Oxford vaccine shows protection against COVID-19 in monkeys: Study

Preliminary results from this research were used to facilitate the start of clinical trials of the vaccine in humans, the researchers noted

LONDON (TIP): A COVID-19 vaccine candidate developed by the University of Oxford in the UK elicits an immune response and reduces the viral load in monkeys exposed to SARS-CoV-2 virus, according to a study published in the journal Nature on Thursday, July 30.

The researchers from National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in the US and the Oxford University found that the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine protects the macaques from COVID-19 pneumonia — a complication of SARS-CoV-2 infection in which the lungs become inflamed and may fill with fluid.

Preliminary results from this research were used to facilitate the start of clinical trials of the vaccine in humans, the researchers noted.

ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 is made from a weakened chimpanzee adenovirus — a group of viruses that can cause a range of illnesses, including the common cold — that expresses the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, a structure that enables the coronavirus to enter human cells.

The researchers show that a single dose of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19, given to six macaques 28 days before exposure to SARS-CoV-2, is effective in preventing damage to lungs and drastically reduces the viral load, when compared with six control animals.

A further six macaques were given a booster course of two doses of the vaccine, at 56 and 28 days before challenge, which increased the immune response, the team found.

The vaccinated animals showed no evidence of immune-enhanced inflammatory disease, which has been observed in some preclinical studies of vaccines against SARS-CoV-2, according to the researchers.

They noted that there was no difference in viral shedding from the nose between vaccinated and control animals.

This finding indicates that ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 may not prevent infection or transmission, but may reduce illness, the researchers noted.

The study has led to clinical trials of the ChAdOx1 nCov-19 vaccine, which have enrolled more than 8,000 volunteers as of the beginning of July 2020, they said.

Another study on 52 adult rhesus macaques published in the journal Nature on Thursday found that a single dose of a vaccine made from an adenovirus, a group of viruses that are linked to illnesses such as the mild cold, protected the animals against SARS-CoV-2.

The optimal version of the vaccine is currently being evaluated in clinical trials, said the researchers of this study from Harvard Medical School in the US.

Anupam Kher should be kicked out of BJP for using Guru Gobind Singh’s words to describe Sambit Patra: Bittu

NEW DELHI (TIP): Congress MP Ravneet Singh Bittu on Thursday, July 2.  strongly rebuked actor Anupam Kher for using the “sacred words of Guru Gobind Singh” to describe Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Sambit Patra.

    On Wednesday, Kher tweeted: “सवा लाख से एक भिडा दूँ !:) @sambitswaraj.”

Kher’s tweet seemed to reference the fact that Patra was heavily criticized on social media after he posted a picture of a child sitting on his grandfather— who was shot dead in Kashmir on Wednesday, July 1—with the caption: “PULITZER LOVERS ??”

Bittu called Kher’s tweet an attempt by RSS to dilute the “strong tenets of Sikhism.”

He tweeted: “How dare @AnupamPKher use sacred words of Guru Gobind Singh ji to describe the spokesperson of BJP. It spoils the martial image of Sikhs. It is a bid of RSS to dilute strong tenets of Sikhism. PM Modi should tender immediate apology and kick out Kher and his wife from bjp.”

  • Facebook data breach: CEO Zuckerberg says it was a “mistake”, “I’m sorry”

Facebook data breach: CEO Zuckerberg says it was a “mistake”, “I’m sorry”

Vows tougher security steps to restrict developers’ access to such information.

SAN FRANCISCO (TIP): Facebook Inc chief executive Mark Zuckerberg apologized on Wednesday, March 21, for mistakes his company made in how it handled data belonging to 50 million of its users and promised tougher steps to restrict developers’ access to such information.

The world’s largest social media network is facing growing government scrutiny in Europe and the US about a whistleblower’s allegations that London-based political consultancy Cambridge Analytica improperly accessed user information to build profiles on American voters that were later used to help elect US President Donald Trump in 2016.

