Indian Origin Assailants of Akali Dal Leader Manjit Singh GK Arrested

    Parminder S Aujla

SACRAMENTO(TIP): The Sutter County police arrested Jasbir Singh and his son, Gagandeep Singh on September 12, in connection with assault on Akali Dal leader Manjit Singh GK in a Yuba City Sikh Temple on August 25.

Manjit Singh GK was attacked amid chants of ‘Khalistan Zindabad’ by pro-Khalistan supporters in Yuba City in Northern California on August 25 where he had gone to pay obeisance to the Sikh Guru Granth Sahib.

Releasing a statement immediately after the incident, Manjit Singh GK said,” I had come to Yuba city Gurudwara with other devotees. We had come here to pay our obeisance. Around 20-25 men entered the Gurudwara premises and attacked me. Considering the situation and respecting the sanctity of the Gurudwara I told my supporter to not react to such elements. Despite the brutality with which they have attacked me, I am absolutely fine”.

Earlier in August, Manjit Singh GK was attacked by a group of Khalistan supporters. The first incident took place in New York where he and his family members were attacked. Minutes after the incident, Manjit Singh posted the video of the incident which took place when he had come out of a TV studio after participating in a debate.

“A group of people attacked me and my relatives in New York. This will not scare me away from my path to serve the community. I have fought, and I will fight till my last breath. Such cowardly incidents do not scare me,” Manjit Singh tweeted.

Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal has alleged that the men who were behind the attacks have links with Pakistan’s intelligence agency, ISI. She also added that these attackers enjoy the support of senior Congress leader and the accused in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, Jagdish Tytler.

“Heads of ‘Sikhs for Justice’ who are direct beneficiaries of ISI, and who work on their orders and are supported by those who are in direct touch with the likes of Jagdish Tytler, and Jasbir Singh and his son Gagandeep Singh, were seen attacking him (Manjit Singh GK). Jasbir Singh is the same person who has spent three months in jail for trying to intimidate an eyewitness against Jagdish Tytler in the 1984 massacre”, she said.

  • Indian-Origin Finance Consultant among 3 Killed in US Bank Shooting

Indian-Origin Finance Consultant among 3 Killed in US Bank Shooting

NEW YORK(TIP): An Indian- origin Finance consultant was among three people killed when a gunman opened fire in a bank building in the US city of Cincinnati. He was only 25 years old.

Pruthviraj Kandepi, who belonged to Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district, was killed when 29-year-old Omar Enrique Santa Perez from the town of North Bend, Ohio, opened fire at the headquarters for the Fifth Third Bank near Fountain Square in downtown Cincinnati, police said.

India’s Consul General in New York Ambassador Sandeep Chakravorty told the media that the consulate is in touch with the police, Mr Kandepi’s family as well as members of the community.

An official of the Telugu Association of North America (TANA) said that Mr Kandepi was working with the bank as a consultant. Arrangements were being made to send his body to India, he added.

The two other victims of the Cincinnati bank shooting were identified as 48-year-old Luis Felipe Calderon and 64-year-old Richard Newcomer.

Five people were shot, some multiple times, in the incident, they said, adding that the gunman was killed in a shootout with the police.

According to Cincinnati Police Chief Eliot Isaac, officers responded to a 911 call at around 9:10 am local time about an “active shooter” at the bank.

The gunman was shot multiple times as four police officers approached him, and he died at the scene.

He had a pistol and more than 200 rounds of ammunition, Mr Isaac said, adding that the gunman was not a former or current employee of the bank. He had gone to several businesses before going to the bank, he said.

Perez had opened fire in the building’s loading dock before continuing into the lobby area and firing more shots, Mr Isaac told reporters at a televised press conference.

  • Indian-Origin Man Killed by Underage for Refusing to Sell Cigarette Paper to Him

Indian-Origin Man Killed by Underage for Refusing to Sell Cigarette Paper to Him

LONDON (TIP): An Indian-origin shopkeeper, who refused to sell cigarette paper to a 16-year old, was murdered by the underage. The teen has been sentenced to four years of imprisonment.

The shopkeeper, Vijaykumar Patel sustained a fatal head injury in the unprovoked attack by the boy, whose name has not been revealed for legal reasons, outside a mini-market in Mill Hill, north London, in January. The 49-year-old had refused to sell the tobacco related item to the boy and his two friends who came into his shop on January 6 because they were under 18 years of age.

Sentencing the teenager at a hearing on Sep 7, Justice Stuart-Smith described the boy as a “time bomb”, who had been out of on bail at the time of the attack.

“The record, the facts of this case, the contents of the PSR (pre-sentence report) with the analysis of very high risk of causing significant harm. I do not find the PSR surprising at all,” the judge noted.

He sentenced the boy to four years’ detention and a further three years on license, or under monitoring.

A trial at the Old Bailey court in London was told the boy, who had five alcoholic drinks at a party on the evening of the attack, became aggressive and shouted abuse before hurling himself at Patel outside the shop. The attack was captured on CCTV and it was possible to see the moment Mr Patel was hit.

Mr Patel was rushed to St Mary’s Hospital in central London but died the following day from the injury to the back of his head.  The teenager had claimed self-defense but was found guilty of manslaughter at the end of the trial in July.

“The CCTV shows he was simply standing with his hands in his pockets doing nothing,” the judge told the boy during the sentencing hearing this week.

“What happened next was that you deliberately moved to the left and launched yourself at Mr Patel, taking him off his feet and to the ground. He was completely defenseless and did not move. You struck him,” he said.

The court was informed that the Patel family was in India and therefore no victim impact statement was presented.

Another shop worker had chased the boys away with a billboard sign and a broom following the incident. The boys were then seen laughing and joking as they fled the scene.

The court was told the boy suffered from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and low intelligence and had previous convictions for weapons offences and kicking and punching a teacher at his school.

