    Udta Punjab Controversy Intensifies

The censor board is demanding the removal of “Punjab” from the title of the Abhishek Chaubey-directed movie along with 89 cuts.

Amitabh, who is in Kolkata for the promotion of his upcoming film “Te3n”, said: “I am not aware of the issue, but would like to say that don’t try to kill creativity.”

The big wigs including, Mahesh Bhat, Rahul Dholakia, Satish Kaushik, Mukesh Bhatt and many more on Wednesday, June 8, addressed a Press conference in support of team Udta Punjab and demanded an immediate apology from Nihlani for raising baseless allegation against Kashyap.

Reacting to the allegation, Anurag Kashyap said “I feel ashamed in even defending myself on such an allegation.”

He further raised question on Nihlani’s work strategy and said “Picchle do saal mein aisa kya ho gaya ki har film ko tribunal mein ja kar clear karwana pad raha hai.”

Describing the situation as the worst ever, Mahesh Bhatt said “we can’t turn into a Saudi Arabia where there is opulence but no free thought in society.”

  • Sanjay Bangar appointed as India’s coach for Zimbabwe tour

Sanjay Bangar appointed as India’s coach for Zimbabwe tour

NEW DELHI (TIP): Sanjay Bangar, former India all-rounder, has been appointed as India’s head coach for the Zimbabwe series, the Board of Cricket for Cricket in India announced on Thursday (May 26). Bangar has previously worked with the national team as one of the assistant coaches and is currently the head coach of Indian Premier League franchise Kings XI Punjab. The BCCI have also named Abhay Sharma as the fielding coach. Abhay was previously India A and Under-19’s fielding and wicket-keeping coach.

“The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed Mr. Koka Ramesh, a former cricketer and Zonal Secretary of the Andhra Cricket Association, as the Administrative Manager of the Indian team for the tour to Zimbabwe,” the BCCI said in a statement.

“Mr. Sanjay Bangar has been appointed as the Head Coach of the Indian cricket team for the forthcoming tour to Zimbabwe, which commences on the 8th of June comprising 3 One-Day International matches and 3 T20 International matches to be played in Harare.”

“Mr. Abhay Sharma has been appointed as the fielding coach of the team.”

The BCCI has been looking to appoint a full-time head coach for the national team after team director Ravi Shastri’s tenure came to an end following the World T20. Bangar (batting), B Arun (fielding) and R Sridhar (fielding) were part of the coaching staff along with Shastri. Newly elected BCCI president Anurag Thakur recently revealed that the process to appoint the next head coach would take around two months and also went on to mention that they had set June 10 as the deadline day for applications to be submitted for the same.

MS Dhoni will be leading the side in Zimbabwe but the selectors have rested several key players ahead of the Test tour to West Indies.

  • Task for selectors if Dhoni backs out of Zimbabwe tour

Task for selectors if Dhoni backs out of Zimbabwe tour

NEW DELHI (TIP): About a couple of months ago, when India’s ICC World Twenty20 campaign ended in the semifinal stage, Mahendra Singh Dhoni reacted to retirement with a rhetoric, asking the scribes present in the room whether anyone had a brother or a son who could keep wickets for India. It was a telling statement on the health of wicketkeeping resources in the country. Such has been the uncertainty over Dhoni’s successor, that now there is a buzz that KL Rahul – at best a makeshift gloveman – could be tried as the wicketkeeping option on India’s forthcoming limited-overs tour of Zimbabwe if skipper Dhoni opts to sit out.

Rahul’s batting prowess seems to be covering up for the frequent blemishes behind the stumps. While it is understood that the selectors are keen on having fresh and young faces on the tour, it will be interesting to see what Dhoni chooses to do. The performances of the regular wicketkeepers in this Indian Premier League put the selectors in a quandary. Parthiv Patel has lost his place in the Mumbai Indians XI squad and Wriddhiman Saha too got dropped for a couple of matches at Kings XI Punjab. Dinesh Karthik’s erratic glovework doesn’t inspire much confidence either. This puts Naman Ojha ahead in the race.

All of them are on the other side of 30. The next big hopes are Sanju Samson, aged 21, and an 18-year-old Rishabh Pant. While Pant, India’s Under-19 wicketkeeper, has made ripples with his batting, Samson too has been touted as one for the future. But neither of the two has kept wickets in this IPL or played an entire Ranji Trophy season as a wicketkeeper.

If IPL is any indication, then there is a trend of using makeshift wicketkeepers. It started with Robin Uthappa donning the big gloves for Kolkata Knight Riders a couple of years ago and pushing his case with consistent performances, with Ambati Rayudu too doing that job for the Mumbai Indians. Royal Challengers Bangalore have taken a liking to this idea this season, fielding two wicketkeepers in Kedar Jadhav and KL Rahul – neither of whom is a regular.

Kiran More, former India wicketkeeper and chief selector, feels a regular wicketkeeper should travel to Zimbabwe if Dhoni opts out. “Dhoni is still the best wicketkeeper-batsman in India. It won’t be a bad idea if he goes for the tour as there aren’t many limited-overs matches to play this year. But if he doesn’t, then a proper wicketkeeper should go,” More told TOI. “At this moment, Naman looks to be the best man. Sanju did have a couple of sessions with me but he still has a lot of work to do on his keeping,” More added. (PTI)

When the Congress Government comes back to Power, problems of NRIs will be resolved’: Captain Amarinder Singh

MELVILLE, NY (TIP): The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President and former Chief Minister of Punjab, Capt. Amarinder Singh, addressing a huge rally in New York on Saturday May 7, 2016 said “Punjab is undergoing difficult times at the present, and these difficulties can only be resolved and Punjab’s progress put back on track when Congress government comes back to power.”

Capt. Amarinder Singh was on his last leg of his journey in the United States and was addressing a large crowd at the Hilton Hotel in Melville, New York organized under the aegis of Punjabi NRIs of US. The Indian National Overseas Congress, USA headed by President Mohinder Singh Gilzian supported this successful event.

Capt. Amarinder Sigh said that at present, the conditions in Punjab are very bad. The Sikh leaders themselves are causing harm. Some of them will go to any extent for the sake of titles. Here, discussing with many individuals directly amongst the 2000-crowd, he listened to personal issues and general complaints. He declared that the properties of NRI Punjabis that have been illegally occupied or confiscated will be freed and given back to the rightful owners. Once their government is established, new rules and procedures will be put in place to resolve NRI problems. He said he was fully familiar with the problems of the NRIs and has great sympathies for them.