“This was a major breach of trust. I’m really sorry this happened. We have a basic responsibility to protect people’s data,” Zuckerberg said in an interview with CNN, breaking a public silence since the scandal erupted at the weekend.

Zuckerberg said in a post on Facebook the company “made mistakes, there’s more to do, and we need to step up and do it.” He said the social network planned to conduct an investigation of thousands of apps that have used Facebook’s platform, restrict developer access to data, and give members a tool that lets them to disable access to their Facebook data more easily.

His plans did not represent a big reduction of advertisers’ ability to use Facebook data, which is the company’s lifeblood.

Zuckerberg said he was open to additional government regulation and happy to testify before the US Congress if he was the right person. “I’m not sure we shouldn’t be regulated…. I actually think the question is more what is the right regulation rather than yes or no, should it be regulated?… People should know who is buying the ads that they see on Facebook.”

Zuckerberg said Facebook was committed to stopping interference in the US midterm election in November and elections in India and Brazil. Zuckerberg, in an interview with The New York Times, referred to the artificial intelligence (AI) tools deployed by Facebook to detect fake accounts trying to manipulate news and influence the elections.

Such a tool was deployed for the first time in the French elections in 2017. “The new AI tools we built after the 2016 elections found, I think, more than 30,000 fake accounts that we believe were linked to Russian sources who were trying to do the same kind of tactics they did in the US in the 2016 election. We were able to disable them and prevent that from happening on a large scale in France,” he said.

This is for the first time that Zuckerberg has publicly talked about Facebook being allegedly used for influencing polls. “I feel a lot better about the systems now. At the same time, I think Russia and other governments are going to get more sophisticated in what they do, too. So, we need to make sure that we up our game,” he said.

“This is a massive focus for us to make sure we’re dialed in for not only the 2018 elections in the US, but the Indian elections, the Brazilian elections, and a number of other elections that are going on this year that are really important,” Zuckerberg said.

He said there is a lot of hard work that the Facebook needs to do to make it harder for nations like Russia to do poll interference. — Agencies

FB to Enhance security for India elections

Zuckerberg said Facebook is enhancing security features to ensure integrity of upcoming key elections in countries like India on its platform, as the social media giant faced flak over a major data breach scandal by a UK firm linked to Donald Trump’s poll campaign.

Mark Zuckerberg says he is “sure someone’s trying” to use Facebook to meddle with US mid-term polls in Nov

“I’m sure someone’s trying, “he said when asked about the possibility of meddling happening right now

“I’m sure that there’s v2, version two, of whatever the Russian effort was in 2016, I’m sure they’re working on that,” he said

Meanwhile, Facebook shares fell 1.5 per cent in premarket trading on Thursday, March 22, as the apology failed to quell Wall Street nerves

The company has lost nearly $46 billion of its stock market value over the past three days

Investors fear that any failure to protect personal data could deter advertisers and users and invite tougher regulation for the social media giant.

  • Bangladesh ex-PM Zia gets 5-year RI in graft case

Bangladesh ex-PM Zia gets 5-year RI in graft case

Son, tried in absentia, and 4 others jailed for 10 years

DHAKA (TIP): Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was, on February8, sentenced to five years’ rigorous imprisonment for corruption, a body blow for the main Opposition leader who may be disqualified from contesting the next election in December, as thousands of her supporters staged protests against her jailing.

The 72-year-old three-time PM was sentenced by Dhaka’s Special Court in connection with the embezzlement of 21 million taka ($250,000) in foreign donations meant for the Zia Orphanage Trust, named after her late husband Ziaur Rahman, a military ruler-turned-politician.

The verdict simultaneously sentenced Zia’s “fugitive” elder son and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) senior vice-president Tarique Rahman as he was tried in absentia. Rahman and four others have been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

The case is one of dozens pending against Zia, who has been a rival of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for decades. The charges against her had already led to her boycotting polls in 2014, which triggered widespread protests.

Zia, wearing a white sari, appeared in the heavily guarded courtroom amid heightened political tension. While sentencing Zia, the judge read out the abridged version of the 632-page verdict in 10 minutes.