His lawyer Philippa McAtasney said the boy was “not beyond hope and help” and had been seriously affected by the stabbing of a youth worker friend who had confronted a drug dealer. The teenager himself had written a letter to trial judge expressing his remorse over the killing of Mr Patel.

  • Indian-Origin Man in UK to be Deported to India to Finish Jail Term for Wife’s Murder

Indian-Origin Man in UK to be Deported to India to Finish Jail Term for Wife’s Murder

LONDON(TIP): An Indian-origin man serving a jail term in a UK jail for killing his wife over eight years ago is to be deported to India to serve the remainder of his murder sentence in Punjab.

Harpreet Aulakh was sentenced to a minimum of 28 years in London in December 2010 for plotting the murder of his wife, Geeta Aulakh, after she asked for a divorce. The 40-year-old will be deported under the India-UK Repatriation of Prisoners Act, the BBC reported today.

“All arrangements are in place. According to the plan, the UK authorities will bring him to Delhi from where a team of Punjab police officers will bring him to Amritsar,” IPS Sahota, a top prison official in Punjab, was quoted as saying.

Inspector general of prisons Roop Kumar said Harpreet Aulakh, who is from Punjab, had told UK authorities that he wanted to serve his remaining term in India.

Geeta Aulakh, 28, was brutally attacked with a machete during the attack in Greenford, west London, in November 2009. She worked for local Indian community radio station, Sunrise Radio, and her murder had hit headlines around the world at the time of the attack.

In November 2009, the victim, who was the mother of Harpreet Aulakh’s two sons, was hacked to death with a sword, which her husband of 10 years had chosen from a selection of swords at a store days before the murder.

The attack took place when Geeta Aulakh went to pick up her sons after leaving work at the radio station where she worked as a receptionist.

She was found with head injuries and her right hand severed, and died a few hours later in hospital.

Harpreet Aulakh, also known as Sunny, and two others, Sher Singh, 19, and Jaswant Dhillon, 30, were also found guilty of Geeta Aulakh’s murder in 2010. Sher Singh, who actually wielded the sword, and Jaswant Dhillon, who acted as the lookout for the group, were sentenced to 22 years behind bars. During the trial, the court was told that British-born Indian-origin Geeta Aulakh wanted to divorce her husband over his involvement in violent crimes, leading him to plot her murder.

  • Gauri Lankesh killers had a long hit-list?

Gauri Lankesh killers had a long hit-list?

Most of 16 pistols recovered in Maharashtra were acquired recently: police

    K.V. Aditya Bharadwaj

BENGALURU(TIP): Most of the 16 country-made pistols recovered from the three right-wing activists arrested in Maharashtra were procured recently, most likely after the arrest of K.T. Naveen Kumar — one of the accused in the Gauri Lankesh case — in February 2018. Sources said this is a cause for concern as it indicates that the people involved were plotting to kill more people on their hit list, many in a short span of time.

These are suspected to include the two pistols used in the murders of Narendra Dabholkar, Govind Pansare, M.M. Kalburgi and Gauri Lankesh. They are being tested for possible matches with cartridges found at the crime scene.

During the course of their investigation into the murder of Gauri Lankesh, the SIT in May 2018 had recovered a hit list of 34 intellectuals from Amol Kale’s diary, eight of who were from Karnataka. The probe revealed an ambitious plan to set in motion multiple murder plots simultaneously in Karnataka.

The probe revealed a plot to kill Mysuru-based rationalist Prof. K.S. Bhagavan, which investigators said was at an advanced stage of implementation. K.T. Naveen Kumar, 37, of Hindu Yuva Sena, a fringe group, was arrested by Bengaluru police in February 2018 when he was trying to procure a country-made pistol for the murder. This indicated that the gang had no weapon other than the one used to kill Gauri Lankesh. FSL reports have linked the weapon to the murder of M.M. Kalburgi.

The pistol, which was used to kill Narendra Dabholkar and was also one of the weapons used in the murder of Govind Pansare, is not working, the probe had indicated.

Amol Kale reportedly told interrogators that they were trying to create ‘multiple self-contained teams’ to execute multiple plots. His diary had entries pointing to several plots targeting rationalists in Karnataka.

“At that time, we doubted their ability to carry out multiple assassinations. But now, the 16 pistols indicate that they seemed to have been moving towards that goal,” said a senior officer, who said it is alarming as it indicates that remnants of the gang continue to be active and furthering the conspiracy even after the arrest of most of their key players.

Sources said Srikanth Pangarakar, a former Shiv Sena councillor from Jalna who was arrested by the Maharashtra ATS, was a close associate of Amol Kale, the alleged kingpin in the Gauri Lankesh case. The investigation indicates that they were in constant touch for the past one year and Pangarkar had visited well-known country-made pistol hubs in central India.

  • A look at Paul Manafort trial until August 9: Key takeaways

A look at Paul Manafort trial until August 9: Key takeaways

ALEXANDRIA, Va.(TIP):  Over the course of eight days, Paul Manafort’s criminal-fraud trial has featured testimony about extravagant wardrobes, secret offshore bank accounts, fake loan applications and doctored bank accounts, an ostrich jacket and a fall from wealth, a USA Today report says.

The newspaper has listed certain takeaways from the trial until now.

The trial has attracted packed galleries to the federal courthouse each day, with U.S. District Court Judge T.S. Ellis III setting a pretty brisk pace for the proceedings, the first case to come to trial as part of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

The prosecution is expected to rest its case against President Donald Trump’s former campaign manager as soon as Friday, the ninth day of the trial. As Manafort’s defense team gets ready to take over, here are some key takeaways:

Prosecutors have offered substantial evidence from documents and witnesses saying Manafort and his business partner Rick Gates – who is testifying under a grant of immunity – established a web of secret offshore accounts, based mostly in Cyprus. Prosecutors allege they stashed and moved millions of dollars in unreported income to the U.S. to support Manafort’s extravagant lifestyle.

