Although tensions between the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan and Pakistan have eased in recent weeks, discussions and disputes over relations between the two countries continue.
As part of these discussions, Pakistan’s defense minister, in recent remarks, expressed regret over Islamabad’s interference in Afghanistan’s internal affairs over many years and said that Pakistan had become a proxy and conduit in the wars of major powers.
He stressed coexistence between the two countries and said conflicts could be resolved through understanding and dialogue.
Khawaja Asif, Pakistan’s defense minister, said: “In my view, our investment was a mistake. We should not have interfered in Afghanistan’s internal affairs because it was not related to us. We became a proxy or conduit in the wars of major powers, and we paid the price for it.”
Meanwhile, the acting ambassador of the Islamic Emirate in Qatar, during a meeting with the United Kingdom’s special envoy for Afghanistan, discussed improving relations between Kabul and Islamabad.
Richard Lindsay described the meeting as valuable and added that he had a useful discussion with Suhail Shaheen regarding the importance of strengthening Afghanistan-Pakistan relations.
