Indian-Origin Researcher Finds Out Why Red Colour Evokes More Mischief

NEW YORK: Certain personality types are more likely to rebel rather than comply when seeing the colour red, suggests a study led by an Indian-origin researcher.

The study was inspired by a problem faced by a Dutch child helpline that offered free counselling to children aged 8 to 18.

The Dutch child helpline that ran the counselling service were frustrated because of the high percentage of prank calls they received who had no interest in genuine counselling.

Researchers launched an experiment that showed three different colours on the chat screen while callers were on hold for a counsellor. They expected that red would reduce the number of prank chats.

“To our surprise, the prank chatting was higher with the red colour background than the white or blue. Prank chatting occurred about 22 per cent of the time with the red background, compared to 15 per cent for the white or blue,” said Ravi Mehta, Assistant Professor, University of Illinois.

The researchers realised that the colour red can increase non-compliant behaviour in people with sensation seeking personality types.

To test whether personality type influenced the response to red, the researchers conducted another study. In this experiment, college students completed an online questionnaire to assess their level of sensation seeking.

They answered questions to evaluate their attitude toward compliant behaviour and the questions were presented on either a red or white screen. People high in sensation seeking who viewed the red background preferred statements that were resistant to compliant behaviour. This did not happen when they saw a white background.

The findings suggest that the assumptions about the colour red may not apply to everyone and this could have implications for things like anti-smoking and safe sex campaigns.

“Using red to promote these preventative health measures might not work for people who are high in sensation seeking, and it might even backfire,” added Mehta.

Red could help some people comply with health eating recommendations, but for high sensation seeking personality types, this may not be the colour of choice, suggested the study published in the Journal of Consumer Psychology.

  • Tulsi Gabbard Asks California Board To Describe Hinduism Accurately

Tulsi Gabbard Asks California Board To Describe Hinduism Accurately

Tulsi Gabbard, the first ever Hindu elected to the US House of Representatives, has asked a Californian educational board to give Hinduism its due place in school text books and not to describe it inaccurately as ‘religions of ancient India’.

California State Board of Education is in final stages of revising and updating the K-12 History-Social Science Framework for public schools.

In a letter ahead of their final hearing on Thursday, Ms Gabbard – who represents the Democratic Party from Hawaii – urged the board to preserve Hindu history and identity by restoring all references to “Hinduism” that were removed or replaced with the ahistorical and inaccurate phrase, like “religions of Ancient India, including but not limited to early Hinduism”.

Just as other religions, including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Buddhism are given their own separate and distinct space for discussion in the Framework, so should Hinduism.

“Replacing Hinduism with the term ‘religions of Ancient India, including but not limited to early Hinduism’ is not only inaccurate, but it will cause confusion for students and teachers alike,” she said in her letter dated July 8, a copy of which was obtained by news agency PTI.

In the letter, Ms Gabbard also urged the board to acknowledge the positive roles played by women in Ancient Indian and Hindu society.

“While it is important to discuss the existence of patriarchies in ancient civilisations, it is also critical to discuss the positive contributions and unique roles played by women in those societies,” she noted.

“In the context of Ancient India, Hindu women were able to perform their own religious rites and also authored the Vedas, Hinduism’s sacred texts.

“The framework should thus acknowledge these historical facts when describing the roles of women in ancient Indian society,” she argued.

Ms Gabbard asked the California Board to accurately represent the caste-system in the framework by not depicting it as a defining feature or a foundational religious belief of Hinduism.

“While caste-based discrimination is a reality that must be dealt with, it goes against the essence of Hindu teachings and scriptures, which posit that divinity is inherent in all beings,” she said.

Ms Gabbard said as the first and only serving Hindu-American Member of Congress, she has worked actively throughout her many years of service to promote diversity, equality, and pluralism.

“I firmly believe in the significance of creating an education system and textbooks that uphold these important American values,” she said.

Meanwhile, in another letter to the board, some two-dozen Indian-American organisations requested “fairness and equity” in the way Hinduism and Ancient India are taught in comparison to other world religions and civilisations.

“Hinduism and Indian history are taught to 6th and 7th graders in an outdated, inaccurate, and stereotyped manner. The teachings and histories of other religions are highlighted positively, while Hindu teachings are oversimplified and inaccurate,” the letter said.

“Gender bias, subjugation and discrimination are only conflated with Hinduism, in spite of their presence in every religion’s history. And Hinduism’s pluralistic ethos, concept of spiritual unity of everyone and everything, and contributions of women are ignored,” these organisations said.

  • NAINITAL: THE LAKE DISTRICT

    NAINITAL: THE LAKE DISTRICT

A beautiful emerald lake surrounded by green hills, quaint old cottages and markets , and a web of walking tracks—there are plenty of picturesque places to visit in Nainital. One of the most popular hill destinations in India , Nainital is also a part of the ‘lake district’ of the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand , with lakes such as Bhimtal , Sattal and Naukuchiatal in the vicinity. Nainital’s charms include everything from boating and sailing to old temples and heritage buildings, and of course, scenic views at every other step. Here’s your guide to the hill town’s most captivating spots.

    NAINITAL-

    NAINI LAKE

This beautiful lake lies at the heart of Nainital, with its waters reflecting the colour of the surrounding green hills. The hill station itself is divided into parts: Mallital, the northern side of the lake, and Tallital, the southern end of the lake. Boating in the lake is a favourite tourist pastime. There are rowboats and pedal boats available at various spots. For a more thrilling alternative, try sailing on the lake with a small yacht. The Nainital Boat House Club has facilities for renting yachts, guided by a boatman. A promenade circles the entire lake and is a good stretch for walking, taking in the views and the cool breeze from the lake.

    NAINA DEVI TEMPLE

Perched on the banks of Naini Lake, this temple plays a central role in the origin myths surrounding Nainital. It is believed that after the death of his wife Sati, the Hindu god Shiva was so distraught that he began a tandava dance of cosmic destruction. In order to stop him, Sati’s body was scattered all over the earth. This was the exact spot where her eye fell, creating the lake. The temple’s open courtyard also offers scenic views and cool breeze from the lake.

    RAJ BHAWAN

Also known as Governor’s House, this was the official residence of the Governor of North-West Province in colonial India. It is now the residence of the Uttarakhand Governor, and is one of the few Raj Bhawans open to the public. Built towards the end of the 19th century, the imposing building is spread over an area of 220 acres. Its Gothic-style architecture was inspired by the Buckingham Palace.