In addition, talking about Punjab, he said, inattention to agriculture, joblessness and drug addiction by youth were among the major problems which required careful and urgent social and governmental intervention. He stated that in Punjab, important departments including the Education were failing to deliver even minimum services and his party apparatus was already preparing to uplift andimprove them to a higher standard of efficiency. He said Punjab was in a dire need for a creative and far-sighted Government and the Congress will be able to deliver that.

He warned Punjabis about Aam Aadmi Party and said that Delhi administration has gone down under AAP and if they adapt to their failed policies and practices in Punjab, it will collapse. In the midst of applause, ovations and cries of “Captain Amarinder Singh Zindabad, and Captain Le aao, Punjab Bachao!!” From the audience, he warned that we have to be cautious of 3 things (Whites) in which White liquor, White Fly and White Topi were included. He lamented that Badal family had ruined Punjab with corruption. Thebackbone of Punjab, the farmer, is in dire shape as their situation is deteriorating and farmers are being forced to commit suicide in alarming numbers.

He also heard complaints from members of the audience and offered solutions that his new government will offer if it takes office. His answers which were in simple and straight forward language were considered as very satisfactory by all to the concerns they had expressed and the audience left fully content. Hon. Sangat Singh Gilzian, MLA from Tanda who, among others, accompanied Capt. Amarinder Singh from Punjab also gave a brief narrative of the deplorable conditions in Punjab and said that Punjab now needed a great leader like Capt. Amarinder Singh to save it from drowning. Hon. In conclusion, the President of the Indian National Overseas Congress, USA, Mr. Mohinder Singh Gilzian thanked the audience for coming and participating in the discussions and said that this event brought historic crowd together in New York. He was happy that the audience were completely satisfied with the answers that they had received from Capt. Amarinder Singh which had clarified all misunderstandings of people relative to all opposition parties including AAP. In this connection, Gurmit Singh Gill also spoke and added that he would take thousands of Punjabi NRIs from USA to Punjab for the 2017 elections. Amongst those who played an active role in organizing the event and making it a grand success included Karamjit Singh Dhaliwal, President Malwa Brothers Association and Vice-President of INOC, USA, Tejinder Gill and Jasvir Singh Nawanshahr.

George Abraham, Chairman, Mohinder Singh Gilzian, President, and Harbachan Singh, Secretary-General, together with several senior officers of INOC, USA met with Capt. Amarinder Singh before the meeting where they discussed some of the important issues and strategies pertaining to the work of the INOC, USA and its resolve to assist in the furtherance of the goal of Capt. • Punjab Foodgrain Scam: Grain vanishes from Punjab godowns

Punjab Foodgrain Scam: Grain vanishes from Punjab godowns

MUMBAI (TIP): And now another scam. This time it is foodgrain scam. And it is the Punjab government, a partner of BJP in Punjab and at the center which is involved in a massive scam which may cause a splotch of red ink on bank balance sheets. The scam is in the form of disappearing food stocks in Punjab godowns which threatens to burn a Rs 12,000-crore hole in the books of a cartel of 30 banks and embarrass the Parkash Singh Badal administration, reports say.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has ordered all banks with exposure to the Punjab government’s food borrowing program to provide for potential losses after discovering that food grain supposed to have been bought with bank funds has vanished from godowns.

At least four people familiar with the matter said RBI’s directive has alarmed banks who now have to provide at least 15% of the loans, or a total of Rs 2,250 crore, in March and June quarters.

State Bank of India Chairperson Arundhati Bhattacharya said, April 18, the RBI has asked the top lender to make provisions for possible losses on account of the unfolding foodgrain scam in Punjab.

“Yes,” Bhattacharya told reporters when asked whether the regulator has asked the government-run bank to make provisions in the case. However, she did not elaborate.

Asked about the banks’ total exposure to the Punjab government, she said “I don’t have the exact numbers. We need to get those.”

Earlier in the day, Minister of State for Finance Jayant Sinha said the government is working to resolve the issue.

“We are working with the regulators as well as the banks and various other government agencies to ensure the matter with respect to the food stocks in Punjab is satisfactorily resolved,” Sinha told reporters.
Normally, all state government borrowings are sovereign and banks have been telling the regulator that there is no need to provide for potential losses. But the regulator has insisted on this move, underlining once again RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan’s take-no-prisoners approach when it comes to treating bad loans.

“RBI does not agree,” one banker said. “It is not (convinced) about the recoverability of the receivables. Hence, it has asked banks to make provisions.”

The development, a bolt from the blue for the banking system, is also a huge embarrassment for the Badal government whose popularity is under pressure from a resurgent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress. The state goes to polls in 2017.

The Akali Dal, a partner in the ruling NDA at the Centre, runs the state in alliance with BJP. The state government is believed to have told banks and RBI that there is no deficit and it would be able to repay the loans. An anguished banker told ET that his bank’s entire profit may be wiped out by the provisioning. “All the parties involved, state government, Centre and RBI, were aware of the deficiency — the stock versus the loan amount, but it is always the banks which have to pay the price. Why can’t the government set up an enquiry about the missing stock?”

Although the issue of ‘deficient stocks’ in Punjab’s granaries have been discussed for months, bankers did not think of provisioning as the loans were considered ‘zero-risk’ since they went into the state government’s books.

“There has been an issue of reconciliation between the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and Punjab state government, and till the matter gets resolved, RBI has told us to make 15% provision on the food credit given to Punjab government,” said a banker who preferred anonymity.

A mail sent to the Reserve Bank of India on April 20 evening did not elicit response. The central bank and commercial banks were shut for a national holiday on Thursday, April 21, When contacted over phone, FCI Chairman Yogendra Tripathi declined comment saying the Punjab government officials ‘will give a better clarity’.

The issue is being looked at, said an official at the state food, civil supplies and consumer affairs department who did not want to be identified. “There has been no siphoning off of grain stock. The money being stated is the compound interest of the past few years,” the official said.

Loans in the Indian banking system are divided into two broad categories — food credit and non-food credit. Food credit is mostly through FCI which is a canalizing agent for the states in buying grain from the market. While non-food credit is at Rs 71lakh crore, food credit is at Rs 1lakh crore, RBI data shows.

For food purchases, banks lend to FCI and foodgrain are stored in godowns in each state. The monitoring of the godowns and the payment of interest on the loans are done by the state government.
Meanwhile, Congress Party on Friday, April 22 demanded a high court-monitored, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the alleged foodgrain scam in Punjab.

“The Akali Dal-BJP government in Punjab has the dubious distinction of first emptying the coffers of the state and now even foodgrains are disappearing from the state. This is a very serious situation as it is connected with the food security of the country,” said Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari at a press conference here.

