    Fort Worth Gas Leak Leads to Recommended Evacuation

    FORT WORTH, TX (TIP): Residents in North Fort Worth were asked to evacuate their homes due to a gas leak Thursday, May 17 afternoon, officials say.

    In a tweet at 5:15 p.m., the Fort Worth Fire Department asked that residents on Los Padres Court between Basswood Boulevard and Arcadia Trail evacuate north of Arcadia.

    The department recommended evacuations for residents on Los Padres Court, Catlow Court and San Isabel Court.

    A contractor for AT&T struck the gas line when a crew was putting in cable, a spokesman for the Dallas-based company said. The leak seeped into the sanitary sewer system, causing gas to bubble up in homes through sinks and toilets.

    Residents were allowed back into their homes around 7:30 p.m.

    Himesh Gandhi Formally Claims Sugar Land Council Seat in Texas

    HOUSTON(TIP): A well-known Indian American community leader and a politician, Himesh Gandhi, formally won council seat in Sugar Land, Texas on May 5.

    The win is Gandhi’s fourth and final term. He received 100 percent of the 4,353 votes.

    “Thank you to the citizens of Sugar Land for your trust and confidence as I serve my fourth and final term. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve!” Gandhi wrote on Facebook.

    Gandhi was first elected in 2012, when he was 35, the youngest councilman to be elected in a citywide vote.

    He has served on numerous city council committees and was also a member of the task force that spearheaded development of the Smart Financial Center at Sugar Land—an iconic concert and performance hall that opened last year.

    Other successes and projects launched by the city during Gandhi’s previous term include the successful annexations of Greatwood and New Territory, the acquisition of a former prison site for redevelopment, the completion of drainage projects, and the return to normal operations after the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey.

    In 2015, Gandhi was honored by the Houston Business Journal as one of the region’s 40 under 40 young leaders. The Indian Panorama had carried the news then.

    Gandhi earned a B.B.A. from Houston Baptist University and his law degree from the South Texas College of Law Houston. He, his wife Farrah and their son Jaiden live in the Telfair neighborhood.

    Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano throws up “Fountains of lava”, evacuations ordered

    HONOLULU(TIP): A CBS report, Thursday, May 3 said that Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano is releasing red lava into a residential subdivision, prompting the county to order mandatory evacuations. A resident described “fountains of lava” in the community near the volcano.

    The TV Channel quoted Hawaii County spokeswoman Janet Snyder who said Thursday red lava emerged on Mohala Street in the Leilani Estates subdivision. The county is ordering evacuations for homes from Luana Street to Pohohiki Road.

    Residents and social media posts show lava spewing from cracks in roadways. Resident Ikaika Marzo said he could see “fountains” of lava in the community.

    The eruption comes after days of earthquakes rocked the Puna district of the Big Island. Overnight into Wednesday, quakes continued to shake Puna as seismic activity appeared to be moving eastward toward Kapoho, KGMB reports.

    From midnight to 10 a.m. Wednesday, there were more than 45 earthquakes at Kilauea, most of which measured about magnitude 2.0. Altogether in recent days, more than 250 small temblors have been recorded, including a magnitude 4.0 tremor just offshore of Puu Oo early Tuesday.

    Earlier in the week, the crater floor of the Puu Oo vent collapsed. That caused magma to push more than 10 miles downslope toward the populated southeast coastline of the island.

    On Wednesday, cracks were also reported on the road in Leilani Estates, but officials reported they did not pose a lava threat.

    Still, the cracks added to residents’ anxieties as the quakes didn’t let up.

    “Last night, we started having them … about five a minute. It was like that just about all night long,” said Chris Burmeister, who lives in Leilani Estates. “It’ll rumble for a little bit. Rumble for a little bit. And then every now and then, you’ll get just a heavy jolt.”

    Officials have said it’s impossible to predict where an eruption might happen, but areas that could be affected include Nanawele Estates, Leilani Estates and the coastal area of Kapoho, KGMB reports.

    Most of Kilauea’s activity has been nonexplosive, but a 1924 eruption spewed ash and 10-ton rocks into the sky, leaving one man dead.