The two-storey mansion contains around 113 rooms, but visitors are only allowed in its vast lawns and in the 18-hole golf course within its premises. Constructed by the British in 1924, the golf course is set around a scenic forest , and is home to several rare species of flora and fauna. Visitors can play a game of golf for a small fee or lounge in its clubhouse and restaurants.NAINITAL-2

    GURNEY HOUSE

Located on Ayarpatta Hill, this beautiful cottage was the former residence of British hunter, conservationist, and beloved writer Jim Corbett. This British-style building was built in the 19th century by the Corbett family. Jim Corbett lived here with his sister Margaret between 1920 and 1947, following which, they left for Kenya. During his time here, Corbett famously hunted man-eating tigers in the Kumaon region, and penned several books based on his experiences. The house has been carefully preserved, and still has Corbett’s possessions, including his trophies, furniture, books, and boat. It is now a private property, but informal tours can be arranged by contacting the owners via phone or email.

    TIFFIN TOP

The panoramic beauty of soft white clouds, rocky peaks, emerald jungles, and green verdant valleys from Tiffin Top can not be put into words. The place is only about 4 km from the heart of Nainital and makes for a wonderful trek. Alternately, you may go there on horseback. Tiffin Top is also known as Dorothy’s seat as it was built in the memory of an English artist name Dorothy Kellet by her family. With so much to offer, no wonder, the place is a delight for dozens of artists, photographers, and nature enthusiasts.

    SNOW VIEW

With a towering height of 2,270 metres, this hilltop is an old tourist favourite for its beautiful views of the surrounding hills. Situated at a distance of 2.5 kilometres from the town, it is easily accessible by an aerial ropeway, which connects Snow View point with Mallital in Nainital. There’s an amusement park with bumper car ride for kids, and stalls offering tea and snacks. You can also trek from here to Naina Peak or China Peak, which is the highest peak in Nainital and also offers stunning views of snow-clad Himalayas.

  • BREXIT FALLOUT – David Cameron to resign Wednesday as Theresa May takes over

BREXIT FALLOUT – David Cameron to resign Wednesday as Theresa May takes over

British Prime Minister David Cameron is expediting his departure from 10 Downing Street, paving the way for Home Secretary Theresa May to take the reins and steer the country out of EU.
Theresa May promised to build a “better Britain” and to make the UK’s EU exit a “success” after she was announced as the new Tory leader and soon-to-be PM.

Speaking outside Parliament, Mrs May said she was “honoured and humbled” to succeed David Cameron, after her only rival in the race withdrew on Monday.

Mr Cameron will tender his resignation to the Queen after PMQs on Wednesday.

May was officially named Conservative Party leader and successor to Cameron “with immediate effect” Monday, said Graham Brady, chair of the 1922 Committee, a collection of Conservative members of Parliament key to electing the party leader.

Cameron had already announced he would step down by October after failing to convince the country to remain in the EU in the divisive June 23 referendum that sent shockwaves through Britain’s political establishment.

But Monday, May’s only remaining rival to replace Cameron — Energy Minister Andrea Leadsom — pulled out of the race following controversy over comments she made about motherhood and leadership.

Obviously, with these changes, we now don’t need to have a prolonged period of transition. And so tomorrow I will chair my last Cabinet meeting. On Wednesday I will attend the House of Commons for Prime Minister’s questions,” Cameron told reporters Monday outside 10 Downing Street.

“And then after that I expect to go to the palace and offer my resignation. So we will have a new prime minister in that building behind me by Wednesday evening.”

The vote between May and Leadsom was supposed to go to the wider Conservative Party of 150,000 people, but being the sole candidate, May sidestepped the party rule.

Cameron welcomed Leadsom’s decision to drop out of the race and said he was confident May would steer the country in the right direction, calling her strong and competent, and offering her his full support.

  • Sanders to Join Clinton on Campaign Trail; Media Reports

Sanders to Join Clinton on Campaign Trail; Media Reports

Bernie Sanders has apparently decided to turn over a new leaf.

Sanders will join Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, at a campaign event in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on Tuesday where he’s poised to endorse Clinton.

The rivals will come together to “discuss their commitment to building an America that is stronger together and an economy that works for everyone, not just those at the top,” the campaigns announced in statements early Monday.

The appearance comes after the firebrand Vermont senator scored several symbolic victories at the Democratic Platform Committee meeting in Orlando, Florida.

Although Sanders has not yet conceded to Clinton, nor endorsed her, some expect such language at the rally as Sanders was successful in including causes like climate change and $15 minimum wage on the Democratic platform over the weekend. “I think it’s fair to say that the Clinton campaign and I, our campaign, are coming closer and closer together,” Sanders said Saturday.

In the February primary, Sanders beat Clinton in New Hampshire by 22 points. Jeva Lange

  • ‘Crown Prince of Terror’ – Hamza bin Laden son of Osama bin Laden enters Terrorism

‘Crown Prince of Terror’ – Hamza bin Laden son of Osama bin Laden enters Terrorism

One of the sons of Osama Bin laden, 23-year-old Hamza, is calling for terrorist attacks to avenge his father’s death, according to an audio released by al-Qaida’s media arm.

In the audio message posted online, The Crown Prince of Terror has threatened revenge against the United States for assassinating his father, the slain al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, and promises to continue the global militant group’s fight against the United States and its allies in the 21-minute speech entitled “We Are All Osama,” according to the SITE Intelligence Group.

Hamza’s whereabouts are unknown and is thought to have been groomed by his 9/11 mastermind father.

This is not the first time that Hamza calls for terrorist attacks. Previously, he hashad incited attacks on on London, Washington, Paris and Tel Aviv in an audio message released by al-Qaida.

Hamza says al-Qaida will continue waging jihad, or holy war, against the US in response to its ‘oppression’ of Muslims.

‘If you think that your sinful crime that you committed in Abbottabad has passed without punishment, then you thought wrong,’ he says, referring to his father’s May 2011 death during a US raid at his compound in Afghanistan.

“We will continue striking you and targeting you in your country and abroad in response to your oppression of the people of Palestine, Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Somalia and the rest of the Muslim lands that did not survive your oppression,” Hamza said.

“As for the revenge by the Islamic nation for Sheikh Osama, may Allah have mercy on him, it is not revenge for Osama the person but it is revenge for those who defended Islam.”