An IRS revenue agent testified that, between 2010 and 2014, Manafort moved $16.4 million in untaxed income into the U.S. to pay bills for high-end clothing, cars and real estate.

As Manafort’s lucrative consulting business in Ukraine began to dry up, his pursuit of bank loans took off. The government showed how Gates – at Manafort’s direction – dummied documents to support the loan applications. Prosecutors said the applications were full of fraudulent claims, including classifying a rental property as a second home, and a failure to disclose an existing mortgage on other property. In addition, Manafort’s income was allegedly inflated by as much as $4 million in documents submitted to the Bank of California, they said.

Gates’ admission that he embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars from Manafort came as a surprise and only raised more questions about his damaged character. But the government has a possible back-up: much of what is alleged against Manafort is contained in emails and bank documents.

Ellis, known for his wit and his impatience, has set a torrid pace in the Virginia courtroom. That could present a double-edged sword for the jury of six men and six women. Is testimony coming at the jury too fast for the six men and six women to grasp a complex white-collar case involving complicated international financial dealings? Or does the speed benefit the government by saving the jury from hours of dry testimony about incremental financial transactions?

Right now, the defense is a big question mark. Lead Manafort attorney Kevin Downing engaged in an aggressive effort to discredit Gates, pointing out how he stole from his former boss to pay for the expenses of a mistress in London. But their questioning of other government witnesses has been uneven and spare. Now it’s their turn to present their case.

  • Indian-Origin man sentenced for 6 years in UK

Indian-Origin man sentenced for 6 years in UK

LONDON(TIP):  An Indian-origin man has been sentenced to six years of imprisonment for the death of two women in a road accident in northern England in 2016. He was checking his mobile while driving.

The 26-year-old youth has also been banned from driving for nine years.

Mohmed Patel was checking his mobile phone and did not see Shelby Maher, 17, and Rachel Murphy, 23, as they crossed the road in Preston, Lancashire, in April 2016.

While Rachel Murphy died on the spot after being hit by Patel’s BMW, Shelby Maher died in a hospital later.

Another teenage girl in a group of five crossing the road was also seriously injured in the mishap. She was in hospital for a week.

Patel was sentenced to six-year imprisonment by the Preston Crown Court on August 7, which concluded that his distraction while driving had resulted in the crash.

“No text was so urgent that it was worth the life of these two young women. It is clear the defendant failed to see any of those people in the road,” Judge Altham said after being told that Patel’s phone revealed he had sent two text messages to his girlfriend around the time of the crash asking her whereabouts.

The court was told that 42 seconds after he sent the text, he was calling the 999-emergency number from the crash scene.

Patel claimed that he had sent text to his partner while stopped at a nearby set of traffic lights and then replaced the phone in the glove compartment. But another motorist told the court that the accused had overtaken him shortly before the crash and he had seen Patel holding a mobile phone in his hand as he rested it on the steering wheel.

“This was plainly an avoidable distraction. So distracted was he that at the point of collision he may as well have been driving with his eyes closed,” the judge said.

He also noted that Patel had shown “no significant remorse” but rather “sadness for the predicament he now finds himself in” and jailed him for two counts of causing death by dangerous driving.

Patel had admitted that his driving, while taking his mother and sister on a shopping trip, was careless, but denied the more serious charge of dangerous driving.

“I do accept I should have seen the pedestrians in the road. I don’t know why I didn’t see them. But it was not because of my mobile phone,” Patel had told the court.

Meanwhile, the victims’ families said they were disappointed with the length of sentence.

Shelby’s mother Melanie Maher said: “He has ruined all our lives, my child’s life, I’m never going to see my daughter again because of him and I hate him.”

2 Indians held in Washington State for staying illegally: Officials

WASHINGTON(TIP): US border patrol agents have arrested two Indian nationals on charges of illegally staying in the country, the law enforcement agency said on Wednesday, July 25.

The two persons, arrested over the weekend, are now being processed for removal, the agency said in a media release.

The US Border Patrol said they encountered the Indian nationals during a routine immigration check operations of all passengers at a bus terminal in Spokane, Washington.

Agents spoke with one individual who presented an expired B-2 tourist visa issued more than a year ago. They took the man into custody due to his expired visa, the release stated.

The B-2 visa is issued for short visits to the US for vacation or medical treatment.

Agents determined the other individual illegally crossed into the US from Mexico in May 2011. Investigation revealed he was also in possession of a fraudulent social security card.

Both individuals were processed for removal and transported to the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma to await their immigration hearing.

“The use of fake documents, while commonly used, is often difficult to detect due to the limited amount of interaction that our agents have with the public while conducting enforcement operations at the transportation facility,” patrol agent in-charge Zach Crosson said.

  • 3 Fort Worth bank employees shot during attempted robbery

3 Fort Worth bank employees shot during attempted robbery

FORT WORTH, TEXAS(TIP): Three employees were shot during an attempted bank robbery in the Arlington Heights neighborhood of Fort Worth Thursday, July 19 morning.

Fort Worth Police Department’s Officer Chris Britt said it happened around 9:20 a.m. at the Veritex Community Bank on Merrick Street.

According to preliminary reports, at least two men walked into the bank with weapons and fired shots.

Three of the bank’s female employees were shot. All were taken to area hospitals in serious condition. Their injuries appear to be non-life-threatening, according to MedStar officials.

The president and CEO of Veritex Community Bank said “we ask for a healthy and positive outcome for our three teammates which we believe is the best medicine. We will provide the Fort Worth Police Dept. With any assistance and cooperation they request of us. “

Officers are still searching for the gunmen in the area. Britt did not have a description of them and said it’s not yet clear if they got away on foot or in a car.

A home on Blackmore Avenue was surrounded by heavily armed police for nearly four hours. Investigators are gathering evidence at the scene where three people were detained in the area of this home.

