Mayor Jane Castor Honors AAPI with Key to the City, Proclaims AAPI Day in Tampa

TAMPA, Fla (TIP): In a historic recognition of the contributions of physicians of Indian origin to American healthcare, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor honored the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) during AAPICON 2026 by presenting the organization with the Key to the City.

In a historic gesture, Mayor Castor declared July 2 and the entire July 4 weekend as AAPI Weekend for the City of Tampa, marking the city’s deep appreciation for the organization.

Dr. Amit Chakrabarty, President of AAPI received the Key on behalf of AAPI, to Tampa from the Mayor during the 44th annual convention that was attended by over 1,000 physicians.

The special recognition, presented during the inaugural ceremonies of AAPICON 2026, reflected the City of Tampa’s appreciation for AAPI’s longstanding role in advancing healthcare, medical education, research, and community service across the United States. AAPI, representing more than 120,000 physicians, residents, fellows, and medical students of Indian origin, is widely recognized as one of the most influential ethnic medical organizations in the nation.

Welcoming thousands of delegates to Tampa, Mayor Castor praised AAPI’s impact on healthcare and the significance of bringing the organization’s annual convention to the city.

“We could not be more excited to be hosting the convention of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin,” Mayor Castor said. “It was an honor for me and for our city to have such distinguished leaders in our community. Their words were inspiring, and everyone walked away with a new level of motivation.”

AAPI President Dr. Amit Chakrabarty opened the convention with an emotional and unifying address. He reminded the delegates at the convention that AAPI’s strength lies in collective purpose rather than individual leadership. “Today is not about one individual,” he said. “It is about a shared vision… all of us working together to ensure that AAPI remains strong, relevant, and prepared for the future.”

The Mayor’s recognition highlighted AAPI’s remarkable achievements in patient care, education, advocacy, and public health. During the ceremony, she emphasized the organization’s nationwide influence and its critical role in strengthening the American healthcare system.

In the official proclamation presented to AAPI, Mayor Castor noted: “AAPI organization is one of the most influential diaspora medical associations in the world and the second largest medical organization in the United States, and its members deliver care in every specialty and contribute to nearly one in seven patient encounters nationwide.”

The proclamation concluded with the formal declaration: “NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jane Castor, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of the City of Tampa, Florida, do hereby proclaim Thursday, July 2, 2026, as AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF PHYSICIANS OF INDIAN ORIGIN DAY in the City of Tampa, Florida, and urge all citizens to join in celebrating the vast accomplishments of dedicated physicians of Indian origin in our city, state, and nation, and to show appreciation for their contributions to health and well-being.”
