AAPI Heritage Month: Honoring Our Heroes

WASHINGTON, D.C. (TIP): From the first female president of Taiwan to the personal stories of immigrants, Honoring Our Stories: AAPI Heritage Month celebrates the achievements of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders and their contributions to the arts, history and US culture.

The WNET Group programming lineup for May includes A Life Reimagined: The George Masa Story, about a Japanese immigrant and his photographs that helped define the identity of the Great Smoky Mountains; American Masters – In the Making: Ani Liu: Eye Heart Womb, a study of the New York-based artist’s creations at the intersection of art, science and technology; and Great Performances – Now Hear This: The Composer is Yoo a spotlight on Scott Yoo’s journey to compose a piece of music. All three programs are currently streaming on thirteen.org.

Two Independent Lens documentaries will premiere on THIRTEEN this month: Light of the Setting Sun (Monday, May 18 at 10 p.m.) looks at mental illness passed down through four generations of a Chinese family, and Third Act (Monday, May 25 at 10 p.m.) profiles father and son filmmakers who explore art, trauma, and legacy. Both will stream on thirteen.org after their premieres.