Just after 11 a.m., officers swarmed around the home in the 5700 block of Blackmore Avenue. A woman that was inside the home walked out frantically as guns were aimed at her.

SWAT team members arrived on the scene and secured the perimeter of the home and nearby residents were evacuated just as a precaution.

Police and Federal agents on the scene told FOX 4 News this white vehicle in the driveway next door was the suspect’s vehicle from the bank shooting.

Two Fort Worth PD armored vehicles moved into the front of the home to provide officers with cover. From Sky 4, a huge police presence could be seen and SWAT officers strategically placed all around the home.

For several hours, police worked patiently to try to make contact with who might be inside. Once a search warrant was obtained SWAT members moved into the home.

Police say they have three people detained, but it’s still not clear if they are connected to the attempted bank robbery.

“If anybody in the area saw anything unusual, vehicles leaving the scene quickly that now hearing about this seems odd, if they were any people running from the area that seems odd… if you saw anything that might seem unusual, please give us a call,” he said.

One resident who lives in Arlington Heights described it as a very old and quiet neighborhood.

“There are a lot of businesses and a lot of residences mixed together so as far as I know, this is very unusual for there to be a shooting here. But there is a lot of petty crime in the area as there is all over the city and the county,” said Brent Hyder, who lives in Arlington Heights.

    He called the shooting appalling.

“I’m really sad for those ladies. That’s just unconscionable,” he said.

Veritex’s Merrick Street branch is closed for the day, the bank said on its website.

The FBI has the lead role on the investigation as authorities continue their effort to ID the suspects from evidence in the bank and any possible surveillance video.

  • Charges against Stormy Daniels dropped hours after arrest: Police said they made a mistake in arresting porn film star

Charges against Stormy Daniels dropped hours after arrest: Police said they made a mistake in arresting porn film star

COLUMBUS, OHIO(TIP):  Charges were dropped Thursday, July 12,  against porn actress Stormy Daniels, just hours after she was arrested while performing at an Ohio strip club and charged with letting patrons touch her in violation of a state law, an Associated Press report says.

Her attorney said she was set up in a Columbus police sting operation, something police deny.

Charging documents say Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, was arrested for touching a patron at a “sexually oriented” business in violation of the law commonly known as the Community Defense Act.

The documents said that Daniels, who was semi-nude, allegedly touched some of the patrons’ breasts and allowed them to touch her. She allegedly performed the same act with several officers who approached the stage and forced one officer’s head into her bare chest.

She was released on bail before 6 a.m. Thursday. Daniels posted $6,000.

Daniels’ attorney, Michael Avenatti, told The Associated Press that some patrons touched Daniels in a non-sexual” way during her performance. He told MSNBC later Thursday that police had prepared a sting operation with multiple officers. He said female undercover officers asked Daniels if they could place their face between her breasts.

“It was an absurd use of law enforcement resources,” Avenatti said.

The three counts against Daniels were first-degree misdemeanors, with a maximum penalty for one count would be six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Thursday afternoon, city prosecutors dropped the charges, saying the Ohio illegal touching law can’t be enforced because Daniels has only appeared once at the Columbus club.

The law refers to someone “who regularly appears nude or seminude” at a club. Avenatti successfully argued Daniels “has not appeared consistently and repeatedly at Sirens,” according to prosecutors.

Police said two other women were arrested along with Daniels. Prosecutors are also checking whether those women will be prosecuted, said City Attorney Zach Klein.

The police department “engages in these operations routinely,” said spokesman Sgt. Dean Worthington.

Avenatti posted on Twitter a statement by Daniels that said she apologized to her fans in Columbus, but she would not perform her previously scheduled Thursday night show.

  • Indian-Origin Man Killed Brother-in-Law in UK

Indian-Origin Man Killed Brother-in-Law in UK

LONDON (TIP): An Indian-origin paranoid, schizophrenic man, who was allowed into the UK following “an administrative error “, has been sentenced to five years in jail for murdering his brother-in-law.

Sukhwinder Singh, 41, became delusional and stabbed his brother-in-law to death before driving the dead body to West Bromwich police station in the West Midlands and handing himself in August 2017.

The man was jailed after pleading guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility at Wolverhampton Crown Court on June 29 and is set to receive psychiatric treatment before starting his sentence.

At the end of his prison term, Sukhwinder Singh will be deported to India.

“I have to say the circumstances of this offence lead me to conclude without hesitation that you are an extremely dangerous individual,” Judge Michael Challinor said at the sentencing hearing.

Sukhwinder Singh had killed his 39-year-old brother-in-law in August last year over suspicions that he was having an affair with his wife.

The UK court heard how Singh had killed a student union president in Jalandhar in 1998. He had been released from a Punjab jail after serving seven years for the murder. He was out on bail pending an appeal when he fled to the UK in 2007, on a six-month visa.

Following “an administrative error” by British authorities, Sukhwinder Singh was granted indefinite leave to remain (ILR) in the UK and successfully applied for British citizenship in 2011.

“You were illegally in this country, having fled India, where you should have been in prison serving a sentence for murder, and then you killed for a second time using a similar weapon, namely a knife,” the judge noted.

Prosecutors told the court that Sukhwinder Singh used heroin and crack cocaine which added to his paranoia.

Prosecutor Nigel Power told the court: “On the morning of Thursday, August 10, 2017, the defendant went into the front office of West Bromwich police station and said, ‘I have a dead body in the car’. He was telling the truth.

“The deceased was in the front passenger seat of his BMW car and had been killed by a single stab wound to the chest, which also cut the seat-belt almost in half.”

Sukhwinder Singh’s wife had voiced concerns over his mental health to the police and social services. On the day of the killing she was moving to a women’s refuge.