He said though all convicts played an identical role in the crime, Zia was given a lesser term taking into account her “age and social status”. The court also said that the defense tried their best to hinder the trial proceedings as they sought time on 35 occasions in the name of changing the court.

The other convicts are former lawmaker Kazi Salimul Haque Kamal, businessman Sharfuddin Ahmed, ex-PM’s  principal secretary Kamal Uddin Siddiqui and her nephew Mominur Rahman.

Zia became the second head of government after former dictator-turned-politician HM Ershad to be convicted in a graft case.

“I will be back, there is no need to cry,” Khaleda Zia today told her weeping relatives and supporters, minutes before the three-time former Bangladeshi premier was sentenced to five years in jail related to a graft case.

According to experts, Zia will have to stay in jail for at least three days until Sunday. It will depend on the High Court whether it will give Zia bail or not. The conviction means that Zia, could be barred from contesting the General Elections in December this year.

The law says if someone is convicted for at least two years, he or she cannot contest the election for the next five years, The Daily Star said. n Zia’s case, if the high court gives her bail and yet upholds the sentencing, then she will be disqualified from the poll, it said. — PTI

    BNP stares at split

Political analysts believe Bangladesh Nationalist Party may split as several senior leaders could disassociate them from Zia. Their grouse is Zia’s elder son Tarique Rahman, BNP senior vice-president, who is learnt to be wielding authority from London, ignoring the party veterans. Rahman has sought asylum in the UK as he is also facing several criminal charges.

US will carry on with Pak military training

ISLAMABAD (TIP): The US has conveyed to Pakistan that the military training component of the aid will continue despite suspension of the security assistance package, media reports said on Thursday, January 18.

Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua informed the Senate’s foreign affairs committee on Wednesday that the US will continue funding the aid components that support their national interest, including the International Military Education and Training (IMET) part, Dawn reported.

The IMET program, which focuses on military education, is meant to establish a rapport between the US military and the recipient country’s military for building alliances for the future.

Under this program, Pakistan Army officers have been trained in the US at a cost of $52 million over the past 15 years and an allocation of another $4 million has been made for the current year.

While the IMET would continue, the US has frozen the aid provided under the programs that are more important to Pakistan, particularly the Foreign Military Financing (FMF).

The recipients of FMF can use the funds under this program for procurement of defense hardware produced by the US.

Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif, while briefing the lawmakers on the current state of Pak-US relations, said the relationship was not going “very smooth” and problems were persisting. “We have to stand up to those who accuse us of harboring terrorists,” Asif remarked.

Early this month, Trump accused Pakistan of giving nothing to the US but “lies and deceit” in return for USD 33 billion aid and said Islamabad has provided “safe haven” to terrorists.

  • President Trump’s ambitious agenda: 7 things to watch in 2018

President Trump’s ambitious agenda: 7 things to watch in 2018

President Trump may have big policy plans for 2018, but political distractions are likely to shadow prospects of big legislative achievements.

WASHINGTON (TIP) White House officials said Trump wants to rein in the threat from North Korea and list four top domestic priorities on his 2018 agenda: Repealing and replacing President Obama’s 2010 health care law, welfare reform, immigration, and a new infrastructure plan.

“I would expect to see those four areas, as well as national security, which never goes away,” White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said.

Yet the Republican-controlled Congress has been struggling to pass some of Trump’s major priorities since his election – and their challenges will only increase in 2018. The GOP’s Senate bare majority will shrink when Alabama’s newly elected senator, Democrat Doug Jones, is sworn in.

In January, lawmakers will have to confront a thicket of unfinished business. In their rush to get home for the holidays, the GOP-led Congress passed a short-term spending bill that expires Jan. 19.

Trump and GOP leaders will have to negotiate a longer-term spending deal before then to avert a government shutdown, and they will likely need Democratic support for that to pass. Other sticky issues on the January agenda include legislation aimed at stabilizing the Obamacare individual insurance markets and reauthorizing the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, a contentious anti-terrorism law that gives law enforcement sweeping spy powers.

