SUNNY LEONE: STILL DON’T THINK I FIT IN BOLLYWOOD

She ventured into Bollywood in 2012 with the erotic ‘Jism 2’ thriller and has been on a roll since then. Indo-Canadian actress Sunny Leone says she felt like an outsider when she initially ventured into the Hindi film industry and still feels she doesn’t fit in.

Asked if she ever felt like an outsider, Sunny told IANS over e-mail from Los Angeles: “Yes, of course, but that would be anyone who is new to the job. I still don’t think I completely fit in (Bollywood).”

At the same time, the ‘Mastizaade’ star feels she has met some nice people in Bollywood who she has ‘grown fond of.’

Sunny has tasted success with films like ‘Jism 2’ and ‘Ek Paheli Leela’ and has faced failure with movies like ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’ and ‘One Night Stand’ in her four-year-long journey.

Do bad times ever affect her? “Yes, it does, I don’t think I would be human if it didn’t. But I have a great support system and try and find the good out of the bad always,” she said.

The ‘Ragini MMS 2’ actress has also been roped in for a song for superstar Shah Rukh Khan-starrer ‘Raees’, which is directed by Rahul Dholakia. The song, which is picturised on Sunny and Shah Rukh, is reportedly a new take on the 1980 chartbuster

‘Laila O laila’ from ‘Qurbaani’. The original track featured Feroz Khan and Zeenat Amaan.

Sunny, whose real name is Karenjit Kaur Vohra, said: “I just did a song (with Shah Rukh), it’s a small part in a very big film. I am very grateful for the opportunity. Hope I get a chance to act opposite Shah Rukh one day,” she said.

Would she like to star with the other two Khan’s of Bollywood -Salman and Aamir?

    “Ah yes…Who wouldn’t?” she asserted.

The 35-year-old star will be seen walking at the forthcoming New York Fashion Week (NYFW) becoming the first Bollywood star to be on the ramp at the fashion event.

  • A Bharatiya Parivar Bill: The ‘rent-a-womb’ practice to go

A Bharatiya Parivar Bill: The ‘rent-a-womb’ practice to go

In a bid to check commercialization of surrogacy, the new draft Bill approved by the Union Cabinet has gone to another extreme. It aims to reinforce the traditional idea of Bharatiya Parivar, allowing a mami, chachi or bhabhi to carry a surrogate child for the married infertile relative. If enacted, the Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill 2016 would ban the “rent-a-womb” practice. Since 2002, when commercial surrogacy became legal in India, it grew into an unregulated industry worth$2 billion, exploited by foreigners and NRIs, who paid underprivileged women for renting their womb, to escape tough laws on surrogacy in their own land.

Women rights activists demanded concrete steps to regulate the sector like registering surrogate mothers, fixing compensation and eliminating the middleman. In the absence of proper legislation, there have been instances of surrogate children getting entangled in an international legal web or just abandoned. Legislation was indeed needed. The Bill does take some progressive steps like giving legal rights to the surrogate child and banning repeated pregnancies. But it is imprudent in this age to expect a woman to bear a child as an act of altruism. It would be hard for needy couples to find a relative who has one healthy child and is willing to bear another one whom she can’t claim as her own. The Bill deals an unkind blow to infertile couples.

Imposing a ban is a simple option; regulating the ban is the real challenge. The organ transplant ban has shown how things get pushed underground in case of a demand-supply mismatch. Citing “Indian ethos” for denying the surrogacy option to single people, homosexuals and live-in couples, the new Bill tends to stigmatize a large section of society and ignores the changing ground reality. Anyone can adopt a child, irrespective of the marital status, under a different law. The new Bill articulates prejudices associated with the overly nationalist government at the Centre. A puerile comment by the Foreign Affairs Minister that people have surrogate kids for “fashion and glamour” takes a dig at the Khans of Bollywood and reinforces the prejudice.

  • Euro 2016 boots Adidas sales higher

Euro 2016 boots Adidas sales higher

BERLIN (TIP): A year of high-profile sports sponsorship has so far paid off for Adidas, with sales at its core brand up 25 percent thanks to events including the Euro 2016 football tournament.

Higher sales of items branded with the Bavarian firm’s famous three stripes were “mostly due to two-digit increases in the important categories of running, football and training, as well as Adidas Originals and Adidas neo,” two fashion branches, the firm said in a statement.

“We’re inspiring our consumers with one-of-a-kind experiences,” chief executive Herbert Hainer said, “and that will continue onwards.”

While the final in Paris pitted two Nike-sponsored teams, France and Portugal, against one another, Adidas markings were visible on other strong performers including the German Mannschaft and the Spanish national team.