Detective Inspector Harry Harrison, from West Midlands Police’s homicide team, said: “This was an unusual case as Singh brought his victim to us; casually walking into the station to reveal Kumar was dead in his passenger seat. He had been driving around with Kumar dead next to him for hours before deciding to come to police. It was quickly established he had been responsible for the stabbing, and he will now serve time in prison to reflect that.”

  • Telugu actresses lured to Chicago in high-end prostitution scheme, feds charge

Telugu actresses lured to Chicago in high-end prostitution scheme, feds charge

CHICAGO, IL (TIP): At least five Telugu actresses were allegedly lured into prostitution in the U.S., by an undocumented Indian American couple, according to an indictment unsealed in the U.S. District Court of Northern Illinois last week.

Recently unsealed federal charges accuse a Chicago couple of Indian descent of running a high-end prostitution ring to lure actresses from Tollywood — a nickname for the lively Telugu-language film scene in southern India — to the U.S. and advertise them for sex at Indian conferences and cultural events across the country.

While here on temporary visas, at least five actresses were sometimes forced to stay in a dingy, two-story apartment building in Chicago’s Belmont Cragin neighborhood waiting for their next “date,” the charges alleged. They also met clients in hotels at conferences in Dallas, New Jersey and Washington.

The prostitution scheme was allegedly masterminded by Kishan Modugumudi, 34, an Indian businessman who rose to become a player in the Tollywood movie industry and co-produced several hit films.

Here are the incriminating details that came to the fore which helped blow the lid on the scam.

The accused, Kishan Modugumudi and Chandrakala Modugumudi, both natives of Hyderabad but illegally living in the US, took Tollywood actresses and models to USA in the name of various conferences and ‘star nights’ but conducted a prostitution racket instead

Tollywood actresses, models and anchors were taken on B1 and B2 visitor visas to USA. The accused collected $1,000 to $3,000 for ‘one-time’ sex with the actresses. At least 76 airline tickets were purchased from November 8, 2016 to November 29, 2017. Most bookings were made at Comfort Suites in Schiller Park, Illinois in the name of Kishan and Vebha

Kishan Modugumudi – also known as Sreeraj Chennuppati – and his wife, Chandrakala Purnima Modugumudi, were arrested on April 30, and charged with several counts of “importation of aliens for prostitution.” The couple is currently in detention with the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Illinois. Their next court appearance is scheduled for July 9.

Federal agents retrieved text messages from Kishan Modugumudi’s cell phones that contained conversations between him and customers. One of the victims reached US to attend Telugu Association of Southern California (TASC) star night event in California on Nov 8, 2017. But she reached two days after the event and travelled to Chicago, raising suspicions of the Homeland Security Investigations. On probe, the victim said she came to attend another conference of North America Telugu Society (NATS) held in Schaumburg, Illinois, on November 25, 2017.

According to the 42-page indictment, Kishan Modugumudi, who promoted himself as a Tollywood agent, and his wife bought airline tickets for the five victims – at various times – on the premise that they would be performing at Telugu and other Indian American conferences. The Modugumudis allegedly housed the young women at their Chicago home and area hotels, and held their passports, rendering the victims virtual captives.

The women were then ordered to perform sex on men who arranged the transactions by text message with the Modugumudis, according to the indictment. Several chats were displayed as evidence in the indictment, which portrayed customers haggling over prices and choice of woman.

Customers paid anywhere from $800 to $3,000 to have sex with the would-be actresses, the indictment alleged, adding that Modugumudi would text customers photos of the women, and customers would specify whom they wanted. In one such exchange documented in the indictment, a customer asked the pimp for the woman he had sex with “last time” for $800 but Modugumudi said he could only send the woman for $2,500.

“I’m not rich. I can’t effort (sic) thousands of dollars,” replied the john, but Modugumudi haggled him down to $2,000, according to the indictment document.

After the encounter, the actress would allegedly text Chandrakala, also known as Vibha or Vebha, to let her know the type of encounter. In one such text documented in the indictment, a woman reported that she had given her customer “a blow job on le.” “But he was very happy,” she texted, and Vibha sent her a “thumbs up” emoticon, according to the document.

The actresses were not named, but simply referred to as Victims A, B, C, D, and E. In the first case, Victim A arrived in Chicago on a tourist visa Nov. 20, and said she was being honored by the Telugu Association of Southern California on Nov. 18, according to the indictment. Her visa indicated she was an actress.

But immigration agents became suspicious when she landed in Chicago, rather than Southern California, two days after the purported event. Victim A then allegedly she was coming for a different conference hosted by the North American Telugu Society on Nov. 25, 2017. Both NATS and TASC told federal agents no such conferences were planned on those dates.

Another young Indian actress arrived at O’Hare International Airport last Christmas Eve on a flight from Abu Dhabi. Carrying a temporary visa, she told customs agents she had come to the U.S. to attend an Indian association event at the behest of her manager and would be staying only a couple weeks.

Around that time, a news story on the Web site indiaglitz alleged that the Modugumudis – who are well-known in Southern India – were running a prostitution racket in the U.S. Victim A was questioned by federal authorities again on Dec. 25, 2017, when she said she was headed to Irving, Texas, to perform at a New Year’s Eve celebration. According to the indictment, she admitted that during her previous time in the U.S., Kishan Modugumudi, who is also known as Raju, had arranged for her to be engaged in prostitution. Victim A told agents that she did not actually engage in prostitution but “met with customers for 30 minutes and had a conversation.”

But text messages indicated she told Vibha which customers were “good tippers.” Vibha reminded her that she should bathe between encounters, according to the indictment document. In one text message, Victim A told Vibha that she “did it.” She later told federal agents that Kishan had threatened her, saying he would harm her and her family if she did not continue, or if she told anyone. She allegedly was not allowed to leave the couple’s home.