What’s more, lawmakers will be consumed with their own 2018 mid-term elections – and the increasingly contentious Russia investigations. “As everybody in Washington knows, a midterm election year is a year when most legislation comes to a standstill,” said David Cohen, a political science professor at the University of Akron.

“Members of Congress are going to be obsessed with winning re-election,” Cohen said, and will be more eager to campaign at home than be in Washington casting tough votes.

Here are seven key issues that Trump and Congress will confront:

    North Korea

Trump will lobby China – and other countries – to twist the economic screws on North Korea, in the hopes of forcing that rogue nation to give up their nuclear weapons program.

Trump traveled to Asia to press that issue in November and declared North Korea a state sponsor of terror. Yet North Korea leader Kim Jong Un has more or less thumbed his nose at the effort, recently setting off another ballistic missile test, and continued threatening the U.S. and its allies.

As 2018 approaches, Trump and his advisers hope to settle the dispute diplomatically, but they have not ruled out the possibility of a military strike.

    Infrastructure

In his 2018 budget proposal, Trump sought $200 billion over 10 years to spend on infrastructure, leveraging private-sector spending to focus federal dollars on “transformative” projects seen as priorities at both the federal and regional level.

That went nowhere in 2017, as Trump and the GOP-led Congress focused instead on trying to repeal Obamacare and enacting tax cuts. But the president plans to rev up that push early next year, with the hope that Democrats will cooperate.

Infrastructure spending is generally a bipartisan issue, and few dispute the need to improve the nation’s highway and bridges. But Trump and Democrats have already outlined competing plans, and conservatives are likely to oppose any legislation that calls for massive new spending.

So, the fate of that will likely depend on Trump’s willingness to cut a deal with Democrats—and vice versa—heading into a heated election year.

    Health care

Trump insists he has not given up on his goal of repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act, President Obama’s health reform law, even though Republicans in Congress could not muster enough votes to deliver on that long-promised goal this year.

After Congress passed a massive tax bill in December that repealed Obamacare’s individual mandate, Trump declared the law was “essentially” repealed and lawmakers would work together to find a replacement. (However, the law is barely touched, though the requirement that nearly everyone have insurance or pay a penalty at tax time was repealed effective in 2019.)

Overhauling Obamacare will only get more complicated in 2018, as Republicans will have just 51 seats in the Senate. And the GOP’s previous efforts to nix Obamacare sparked intense anger among voters who wanted to keep the coverage – something lawmakers may not want to reignite when many of them will be on the ballot.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., signaled little interest in taking another stab at the issue. “Well, we obviously were unable to completely repeal and replace with a 52-48 Senate,” McConnell told NPR in a Dec. 21 interview. “We’ll have to take a look at what that looks like with a 51-49 Senate. But I think we’ll probably move on to other issues.”

Other Republicans pushed back, saying the GOP should not give up on that long-touted campaign promise.

    Immigration

Congress has a March deadline to decide the fate of the so-called DREAMers, the approximately 700,000 immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally when they were children. Trump nixed an Obama-era program that shielded the DREAMers from deportation, but he also said Congress should figure out a legislative fix, so the young people aren’t sent back to countries they did not grow up in.

Critics have called the Obama protections—known as DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals— a form of “amnesty” and suggested those young immigrants have taken jobs from Americans. But there’s bipartisan support in Congress and in the public to grant the DREAMers legal status and even a path to citizenship.

Whether Trump—who campaigned on a hardline anti-immigrant platform—will sign such a bill is unclear. He has sent mixed signals on the issue, and he’s also called for new restrictions on refugees and others seeking entry into the United States.

After the Dec. 12 arrest of a man who tried to set off a bomb in a New York commuter tunnel, Trump called for the end of “chain migration” and the diversity visa lottery programs.

    Welfare reform

In announcing a new major legislative priority following the tax cut bill, Trump said welfare reform is “desperately needed in our country.”