Osama bin Laden was killed at his Pakistani hideout by U.S. commandos in 2011 in a major blow to the militant group which carried out the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

Documents recovered from bin Laden’s compound and published by the United States last year alleged that his aides tried to reunite the militant leader with Hamza, who had been held under house arrest in Iran.

hamzaHamza, now in his mid-twenties, was at his father’s side in Afghanistan before the 9/11 attacks and spent time with him in Pakistan after the U.S.-led invasion pushed much of al Qaeda’s senior leadership there, according to the Brookings Institution.

Introduced by the organization’s new chief Ayman al-Zawahiri in an audio message last year, Hamza provides a younger voice for the group whose aging leaders have struggled to inspire militants around the world galvanized by Islamic State.

  • NYCEDC ANNOUNCES 1.1 MILLION SQUARE FEET OF NEW OFFICE SPACE FOR LONG ISLAND CITY

NYCEDC ANNOUNCES 1.1 MILLION SQUARE FEET OF NEW OFFICE SPACE FOR LONG ISLAND CITY

July 11, 2016 (TIP) NYC | New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) today announced the closing of a deal with Tishman Speyer to develop two new office towers providing 1.1 million square feet of much needed commercial space in Long Island City. The project will bring more than 1,500 construction jobs and more than 2,000 permanent jobs to Western Queens. In addition, more than 800,000 square feet of the available office space in the development has been pre-leased, including 250,000 square feet to WeWork.

The new commercial project, located on Jackson Avenue from Queens Boulevard to 42nd Road, includes two 27-story towers designed by Raul De Armas of MdeAS Architects. Construction will commence in early 2017 with completion anticipated in 2019. The towers will be connected by a four-story podium featuring a dynamic mix of retail, complemented by a food hall, restaurant, and parking garage, providing valuable amenities to local workers and residents in the vibrant mixed use neighborhood.

This project is the latest effort by the City of New York to bring jobs to Long Island City, and to grow the community as an innovation hub anchored by the Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island. The 1.1 million square feet of office space will also help meet growing demand, with an NYCEDC analysis expecting the city to need up to 60 million square feet of new commercial space by 2025.

“This project will be a major job generator for Long Island City,” said Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development Alicia Glen. “We are focused on growing good jobs across the outer boroughs and meeting the demand for new office space. What rises at this site will not only spur our economy, but make Queens Plaza a more dynamic place to live and work.”

“Long Island City continues to emerge as a vibrant hub of jobs and economic activity,” said NYCEDC President Maria Torres-Springer. “These new towers will bring 2,000 permanent jobs to Western Queens, and represent a major step forward in solidifying Long Island City as a premier business district.”

“Thanks to the City of New York’s investment in the area’s infrastructure, enlightened policy decisions and the active support of the New York City Economic Development Corporation, the local community and its elected officials, Long Island City has become a model for 21st Century urban development,” said Tishman Speyer CEO Rob Speyer. “Tishman Speyer is proud to continue our role in unlocking the area’s full potential as one of the most dynamic, live-work-play neighborhoods, not just in Queens but in all of New York City.”

NYCEDC and Tishman Speyer previously partnered on a 21-story, 662,000 square-foot Class A office tower on the corner of Queens Plaza and 28th Street. The office portion of that tower, which was completed in 2011, is 100-percent occupied by the New York City Department of Health. The acquisition and development of the remainder of the block represents the completion of the City of New York’s vision for the transformation of what had once been an underutilized public parking garage into a vibrant job hub in Western Queens.

Today’s announcement builds on the ongoing efforts of the de Blasio Administration to invest in Long Island City as a live-work-play community and a new center for the 21st century economy. In February, NYCEDC began soliciting proposals for a catalytic, mixed-use development on two City-owned sites on the Long Island City waterfront, with a combined 1.2 million square feet of buildable space. This was the first time the City had issued a commercial-focused RFP along the LIC waterfront since the 2001 rezoning, and the RFP specifically asks respondents to maximize the amount of commercial space. The City’s goal for the sites is to deliver 300,000 square feet or more of office and light manufacturing space; between 700 and 1,000 units of housing, many of which will be affordable; and more than an acre of waterfront open space and a school for the LIC community.

And last November, Mayor Bill de Blasio broke ground on new infrastructure for Phase II of Hunter’s Point South, the largest new housing complex built in New York City in nearly forty years. Phase II will create nearly 3,000 new apartments, at least 60 percent of which will be affordable to low-, moderate-, and middle-income families. 2,000 units of housing are already under construction on Phase I of the project.

  • Haters, get over it: Hillary Clinton isn’t going to jail over emails, Benghazi

Haters, get over it: Hillary Clinton isn’t going to jail over emails, Benghazi

On the heels of Independence Day, the FBI gave America a belated 240th birthday present: Hillary Clinton won’t be going to prison over Emailgate.

    Haters, get over it.

The anti-Hillary crowd has been poking us with that stick during her entire presidential campaign, casting doubt on her viability, planting innuendo about her character and working nonstop to make us think that they somehow knew something the rest of us didn’t.

Tuesday, investigators announced that Clinton did nothing criminally wrong by using her personal email account while handling classified information as secretary of state. It removed a potentially damaging legal barrier from the campaign trail and cleared a pile of rubbish from her path to the White House. And it happened just in the nick of time.

Think of it this way: A President Hillary Clinton is the only thing standing in the way of a President Donald Trump.

This isn’t necessarily the gift that everyone had hoped for. And it didn’t come wrapped in a tidy, cheerful package. It fact, it was handed over to us in a rather messy heap. No one expects every American to be excited about it. But over time, many of us likely will come to appreciate it.

The email scandal was supposed to be the smoking gun in the Republicans’ two-year Benghazi probe. As it turned out, the conspiracy theories cracked wide open under the microscope and exposed the Benghazi inquest for exactly what it was – an $8 million taxpayer-funded Republican campaign to derail Clinton’s presidential prospects.

Obama campaigns with Clinton after FBI rule out criminal charges over ’emailgate’

They were once bitter political rivals but Hillary Clinton now has outgoing President Barack Obama backing her in the race to the White House. (Euronews)

As hard as they tried, congressional Republicans couldn’t come up with a strand of proof that Clinton had been derelict in her duties as secretary of state concerning the 2012 attacks in Libya that killed four Americans. There was nothing in their 800-page report issued last week that proved she engaged in professional misconduct.

Still, the Republican smear campaign has caused major collateral damage, most notably among Democrats. Some in her own party have bought into Trump’s “crooked Hillary” hype and have done their fair share of spreading the venom.