Victims B, C, D, and E all related similar stories of being lured by false promises of performing at a show. Vibha kept track of each encounter and allegedly paid out $1,000 for each purported show. According to the indictment, one customer later explained to federal agents that Vibha was known in the Telugu community as “one of the women to go to or contact regarding having sex with actresses.”

Indian American Illinois University student Pravin Varughese ‘s murder case Trial begins

ILLIONOIS(TIP): Lovely Varughese, the mother of Indian American Pravin Varughese will finally see the man accused of killing her son after four years as the trial begun on June 4th.

Gaege Bethune, who faces a charge of first-degree murder in the death of Pravin Varughese, appeared in the court on Monday, June 4thto face the trail. His final pre-trial hearing was held last month.

Varughese, a student of Southern Illinois University was on his way home from a party, but he never reached his townhouse near the campus.

The teenager placed a desperate call to a friend around 12.30 a.m., during which he reportedly sounded out-of-breath.

Varughese’s body was found in the woods in an area roughly three miles from the SIU campus after an intense search for nearly six days.

The accused Bethune, a resident of Eldorado, Illinois, is not a student of Southern Illinois University, where Varughese was a student at the time of his death. But the indictment report says he admitted that he delivered “multiple punches to the head and face, rendering (Varughese) ‘dead weight.’”

After the final pre-trial hearing Lovely Varughese had told media “I’m pretty confident on the evidence they have, and I’m just waiting for the jury to hear the evidence.”

She had also added that the family was all prepared for the trial of Gaege Bethune.

According to the statement provided by Bethune to police, he gave Varughese a ride on a frigid February night. He also admitted that he was drunk but said the deceased was the first to start an altercation and refused to get out of the car.

He also added that when the Illinois state trooper approached, Varughese escaped into the woods.

The case was almost closed after the Jackson County State’s Attorney Michael Carr approved the police finding that Varughese died of hypothermia.

After the relentless follow-through of Lovely Varughese, who even accused the Illinois police of foul play, a second autopsy was conducted, and it revealed that there were at least three major injuries to his head from blunt trauma, and his eye was badly damaged. The victim also looked to have tried some sort of a defensive move.

In March 2015, Carr stepped down from the case and turned it over to Patrick Delfino, a special prosecutor in the Illinois State Appellate Court.

Indian origin girl shot dead in car hijacking in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG(TIP): Sadia Sukhra, a nine-year-old Indian origin girl was killed after being shot during a car hijacking in South Africa, outraging the community members and sparking angry protests in Durban.

Sadia, a grade four student from Chatsworth, was on her way to school with her father when three armed men allegedly ran into their car. They allegedly forced her father out of the car and sped away with her.

In an ensuing chase, the carjackers and community members shot at each other. The suspects later crashed the car near a park. The girl was found shot and critically injured while one of the suspects tumbled out of the car dead.

Sadia was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to her injuries.

A second carjacker was arrested by an off-duty policeman. A third suspect remains at large.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala confirmed that one of the hijackers was killed.

Following the incident, more than 3,000 members of the community gathered outside Chatsworth police station demanding swift police action.

As the small contingent of officers at the police station allegedly came under severe verbal abuse and threats of physical action from protestors, they resorted to firing rubber bullets, tear gas, and stun grenades to disperse the crowd, which included scores of children.

Chatsworth is an Indian township in Durban.

Mahendra Lillkan, chairperson of the local Crime Forum, said there had been a spike in crime in the area despite community patrols at night.

“It seems that the criminals have now resorted to striking at soft targets, such as parents taking their children to school, as we have seen with this tragic incident.”

Police and community leaders have appealed for calm amid fears that the protests would escalate as the distraught family prepared for the funeral.

Tributes for the little girl have poured in on social media as news of her shooting went viral.

Indian American arrested in Texas for trying to hire hitman to kill ex-lover and family

DALLAS(TIP): An Indian American man was arrested last week for allegedly trying to hire a hitman to kill four people, including his ex-girlfriend.

According to the official press release of the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, Rajesh Bakshi, 54, was arrested on April 17, after his plot to murder four Houston residents was foiled by an undercover police officer who pretended as the hitman.

Bakshi, a jilted-lover, wanted to kill his ex-girlfriend, her current boyfriend and her parents, and hired a hitman by paying a down payment of $1,500, said DA’s office.

“This operation saved lives in a very sensitive situation,” District Attorney Kim Ogg said. “Imagine how bad this could have been had it not been uncovered before it got to a real hitman.”

The DA’s office said Bakshi has been harassing the woman, whom he dated some time ago, for months before hiring a killer to wipe her and her family.

The woman reported to the court that Bakshi has been subjecting her to violence while they were in a relationship and after being rejected he started harassing her and the family.

It has been reported in the court document that the undercover police official disguised as a hitman was instructed by Bakshi to sprinkle cocaine near the bodies, once he completes his contract.

He also reportedly guided the contract killer on the pattern and method in which each member on the hit list has to be murdered. Bakshi insisted the police officer also take photographs of the victims once his mission is complete.

When he was arrested, Bakshi had nearly $13,000 in cash with him. If found guilty of solicitation of capital murder, Bakshi may face life imprisonment.

Bakshi, who is an employee at Dixie Corner Store, lives in Pearland with his wife, a 14-year-old son and twin daughters. His bail is set at $150,000 for each count.

Bakshi’s lawyer has requested the court to put his bail at $30,000. The lawyer told the court that he has a history of health issues, including diabetes and neurological disorders.

Bakshi, an Indian citizen, has also been asked to surrender his travel documents.

Indian Origin Woman Killed, Buried at UAE Home

SHARJAH (TIP): According to a local media report, a 36-year-old Indian Origin woman’s decomposed body was found by the police at her house in UAE’s Sharjah city on April 26th.