“Punjab is a producing state from where procurement takes place, a large amount of storage takes place and if the reports of disappearance of foodgrain is true, it calls for a court-monitored CBI enquiry. This definitely calls for at least a HC-monitored CBI inquiry,” he added.

  • Canada PM to apologise to Sikhs for Komagata Maru episode

Canada PM to apologise to Sikhs for Komagata Maru episode

NEW DELHI: Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau notched up another signal honour as a liberal humanist by pledging to make a full apology in the House of Commons for a century-old slight against Indians, mainly Sikhs.

In 1914, the Canadian government turned away 376 immigrants from Punjab who had sailed from India on board the ship Komagata Maru, after quarantining the vessel off the port of Vancouver. Following a two month long stand-off during which the Canadians refused to allow passengers to disembark, the ship was escorted out by gunships — one of them ironically called HMCS Rainbow — and sent back to Calcutta, where clashes with British soldiers killed 19 and ended in prison sentence to others.

“The passengers of the Komagata Maru like millions of immigrants to Canada since were seeking refuge and better lives for their families. With so much to contribute to their new home, they chose Canada and we failed them utterly. As a nation, we should never forget the prejudice suffered by the Sikh community at the hands of the Canadian government of the day. We should not and we will not,” Trudeau said at an event to celebrate Baisakhi in Ottawa. “That is why next month, on May 18, I will stand in the House of Commons and offer a full apology for the Komagata Maru incident,” he added.

The Canadian premier, already a darling of the liberal constituency across the world, has particularly endeared himself to Sikhs in Canada even before he inducted four of them in his cabinet (and jokingly boasted he had more Sikhs in his government than Narendra Modi). The apology pledge on Monday, made at a prayer meeting where he wore a saffron headscarf, was preceded by a widely-distributed video greeting to Sikhs on the occasion of Baisakhi, ending with him greeting them with “Wahe Guruji da Khalsa Wahe Guruji da Fateh”, the traditional Sikh invocation.

Even before he was elected, the Sikh community was electrified by another video that showed him dancing the bhangra, and his actions since he was elected have enthralled the community so much that some have dubbed him “Justin Singh Trudeau.”

On Monday, Trudeau stepped it up several notches saying “an apology made in the House of Commons will not erase the pain and suffering of those who lives through that shameful experience, but an apology is not only the appropriate action to take, it’s the right action to take and the House is the appropriate place for it to happen.”

It was in the House of Commons that the laws that prevented the passengers from disembarking were first passed and so it’s fitting that the government should apologize there on behalf of all Canadians, he added, referring obliquely to an unmet Sikh demand for an apology in the legislature after then Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper had expressed regret outside the house in 2008.

Trudeau reminded the gathering that April is a special month not only for Sikhs but for all Canadians, since it marks the anniversary of the adoption of the charter of rights and freedoms which ensures that no Canadian needs to make the choice between their religion and activities in their day-to-day lives. The charter ensures that the five sacred Ks of the Sikhs are protected, he said, adding that as Canadian Sikhs gather with their loved ones to mark the creation of the Khalsa, it’s a chance to reflect on shared values and celebrate the successes of the past year.

The immense grace Trudeau has shown since coming to office has won him admirers across the world, including on social media. “I’m honored that 2 million people around the world have now ‘liked’ my Facebook page. Thank you to all 2 million of you!” he posted on Facebook on Monday.

  • CONSPIRACY THEORIES FLOAT AFTER NAMDHARI MATRIARCH’S MURDER

CONSPIRACY THEORIES FLOAT AFTER NAMDHARI MATRIARCH’S MURDER

LUDHIANA (TIP): After Namdhari sect matriarch and the widow of former sect head Satguru Jagjit Singh was gunned down, many followers on blamed a “third party”, which purportedly wants the family running the sect to stay divided, for the murder.

Chand Kaur, 88, was shot by two unidentified assailants on a motorcycle outside Bhaini Sahib, the headquarters of Namdhari sect near Ludhiana, on Monday morning.

On April 5, there was a sea of supporters, clad in traditional white Namdhari attire, at Bhaini Sahib for Chand Kaur’s cremation, attended, among others, by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Ludhiana MP Ravneet Singh Bittu.

Kaur’s grandson Jai Singh (son of the matriarch’s daughter, Sahib Kaur) and Uttam Singh, son of present sect chief Thakur Uday Singh, lit the pyre.

Following Kaur’s death, a section of supporters of Uday Singh had alleged that his brother Dalip Singh could be behind the conspiracy — the brothers are Kaur’s nephews— and a group of protesters demanded his arrest. A bitter succession war had begun in the sect after Jagjit Singh’s death in 2012.

Chand Kaur backed Uday Singh to take over the reins from her late husband, while Dalip Singh wanted Kaur to be the satguru. Dalip Singh, who leads the sect’s dera in Jagjivan Nagar, in Sirsa district of Haryana, stands barred from entering the Namdharis’ Bhaini Sahib headquarters. Several cases have been filed by followers of the brothers against the

other group over the years. While a bhog ceremony for Chand Kaur, held as part of the funeral ceremony, will be organised at Bhaini Sahib on Sunday, Dalip Singh’s dera in Haryana will have a separate bhog a day before— on Saturday. On Tuesday, many followers at Bhaini Sahib called Chand Kaur’s murder a “third-party conspiracy” to polarise the sect and an attempt to widen the rift between Dalip Singh and Uday Singh. Several supporters claimed that more than a succession war, this has now become a “war among their people do want the family to unite”. Besides the succession issue, there is a huge financial empire at stake as well. The sect owns acres of land, schools, hospitals and other businesses across the country — all run in the name of Satguru Partap Singh, father of Jagjit Singh. Many Namdhari followers believe this, too, could be a possible reason for the murder. Dalip Singh said: “My mother had no enemies — she was the peacemaker in this family. I wanted her to be on gaddi (be the sect chief) because if I had accepted it, the family would have been divided…for me, she will always be our satguru. How can I even think of getting our satguru murdered?” About organising a separate bhog ceremony, Dalip Singh said, “I knew I will not be allowed to attend the last rites, or bhog (at Bhaini Sahib), and I do not want to enter forcibly and create a scene. So we will hold bhog on April 9 (Saturday).”

  • JUD RUNS ‘PARALLEL’ SHARIA COURT IN LAHORE

JUD RUNS ‘PARALLEL’ SHARIA COURT IN LAHORE

ISLAMABAD (TIP): Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed-led Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) has set up a Sharia court in Lahore to dispense “speedy justice”, taking up citizens’ complaints and issuing summons carrying a warning of strict action in case of non-compliance, Dawn reported on April 7 .This is the first such parallel judicial system in Pakistan’s Punjab province.