So far, former Bernie Sanders supporters can’t seem to muster any enthusiasm for Clinton, the person most likely to be at the top of the Democratic ticket in November. And by refusing to throw his own support behind the presumptive nominee, Sanders, in effect, is telling them that it’s OK.

The next president of the United States isn’t going to be Libertarian Gary Johnson or the Green Party’s Jill Stein. A vote for either one of them is nothing less than a vote for Trump.

GOP to investigate FBI decision on Clinton emails
So in the words of Queen Elsa, it’s time to let it go.

Sanders supporters fought a good fight. But in the end, he just couldn’t convince enough Democrats that he could ever get his pie-in-the sky agenda through our polarized Congress.

We get it that many Americans are tired of the Washington establishment and want to see real change come about in America. Sanders supporters opted for idealism, romanticism, a crusade.

The rest of us Democrats were seeking someone with experience, a proven track record and enough political stamina to trample Trump in the general election.

Trump has made attacks on Clinton’s character the centerpiece of his presidential campaign. And though Sanders supporters insist that they despise him, some of the most vile criticism of Clinton has come from them.

A friend told me the other day that while she can’t vote for Sanders in November, she would never “ruin my life’s integrity” by voting for Hillary Clinton. She detests Clinton’s “lack of character, her lies, her cold manipulations, her obvious phony demeanor.”

Specifically, she is convinced that Clinton manipulated primary votes, enticed the media to underreport Sanders’ widespread support among constituents and only cares about minorities and issues such as poverty, education and crime when it’s politically expedient.

This particular friend is both smart and politically savvy – but she has convinced herself that her single vote for a third-party candidate won’t make any difference in the November election.

The problem with that rationale is that she’s not the only person thinking that way. There could be lots of votes thrown away on candidates who can’t win, and the majority of those ballots would hurt Clinton.

Those of us who actually like Clinton and believe that she is the most qualified presidential candidate America’s had in a long time are tired of the smear tactics. But that doesn’t mean she shouldn’t have to answer tough questions.

Another friend told me that until she explains how a major Clinton foundation donor with no foreign policy experience ended up appointed to the International Security Advisory Board that he would have to “hold his nose” to vote for her.

No one understands the challenges that lie ahead better than Clinton. On a recent stop in Chicago, she acknowledged that after “25 years’ worth of wild accusations,” she’s got to earn voters’ trust. It’s time we give her a chance.

We don’t expect Trump to let up on Benghazi. Remember that he and other birthers refused to acknowledge that President Barack Obama was born in the United States, even after he presented his birth records.

But we should expect better from those who share our political values. If Democrats aren’t careful, we could end up with a family of Trumps in the White House.

While we’re engaged in our family feud over whether Hillary Clinton is a liar, the Trump team is huddling on the sidelines, waiting for a chance to steal.

  • DOE kicks off annual summer meals program to provide free breakfast and lunch to children across NYC

DOE kicks off annual summer meals program to provide free breakfast and lunch to children across NYC

NEW YORK CITY (TIP): More than 8 million free, healthy meals will be distributed from June 29 to September 2 at nearly 1,100 sites in all 5 boroughs for those 18 years old and younger

Anyone 18 years old and younger is eligible to receive a meal, and participation does not require any form of identification or application. Sites stretch across all five boroughs at various locations, including schools, parks, pools, libraries, and NYCHA facilities.

The DOE also launched a new expanded advertising campaign in collaboration with the New York State Department of Education to promote Summer Meals and ensure families across the City are aware of this incredible program. The campaign features new branding and designs in English and Spanish that will appear in ads on subways and bus shelters; in community, ethnic and online news outlets; and will also be displayed on the outside of the food trucks that will be providing meals at various locations. Volunteers from partner organizations will also go door to door and hand out flyers in 10 languages to spread awareness of the program.

“This critical program provides free meals during the summer months to ensure students are prepared to start the school year healthy and ready to learn,” said Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña. “Eating healthy meals for breakfast and lunch is essential to a child’s development, and the Summer Meals program will ensure that children can easily access these important meals during the summer.”

This year’s menu features bagels, an egg and cheese sandwich, and yogurt and granola for breakfast; as well as pizza, hamburgers, deli sandwiches and antibiotic-free roasted chicken for lunch; and will introduce new items including BBQ roasted chicken, grilled chicken pasta salad, and fruit juice ices. As part of the DOE’s larger NY Thursdays initiative, the yogurt and apples provided on Thursdays are all locally sourced. Daily menus and location details are available on the SchoolFood app.

“We encourage all children across New York city to participate in the program and take advantage of the free breakfast and lunch that’s available over the summer,” said Deputy Chancellor Elizabeth Rose. “The Summer Meals program is an easily accessible resource for families to provide nutritious meals to children.”

In 2015, 8.2 million meals were served, a significant increase from the 7.1 million meals served in the summer of 2012. The annual cost of the program is approximately $7 million. The nutritious meals meet and exceed the U.S. Department of Agriculture Nutrition Standards for School Meals.

“The Summer Meals menu offers nutritious and high-quality breakfast and lunch options to children across the City,” said Eric Goldstein, CEO of the Office of School Support Services, which oversees SchoolFood. “Having access to healthy meals is critical and the expansion of this year’s campaign will increase awareness and encourage more families to participate.”

“Thanks to this great program, families across New York City can be sure their kids get healthy meals all summer long, so they can enjoy food, friends and fun,” said Megan Cryan, New York Director, No Kid Hungry Campaign.

“Nationwide, only one in six low-income kids who received a free school lunch during the school year accessed a summer nutrition program like Summer Meals in 2014,” said Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer. “This federally-funded program is a win-win, but outreach is critical: we have to get the word out, so New York City families know when, where, and how to access free summer meals for their kids this summer.”

“The summer meals program is vital to the well-being of children who come from low-income families,” said NYC Council Education Committee Chairperson Daniel Dromm. “Far too many of our young people fall victim to food insecurity. These free, healthy meals bring us closer to eliminating hunger in our City once and for all. I am proud to support this program and will continue to work alongside the Chancellor to expand it.”

Summer Meals are available from Monday to Friday, with breakfast served from 8:00am to 9:15am and lunch served from 11:00am to 1:15pm. To learn more, find a nearby Summer Meals location, and access daily menus:

  • US adds huge 287,000 jobs in June, giving markets boost

US adds huge 287,000 jobs in June, giving markets boost

WASHINGTON (TIP): US employers added new workers at a surprisingly strong rate in June after an unnerving stall in May, delivering a fresh sign of US economic strength, the Labor Department reported Friday.

