Current Position: Entrepreneur, Philanthropist, Community Leader, and Director – Public Relations & Media, Samarthanam USA
Known For: Building one of America’s leading South Asian satellite TV enterprises; becoming an advocate for blind cricket and opportunities for people with visual impairments.
Major Achievement: Transforming personal adversity into entrepreneurial success by establishing Sonu Satellite as a nationally recognized enterprise.

At an age when most people are building careers and raising young families, Nilesh “Neil” Doshi was confronted with a life-altering diagnosis that threatened to redefine his future. Doctors told him that he was steadily losing his eyesight to retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative retinal disorder that would eventually render him legally blind.
Yet, instead of surrendering to despair, he made a solemn promise to his parents: “I am going to rise above this. We will face this together, and I will prove that my dreams are greater than my disability.”
Nearly three decades later, his extraordinary journey stands as a testament to resilience, entrepreneurial excellence, and purposeful leadership.
New Jersey entrepreneur Neil Doshi never lost the one quality that truly defines visionary leadership – the ability to see possibilities where others perceive limitations.
For almost four decades in America, Doshi has embodied the timeless ideals of the American Dream. He has built successful businesses across multiple industries, introduced South Asian television programming to thousands of homes and institutions across the country, earned national recognition for entrepreneurial excellence, and emerged as a respected advocate for people living with visual impairments.
His story is a remarkable narrative of resilience, reinvention, and an unwavering belief that life’s greatest setbacks often become the foundation for its most meaningful achievements.
Those who know him describe him as relentlessly optimistic, deeply compassionate, and exceptionally driven.
Doshi himself says simply, “Whenever I commit myself to something, I give it 100 percent. I try to understand every aspect of the business, continuously learning, and always asking how things can be done better.”
That philosophy transformed a modest family enterprise operating from the basement of his New Jersey home into one of America’s most respected satellite television distribution companies.
The American Dream Begins
Born in Rajkot, Gujarat, Doshi immigrated to the US in 1986 with his parents and younger brother. Like countless first-generation immigrants, the family’s early years were defined by uncertainty, sacrifice, and perseverance.
He recalls. “We faced language barriers, economic uncertainty, and the challenges of starting over.”
Financial realities compelled him to enter the workforce at an early stage. He worked in retail and hardware stores before landing in banking, where his work ethic and commitment to customer service distinguished him. From a bank teller, he progressed into customer relations and mortgage lending. He immersed himself in every operational aspect of the business, often identifying innovative ways to improve efficiency and enhance customer experience. His proactive approach earned him recognition within the organization.
That mindset would later define his entrepreneurial journey.
When Life Changed Forever
In 1997, when both his professional career and young family were flourishing, Doshi began noticing subtle changes in his peripheral vision while driving. Medical examinations confirmed what he feared.
He had retinitis pigmentosa—a rare inherited retinal disease that gradually destroys vision and ultimately leads to legal blindness.
The diagnosis was devastating.
“My immediate thought wasn’t about myself. It was, ‘How will I provide for my two-year-old daughter? How will I remain independent?'”
After weeks of uncertainty, however, he resolved one day, “I will prove that I can still accomplish everything I set out to do.”
That resolve became the defining philosophy of his life.
Building Sonu Satellite
Remarkably, the same year that brought him one of life’s greatest personal challenges also revealed one of its greatest opportunities.
While shopping for a satellite television system so his young daughter could remain connected to Indian culture and language, Doshi experienced an entrepreneurial revelation.
“I thought to myself – why not become a dealer and provide these services to the growing Indian-American community?”
That simple idea became Sonu Satellite.
Together with his brother, Hiten Doshi, he established the company from the basement of their family home, using their garage as the first warehouse.
The modest venture quickly evolved into one of the country’s leading distributors of international satellite television programming.
In time, Sonu Satellite expanded far beyond homes. The company supplied programming and communication solutions to hotels, hospitals, nursing homes, educational institutions, embassies, government agencies, and commercial establishments throughout the United States. Its reputation for innovation, customer service, and reliability earned many industry accolades and national recognition.
Eventually, the company was successfully merged with a private equity-backed organization, reflecting the significant enterprise value Doshi had created.
Today, the Sonu brand continues through diversified interests spanning media, hospitality, and financial services.
Family: The Foundation of Every Success
Yet Doshi remains unequivocal about the true architects of his success.
“My family has been my greatest strength.”
In particular about his wife, Kavita, he says, “I can never become the hero unless Kavita is my hero. Because of my visual impairment, she has driven me everywhere, stood beside me in every venture, and shared every challenge. None of my accomplishments would have been possible without her.”
He also thanks his parents for their unwavering support which enabled him to pursue entrepreneurship while they helped raise his children.

Today, those sacrifices have come full circle. His daughter, Sonali, is a practicing attorney, while his son, Bhavin, has established a successful career in investment banking.
For Doshi, their accomplishments represent one of the most meaningful rewards of his immigrant journey.
Equally enduring is his commitment to Indian cultural values.
“I love America, and I remain deeply proud of my Indian heritage. Respect for parents, family, traditions, and community are values that continue to guide every decision I make.”
A New Chapter: Service Beyond Success
Doshi is now dedicating increasing time and energy to philanthropy, social impact, and disability advocacy.
Recently, he was inducted into the CSR Advisory Board of the Eye Foundation of America (EFA), calling him a “A Champion of Change – A Voice for the Visionless.” Founded by renowned ophthalmologist Dr. V. K. Raju, EFA is committed to restoring sight and providing comprehensive eye care to underserved communities while supporting visually impaired children through education, rehabilitation, and medical intervention.
For Doshi, the appointment carries deeply personal significance.
Yet, perhaps his most passionate commitment today lies elsewhere—in the world of blind cricket.
Championing Blind Cricket Through Samarthanam USA
Recognizing his leadership, communication expertise, and commitment to disability inclusion, Doshi has been appointed Director – Public Relations & Media of Samarthanam USA, leading their strategic communications, public engagement, and media outreach. Samarthanam USA is part of the globally respected Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled and dedicated to empowering individuals with visual impairments and other disabilities through education, vocational training, technology, sports, performing arts, and sustainable livelihood initiatives. Samarthanam USA supports the Cricket Association for the Blind in the USA, that promotes, organizes and expands blind cricket across USA.
For Doshi, whose lifelong love for cricket predates his vision loss, the mission resonates on a personal level. Says he, “Bind cricket is about far more than sport—it restores confidence, creates opportunities, and changes lives.”
A Legacy Defined by Purpose
Doshi remains profoundly grateful for the opportunities the country has afforded him. “America truly is the land of opportunity. I started at the very bottom, but this country gave me the freedom to work hard, continue learning, build businesses, and keep moving forward.”
At 58, Nilesh Doshi’s legacy extends well beyond entrepreneurial accomplishment.
It is the story of a man who refused to allow blindness to diminish his vision.
A man who transformed adversity into enterprise, enterprise into service, and service into lasting social impact.
He continues to demonstrate that true vision is measured not by what one sees with the eyes, but by what one inspires in others.
His journey serves as a powerful reminder that while circumstances may alter the course of life, they need never define its destination.