The JuD, a front for banned Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), claimed the court only offers arbitration and resolves disputes in accordance with the Islamic judicial system, but failed to justify the summons. One of the defendants recently refused to appear, and has challenged the court’s authority, calling the summons is sued to him unconstitutional, the report said.

Complainants approach the arbitration court, in the heart of Pakistan, with the hope of speedy justice as litigation, especially in civil cases, is a lengthy and expensive process in the constitutional courts, sources said.

The court has been established at the organisation’s headquarters, Jamia Qadsia, Chauburji, under a Qazi (judge) assisted by Khadmins or court associates. “The complaints are addressed to the chief of the religious organisation who later refers them to the Qazi for further proceedings,” the report said.

The report claimed that JuD’s “Arbitration Court of Sharia” has been summoning defendants in person or through a legal counsel with war nings of strict action under the Sharia laws in case of no response. The summons bear two monograms Darul Qaza Sharia, Jamatud Dawa Pakistan and Saalsi Sharai Adalati-Aalia or the arbitration court of Sharia. Earlier, Sharia courts were established in Kyber Pakhtaunkhawa province by pro-Taliban groups. JuD’s spokesperson Yahya Mujahid said that it was not a parallel system to the constitutional courts of the country .”It is an arbitration court to decide disputes with the consent of the parties,” Mujahid was quoted as saying.

He further said that disputes have been resolved in accordance with Islamic laws, and that offering arbitration to confronting parties is not illegal. He, however, failed to justify issuance of summons carrying a warning of strict action in case of non-compliance.

In one such case regarding a monetary dispute between two property developers, according to Dawn’s report, the Sharia Court has been issuing summons to the defendant, who has not appeared before the Qazi so far. He has written letters to judicial and executive authorities, including chief justice of Pakistan and prime minister, complaining about the unconstitutional summons being issued to him by the religious organisation, the report said. “The letters are yet to be answered whereas the JuD spokesman offers no explanation to the practice of serving summons,” it said.

DIG Haider Ashraf denied having any knowledge about the Sharia Court or any complaint against it. “The police will take action if they received any complaint as the law did not allow any parallel judicial system,” he reportedly said. The JuD claims rendering social welfare services besides running charitable schools and hospitals in calamityhit regions of the country.

Pakistani military launches new offensive following Lahore bombing

ISLAMABAD (TIP): The Pakistani military in coordination with law enforcement agencies launched a new offensive in southern Punjab, officials announced april 6, weeks after a suicide bomber killed more than 70 people in Lahore.

“Coordinated operations are underway against terrorists and hardened criminals,” read a military statement.

The statement also included images of military helicopters hovering over the plains of Punjab and paramilitary troops loading ammunition into trucks and preparing for an operation.

The offensive comes after a Taliban suicide bomber killed 73 people in a popular Lahore park on Easter day. Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, the Taliban faction that carried out the bombing, said Christians were the target of the attack.

The incident illuminated festering extremism in Punjab, the home province of three-time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and provincial authorities said they would launch a crackdown against militant groups in the province long considered a bastion of the establishment.

Christians make up an estimated 1.6 percent of Pakistan’s 20 crore people and have long faced discrimination.

Twin suicide attacks against churches in Lahore killed 17 people in March last year, sparking two days of rioting by thousands of Christians.

The country is still scarred by a Taliban assault on a Peshawar school in 2014 that killed 150 people, mostly children.

A military operation targeting insurgents was stepped up in response. Last year the death toll from militant attacks was the lowest since the Pakistani Taliban was formed in 2007.

Taliban couldn’t erase Pak man’s sense of humor

ISLAMABAD (TIP): A Pakistani man, Shahbaz Taseer, who was held by the Taliban for nearly five years before being abruptly freed this month, is lighting up Twitter with his frank and often-humourous account of his captivity.

Taseer is a son of Salman Taseer, the liberal Punjab governor assassinated in 2011. He was taken hostage a few months after his father was murdered.

Taseer has turned down interview requests but this week he took to Twitter — his late father was also a prolific user and early adopter — to share his story in his own words.

Pakistanis have been riveted as Taseer and his wife Maheen light up the Internet with their funny, loving and often heart-stopping account of his captivity and release.

When asked what he said to his wife the first time he saw her, he replied: “i told you id come back”.

She also described the moment of their reunion: “I was crying with happiness, could hardly speak but hugged him and told him I love him”.

Using the hashtag #AskST, he invited questions from fans eager to find out more about his detention, where according to militant sources, he was shuffled between various extremist groups in Pakistan’s tribal areas.

Asked whether he remained loyal to his favourite football team Manchester United, he replied: “U can’t be a united fan it’s a family”.

His wife later chirped in asking “who is number one, me or @ManUtd?”, with Taseer responding: “You… but they are a VERY close second :)”

Some responses, while light-hearted, hinted at darker times.

“How the heck did you rewire your brain to not be overwhelmed with the negativity?” one user asked.

He responded: “just press delete :)”

Asked whether he was asked to formally join the Taliban he said: “no, they didn’t like my sense of style”, adding that his only friend “was a spider called peter”.

Some details remain confusing, such as when he was asked if he ever thought of trying to run away from his kidnappers. He responded: “only in my dreams which was good enough.”

Taseer also recalled phoning his mother from the restaurant he was recovered from in southwest Balochistan province earlier this month.

He wrote: “i said ‘hey ami i ran away btw the mountain dew is great at saleem hotel kuchlak baluchistan’ she said ‘whose this?’”

Many of the questions centred around how life had changed during his half decade away from civilisation.

Earlier in the week he joked that his wife had compared him to Nicholas Brody, the character played by actor Damien Lewis in US drama “Homeland” — a US Marine turned would-be terrorist after eight years in captivity.

It was a powerful respite to the grim news many Pakistanis have grown accustomed to in the country’s more than decade-long fight against an Islamist insurgency, including Sunday’s bombing of a park in Lahore targeting Christians celebrating Easter that killed dozens of children.

    Pakistani users have responded warmly.

  • Nation salutes Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev on their martyrdom day

Nation salutes Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev on their martyrdom day

23rd March is the day that Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev attained martyrdom. One example of the resoluteness of Bhagat Singh and his associates remains inspirational even today. In order to disgrace Bhagat Singh and his associates, the then British Government informed them,’ If you feel that you should be spared from being hanged, then you must apply for mercy.’ The spirited answer to that advice, as given by Bhagat Singh, was: “The government says that we should apply for mercy. But why should we do so? Are we thieves or dacoits or goondas? We are political prisoners in this war for freedom. The blood of complete freedom is circulating in every blood vessel of ours. Whatever bold action we did was for the sake of freedom alone! We may not be worshippers of non-violence; our path may not be devoid of atrocities but is it not true that we are freedom-fighters? If the government has even a fraction of justice left within it, it has to treat us as political prisoners. We will never beg for mercy.