The much better-than-expected numbers gave a boost to markets in the US and Europe, battered down by worries that Britain’s vote to withdraw from the European Union will drag down economic growth.

But analysts remained cautious, saying it still waits to be seen whether the rebound from May will be sustained.

Private businesses and government authorities across the United States generated 287,000 new positions last month, 112,000 more than analysts had expected.

The strongest hiring was in the health care, hospitality, information and retail sales sectors, while government hiring also picked up.

That largely compensated for the poor numbers from May that had shocked policymakers and markets, sending the dollar lower and contributing to the Federal Reserve’s decision last month to put off an interest rate hike.

The May job creation numbers in fact were revised downward in Friday’s data from the original 38,000 reported to just 11,000.

    – US, European markets surge –

June’s hiring levels boosted the monthly average of the last three months to a solid 147,000, which economists say is adequate to keep bringing down unemployment overall.

“This is a good trend but nothing spectacular. It suggests that hiring has taken a step down since late last year but that job growth is still strong enough to absorb slack in the labor market,” said analysts at Nomura Global Economics in a client note.

“Most important, today’s report quells any concerns of a broader economic slowdown in the US.”

Markets reacted positively, with the S&P 500 on Wall Street adding 1.1 percent, the London FTSE 100 barometer rising 1.0 percent and Frankfurt’s DAX index gaining 2.0 percent.

With analysts saying the data increases the chances that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates at least once before the end of the year, the dollar jumped to $1.1029 against the euro, compared with $1.1078 before the announcement.

US bond yields, which had plunged in recent weeks with the 10-year Treasury hitting a record low, spiked higher in early trade.

The jobs report was not unequivocally good news. Wage growth, another indicator of the strength of the employment market and the economy generally, slowed, bringing the annual pace for the last three months to 2.5 percent, compared with the 12-month rate of 2.6 percent.

And the unemployment rate, which is based on a separate database from the job creation numbers, rose by 0.2 percentage points to 4.9 percent, though still near the lowest level in more than eight years. That rise was mainly due to a large jump in the number of people reported rejoining the workforce, diluting the impact of the hiring surge on the jobless rate.

In May the unemployment rate had fallen from 5.0 percent to 4.7 percent after the volatile data showed a huge number of people had dropped out of the labor force.

    – Brexit remains a worry –

Analysts remained cautious over what the hiring surge means for the economy going ahead, saying US businesses could remain cautious in the coming months, concerned about the possible economic drag from Britain’s vote to withdraw from the European Union, expected to hit economic growth in Britain and Europe.

“We believe the trend remains more than strong enough to keep the unemployment rate declining over time, consistent with additional upward pressure on wage gains,” said Jim O’Sullivan, chief US economist at High Frequency Economics.

But O’Sullivan expects the Federal Reserve will continue to keep US interest rates on hold at its end-July meeting.

  • Blair’s Iraq misadventure

    Blair’s Iraq misadventure

The invasion was ostensibly on the specious ground of Saddam Hussein possessing weapons of mass destruction, based on conjectures and intelligent reports, in the face of men in the know pleading for patience. President Bush’s decision was part hubris, part spreading the credo of democracy, part a game changer in reordering the affairs of the Middle East.

Mr. Blair was the enthusiastic young subaltern willing to do the President’s bidding, best summed up in the secret memo he sent the White House, now made public, months before the invasion saying. “I’ll be with you, whatever”. After the UK lost its empire in the post-World War II era, she ruled the world by proxy for decades as the pundit of US administrations in their negotiating the hot spots. But never has this subservient relationship been so frankly acknowledged as in Mr. Blair’s memo.

Britain, which has just made the fateful decision to leave the EU, is still searching for answers to its role in Europe and the world. In fact, the Brexit decision was born out of nostalgia for a lost empire, and in this contest between the heart and the head, the former won by a narrow margin.

Sir John’s was an inquiry into the British conduct in the Iraq invasion and war and the exhaustive report, which runs into several volumes, raps Mr. Blair’s conduct hard. But in a sense it is an even greater indictment of the conduct of President Bush who went to war on scant pickings without preparing for administering post-Saddam Iraq substituting bravado for policies on the ground.

Here lies the American tragedy on the use of unsurpassed power to remake the Middle East after a set of grandiose theories. The world knows how the crumbling Ottoman Empire was divided into spheres of influence between France and Britain 100 years ago in the shape of Sykes-Picot agreement. America entered the scene by appropriating the bulk of the rich oil flows and was happy to support monarchies and dictatorships.

The US had another interest, to protect Israel. What became known as the Israeli-American lobby and Washington’s geopolitical interests in propping up Israel meant that the usurpers of Palestinian land would never get justice. The Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement celebrated on the lawns of the White House suited Washington’s interests and was a partial one. And Israeli victories in wars with Arabs meant that what the victors won, they would keep. The two-state solution was a sop to Palestinians in the form of a toothless state now superseded by Mr. Benjamin Netanhayu’s relentless march for a Greater Israel.

To return to Iraq and Mr. Blair’s inglorious role in the invasion, the summary of the report presents a picture of his appropriating cabinet authority, declining to be bound by rigorous legal opinion and perhaps somewhat inebriated by his chummy relations with the occupant of the White House.

President Bush for his part was riding on his hobbyhorse of going down in history as the maker of a new map of the Middle East. And Paul Bremer, the man he appointed as first Governor of a defeated Iraq, totally misread the situation by excommunicating Saddam’s mainly Sunni army. In combination with the sectarian policies of Iraq’s Nouri al-Maliki, it was a priceless gift of well-trained officers and soldiers thrown into the arms of what became an insurgent force coalescing around the opposition, later to become the Islamic State.

Apart from the price Mr. Blair will have to pay for his role as Sancho Panza to Mr. Bush, the place Britain has come to occupy as America’s closest ally after the loss of empire needs re-examination. The British Parliament has learned to exercise some control over future military interventions by rejecting one of Prime Minister David Cameron’s military initiatives. But future policy makers must devise new trip wires before automatically following American military interventions. It would indeed appear that a redefinition of the responsibilities of ‘closest ally’ is called for.

Where does Britain go from here? To begin with, she has to cope with choosing a new prime minister before starting divorce proceedings with the EU, a Herculean task because she does not want to pay the full price for remaining in the single market by allowing the free movement and residency of EU nationals. Immigration was the emotive issue that won the Brexiters their double-edged victory.