The woman’s body was hidden underneath the floor of her house and was only recovered after the police used sniffer dogs to help find the body. Police suspect the woman’s husband to have killed and buried her inside the house. The reports further said that the husband, who belongs to Kerala, had left the United Arab Emirates and returned to India leaving a ‘For Rent’ sign put up on the front door of the house.

Initial investigations by the police revealed that the accused husband, who also had another wife, had sent his other wife to India with his two children before committing the crime.

It was only after the woman’s brother could not find anybody at her house that the incident surfaced, according to Sharjah police.

The woman’s brother used to speak to her every day, according to police officials. When she had stopped responding to her brother’s calls, he had come to Sharjah from India to look for the woman.

He also filed a missing person complaint with the Sharjah police on April 9.

“A missing person report was received from the woman’s brother, who told police that he used to speak to his sister daily but one day, she stopped answering her phone,” Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police, Major-General Saif Al Ziri Al Shamsi was quoted by Gulf News.

It was further reported that the police acted on the complaint and sent a search team to the woman’s house in Sharjah’s Maysaloon area after receiving permission from the public prosecution.

During the search, the police found a few tiles from the floor of a room missing. It was then that the police brought in sniffer dogs and uncovered the woman’s body from underneath.

The woman’s body was sent to a forensic laboratory for an autopsy after the brother identified her.

The police have also identified the woman’s husband through an iris scan and fingerprints they recovered from the house.

An arrest warrant has been issued for the husband by Interpol, the police said.

SACRAMENTO(TIP): Details are emerging about the woman behind the YouTube headquarters shooting Tuesday, April 3 that injured three people in San Bruno, California. Police said Thursday, April 5 that Nasim Aghdam legally purchased the firearm in San Diego on January 16, 2018 from a gun dealer in her name.

It was a 9mm Smith and Wesson that had a capacity of 10 rounds. San Bruno police confirm that one of the magazines was empty and that Aghdam loaded a second to fire more shots at YouTube employees before she turned the firearm on herself.

However, authorities have not been able to confirm how many total shots were fired and that there is a possibility that the first magazine may have not been fully loaded.

  • Being Salman: Superstardom does not guarantee legal immunity

Being Salman: Superstardom does not guarantee legal immunity

Finally, the law has caught up with superstar Salman Khan. All those who felt his earlier acquittal by the Rajasthan High Court in the 1998 Jodhpur blackbuck and chinkara poaching cases was a travesty of justice can now breathe easy. A Jodhpur Trial Court has pronounced him guilty, thus sending out an unambiguous signal that not even a hugely famous star is above the law. For too long, an impression has been gaining ground that star power can sway court judgments. Salman did get away in a more serious charge of allegedly running over five persons, killing one. That verdict had lent further credence to the widespread belief that onscreen stars are invincible in real life too. The Jodhpur Court judgment puts things in the right perspective.

As it is, the poaching case has been dragging for nearly two decades, reinstating once more how wheels of justice move tardily. And when it is perceived to be working for the privileged, it does little to elevate the judiciary’s image. The judgment establishes that Chief Judicial Magistrate Khatri meant business and could clearly delineate between Salman the person and the star. This difference is often blurred not just by frenzied fans, but those in power too. Not too long ago, perhaps taken in by Salman’s successful run at the box office and massive fan following, he became India’s Goodwill Ambassador for Rio Olympics. CJM Khatri, however, seemed suitably unimpressed by the entertainer’s mega stardom or his Samaritan acts off the silver screen.

Salman is in the dock regarding the infamous hit-and-run case, whose verdict has already been challenged and an appeal by the Maharashtra Government admitted in the Supreme Court. Let it be said that the rule of law must prevail, and guilt must be proved beyond reasonable doubt. Let no one feel that Salman walked away scot-free or was hounded courtesy his mega-star status. Justice should not only be done but seen to be done. Star or no star, law cannot be leveraged to the advantage of a few, least of all the well-heeled.

  • Salman Khan sentenced to five-year imprisonment in blackbuck killing case

Salman Khan sentenced to five-year imprisonment in blackbuck killing case

Actors Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Neelam, and Jodhpur resident Dushyant Singh have been given the benefit of doubt and acquitted as co-accused

JODHPUR, INDIA(TIP): Actor Salman Khan was on Thursday, April 5, sentenced to five years in jail after being convicted in a 19-year-old blackbuck poaching case by a court in Jodhpur.

Chief Judicial Magistrate (Jodhpur Rural) also imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 on Khan. The actor was taken to the Central Jail in Jodhpur from the court. He has the option of filing an appeal in the Sessions Court, reports our correspondent Mohammad Iqbal from Jodhpur. Unless the sentence is suspended, he will spend the night in jail.

Khan is involved in four cases related to blackbuck/chinkara poaching. He has been accused of killing two chinkaras at Bhavad village in Rajasthan in September 1998, a chinkara at the Ghoda farms in the State the next month and two blackbuck near Kankani village in the State in the same month. In addition, he is also accused of using two firearms with alleged expired licenses.

    ‘Judgement came as a surprise’

In an official statement, Mr. Khan’s lawyer Anand Desai said that the judgement came as a “surprise.”

    The statement reads:

“We respect the decision of the Hon’ble Court. While we are studying the judgement it just came as a surprise, as the entire investigation, and facts of this case were the same as those for which Salman has been acquitted by the Hon’ble High Court of Rajasthan in two cases, and even by the Hon’ble CJM in the Arms Act matter for the alleged offence on the very same night as is the subject matter of the present case. Also, in the present case the Hon’ble Court has acquitted all the 5 co-accused which would imply that Salman was out hunting alone in the middle of the night in a remote area outside Jodhpur. We have preferred an appeal to the Hon’ble Sessions Court and applied for an urgent hearing today. The Hon’ble Sessions Court will hear the appeal for suspension of the sentence / bail at 1030 tomorrow.”

Khan to spend the night in jail

Salman Khan’s counsel has moved bail application in the court of Additional Sessions Judge. It will come up for hearing on Friday morning. The actor will spend the night in Central Jail of Jodhpur.

