India gets its 1st hydrogen-powered train, to run on 89-km Jind-Sonepat route

Jind (TIP): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, July 17, flagged off India’s first hydrogen-powered train connecting Jind and Sonepat from the Jind railway station, marking a major milestone in the country’s push towards clean and sustainable rail transport.
With the launch, India joins a select group of nations operating hydrogen-powered trains. The service is expected to accelerate the adoption of green mobility in the railway sector.
The train will cover the 89-km Jind-Sonipat route in about two hours, stopping at 12 intermediate stations.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Haryana Governor Ashim Kumar Ghosh and Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini were present at the flagging-off ceremony. The Prime Minister waved to passengers, including several schoolchildren on board, as the train departed from Jind railway station.
The Modi also laid the foundation stone for various development projects worth Rs 15,000 crore in Jind.
After this, the Prime Minister travelled to Chandigarh, where he inaugurated and lay the foundation stones of projects worth Rs 4,736 crore at Punjab Engineering College. The projects focus on strengthening road connectivity, healthcare facilities and educational infrastructure.
Later in the day, Modi visited Jalandhar to inaugurate and lay the foundation stones of projects worth Rs 5,470 crore and flag off the Amritsar-Varanasi Express from the redeveloped Jalandhar Cantonment railway station. The visit marks his second trip to Jalandhar in five months, with both visits centred around Dera Sachkhand Ballan, a prominent religious centre for Punjab’s large Ravidassia community.