    Puu Oo’s 1983 eruption resulted in lava fountains soaring over 1,500 feet high. In the decades since, the lava flow has buried dozens of square miles of land and destroyed many homes.

    DALLAS(TIP): Unity is strength. This was the simple yet powerful subject of conversation at this year’s annual BAPS Women’s Conference held at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Dallas, TX, on April 21, 2018. With the thought of unity currently on the minds of many in society, the conference focused on the individual’s role in creating a unified nation and global community. The speakers delved into the qualities of humility and positivity and their roles in initiating a more unified mind-frame.

    Hosted in fourteen cities across North America, the conference aimed to inspire its attendees to bring about change through dialogue and reflection. Shahla Pillai, Manager of Guest Relations at DFW Airport, was the keynote speaker at the conference in Dallas. Reflecting on the importance of the conference, she opined that “Growing up I didn’t have such support…so having women that have paved the way, that can guide us to avoid some of the same pitfalls and give us a better opportunity to better our futures…that alone is a reason to have such events”.

    The conference began with attendees standing up for both the American and Indian national anthems. The presentations then began with Pooja Solanki emphasizing what unity truly means and why it is essential to achieve it. While there are more apparent benefits one can claim from integration, the speaker focused on how the small and incremental actions of individuals can lead to a more unified family, which can in turn influence a community and even society at large.

    The other two speakers for the conference concentrated on two instrumental traits that can be further developed to create unity within our relationships – that of humility and positivity. Affirming that humility is not a fixed trait, but one that should be practiced and developed, Dr. Jyoti Patel discussed the small, everyday steps that can be taken to practice humility. Using her personal experiences and quoting those she gained inspiration from, Rina Rao explained how humility strengthens through service and tolerance. Finally, Gopi Patel closed out the conference with a compelling talk on the power of positivity.

    The speakers, just like the audience, were from various professional and personal diasporas and yet were able to come together to bring about an environment for dialogue for self-reflection and growth. Attendee Julie Mitchell reflected on her experience “it is a beautiful celebration of women and unity and love”.

    The BAPS Women’s Conference was inspired by His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj and encouraged by His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj. The conference highlights the influential role of women in today’s society and also empowers the younger generations by promoting a healthy dialogue around current topics. Before and after the conference, attendees had the opportunity to network with others from the greater community and share their perspective on the talks of the day. Many in attendance felt inspired by the conference and conveyed their motivation to share the word with their family and friends.  The audience left with the message that while unity may seem like a global concept, the power of change, and the power of creating a more unified world lies within everyone.

    North Texas student arrested for planning ‘ISIS-inspired’ mass shooting at mall

    FRISCO, TX(TIP): A North Texas student has been arrested for planning an “ISIS-inspired” mass shooting at a shopping mall, Collin County officials said in a news release.

    Plano resident Matin Azizi-Yarand, 17, was arrested for criminal solicitation of capital murder and making a terroristic threat when officials say he planned a mass shooting at Stonebriar Centre in Frisco and solicited others to assist him in the attack, which was planned for mid-May.

    Collin County officials said Azizi-Yarand was inspired by ISIS.

    In Dec. Azizi-Yarand began communicating online with an FBI Confidential Human Source about his desire to either “make hijah [travel]” or to conduct a terrorist attack within the United States, an arrest affidavit said.

    In January, he began communicating with an undercover FBI agent, to whom he joked about getting a knock on his door and getting big smiles from men in suits.

    When discussing potential places for the attack, he mentioned school as the “perfect place for an attack,” the affidavit said. Azizi-Yarand wrote a speech with his “message for America,” in which he described his plan to attack the shopping mall.

    Azizi-Yarand sent more than $1,400 to other individuals to buy weapons and tactical gear, the news release said.

    “We are fortunate that the brave men and women of local and federal law enforcement work around the clock to prevent acts of terrorism and mass shootings,” said Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis. “I’d like to thank the FBI’s North Texas Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Frisco and Plano Police Departments for their efforts in this case and their vigilance in protecting the citizens of Collin County.”

    This case will be prosecuted by the Collin County District Attorney’s Office. If convicted, the 17-year-old could face life in prison.

    Azizi-Yarand is in custody with bonds totaling at $3 million.