We do not intend to face this death sentence by saying ‘Do whatever you like but spare us from being hanged’. We dislike even climbing on the foot board meant for hanging. We are brave soldiers and true men!Hence treat us like that by either shooting us with bullets or blast us with cannons. Who wants to face such a feeble sentence as hanging? We request you to respect this last wish of ours!”

    Bhagat Singh | Born: 27th Sept. 1907, Punjab | Hanged on 23rd March 1931

As a freedom fighter, he was considered to be one of the most famous revolutionaries of Indian Independence movement. For this reason, he is often referred to as Martyr Bhagat Singh. At such a young age, if anyone was smiling just before being hanged to death, it was Martyr Bhagat Singh. His uncle, Sardar Ajit Singh as well as his father, were both great freedom fighters, so Bhagat Singh grew up in a patriotic atmosphere.

At an early age, Bhagat Singh started dreaming of uprooting the British Empire. Never afraid of fighting during his childhood, he thought of ‘growing guns in the fields’, so that he could fight the British. The Ghadar Movement left a deep imprint on his mind. Kartar Singh Sarabha, hanged at the age of 19, became his hero. The massacre at Jallianwala Bagh on 13th April, 1919 drove him to Amritsar, where he kissed the earth sanctified by the martyrs’ blood and brought back home a little of the soaked soil. At the age of 16, he used to wonder why so many Indians could not drive away a fistful of invaders.

In search of revolutionary groups and ideas, he met Sukhdev and Rajguru. Bhagat Singh, along with the help of Chandrashekhar Azad, formed the Hindustan Socialist Republican Army (HSRA). The aim of this Indian revolutionary movement was now defined as not only to make Bharat independent, but also to create a socialist Bharat.

A brutal attack by the police on veteran freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai at an anti-British procession caused his death on 17th November 1928, in Lahore. Bhagat Singh was determined to avenge Lajpat Rai’s death by shooting the British official responsible for the killing, Deputy Inspector General Scott.

However he shot down Assistant Superintendent Saunders instead, mistaking him for Scott. Then he made a dramatic escape from Lahore to Calcutta and from there to Agra, where he established a bomb factory.

The British Government responded to the act by imposing severe measures like the Trades Disputes Bill. It was to protest against the passing of the Bill that he threw bombs in the Central Assembly Hall (now our Loksabha) while the Assembly was in session. The bombs did not hurt anyone, but the noise they made was loud enough to wake up an enslaved Nation from a long sleep.

After throwing the bombs, Bhagat Singh and his friend deliberately courted arrest by refusing to run away from the scene. During his trial, Bhagat Singh refused to employ any defense counsel.

Despite great popular pressure and numerous appeals by political leaders of Bharat, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru were accorded the death sentence and hanged in the early hours of 23rd March 1931. Their bodies were cremated on the bank of the Sutlej in Ferozepur. Bhagat Singh was just 23 years old at that time. Old timers say that in many places, not a single hearth fire burned that day.

The last paragraph of the leaflet that he distributed (and wrote) in the Assembly Hall said: “We are sorry that we who attach such great sanctity to human life, we who dream of a very glorious future when man will be enjoying perfect peace and full liberty, have been forced to shed human blood. But sacrifice of individuals at the altar of the Revolution will bring freedom to all, rendering exploitation of man by man impossible. Inquilab Zindabad (Long live the Revolution).”

Sukhdev Thapar | Born: 15th May 1907, Punjab

He was an active member of the HSRA, being one of its senior most leaders. He is known to have started study circles at the National College (Lahore), in order to delve into Bharat’s past as well as to scrutinize the finer aspects of the world’s revolutionary literature. Along with Bhagat Singh and others he started the ‘Naujawan Bharat Sabha’ at Lahore. The main aims of this organization were to activate the youth for the freedom struggle, inculcate a rational scientific attitude, fight communalism and end the practice of untouchability.

His letter to Mahatma Gandhi written just prior to his hanging, protesting against the latter’s disapproval of revolutionary tactics, throws light on the disparities between the two major schools of thought among Indian freedom fighters at that time.

Shivram Rajguru | Born: 1908, Pune

He was born in an average middle-class Hindu Brahmin family at Khed in Pune District in 1908. He came to Varanasi at a very early age where he learnt Sanskrit and read the Hindu religious scriptures. He had a great admiration for Shivaji and his guerrilla tactics.

At Varanasi, he came in contact with revolutionaries. He joined the movement and became an active member of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Army (HSRA). Rajguru had a fearless spirit and indomitable courage. The only object of his adoration and worship was his motherland, for whose liberation, he considered no sacrifice too great. He was a close associate of Chandrashekhar Azad and Bhagat Singh and his field of activity was UP and Punjab, with Kanpur, Agra and Lahore as his headquarters.

Rajguru was a good shot and was regarded as the gunman of the party. He took part in various activities of the revolutionary movement, the most important being Saunder’s murder. Chandrashekhar Azad, Shivram Rajguru, Bhagat Singh and Jai Gopal were deputed for the job. On 17th December 1928, while Saunders came out of his office and started his motor-cycle, he was shot dead in front of the police headquarters at Lahore by Rajguru.

Amarinder’s son gets notice for lying about foreign bank accounts

LUDHIANA (TIP): Chief judicial magistrate Ranjeev Kumar in Ludhiana issued notice to Raninder Singh, the son of Punjab Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh, for lying to the income tax department about his foreign bank accounts.

Acting on a criminal complaint by Amit Dua, income tax deputy director, investigation, against Raninder for giving false information under oath, the court asked him to file a reply on July 26, the next date of hearing.

The income tax department has found that the former chief minister’s son is a direct beneficiary of assets maintained and controlled through foreign business entities. These include accounts with HSBC Private Bank, Geneva. Raninder is also a trustee of the UK-based Jacaranda Trust.

When the department confronted Raninder with this information last year, he denied having any foreign bank accounts.

This led the department to file the complaint under Sections 181 (false statement on oath) and 177 (furnishing false information) under the Indian Penal Code and Section 277 (false statement in verification) of the Income Tax Act.

Supreme Court directs Punjab to maintain status quo SYL canal

NEW DELHI (TIP): In a setback to Punjab, the Supreme Court on March 17 directed maintenance of status quo on land meant for Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal after Haryana alleged that attempts have been made to alter its use by levelling it. The apex court in its interim order also appointed Union Home Secretary and Punjab’s Chief Secretary and Director General of Poloce (DGP) as the ‘joint receiver’ of land and other property meant for the SYL canal till the next date of hearing on March 31. A five-judge Constitution Bench headed by Justice A R Dave passed the order with a hard-hitting observation that “an effort is made to make execution of the decree of this court unexecutable and this court cannot be a silent spectator.”

