Birth of M.G. Ramachandran (MGR)

Marudur Gopalan Ramachandran, popularly known as M.G. Ramachandran (MGR), was born in Kandy, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). A legendary Tamil actor and founder of the AIADMK, MGR served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu from 1977 until his death in 1987. His welfare-oriented policies, including the expansion of the nutritious midday meal scheme, transformed the state’s social landscape. Revered by millions, he remains one of India’s most influential political leaders and cinema icons.

The Indian Independence Act receives Royal Assent
The Indian Independence Act, 1947, passed by the British Parliament, received Royal Assent from King George VI. The Act paved the way for the creation of the independent Dominions of India and Pakistan on August 15, 1947, ending nearly two centuries of British rule. It also provided for the partition of British India and the transfer of power to Indian leaders.