    Indian American arrested in Texas for trying to hire hitman to kill ex-lover and family

    DALLAS(TIP): An Indian American man was arrested last week for allegedly trying to hire a hitman to kill four people, including his ex-girlfriend.

    According to the official press release of the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, Rajesh Bakshi, 54, was arrested on April 17, after his plot to murder four Houston residents was foiled by an undercover police officer who pretended as the hitman.

    Bakshi, a jilted-lover, wanted to kill his ex-girlfriend, her current boyfriend and her parents, and hired a hitman by paying a down payment of $1,500, said DA’s office.

    “This operation saved lives in a very sensitive situation,” District Attorney Kim Ogg said. “Imagine how bad this could have been had it not been uncovered before it got to a real hitman.”

    The DA’s office said Bakshi has been harassing the woman, whom he dated some time ago, for months before hiring a killer to wipe her and her family.

    The woman reported to the court that Bakshi has been subjecting her to violence while they were in a relationship and after being rejected he started harassing her and the family.

    It has been reported in the court document that the undercover police official disguised as a hitman was instructed by Bakshi to sprinkle cocaine near the bodies, once he completes his contract.

    He also reportedly guided the contract killer on the pattern and method in which each member on the hit list has to be murdered. Bakshi insisted the police officer also take photographs of the victims once his mission is complete.

    When he was arrested, Bakshi had nearly $13,000 in cash with him. If found guilty of solicitation of capital murder, Bakshi may face life imprisonment.

    Bakshi, who is an employee at Dixie Corner Store, lives in Pearland with his wife, a 14-year-old son and twin daughters. His bail is set at $150,000 for each count.

    Bakshi’s lawyer has requested the court to put his bail at $30,000. The lawyer told the court that he has a history of health issues, including diabetes and neurological disorders.

    Bakshi, an Indian citizen, has also been asked to surrender his travel documents.

    DALLAS (TIP): Indian American Barry Patel has been inducted into 2018 Rio Grande Valley Walk of Fame at State Farm Arena which was sponsored by the City of Hidalgo, Texas, according to a Valley Morning Star report.

    Patel was nominated by the South Padre Island Chamber of Commerce for the impact he has had on the community.

    Patel has built seven hotels on South Padre Island and owns a total of 22 hotels in the Valley which has resulted in $400 million revenue with employment for 500 to 600 people.

    Patel is also dedicated to the community of South Padre Island as he has served on numerous committees throughout the years and has been the Mayor of South Padre Island for the last three, while he continues to share his vision for the future of South Padre.

    He is currently constructing a new Marriot Hotel on the Island and his numerous development projects have made the Island a premier tourist destination as well as a beautiful home to its residents.

    Patel has also made the beaches of South Padre Island more beautiful and safe.

    According to a Valley Morning Star report, Patel has been supporting local non-profit organizations, community events and public organizations, and currently serves as a Chairman on the Cameron County Beach & Dune Protection Committee along with being an active member of the Asian American Hotel Owner’s Association.

    Patel has also been recognized by the RGV Hispanic Chamber, the Indian Association of the RGV, the Gujarati Samaj RGV, the South Padre Island Chamber of Commerce and the RGV Partnership.

    He has a Bachelors in Pharmacy from the University of Bradford in England, he began his career as a pharmacist from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and was registered in Texas, Florida and New York.

    Patel’s family includes five brothers and one sister, together they all have 11 children and six grandchildren, according to a Valley Morning Star report.

    Patel is married to Jayshree Patel.

    India’s Reliance Sells Texas Shale Assets For $100MM

    MUMBAI (TIP): Reliance Industries Ltd said on Tuesday, March 27, its unit would sell some of its shale assets in the United States to privately held Sundance Energy Inc for $100 million, as the Indian oil-to-telecom conglomerate moves closer to exit U.S. shale investments.

    The sale includes Reliance’s interest in the assets in the Eagle Ford shale in Texas, it said in a statement.

    U.S.-based Pioneer Natural Resources Co, which was a partner in the asset, also exited the blocks.

    In November 2014, Reliance and Pioneer announced exiting their stake in shale oil and gas transportation and distribution joint venture, which analysts had said was a precursor to Reliance’s move to exit U.S. shale operations.