It passed the order on an urgent application moved by Haryana Government submitting that Punjab Assembly on March 14 passed a bill against the construction of contentious SYL canal providing for transfer of proprietary rights back to the land owners free of cost. Senior advocate Shyam Divan said the bill awaiting Governor’s assent would negate the apex court’s 2004 decree calling for unhindered construction of the canal which will provide share of its water to Haryana. He referred to newsreports with photographs that JCB and earthmoving equipments have been arranged for levelling the land in the Punjab part of the canal and sought ad-interim protection by appointing the ‘court receiver’ and restraining the publication of the assent to the bill in gazette notification.

Haryana’s application was opposed by senior advocates Ram Jethmalani and Rajeev Dhawan, appearing for Punjab, who submitted that the apex court has only advisory jurisdiction and cannot pass interim orders as there was no prima facie case made out and the arguments of the opposite side was based on media reports. However, Dhawan’s submission on media reports did not cut much ice with the bench, which shot back “do you think that what has been stated in the newspapers is incorrect?” ”You could have done something on Monday (the day the bill was passed in Punjab Assembly)”, the bench said adding that if anything happens in between “we will modify our order.”

  • Willful Defaulter Vijay Mallya flees

    Willful Defaulter Vijay Mallya flees

NEW DELHI (TIP): Liquor baron Vijay Mallya, who is facing legal proceedings for allegedly defaulting loans of over Rs 9,000 crores from various banks, had left the country a week back, government informed the Supreme Court, March 9. “I spoke to the CBI a little while ago and it told me that on March 2 he (Mallya) left the country,”

Attorney General (AG) Mukul Rohatgi told the bench comprising Justices Kurian Joseph and R F Nariman. The bench issued notice to Mallya and sought his response within two weeks on pleas filed by a consortium of banks seeking direction for freezing his passport and his presence before the apex court.

Since the court was informed that Mallya has already left the country, probably to UK, the bench allowed the plea of AG that the notice to him can be served through his official Rajya Sabha Email ID, Indian High Commission at London and also through counsel representing him before various high courts, Debt Recovery Tribunal and also through his Company.

Vijay Mallya was hit by a double whammy on Monday, March 7 as a Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT) restrained him from accessing the ?515 crore that he received from the sale of the spirits business to Diageo Plc while the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a money laundering case.

The $75 million deal with Diageo was struck last month to get Mallya to relinquish the chairmanship of United Spirits Ltd (USL), which the British spirits maker now owns. However, Mallya will not be able to get hold of the cash, at least for the time being, with the DRT responding to a petition by SBI and other banks.

If this was not enough, the ED also registered a case against Mallya, and the former chief financial officer of Kingfisher Airlines for fraudulently obtaining a ?900 crore loan from IDBI Bank and laundering the money.

The ‘King of bad times’ : From a flamboyant billionaire to a man who watched his empire go bust, this is how Vijay Mallya lost his ‘monies’:

Here’s what Mallya owes banks: SBI: 1,600 cr PNB: 800 crIDBI: 800 cr Bank of India: 650 cr, Bank of Baroda: 550 cr, United Bank of India: 430 cr, Central Bank of India: 410 cr, UCO Bank: 320 cr, Corporation Bank: 310 cr, State Bank of Mysore: 150 cr, Indian Overseas Bank: 140 cr, Federal Bank: 90 cr, Punjab & Sind Bank: 60 cr, Axis Bank: 50 cr

Assets listed in India: 33% in United Breweries, which is worth Rs 7,000 crore. But more than half of the stake is pledged. 22%interest in Mangalore Chemicals &Fertilizers, which is worth Rs 140 crore. One-third of the shares are pledged. 52%of UB Holdings, a shell company, which has some real estate in Bangalore and other places, but the rentals have already been pledged. Under 1% stake in Bayer Corp Science, but Mallya remains its chairman.

    The rise:

1983 | After his father’s death, Mallya becomes UB group chairman at 28.

1999 | Launches Kingfisher Strong, which changes beer consumption nationally, is still the largest selling brand.

2002 | Nominated to Rajya Sabha.

    The buying spree:

2005 | Launches Kingfisher Airlines (KFA). Buys Shaw Wallace, gaining whisky brands such as Royal Challenge

2006 | Buys Herbertsons, makers of Bagpiper whisky and Romanov vodka.

2007 | Buys F1 team Spyker, renames it Force India. Acquires Air Deccan. Buys British whisky maker Whyte and Mackay for £595m.

2008 | Buys IPL team Royal Challengers Bangalore for $111.6m. UB City comes up in Bangalore.

    The road to ruin:

2012 | KFA staff strike work for nonpayment of salaries, income-tax dept freezes KFA accounts, airline grounds flights. In Oct, government suspends KFA license. British alcoholic beverages firm Diageo agrees to buy majority stake in United Spirits

2013 | Diageo acquires 27% stake in USL for Rs 6,500 crore, but KFA lenders do not get any funds.

2014 | United Bank identifies United Breweries Holdings as wilful defaulter.

2015 | Diageo asks Mallya to step down as chairman of the Indian liquor firm but he refuses.

2016 | Banks move debt recovery tribunal, which restrains Mallya from accessing Rs 515 crore he was to receive from Diageo as settlement after agreeing to quit.

The misery Kingfisher inflicted: Over 1,500 staffers, still on the firm’s payrolls after it stopped operation, not paid? On March 5, employees write an open letter to Mallya, saying his ‘heart is impure’ and he has blood on his hands. They seek PM Narendra Modi’s help to get their dues.

His pearls of wisdom: “The only regret is Kingfisher Airlines is not flying today when the oil price is so low.” “The past few days have witnessed a near hysterical campaign in the media directed against me. All I can say is I hope some sobriety and sense will prevail and truth will not be held hostage to TRPs.”

The treasure trove: Homes in Trump Towers, New York City, and in San Francisco. Game resort in South Africa. A beachfront villa in Goa. Fleet of over 200 luxury vintage cars, a 95m ‘mega yacht’ with a helipad, a Gulfstream private jet.

  • SBI SEEKS VIJAY MALLYA’S ARREST IN KINGFISHER LOAN DEFAULT CASE

SBI SEEKS VIJAY MALLYA’S ARREST IN KINGFISHER LOAN DEFAULT CASE

MUMBAI (TIP): Top state-run lender SBI on Wednesday sought to arrest Vijay Mallya, and also impound his passport, as the bank approached the Debt Recovery Tribunal seeking action against the UB Group promoter for defaulting on loans.

