India seeks US nod to continue Russian oil imports amid Hormuz crisis

New Delhi (TIP): India has reportedly approached the United States seeking an extension of the waiver that permits Indian refiners to continue importing Russian crude oil, as disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz enter their 75th day and intensify concerns over global energy security.
The prolonged instability in the strategically vital maritime corridor has severely impacted oil shipments, pushing crude prices higher and creating uncertainty in international energy markets. The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is one of the world’s busiest oil transit chokepoints, carrying nearly 20 per cent of global crude supplies.
According to reports, New Delhi has urged Washington to continue exemptions that allow purchases of Russian oil despite Western sanctions imposed on Moscow following the Ukraine conflict. The request comes at a time when several Asian economies are scrambling to secure alternative fuel supplies amid fears of prolonged shipping disruptions in West Asia.
India, the world’s third-largest oil importer, has significantly increased purchases of discounted Russian crude over the past few years. Russian oil now accounts for a major portion of India’s total crude imports, helping domestic refiners manage costs and maintain fuel stability despite volatile international prices.
Officials and industry experts believe that any interruption in Russian supplies could place additional pressure on India’s energy bill at a time when global freight rates and insurance costs have already surged due to the Hormuz tensions. The disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have reportedly affected tanker movements, delayed cargo deliveries and heightened fears of supply shortages across international markets. Benchmark crude prices have remained elevated amid concerns that the crisis could deepen further if geopolitical tensions continue.
Energy analysts say India’s move reflects the growing challenge faced by oil-importing nations trying to balance geopolitical considerations with domestic energy needs. For India, maintaining steady crude supplies is crucial for controlling inflation, supporting industrial growth and ensuring stable fuel availability for consumers.
While there has been no official confirmation from either New Delhi or Washington regarding the waiver extension, the issue is expected to feature prominently in ongoing diplomatic and strategic discussions between the two countries.