    The deal, which is expected to close in the first quarter of fiscal 2019, is the second such sale by the Mukesh Ambani-backed Reliance in the United States.

    In October, the Reliance sold a similar asset block in the Marcellus shale region in northeastern and central Pennsylvania.

    East Coast, Texas employ highest number of H1B workers: Report

    WASHINGTON (TIP): East Coast and Texas metro areas in America employed the highest number of H-1B visa workers, majority of them Indians, between 2010 and 2016, a Pew report has said, debunking the popular presumption that the Silicon Valley had such a distinction.

    According to the Pew Research Centre, an American think-tank, about 247,900 H-1B visa approvals–29 per cent of the nation’s total–went to employers in the New York City metro area from fiscal 2010 to 2016, the most in recent years for which data are available at the metropolitan level.

    “The employment of high-skilled foreign workers with H-1B visas has centered on large East Coast metropolitan areas for fiscal years 2010 to 2016. In addition, these foreign workers have made up a significant part of the workforces in several Texas metro areas,” it said in an analysis of the previously unpublished metro-level government data of H-1B visa approvals on Thursday.

    The figures were obtained by the center through a public records request.

    The Dallas and Washington metro areas got 74,000 and 64,800 approvals respectively, the next highest totals along with Boston’s 38,300 approvals.

    The data, obtained from US Citizenship and Immigration Services, include details of those approved for an H-1B visa.

    When looking at the footprint of high-skilled foreign workers by metro area, Texas’ College Station stands far above the rest, with about 32 H-1B approvals per 100 workers.

    According to report, more than 99 per cent of the metro area’s H-1B approvals went to employees of Cognizant Technology Solutions Corporation, whose US headquarters are in College Station.

    No other metro area had more than five H-1B approvals per 100 workers.

    “The San Jose, California metro area, home of Silicon Valley, trailed the leading metro area on these measures, despite being home to some of the world’s most famous technology companies. The San Jose metro area had 22,200 H-1B approvals from fiscal 2010 to 2016, which amounted to two approvals per 100 workers,” the report said.

    The US government approved more than 859,600 applications in fiscal 2010-2016.

    While nationwide, foreign workers approved for H-1B visas earned an average of USD 80,600 in fiscal 2010-2016, Bridgeport in Connecticut had the highest average salary of USD 100,200 of all metro area, followed by Seattle with USD 98,100 and Phoenix USD 97,100.

    In College Station, the Texas metro area with the greatest concentration of H-1B workers in its workforce, the average salary in 2010-2016 was USD 82,600, the report said.

    About half (49 per cent) of H-1B approvals in recent years have gone to foreign workers with an advanced degree (Master’s, professional or doctorate) earned either in the US or internationally, it said.

    The H1-B visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows US companies to employ foreign workers in specialty occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise.

    Police: Austin bomber left 25-minute confession video on phone

    AUSTIN, TEXAS (TIP): A CNN report says that as the Austin bomber sensed that authorities were closing in on him on Tuesday, March 20, night, he took out his cell phone and recorded a 25-minute video confessing to building the explosive devices — but didn’t explain why he targeted his victims, interim Austin police Chief Brian Manley said.

    “It is the outcry of a very challenged young man talking about challenges in his life that led him to this point,” the interim chief said. “I know everybody is interested in a motive and understanding why. And we’re never going to be able to put a (rationale) behind these acts,” Manley told reporters Wednesday, March 21 night.

    The video made by Mark Anthony Conditt, whose string of package bombs killed two people and wounded five in Texas, was found on his cell phone when police recovered his body Wednesday morning. The cell phone was in Conditt’s possession at the time of his death, police said.

    Manley says that Conditt did not make any terror- or hate-related references in the confession.

    Hours after he made the video, police found Conditt leaving a hotel. They followed him until they made a move to stop him from getting on an interstate and Conditt ended up in a ditch.

    Authorities say Conditt, 23, killed himself with his last explosive device.

    Federal agents went to the bomber’s home Wednesday while police interviewed his roommates, attempting to determine whether any bombs remained and if Conditt acted alone.