The State Bank of India (SBI), which heads the consortium of 17 lenders to the grounded Kingfisher Airlines, moved the Debt Recovery Tribunal in Bengaluru against the airline’s chairman Mallya in its bid to recover over Rs 7,000-crore dud loans from him.

According to sources, SBI has moved four applications at the DRT, seeking impounding Mallya’s passport, getting him arrested, securing the lenders’ first right on the payout from Diageo and getting full disclosure of his assets in the country and abroad.

The immediate objective of the lenders moving the DRT is to secure a first right on the US$75-million severance package that Mallya will be getting for quitting Diageo-owned United Spirits (USL) as its chairman last week. An SBI official confirmed to PTI that they have moved the DRT seeking a right on the severance package, as the borrower Mallya, who has already been declared by the bank a wilful defaulter, has decided to leave the country and settle down in London.

Mallya and Kingfisher Airlines owed Rs 7,800 crore to a consortium of 17 lenders led by State Bank, which had an exposure of over Rs 1,600 crore to the now defunct airline. Since January 2012, the loan was not serviced.

Other lenders include Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank, Bank of India, Central Bank of India, Federal Bank, Uco Bank and Dena Bank among others. Last year, SBI declared Mallya a wilful defaulter. Last month, Punjab National Bank had also declared him, his group holding company United Breweries Holdings and the long-defunct Kingfisher Airlines as wilful defaulters.

As part of a deal, Diageo said it would pay US$40 million immediately to Mallya with the balance being payable in equal instalments over the next five years. It will also absolve Mallya of all liabilities over alleged financial lapses at the company founded by his family.

  • Hockey India League 2016 Punjab Warriors beat Kalinga Lancers to clinch maiden title

Hockey India League 2016 Punjab Warriors beat Kalinga Lancers to clinch maiden title

RANCHI (TIP): Having lost the final in the last two seasons, the Jaypee Punjab Warriors finally struck gold to become third-time lucky as they clinched their Hockey India League (HIL) title in the fourth edition of the six-team tournament at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium here on Sunday.

The Chandigarh-based outfit beat Kalinga Lancers 6-1 in the summit clash where Armaan Qureshi, Matt Gohdes and Satbir Singh scored a field goal each for the Warriors. Skipper Moritz Fuerste scored the Lancers’ lone goal of the match, coming in a penalty corner. The unique feature of the tournament was that each field goal counted for two.

The Warriors were on the gas right at the start as their forward Armaan Qureshi gave the Punjab team exactly what they needed by scoring a goal as early as in the fourth minute. Qureshi got past two defenders and at the right moment reverse flicked the ball past Lancers’ goalkeeper Andrew Charter, becoming the Warriors’ top goal-scorer of the tournament with four.

The Warriors were clearly the dominant team in the first half of the match, keeping possession and regularly playing in the Lancers’ half of the pitch. Australian Charter was a busy man in the evening as he had to make multiple saves to keep his team in with a chance.

Lancers’ skipper and two-time Olympic champion Fuerste of Germany showed his class in the 24th minute when he managed to put the ball past Warriors goalie Clemons Tristan to make it 1-2 for the Lancers, who qualified for the knockouts for the first time in the HIL.

After the mid-way break, the Warriors came out even more aggressively, continuously pressing the Lancers’ defence deeper into the scoring arc. The efforts finally bore fruit in the 39th minute when forward S.V. Sunil worked out a brilliant ball and passed it to Australia’s Gohdes, who had no difficulty in converting it into a goal.

The score went up to 4-1 in favour of the Warriors thanks to some brilliant work from Sunil and a nice finishing touch from 2014 World Cup-winner Gohdes.

The Warriors did not have to wait long enough as three minutes later Satbir built a fantastic ball, moving past the Lancers’ defenders with quick pace to finally score the last of the match to make it 6-1 in the 42nd minute.

By now the game was beyond the reach of the Bhubaneswar-based team, who seemingly appeared jaded in the last quarter of the match. Just moments later, the hooter blew loudly in the stadium to give the Warriors their first trophy in the four-year history of the tournament.

Earlier in the day, 2014 edition winners Delhi Waveriders defeated last year’s champions Ranchi Rays 2-0 in the third place match. Mandeep Singh’s lone field goal was enough for the Delhi-based team to seal third position in the tournament. The Waveriders had lost the semi-final 1-3 to Jaypee Punjab Warriors here on Saturday. Waveriders’ defender and penalty corner expert Rupinder Pal Singh was named the player of the tournament. (IANS)

  • Pakistan province passes law to protect women against violence

Pakistan province passes law to protect women against violence

ISLAMABAD (TIP): Lawmakers in Pakistan’s largest province on Wednesday gave unprecedented protection to female victims of violence, in a bid to stem a rising tide of gender-related abuse in a country ranked as the world’s third most dangerous place for women.

The new law criminalises all forms of violence against women, whether domestic, psychological or sexual, and calls for the creation of a toll-free abuse reporting hot line and the establishment of shelters. Home to roughly 190 million people, Pakistan sees thousands of cases of violence against women every year, from rape and acid attacks to sexual assault, kidnappings and “honour killings”.

“The instances of violence against women have been on the increase, primarily because the existing legal system does not effectively address the menace and violence by some is perpetrated with impunity,” said the text of the legislation passed by the Punjab assembly. In 2013, more than 5,800 cases of violence against women were reported in Punjab alone, the province where Wednesday’s law was passed, according to the Aurat Foundation, a women’s rights advocacy group.

Those cases represented 74% of the national total that year, the latest for which data is available. The leader of one of Pakistan’s largest orthodox Sunni Muslim seminaries denounced the new law as being in conflict with the Muslim holy book, the Quran. “Attempting to change religious and national values in the name of protecting women is a tragedy that is of great concern,” Muhammad Naeem, head of the Jamia Binoria seminary in the southern city of Karachi, said in a statement. The new law establishes district-level panels to investigate reports of abuse, and mandates the use of GPS bracelets to keep track of offenders.

  • Exodus from Punjab

    Exodus from Punjab

First, let us mourn the death of ‘Sonney di Chidi’ (golden bird) that Punjab once was. It was a prosperous state with abundance in resources. Even more promising was the leadership of those times (somewhat upto 1839) in Maharaja Ranjit Singh. After the last heir of Sikh Misls, Punjab has fallen into attrition; the rate of which has assumed large proportions since the Akali-Congress double trouble after the exit of Britishers. Punjab never really recovered after the Maharaja.

