18 Years of Leadership: Ravi Bhooplapur’s Impact on Xavier University School of Medicine

Ravi Bhooplapur, President, Xavier University School of Medicine.

Eighteen years ago this week, I had the distinct honor of assuming the presidency of Xavier University School of Medicine with a clear and purposeful vision: to provide high-quality, accessible medical education that empowers students to serve communities across the globe. It has been a privilege to work alongside our dedicated faculty and staff in preparing physicians who are making meaningful contributions worldwide. I extend my sincere gratitude to our Chairman, Board of Trustees, our investors, and our Chancellor, Dr. Bhat, Dr. Dubey, Chief Academic Officer, whose steadfast guidance has been instrumental in maintaining our leadership in medical education.
Over the past eighteen years, Xavier has reached significant milestones. These include achieving unconditional accreditation by the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine (A.C.C.M.), recognized by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (E.C.F.M.G.) and the National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (N.C.F.M.E.A.) under the U.S. Department of Education. We have also secured approval from the New York State Education Department, achieved an 85% residency match rate this year, and maintained strong academic outcomes over time, including an average first-time pass rate of over 85% on USMLE Step 1 and 90% on Step 2 CK. In recent years, we have further expanded opportunities for our students by establishing residency placements in Canada and facilitating access to provincial loan programs for our Canadian students.
Guided by the principles of the One Health initiative, we launched our Veterinary Medicine program in 2023, which is currently progressing toward accreditation. Our Nursing program has also demonstrated early success, having graduated two cohorts to date. Looking ahead, we anticipate the launch of our online Master of Public Health program and additional graduate offerings in September 2026. Concurrently, the development of our state-of-the-art campus, advanced laboratory facilities, newly acquired land for veterinary education, and the continued expansion of our residential and academic infrastructure in Aruba will further enhance the Xavier experience.
Recognized among the top Caribbean medical schools, Xavier University School of Medicine remains steadfast in its commitment to empowering aspiring physicians, veterinarians, and nurses to achieve their professional goals and to serve humanity with excellence, compassion, and integrity.
