Tel Aviv University has found that that proper meal timing can make an important contribution towards managing obesity and promoting an overall healthy lifestyle Participants who ate a larger breakfast- which included a dessert item such as a piece of chocolate cake or a cookie- also had significantly lower levels of insulin, glucose, and triglycerides throughout the day, translating into a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol. Prof. Daniela Jakubowicz and her fellow researchers conducted a study in which 93 obese women were randomly assigned to one of two isocaloric groups.

Each consumed a moderate-carbohydrate, moderate-fat diet totalling 1,400 calories daily for a period of 12 weeks. The first group consumed 700 calories at breakfast, 500 at lunch, and 200 at dinner, while the second group ate a 200 calorie breakfast, 500 calorie lunch, and 700 calorie dinner. The 700 calorie breakfast and dinner included the same foods. By the end of the study, participants in the “big breakfast” group had lost an average of 17.8 pounds each and three inches off their waist line, compared to a 7.3 pound and 1.4 inch loss for participants in the “big dinner” group. According to Prof. Jakubowicz, those in the big breakfast group were found to have significantly lower levels of the hungerregulating hormone ghrelin, and showed a more significant decrease in insulin, glucose, and triglyceride levels than those in the big dinner group.