Britons have been reluctant Europeans at the best of times. Now that they are in the process of reclaiming what they view as their full sovereignty, they need to carve out a new role in the new world order. The Japanese, for instance, are already worried that in their search for a role, they might indulge China in helping to rescind the embargo on high-technology arms exports.

Suggestions that Britain should revive the Commonwealth, a lame horse, are tantamount to barking up the wrong tree. The post-colonial experiment of leading ex-colonies in a totally different age is a non-starter. Those from the colonies who chose to settle in the UK -for instance, the large Indian diaspora -have their links with their original homes but these cannot be translated into a new grouping of political weight in the world. If the Modi government is thinking of playing a leading role in a revived Commonwealth, it would be set on a foolish venture.

The Chilcot report is a crunch moment for Britain because it illuminates the dilemmas of a once Great Britain that ruled the waves and countries far and wide. Having been reminded of the pitfalls of slavishly following the sole superpower, she has to begin to find a new direction.

  • India Should Harness Research: NJ Author

India Should Harness Research: NJ Author

NEW YORK: The number of Indians and persons of Indian origin who have enriched many nations, and humanity as a whole, through applied research and innovation in a multitude of fields has increased dramatically, says V. Ramaswami, the New Jersey based Indian American author of the to be released book “Innovation by India for India: the need & the challenge.”

This should be re-assuring for India particularly because a significant fraction of these have had their initial graduate education and training in India. There can be no doubt that the capacity of the Indian mind and the will of the Indian can match any other. India’s indigenous scientific advances in the nuclear, space, and super-computer technologies are remarkable and attest further to the scientific and engineering talent in the country, he says.

India’s scientific and technical establishments have many feats to boast about, including the recent successful launch of an orbiter to Mars at a per kilometer cost “less than that of a one kilometer auto-rickshaw ride in Ahmedabad.” Despite all of its above accomplishments, India is yet to harness commercially its research and innovation capabilities. Despite being a significant contributor to the information sector, not a single Indian enterprise has come close to any of the new age technology giants.

What are those impediments that hold back the Indian in India in the sphere of applied research and its commercialization? Why it is that new product generation is low even at the low end where little technology is needed? Can those issues be redressed and if so how? These concerns form the main focus of this book. Some key factors are identified and examined in detail in the Indian context to find some possible actions for improvement in the book.

The book deals with the creation of an ecology for commercializable innovations by Indians in India and owned by India. The timing for the book is perfect. There is so much interest in the Modi government to generate many start-ups but unfortunately, it has not worked out well from the response to the call for applications for funding, the author says.

The most poignant example is the fact that our soldiers in Kargil were struggling with hand cranked telephones while Pakistanis had Motorola satellite phones for which Indian engineers wrote the software. Whoever got rich by working for others?  “Make in India” is much needed but if we stop there, we will become a nation of coolies and laborers for others and not realize our “tryst with destiny” much talked about, he says.

He was motivated to write the book by former Indian President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam whom he had met in Anna University in Chennai where he had gone to deliver the Ramanujan lecture series.”In a 45 minute one on one session, I did give him a lot of my views and he felt I should put them down in writing.  He said he is betting entirely on India’s young.”  The book comes recommended by Dr. Anurag Kumar, Director of the Indian Institute of Science and Padmabhushan Dr. Rajaraman of IISc’s supercomputer center.”

The author, Dr. Vaidyanathan Ramaswami, a former Chief Scientist at Bell Communications Research, has an innovative track record of research in applied probability and telecommunications with work impacting many real world systems and international standards.  He is the author of over seventy five research papers and a noted monograph, and holds many patents related to communications.  His career has also covered academia as a faculty member and is embellished further by his involvement with several start ups in the areas of strategy and research.  He has a deep interest in India and has written many articles and blogs on Carnatic music, Hindu philosophy, and Indian economy and politics.

The book is to be released in Chennai on July 22 at the Alumni Association meeting of the Madras Institute of Technology which is the alma mater of Dr. Abdul Kalam.

  • MAYOR’S OFFICE OF IMMIGRANT AFFAIRS STEPS FORWARD TO GUIDE IMMIGRANTS ON THEIR RIGHTS AND KEY CITY SERVICES

MAYOR’S OFFICE OF IMMIGRANT AFFAIRS STEPS FORWARD TO GUIDE IMMIGRANTS ON THEIR RIGHTS AND KEY CITY SERVICES

NEW YORK CITY (TIP): On July 7, 2016, Commissioner Nisha Agarwal of the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) held a press briefing at CUNY’s Center for Community and Ethnic Media to inform immigrant New Yorkers of their rights and of Mayor Bill de Blasio and MOIA’s commitment to connecting all immigrant New Yorkers to key city services as well as programs like IDNYC, ActionNYC, and ActionHealthNYC, which address needs that are specific to immigrant communities.

First, Commissioner Nisha Agarwal expressed Mayor Bill de Blasio and MOIA’s deep disappointment with the Supreme Court decision. On June 23, the Supreme Court issued a tie decision about the President’s executive actions on immigration. As a result of the tie, immigrants cannot apply for Expanded DACA and DAPA programs. Commissioner Agarwal stressed that now is the time for immigrants to get connected to their communities as well as important services that are offered by NYC city government. This includes immigrants who may be eligible for the original DACA program, which is not affected by the Supreme Court decision. DACA provides certain undocumented immigrants with temporary protection from deportation, work authorization, a driver’s license and other benefits. If immigrant New Yorkers are not sure if they qualify for DACA, they should call 311 or go to nyc.gov/deferredaction for more information. Commissioner Nisha Agarwal encouraged all immigrants in New York City to seek the services that they are eligible for, no matter their status, including IDNYC, ActionNYC, and ActionHealthNYC programs as well as health care services, education and afterschool programs, and emergency food assistance and shelter.

Steven Ettannani, Senior Advisor, State and Federal Policy at the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) spoke on behalf of DCA Commissioner Lorelei Salas. He discussed DCA’s role in preventing immigration services provider (ISP) fraud. ISPs are people or businesses without legal training who charge fees for immigration services. They cannot advise people on how to resolve an immigration issue in any way and cannot help customers prepare for immigration interviews. The Department of Consumer Affairs recommends only using ISPs for help with obtaining supporting documents, arranging photos or medical tests, notarization (if licensed), and free referrals to legal providers.