    Teenagers leaving Punjab

More and more teenagers from Punjab want to settle abroad, be it United States, Canada, UK or Australia – problems in Punjab are growing out of hand for parents who find it easier to sell their holdings in order to secure a future for their children abroad.

Young Punjabis flocking abroad signals a deeper problem, which the government does not wish to acknowledge or tackle – one of unemployment, drug abuse, alcohol dependency, economic infrastructure, lack of opportunities to name a few.

The often repeated regimes of Akali Dal & Congress in the past have killed all hopes that Punjabis could think of their child’s future and separately/collectively have been unable to stop rampant corruption, rising drug addiction or bring industry to the state.

Children as young as 12 years of age are seen to be involved in the drug trade, drugs are openly sold and easily available.

How to Pay for a Green Card

A recent investigative story done by Channel 4 NBCNY’s I-Team revealed how teenagers from Punjab are buying a Green Card in the populous Sikh community of Queens in New York. The borough’s family court is suddenly swamped with cases that insiders say are strikingly similar -hundreds of young Punjabi men with stories of months-long journeys from India across the Mexican border in the hands of paid smugglers.

They arrive in court in a hurry and tell a judge how they were abused by a parent.

Under federal law – SIJS (Special Immigrant Juvenile Status) the court can grant special papers which grants statusto an undocumented person under the age of 21 who claims to have been abused or abandoned.

If the petition is approved and the child becomes a lawful permanent resident, he or she will have access to financial aid for college, be able to work legally, be eligible for some public benefits, and be able to apply for US citizenship five years after becoming a permanent resident.

However; one is to keep in mind that the granting of SIJ status is based on allegations of abuse, abandonment or neglect by the applicant’s parents, a person who receives a green card or even ultimately citizenship through the SIJ program cannot petition for a green card on behalf of those parents. Moreover, SIJ program participants cannot petition on behalf of their siblings until they become U.S. citizens through naturalization.

Number of Indians Seeking Asylum in The United States Rising

In a surprising and unexplained trend, there has been a sudden rise in the number of Indian citizens seeking asylum in the US in 2015 compared to the two previous years. The figures were obtained from the US Citizenship and Immigration Services under Freedom of Information Act by North American Punjabi Association executive director Satnam Singh Chahal.

The data reveals some crucial details. While the number of Indians seeking asylum has increased four times in three years, there is a marginal increase in the number of women applicants.

It is generally men who make the treacherous journey with the help of human traffickers from Moscow into South America, and from there into the US through the Mexican border.

The US authorities refused to give the backgrounds of the applicants or why they sought asylum but in the recent past there have been a number of cases of Punjabis illegally reaching the US shores and then asking for asylum.

Chahal, who had interviewed the men, said that all of them had taken help of human traffickers.”Although the real reason behind the rise in asylum seekers from India is not known, a clear trend is noticeable. The way I read it, there is noticeable increase in their numbers after BJP came to power in Delhi in 2014,” said Chahal.

“The reasons can be different from year to year, but the government should also look at the issues of intolerance in the country.”

Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee president Manjit Singh GK, who has been working for review of the black list of Sikhs said that the rise in asylum seekers could be an embarrassment for the country.

While the Indian government should look into the issue, this could also be a short cut for reaching the US for a better life, not necessarily for political reasons,” he said.

    Drug Menace in Punjab

    A key poll issue

Drug addiction is a serious problem in the region of Punjab. One of India’s most prosperous states, the fertile land of the five rivers and nation’s bread basket is having to struggle with a serious problem that is now reaching epidemic proportions.

The reasons for widespread drug addiction in Punjab are many: unemployment and frustrated economic expectations are among the main ones. There is also the fact that pharmaceuticals such as pain relieving opioids and sedatives are easily available from chemists; without prescriptions.

According to some, it is the Punjabi culture for heavy drinking and partying as well as the habit of landowners supplying raw opium to farm laborers to encourage them to work harder, that has contributed to the problem. Most rural households in the state are thought to have atleast one addict.

The fact that there is a steady supply of drugs from across the border is another reason. Heroin is smuggled in from Afghanistan and Punjab is a part of the transit route for drugs.

In recent years there has also been a sharp increase in the rate of HIV infections in the state. This is because the rate of injectable drug users (IDUs) is far higher here than in other states. The national prevalence of HIV is 9% but in Punjab this number is in the region of 26%.

It is estimated that four out of ten men are addicted to some or other drug and that up to 50% of those are young farmers. While 15%of those are addicted to poppy husk (known as bhukki), 20% are addicted to synthetic drugs churned out by pharma companies.

It isn’t just people from the fringes of society that are addicted, students from “good families” are often caught in the toils of drug addiction. A study by the Guru Nanak Dev University suggested that 70% of young Punjabi men could be addicted to the drugs that are easily available, particularly in areas close to the borders.

    Opinion

The fact is that a large mass of Punjab is befooled by the Panthic-Image of Akali-Congress. Punjabis must see ‘religion’ and ‘politics’ as separate entities and the political parties miss no opportunity to mix both of them and garner votes.

The Akalis instead of working for the state are busy aggrandizing their bank accounts making the budgetary situation as bad as one can imagine by any stretch of imagination.

Till the time Punjabis stop flocking to other countries there won’t be sufficient resentment in the masses to seek a change. This migration of punjabis to foreign countries provides a vent to the anger of the masses. As long as this migration is not detered, the pressure cooker won’t blow off.

What a shame is that the birth place of martyrs like Shaheed Bhagat Singh is today filled with people who no longer fight for their rights.

The change must come from within…

In April 2014 it was reported that 44 Punjabi detainees at the El Paso Detention Centre had gone on hunger strike. They said they were all political asylum seekers and alleged persecution by police and political authorities in India due to their political dissent.

The 44 men were arrested by the US authorities for illegally entering the country through the US-Mexico border in 2013.

Chahal, who had interviewed the men, said that all of them had taken help of human traffickers.

Also, a large number of Punjabis had taken asylum in the US and elsewhere during the Khalistan militancy era in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Many are believed to be on a government ‘blacklist’ because of which they don’t get visas to India. This often becomes an issue when political leaders meet NRI groups.

“Although the real reason behind the rise in asylum seekers from India is not known, a clear trend is noticeable. The way I read it, there is noticeable increase in their numbers after BJP came to power in Delhi in 2014,” said Chahal.

“The reasons can be different from year to year, but the government should also look at the issues of intolerance in the country.”

Punjab Governance Reforms Commission chairman Dr Parmod Kumar said that there is no strong factor, which can explain this trend of people fleeing the country and seek asylum in the US.

“Illegal human trafficking can be one of the reasons,” he said.