A Trump budget proposal last year called for adding work requirements to some government programs and tightening eligibility requirements for low-income tax credits. “We want to get our people off of welfare and back to work,” Trump said. “So important. It’s out of control. It’s out of control.”

Democrats say welfare reforms instituted two decades ago are working and that Trump wants to punch major holes in the social safety net.

    Iran

Trump announced in October he would no longer certify that Iran is in compliance with an Obama-era deal, in which Tehran pledged to give up the means to make nuclear weapons while the U.S. and allies ease economic sanctions. Instead, Trump called on Congress to improve the agreement, and the fate of the Iran nuclear deal is likely to come to a head in 2018.

Supporters of the agreement fear Iran will walk away from the agreement and pursue nuclear weapons anyway, triggering a dangerous arms race in the Middle East.

    The debt limit

The U.S. Treasury will run out of money to pay its bills sometime in the spring — unless Congress and the president agree on legislation to raise the nation’s debt limit. The Treasury Department lost its authority to borrow any new money to pay the government’s obligations on Dec. 9.

Officials are currently taking “extraordinary measures” to keep from defaulting on the government’s current obligations, including Medicare benefits and the interest on the national debt. But the agency will run out of those accounting gimmicks in late March or early April, according to an analysis by the Congressional Budget Office.

That could lead to a round of partisan fiscal brinksmanship—with threats of defaulting on the government’s debts. Conservatives have generally opposed increasing the nation’s borrowing authority, so Trump will likely have to negotiate with Democrats to come to an agreement.

‘Gujarat poll results zabardast jhatka for BJP’

NEW DELHI (TIP): A day after the Gujarat result , Congress president Rahul Gandhi said the polls had delivered BJP a “zabardast jhatka (terrific shock)” that exposed PM Narendra Modi’s credibility crisis , prompting BJP to respond that the leader was enjoying “defeat as victory”.

In his first comments on the Gujarat election result where Congress ran rival BJP close, Rahul told reporters, “It is a very good result for us. Agreed that we lost and could have won, we fell short. But BJP suffered a massive jolt in Gujarat. People of Gujarat do not accept Modi’s model. It is high on propaganda but it’s hollow.”

Senior BJP leader and HRD minister Prakash Javadekar said Rahul was under an illusion that the Gujarat polls were a jolt to the ruling party. “We (BJP) won both state assembly elections and in Gujarat for the sixth time. Actually this is a jolt for Congress,” he said.

Javadekar alleged that Congress adopted divisive politics in Gujarat, but people put their faith in Modi and his development agenda. “It seems Rahul Gandhi is under an illusion and he is enjoying defeat as victory. This shows his dynastic arrogance and is an insult to the people’s mandate,” he said.

De Blasio Administration and Hispanic Federation host Dreamer Dinner; Renew call for passage of the Dream Act

NEW YORK (TIP): The Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs and the Center for Faith & Community Partnerships joined the Hispanic Federation to bring over one hundred New Yorkers, including dozens of Dreamers, together last night to break bread, give thanks, and refortify their shared commitment to passing a legislative solution for New York City’s 30,000 Dreamers, and the nearly 800,000 Dreamers nationwide. As families gather around dinner tables across the country to show thanks for their loved ones and communities, New York City’s Dreamers, their families and allies will break bread in a showing of American values and a refortified commitment to fighting for the Dream Act.

“This city is home to 30,000 Dreamers, who are our neighbors, our colleagues, and our friends. The de Blasio Administration won’t stop fighting to keep them right here where they belong: in New York City,” said Acting Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs Bitta Mostofi. “At a time of year when families and friends are gathered together to show thanks and love for one another, we are breaking bread with Dreamers to do just the same.”

“It is that time of year when many reflect on and honor our national traditions. There is no greater American tradition than immigration – arriving to a nation, making it your own, and making it great – and that is what Dreamers have done,” said Marco Carrion, Commissioner of the Mayor’s Community Affairs Unit. “New York City supports its Dreamers and will fight for a clean Dream Act in Congress. Although the federal government is trying to limit their rights and opportunities, the City of New York will not leave Dreamers behind. The City is here to help Dreamers achieve their goals and thrive.”