    Four actors, Jodhpur resident acquitted

The co-accused, actors Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Neelam, and Jodhpur resident Dushyant Singh have been given the benefit of doubt and acquitted as the evidence against them was not strong enough.

Public prosecutor Bhawani Singh said he would speak to the government on the acquittal of other actors and decide on filing appeals in the Sessions Court.

    Quantum of punishment

Khan has been convicted under Section 9 and 51 of the Wildlife Protection Act. The maximum sentence under the law is six years.

If the sentence is for three years or less, the magistrate’s court is likely to suspend the punishment, reports Mohammad Iqbal. If more, Khan will have to move the Sessions Court for bail.

The charge against the other actors was under Section 149 (unlawful assembly) of the IPC. Their acquittal means the court has accepted that there is no sufficient evidence to prove this.

A brief timeline of the cases:

September-October 1998: Khan, along with his co-stars of Hum Saath Saath Hain, are accused of killing blackbuck/chinkaras during the shooting of the film.

February 2006: Khan is convicted under the Wildlife Act and given a one-year jail term for killing two chinkaras at Bhavad in September 1998. This is overturned after an appeal.

April 2006: A Jodhpur sessions court gives him a five-year-prison term in the second case, where he was accused of hunting a blackbuck in Ghoda farms. He spends three days in jail and gets bail.

June 2006: A Jodhpur court frames charges against the actors in the third case. The charges were framed against Khan under Section 51 (hunting) of the Wildlife Protection Act and against Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre, Neelam and Dushyant Singh under Section 52 (abetment) of the Act.

November 2013: The Rajasthan High Court suspends the five-year sentence.

January 2015: The Supreme Court sets aside the High Court’s stay on the sentence.

July 2016: The High Court acquits Khan in the two chinakara poaching cases.

January 2017: A Jodhpur court acquits Khan in the Arms Case, where he was accused of possessing and weapons with an expired license during the hunt for chinkaras and blackbuck.

    Khan pleads ‘not guilty’

Khan had pleaded “not guilty” in the case and claimed that only a forensic report saying that the endangered animal died of “natural cause” was true.

“The rest of the evidence [against me] is false,” Khan said in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate in Jodhpur while recording his statement in the 18-year-old case accusing him of hunting the animals.

Khan killed the deer, says driver

The man who was driving the jeep used by Khan reiterated in 2016 his claim that the actor shot the animal. The statement by Harish Dulani, who was reported to be “missing,” came two days after the 50-year-old actor was acquitted by the High Court in two poaching cases.

Police gun down hit-and-run driver who fatally struck man amid rage-filled crime spree

    Mohammed Jaffer

NASSAU COUNTY, NY (TIP): A hit-and-run driver who killed a Brooklyn pedestrian Monday, March 5, was later fatally shot in a bizarre confrontation with police on Long Island, authorities said.

The fatal shooting in Great Neck capped a bloody, rage-fueled crime spree that began at 8:35 p.m. Saturday, March 10 when the suspect punched out a 77-year-old man in the South Bronx and robbed him of $20, authorities said.

At 3:45 a.m. Monday, the 46-year-old culprit, whose name wasn’t immediately released, struck a 50-year-old pedestrian at Metropolitan Ave. and Grand St. in Williamsburg.

The pedestrian, who has a young son and lives in Brooklyn and relatives in Mexico, died of head trauma at Woodhull Hospital less than an hour later, authorities said.

The spree then spread to Manhattan, where the killer carjacked a Honda Odyssey from a woman delivering newspapers at Madison and Montgomery Sts. at 4:30 a.m., leaving the hit-and-run vehicle behind.

About 10 minutes later, at West and Harrison Sts. in Tribeca, he punched the driver of a 2018 Acura in the face and switched cars again.

His rampage ended at Maple St. and East Shore Road in Great Neck at about 10:30 a.m. — when the 46-year-old, by then driving a Volkswagen, refused to move at a stop sign, Nassau County police said. When two van drivers behind him started honking, he emerged, baseball bat in hand and the clobbered driver in the head.

A cop on patrol confronted him, but he refused to drop his bat. A good Samaritan then rushed to help, and the suspect hit him in the head with the bat too, Ryder said. “And the officer had no option but to fire,” he said.

Medics rushed the bat attacker to North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, where he died. The bat-attack victims were also treated at the same hospital, while the officer went to Nassau County Medical Center.

Man kills his 1-year-old daughter, stepdad and half-brother in Brooklyn home before shooting himself

    Mohammed Jaffer

BROOKLYN, NY (TIP): A festering family feud ended in a Brooklyn bloodbath, with a deranged gunman executing his 1-year-old daughter, stepdad and half-brother before turning the gun on himself.

The bodies of Terrance Briggs and his three relatives were discovered Wednesday, March 14 in the blood-spattered apartment when Briggs’ mother returned home around 5 a.m., police said.

Briggs marched methodically from room to room, pumping bullets into the heads of his victims, including helpless little Laylay Briggs, Loyd Drain Jr., 57, and his 16-year-old namesake son Loyd III.

Briggs, whose previous domestic battles with the stepdad brought cops to their home at least twice, saved the last bullet for himself, cops said.

Manhattan dad recalls shock of learning nanny killed his two kids

The little girl’s mother, Olivia Callender, was away on an overnight gambling trip when the horror unfolded, police sources said.

“My baby! My baby,” the 27-year-old woman wailed at a prayer vigil outside the Riverdale Osborne Towers in Brownsville.

“She’s gone. She’s not coming back. My Laylay. Oh my God,” she cried, her tear-streaked face buried in her hands.

Cops believe Briggs, 27, shot his stepfather first in the bathroom, then blasted his teen brother in a bedroom as he played video games. He finally killed his own daughter in a second bedroom.