All immigrants in NYC have access to health care services, education and after school programs, emergency food assistance and shelter, and IDNYC, among other services and resources. The City will continue to work to connect immigrants, regardless of status, to the resources they need for their families and communities to thrive.

The City will also continue to advocate for urgently needed federal immigration reform.

  • INDIAN MUSLIM GROUPS SAY #ISIS IS ‘UN-ISLAMIC’; TOOL OF #ISLAM’S ENEMIES

INDIAN MUSLIM GROUPS SAY #ISIS IS ‘UN-ISLAMIC’; TOOL OF #ISLAM’S ENEMIES

HYDERABAD (TIP): Terming IS as a tool in the hands of anti-Islam forces, Muslim organizations representing all schools of Islamic thought, July 8, condemned the terror attack in the holy city of Madinah, resenting it as an attack on Islam and all Muslims of the world.

Addressing a massive public meeting organized by Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, leaders and religious scholars said the attack by the so-called Islamic State near the Prophet’s mosque was the handiwork of enemies of Islam.

A resolution passed unanimously at the meet strongly condemned attacks in Saudi Arabia and other parts of the world, during the holy month of Ramadan.

“The ISIS has nothing to do with Islam and its principles and tenets, and, in fact, all its activities and terror attacks are meant to strike at the very roots of Islam. The ISIS is not only un-Islamic but acts as a tool in the hands of Western forces who are enemies of Islam. In the garb of Muslims, they are defaming Islam,” said the resolution.

“This band of ‘neo-Kharijis’ had the audacity to proclaim itself to be a so-called world-wide caliphate and appointing a self-styled caliph in 2014. These armed thugs have been letting loose a reign of terror in some parts of Iraq and Syria and spreading their subversive activities to other countries in the Gulf and North Africa, as well as to other Muslim nations and European, Asian and African countries,” it added.

It said during Ramadan, ISIS killed innocent Muslims and non-Muslims in terror attacks in Baghdad, Istanbul and Dhaka, killing 300 persons and injuring scores of others. “They sought to disturb the peace and tranquility of one of Islam’s holiest sites -the Prophet’s mosque at Madinah. The suicide bomber was stopped in his tracks outside the mosque complex and four Saudi security men were martyred and five were injured.”

“The perpetrators of this violence at the holy city have incurred the wrath of Almighty Allah and the world will soon witness the destruction of these unholy men who are making attempts to harm Islam and demonize the Muslims,” the resolution said.

It noted that through its sustained but distorted propaganda on the social media, the IS has been making attempts to spread its nefarious designs and tentacles to various Muslim and non-Muslim countries, by seeking to recruit youth and enlist the support of fringe terror groups operating in those countries.

“This massive gathering of Indian Muslims appeals to their co-religionists, especially the youth, to be wary of the propaganda and activities of the ISIS, and do their utmost to foil the nefarious attempts of this anti-Islamic group to disturb peace and tranquility and create ill-will and hatred against the Muslims among their compatriots in this great country,” it added.

Prominent among those who addressed the meeting were MIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, Mufti Khaleel Ahmed of Jamia-e-Nizamia, Syed Mohammed Qubool Pasha of Majlis-e-Ulema-e-Deccan, Hafiz Peer Shabbir Ahmed of Jamiat-ul-Ulema, Maulana Khaled Saifullah Rahmani, secretary, All India Muslim Personal Law Board; Hamed Mohammed Khan of Jamaat-e-Islami, Raheemuddin Ansari of A United Muslim Forum, Safi Ahmed Madani of Jamiat-ul-Ahle-Hadees, Shia cleric Moulana Syed Nisar Hussain Hyder Aga, and Shaikh Mansoor Bhai of the Dawoodi Bohra community.

SRINAGAR (TIP): Protests erupted across Kashmir on July 8 after Burhan Wani, the 22-year-old Hizbul Mujahideen commander who was tagged as the poster boy on social media of militancy in the Valley, was shot dead along with two other militants by security forces and police in Bumdoora village, 85 km south of Srinagar.

By Friday night, protesters had gathered along the Srinagar-Anantnag highway, burning tyres and stopping vehicles, and funeral prayers were offered for the slain militants in several areas. Announcements were also made on public address systems with youths raising slogans in support of Wani.

Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Geelani and JKLF chairman Yasin Malik called for a strike to protest the killing. Geelani also asked people to participate in Wani’s funeral “in large numbers”.

The PDP-BJP state government imposed a curfew in South Kashmir and cut access to Internet services in many areas.

Officials said Burhan was shot dead during a joint operation launched at around 4.30 pm by the Special Operation Group of J&K police and 19 Rashtriya Rifles in the Kokernag area of South Kashmir.

“Three militants, including Burhan Wani, were hiding in the house of one Farooq Ahmad. As the troops started search operations in the area, the militants opened fire. In the encounter that followed, Wani and his two associates were killed. The operation is still underway,” a senior police officer said.

Sources said the operation was based on a specific input gathered even as police were tracking Wani’s movement over the last few days. They identified one of the other militants killed as Sartaj Ahmad. One policeman was injured in the operation, they said.

“It is a big success for security forces and a setback to militancy,” said Inspector General of Police Javid Mujtaba Gilani. An army spokesman confirmed that Wani and two other militants were killed in a joint operation.

Omar Abdullah, former J&K chief minister and National Congress leader, said in a series of tweets: “If this is confirmed its big news & will also mean some tense days in parts of the valley…Alas Burhan is not the first to pick the gun and won’t be the last. JKNC has always maintained that a political problem needs political solution.’’

The son of a school headmaster, Wani was the most high-profile militant operating in the Valley, and had recently warned policemen of attacks and threatened to target the proposed Sainik colonies for security personnel in the state.

Last year, the army had gunned down his elder brother, Khalid Muzuffar, in the forests of Tral where he had gone to meet Wani who had left home in 2010.

Wani made the headlines in 2014 for the photographs he had posted on social media of himself and other militants wearing army fatigues and carrying Kalashnikovs. Officials said he led a group of 11 to 15 local militants based in the forests of South Kashmir and carried a reward of Rs 10 lakh on his head.

Wani had received a setback just two months ago when one of his close associates, Tariq Pandit, surrendered in Pulwama. Pandit was among those who figured in a photograph of the group that went viral on social media. After the surrender, he is believed to have given police vital information on Wani’s tactics and hideouts leading to several arrests.

In June, Wani had admitted in a video statement that Pandit was in custody and that many of his associates had been picked by police. Over the last 30 days, he had released two videos of him in army fatigues — in one, he had warned of attacks on Sanik colonies and in another he was seen playing cricket with other militants at an undisclosed location.

