An extraordinary literary journey that began in Dallas in 2003 is transforming the traditional Urdu poetry gathering into a celebration of peace, unity, and cultural harmony on October 24 in Dallas, Texas
A Mushaira, the traditional gathering of Urdu poets, is an enduring symbol of the Urdu literary and cultural heritage. But should a Mushaira be confined merely to the recitation of poetry, applause, and expressions of appreciation? Since its inception in Dallas, Texas, in 2003, Al-Noor International has sought to answer this question in a distinctive way. It has championed a vision that extends beyond the conventional literary gathering, transforming the Mushaira into a platform for promoting peace, love, brotherhood, and harmony among people of diverse faiths and cultures.
“An Evening for Peace and Unity” embodies this very philosophy. Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, and Christians come together under one roof, share moments of joy, and participate in a celebration of literature and culture as members of one extended family. In such an atmosphere, the Mushaira becomes not only a means of preserving and promoting the Urdu language, but also a powerful instrument for strengthening human relationships and fostering mutual respect”, said Dr. Noor Amrohvi in a conversation with The Indian Panorama chief editor, Prof. Indrajit S Saluja, who happens to be the special guest at the October 24 Mushaira dedicated to “peace, unity, and cultural harmony”
For Dr. Noor Amrohvi, the founder and chairman of Al-Noor International, a renowned poet, businessman, and community leader, the quality of an event should be evident from the very moment a guest walks through the door. His vision is to create an atmosphere whose elegance, warmth, and thoughtful arrangements leave a lasting impression. Rather than compromise on standards he believes in continually introducing fresh ideas and raising the bar with every gathering.
At different events guests and poets have been welcomed in luxury limousines; the arrival of a distinguished poet has sometimes been made memorable with a traditional horse-drawn carriage; and on other occasions, guests have been greeted with showers of flowers. A giant LED screen on stage, portraits of participating poets, literary quotations, carefully planned presentations, and meticulous attention to detail—from dining arrangements to the very crockery used for serving tea—all reflect the distinctive approach of Al-Noor International. Such gatherings demonstrate that the elegance of an event lies not only in its grand gestures, but also in the thoughtful details that often go unnoticed.
Innovation and a willingness to explore new formats have become integral to the organization’s identity. Al-Noor International has held Mushairas in open fields and public parks, hosted a literary gathering on the top floor of Dallas’s iconic Reunion Tower, with its spectacular panoramic views of the city, and organized its annual Cruise Mushaira aboard a luxurious double-decker vessel. Another distinctive tradition has been the commissioning of oil-painted portraits of poets visiting from abroad as a gesture of admiration and tribute to their literary contributions.
In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization held a free-entry public Mushaira under the title “Jashn-e-Sehat-o-Salaamati”a celebration of health and well-being. The distribution of Polo-brand wrist watches among attendees was another noteworthy initiative. While gifts at many literary events are generally reserved for poets and special guests, this gesture reflected an effort to include the audience itself in the joy and spirit of the occasion.
An equally important objective of this journey has been to keep the younger generation growing up in America connected with its Eastern cultural heritage, the Urdu language, and its rich literary traditions. Al-Noor International seeks to ensure that children and young people do not regard their parents’ language merely as a relic of the past. Instead, it encourages them to develop a genuine interest in Urdu, enjoy the experience of Mushairas, and take pride in their cultural identity. To achieve this, traditional literary values are presented through modern event management, innovative arrangements, and an engaging atmosphere that appeals to audiences across generations.
Those familiar with Dr. Noor Amrohvi’s approach often observe that he places the work and its purpose above the promotion of his own name. He believes that an individual should be recognized through his contributions rather than through self-projection. Although many of the organization’s innovative concepts originate from his vision, he has traditionally preferred not to have his name prominently displayed on flyers or banners, nor to occupy a place on the stage. His philosophy rests on the belief that the success of a literary event is the result not of one individual’s efforts alone, but of the collective dedication of an entire team.
In this regard, the contribution of Dr. Shamsa Qureshi, a celebrated poetess whom Dr. Noor Amrohvi regards as his sister, deserves special mention. The efforts of Shazia Khan, Rehan Qaiser, Shah Alam Asar, Haider Sheikh, Pramod Rajput, Sujata Rajput, Irfan Ali, Muhammad Ali Siddiqui, and numerous other volunteers have also played an important role. Their collective commitment helps coordinate the many departments and arrangements required to bring a large-scale literary event to fruition.
Over the years, the Mushairas organized by Al-Noor International have featured distinguished literary personalities, including Munawwar Rana, Santosh Anand, Surendra Sharma, Ashok Chakradhar, and Imran Pratapgarhi. According to the organization, its programs have also received recognition and appreciation from literary and social figures in India and Pakistan, as well as from certain senior officials in the United States.
Good Wishes Messages have poured in from dignitaries from across the world, which include Sheila Dixit (Delhi Chief Minister);Prithviraj Chavan (Maharashtra Chief Minister); Dr. Rajan Welukar , Vice Chancellor, University of Mumbai); Sirajuddin Qureshi, President, India Islamic Cultural Center; Satish Gupta, CEO, SBI International, Inc. Dallas; Prof. Mohammad Miyan, Vice Chancelloe, Maulana Azad National Urdu University ; I.K. Gujral, Former Prime Minister of India; Prof. (Dr.) P.K. Abdul Aziz, Vice Chancellor, Aligarh Muslim University; A.R. Kidwai, Governor of Haryana; Baba Siddiqui, Minister, Maharashtra; Abu Asim Azmi, Member Rajya Sabha, India; Dr. Ausaf Sayeed, Consul General of India in Jeddah; S.M. Gavai, Consul General of India, Houston; Marc Veasey, Member of US Congress, Texas Congressional District 33; Kapil Sibal, Minister, Government of India; Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister, Delhi; Satyender Jain, Minister, Government of Delhi, Mohammad Adeeb, Member Rajya Sabha, India, among others.
The organization’s annual Mushaira in the Dallas area, scheduled for October 24th, 2026, is also expected to feature a special appearance by Annu Kapoor, a well-known personality in the Hindi film industry. The announcement has generated additional interest in the forthcoming event, with audiences keen to discover what new and memorable experience Al-Noor International will bring to the stage this time.
Ultimately, the success of a Mushaira cannot be measured solely by the brilliance of its stage, the celebrity status of its guests, or the grandeur of its arrangements. Its true significance lies in the message it conveys to society. When poetry brings people of different faiths closer together, connects younger generations with their heritage, and nurtures feelings of love, dignity, and mutual respect, its influence extends far beyond literature and becomes a meaningful form of social service.
This, at its heart, is the guiding philosophy of Al-Noor International a Mushaira should be more than a gathering of words and verses. It should become a bridge between hearts, a meeting point for cultures, and a living expression of peace, harmony, and human solidarity.
For the true beauty of poetry lies not merely in the applause it receives, but in its ability to bring one human being closer to another. That is the enduring message behind “An Evening for Peace and Unity”, a concept that transcends the boundaries of a literary event to become a meaningful social vision, celebrating our shared humanity through the universal language of poetry.