“Tonight, we affirm New York City’s commitment to our Dreamers,” said Jonathan Soto, Executive Director of the Mayor’s Center for Faith and Community Partnerships. “We honor their dreams and will fight to protect them, as fellow New Yorkers, from anti-immigrant legislation and policy. Working with our partners at the Community Affairs Unit, Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, the Hispanic Federation, and the faith community, we declare to our Dreamers and their advocates: the City has your back.”

“We call them Dreamers because their story – growing up here as immigrants and building a life here as new Americans – is part and parcel of the American Dream,” said Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer. “America must do right by our Dreamers. At events like this one, in the streets, in the courts, and wherever else they need us to be, New York will continue to stand by the young people who have grown up here, contributed to our community, and who deserve security, stability, and a full life with their families, outside the shadows.”

“As a nation built by immigrants, it is fitting that we stand in solidarity with Dreamers this holiday season,” said José Calderón, President of Hispanic Federation. “Dreamers are our family members, classmates, colleagues, friends, and represent in every way the very promise and future of America. Hispanic Federation will never give up on fighting for their rights and a clean Dream Act that will help uplift them, their families, and our communities.”

DACA recipients are essential to New York City’s communities and economy, playing critical roles such as caregivers, public servants, lawyers, teachers, and members of the armed forces. In New York City, Dreamers contribute $19 million annually in local revenue. The de Blasio Administration continues to advocate for Dreamers in Congress, as well as provide direct resources and support through neighborhood outreach and legal clinics. The City is providing free legal support through ActionNYC, mental health support through ThriveNYC and has supported over 600 Know Your Rights forums this year in immigrant communities across the five boroughs. The City has also brought their fight to the courts, participating in amicus briefs in support of Dreamers. Through Cities for Action, a national coalition of over 100 mayors and county executives, New York City is working with Mayors across the country to urge Congress to pass the Dream Act.

  • KEJRIWAL’S ‘AAM AADMI’ CAR STOLEN; AAP LEADER ANNOUNCES REWARD

KEJRIWAL’S ‘AAM AADMI’ CAR STOLEN; AAP LEADER ANNOUNCES REWARD

NEW DELHI (TIP): A creaky Wagon R, used by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal till the 2015 assembly election and which helped cement his position as the “aam aadmi”, was on Thursday stolen from outside the Delhi Secretariat, police said.

A senior police officer said the incident happened just before noon and was reported to the police around 1 pm. The car was parked on the roadside outside the Delhi Secretariat.

The incident has outraged AAP workers, many of whom posted videos of Kejriwal using the car, especially during the 2014 Republic Day, after he became the chief minister of Delhi for the first time.

AAP’s Haryana convener Naveen Jaihind has announced an undisclosed amount as reward for whoever finds the vehicle.

Jaihind had sought the “lucky car” for his campaigning when he contested the 2014 Lok Sabha poll from Rohtak.

“I want this car back. There are a lot of emotions, memories attached to it. Whoever returns the car, I will give him a suitable reward, which will be much more than what he will get from selling the car,” Jaihind said.

Like Jaihind, many AAP volunteers recollect the “iconic” car for it witnessed the ups and downs of the Aam Aadmi Party.

The car was witness to two assembly election wins in 2013 and 2015 and also to the party’s poor performance in the Lok Sabha polls.

It was “donated” to Kejriwal by Kundan Sharma, a software engineer, in January 2013. However, when Kejriwal parted ways with his then party colleagues Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav, Sharma demanded that the vehicle be returned.

Even after Kejriwal became the chief minister in December 2013, he refused to use an official car and preferred his old Wagon-R.

AAP volunteers recall the blue car which had rust and dents on it, giving refuge to a sick Kejriwal, suffering from severe cough and cold on a nippy January night in 2014, when he staged a ‘dharna’ outside the Rail Bhawan against the Delhi Police.

The humble hatchback was used by an AAP functionary before it was stolen this afternoon.