    Hindus term Holi shoes launched by Pharrell Williams & Adidas as “inappropriate”

    DALLAS (TIP): Hindus feel that Holi footwear collaboratively launched by American singer Pharrell Williams and multinational sportswear corporation Adidas is trivialization of traditions-concepts-symbols-beliefs of Hinduism.

    Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement urged Pharrell Williams and Adidas CEO Kasper Rorsted to rename their Holi shoes which many Hindus felt were highly insensitive as religious festival of Holi was linked to various deities; and offer formal apology.

    Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, indicated that Pharrell Williams and Adidas should have done some homework before taking Hinduism concepts frivolously and using these to make a fashion statement and sell shoes for mercantile greed, some of which contain leather.

    Hinduism was the oldest and third largest religion of the world with about 1.1 billion adherents and a rich philosophical thought and it should not be taken frivolously. Symbols of any faith, larger or smaller, should not be mishandled, Rajan Zed noted.

    Improper usage of Hinduism concepts or symbols or imagery for commercial or other agenda was not okay as it might be painful to many devotees. Hindus were for free artistic expression and speech as much as anybody else if not more. But faith was something sacred and attempts at trivializing it hurt many followers, Zed added.

    Twelve Holi shoes, ranging between $95 and $250, appear on Adidas website; five of which are “coming soon”, six are “new” and one is “sold out”. General release date is March 16, while pre-release was on March two. Adidas states: “inspired by a Hindu festival, artist Pharrell Williams designs these shoes”. Adidas describes Holi as ancient spiritual festival.

    Joie de vivre festival of Holi welcomes the beginning of spring and starts about ten days before the full moon of Phalguna. The ceremonies include the lighting of the bonfires, during which all evils are symbolically burnt. Holi also commemorates the frolics of youthful Lord Krishna; celebrates the death of demoness Putana, burning of demoness Holika, and destruction of Kama by Shiva. Holi fell on March two this year.

    Adidas, headquartered in Herzogenaurach (Germany) and whose history goes back to 1924, claims to “produce more than 850 million product units every year”. “Creating the New” is its 2020 strategy. Adidas—Pharrell Williams collaboration is said to be in its fourth year.

    Indian American Sri Preston Kulkarni finishes first in Texas 22nd district

    HOUSTON , TX (TIP): Indian American Sri Preston Kulkarni finished first in the Democratic primary in Texas’ 22nd congressional district with nearly 32 percent of the vote.

    He will now have to face fellow Democrat Letitia Plummer in the May 22 runoff to earn the right to take on the incumbent GOP Rep. Pete Olson.

    According to Texas election law, if a candidate doesn’t get more than 50 percent of the votes, there will be a runoff between the top two finishers.

    With all the 129 precincts reporting, Kulkarni received 9,466 votes, while Plummer got 7,230 votes (24.3 percent). Mark Gibson, the Democratic nominee in 2016, finished last in a field of five, with 3,046 votes (10.2 percent). The other two candidates in the race, Steve Brown and Margarita Johnson, received 6,246 (21 percent) and 3,767 (12.7 percent) votes, respectively.

    Olson, who has been representing the district since 2009, was the winner of the Republican primary, trouncing his nearest rival by nearly 65 percentage points.

    Kulkarni, a former US diplomat who served in Iraq and Russia, among other places, had expressed cautious optimism ahead of the primaries.

    But his acknowledgement, two weeks before the election, that he was arrested at the age of 18, in 1997, for possessing less than a gram of cocaine may have denied Kulkarni outright victory on March 6th  night.

    The charges were dropped after a two-year probation — which is usual for first-time drug offenders.

    Acknowledging the incident, the candidate said it was due to youthful indiscretion and he did it at a time when his father was terminally ill and he was going to through a difficult time.

    “We should not be stigmatizing our youth for the rest of their lives,” Kulkarni said.

    His father Venkatesh Kulkarni, a professor and novelist, died in 1998 after battling leukemia for a year. His mother Margaret Preston Kulkarni is from West Virginia.

    If elected, the biracial Kulkarni will become the first Indian American congressman from the state of Texas.

    He is one of the nearly two-dozen Indian Americans who are running for Congress this year.
