Producer Namit Malhotra hasn’t ruled out the possibility of turning Ramayana into a trilogy after all. While the makers settled on a two-part format for Nitesh Tiwari’s ambitious retelling of the epic, the plan could change depending on how audiences respond to the first film. Malhotra has also confirmed that the second instalment, originally scheduled for 2027, will now arrive in theatres during Diwali 2028, giving the team another year to bring the story to the screen.
For those who’ve already watched the first instalment of the epic in theatres, the end credits confirmed that the second part will arrive the year after next.
In an interview with E! ahead of the first film’s release, Malhotra said, “So the idea was, now that we’ve got so much excitement that the world has had, we want to take a little bit more time to make sure that when we present the grand finale, we have a little bit more time to do what we did on Part One.”
He continued, “That extra year is what I genuinely believe we need to do justice for a film of this size. When you see part 2 coming in, that will be a whole other story. We didn’t want to do a rush job or get ahead of ourselves. We want to deliver the finale in the most grand way that it deserves.”
Malhotra said the audience’s response to Part 1 would play a major role in deciding whether there’s more to explore. The producer also pointed out that the team has already created two versions of the first film, with different running times and approaches for Indian and international audiences. One of these was written specifically for English-speaking viewers, with changes to how the story is presented.