  • PM Modi’s new cabinet has strong RSS imprint

PM Modi’s new cabinet has strong RSS imprint

The RSS’s imprint got deeper on the Narendra Modi government with as many as six parliamentarians with strong links to the BJP’s ideological mentor finding place in theexpanded union council of ministers .

While veteran RSS pracharak Anil Madhav Dave got Independent charge of the environment ministry, five others out of the 19 new ministers have roots in the right-wing organisation.

The RSS – which played a crucial role in the BJP’s victory in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls — was pleased with the choice of new ministers but maintained it was “the prerogative of the government.”

“They have several compulsions, could be elections or other political decisions, which have to be borne in mind while accommodating people. It is not for us to comment. Yes, Dave was a pracharak. He has worked very closely with the Sangh,” a senior RSS functionary said.

He, however, added that Dave has been a BJP member for a long time and a Rajya Sabha member as well. “It will not be right to call him a Sangh karyakarta anymore.”

When the Modi government took oath in May 2014, the RSS influence was evident from the induction of at least nine Cabinet ministers and at least three ministers of state who were RSS pracharaks, those who are given the task of spreading the organisation’s ideology.

There were at least a dozen others who were not full-time RSS pracharaks but were associated with the Sangh through its students’ wing, the ABVP.

On the last count, more than third of the 66 members in the council of ministers –before the expansion — had an RSS background. The proportion continued in the latest expansion as well.

With the Prime Minister himself being an RSS pracharak, his ministers have never shied away from projecting their association with the organisation.

Among the newly inducted ministers with RSS background is Mahendra Nath Pandey, the new minister of state for human resource development who was an active participant in the movement for constructing a Ram temple in Ayodhya.

Inducted as the new minister of state for textiles from Uttarakhand, Ajay Tamta, also has a RSS background and participated in the Ram Janmabhoomi temple agitation before plunging into electoral politics.

Rajen Gohain, the new minister of state for railways, was one of the founders of the BJP in Assam.

A die-hard Sangh activist, he was a known RSS face at the organisation’s training centre in Hojai of Nagaon district. At RSS rallies, he was regularly spotted in the outfit’s trademark khaki shorts.

Faggan Singh Kulaste, another newly inducted junior minister from Madhya Pradesh, was also an RSS activist.

BJP ally Shiv Sena, however, was critical of Modi’s choice.

“In Nehru and Indira Gandhi’s cabinets, there used to be stellar ministers with people like Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar to Babu Jagjivan Ram and Yashwantrao Chavan. A portfolio like human resources development (HRD) gained prominence only because of PV Narasimha Rao; similarly, the world learnt of India’s finance ministry only after Manmohan Singh helmed it,” the Sena said in its mouthpiece Saamna on Wednesday.

“But now, such leaders of such caliber are not to be found. Hence, Modi has to shoulder the burden of his responsibility all by himself.”

There were signs of discontent within the BJP, too.

“I do not know why I was dropped. I never had any issues or problem with Modi or party president Amit Shah,” Mansukhbhai Vasava, who was dropped as minister of state for tribal affairs, said.

  • NOW, A SUPPLEMENT THAT KILLS YOUR JUNK FOOD CRAVINGS

NOW, A SUPPLEMENT THAT KILLS YOUR JUNK FOOD CRAVINGS

D0 you find it tough to stay away from sugary treats such as cakes and pastries and junk food? There could be some good news for you. Scientists may have found a way to simply switch off those corrupting cravings.

Eating a type of powdered food supplement, based on a molecule produced by bacteria in the gut, reduces cravings for high-calorie foods such as chocolate and pizza, a new study suggested.

Scientists from Imperial College London and the University of Glasgow asked 20 volunteers to consume a milkshake that either contained an ingredient called inulin-propionate ester, or a type of fibre called inulin.

After drinking the milkshakes, the participants in the current study underwent an MRI scan, where they were shown pictures of various low or high calorie foods such as salad, fish and vegetables or chocolate, cake and pizza.

The team found that when volunteers drank the milkshake containing inulin-propionate ester, they had less activity in areas of their brain linked to reward — but only when looking at the high calorie foods. These areas, called the caudate and the nucleus accumbens, found in the centre of the brain, have previously been linked to food cravings and the motivation to want a food.

The volunteers also had to rate how appealing they found the foods. The results showed when they drank the milkshake with the inulin-propionate ester supplement they rated the high calorie foods as less appealing.

In a second part of the study, the volunteers were given a bowl of pasta with tomato sauce, and asked to eat as much as they like. When participants drank the inulin-propionate ester, they ate 10 per cent less pasta than when they drank the milkshake that contained inulin alone.

Senior author Gary Frost said, “This study shows that this supplement can decrease activity in brain areas associated with food reward at the same time as reducing the amount of food they eat.”

He added that eating enough fibre to naturally produce similar amounts of propionate would be difficult.

Co-senior author Tony Goldstone noted, “These show that altering how the gut works can change not only appetite in general, but also change how the brain responds when they see high-calorie foods, and how appealing they find the foods to be.”

  • EATING HOME-COOKED MEALS MAY HELP KEEP DIABETES AWAY: STUDY

EATING HOME-COOKED MEALS MAY HELP KEEP DIABETES AWAY: STUDY

People who often eat food prepared at home are less likely to suffer from type 2 diabetes than those who consume such meals less frequently, new research has claimed. There is an increasing tendency for people to eat out, involving more consumption of fast food, researchers said. The study has found that such people have a diet rich in energy but relatively poor in nutrients -this could lead to weight gain which is, in turn, associated with type 2 diabetes risk, said Qi Sun, from the Harvard T H Chan School of Public Heath in the US.

Sun and his team employed large prospective datasets in which US health professionals were surveyed, with rigorous collection of data on health indicators, including eating habits and occurrence of diabetes. The results were corrected for factors that could affect dining habits, including marital status. The study analysed 2.1 million years of follow-up data.

The findings show people who reported consuming 5-7 evening meals prepared at home during a week had 15% lower risk of diabetes than those who consumed two such meals or fewer. A smaller, but statistically significant, reduction was apparent for those who consumed more midday meals at home.

Moreover, less weight gain could partially explain the reported reduction in occurrence of type 2 diabetes in those often eating meals prepared at home. Well-established diabetes prevention strategies include behavioural interventions aimed at increasing exercise and dietary habits.