Following the boost from Euro 2016, Adidas-sponsored athletes and teams will be in the spotlight again at the Rio Olympics from August 6.

Adidas saw double-digit sales increases in several global markets in the second quarter, with a 32 percent gain in north America and 30 percent each in western Europe and China.

Sales grew more slowly in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States at just five percent — slightly allaying fears of a blow to the brand from Russia’s economic slowdown.

Across the whole group, revenues increased between April and June by 13 percent to 4.4 billion euros ($4.9 billion), Adidas reported in preliminary results released at the end of July.

Adidas doubled its net profits over the same period in 2015 to 291 million euros.

The strong result in the second quarter was partly down to Adidas breaking off its sponsorship of London football club Chelsea, bringing in estimated savings of between 50 and 100 million euros.

Two of the Adidas group’s other brands, Reebok and golf supplier TaylorMade, each reported seven percent growth in the second quarter.

Adidas announced in May that it would “actively seek a buyer” for TaylorMade as it suffered poor performance —preferring instead to focus on its own Adidas Golf marque.

  • Modi expansion: Shiv Sena roars, Akali Dal chooses silence

Modi expansion: Shiv Sena roars, Akali Dal chooses silence

When asked to comment on the recent changes at the Centre, a Shiv Sena leader observed: “It was the BJP government’s expansion, not the NDA’s”. NDA coalition partners have reason to be unhappy. They have not just been left out in the ministry expansion; they were neither consulted nor briefed. Basic niceties and coalition dharma, it appears, are no longer in fashion. By now reconciled to the way it is treated in “Modi Durbar”, the Akali Dal leadership has stopped complaining. Only the Shiv Sena makes public its anger at the deliberate neglect. Unafraid of jeopardizing its arrangement in Maharashtra, the Shiv Sena’s reaction varied from “we do not beg for Cabinet berths” to questioning the caliber of Modi’s ministers. In the BJP’s growth and expansion scheme in states, allies serve a limited purpose.

BJP leaders’ arrogant behavior annoys the Shiv Sena but the Akali Dal has apparently learnt to put up with it. Whatever the portfolio, it appears content with the Badal bahu’s adjustment in the ministry. The Centre’s “discrimination with Punjab” used to be a recurring theme of Chief Minister Badal’s speeches at one time. It is a different tune he plays today. If he does make a demand – like seal the border – it is more to shrug off responsibility for the drug menace than genuinely find a solution. Larger issues – terror attacks, neglect of agriculture, meagre hikes in MSPs, river cleanup, Central stand on SYL etc – no longer agitate the Badals as they did in the past. Only Delhi Akali leader Manjit Singh GK has shown some courage while accusing the Modi government of having “the same mindset as the Congress on the issue of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots”.

The RBI has pointed to a loss of Rs 12,000 crore of bank loans in the wheat procurement in Punjab, but both the Central and Punjab governments have failed to come clean on the issue. A cover-up in this day and age does not last long. An otherwise aggressive Akali leadership turns meek while taking up Punjab’s legitimate demands with the Centre. It has a right to keep its peace with Modi but, as a Congress leader has pointed out, Punjab is under-represented at the Centre.

  • New York based Michelin-star chef Hemant Mathur turns a restaurant baron

New York based Michelin-star chef Hemant Mathur turns a restaurant baron

With six restaurants in his pocket the Michelin Star chef is now certainly a restaurant baron. When this man landed in New York 22 years ago with his Indian culinary expertise, he had a tough job ahead – to win over New Yorkers’ hearts with distinctive Indian tastes & flavors, not the typical ones. In a few years he not only achieved that but also became one of USA’s top Tandoor masters and the main inspiration behind the success of some of the city’s top Indian restaurants. And now Hemant Mathur, one of the top five Indian chefs in America (as picked by GQ Magazine), owns six of the top Indian restaurants in New York City. These are – Chola, Chhote Nawab, Dhaba, Haldi, Kokum and Malai Marke. In the menu and offerings of these restaurants he brings 30 years of culinary expertise and professionalism, each specializing in distinctive and Indian regional cuisines.

Mathur’s career began at the Rambagh Palace Taj Hotel in his hometown Jaipur when he was just 17. His next job was at the world renowned Bukhara Restaurant in the Maurya Sheraton Hotel in Delhi where Mathur perfected his tandoor prowess. After this early training, he served as a private chef for British financier Sir James Goldsmith, cricketer Imran Khan’s former father in law, in Mexico, and then returned to India as the opening chef for Sonar Gaon in Calcutta’s Taj Bengal Hotel before he was recruited by a group of German restaurateurs to bring his craft to Berlin’s Seeterrson and Kashmir Palace. In 1994 he landed in America.

One of Hemant’s restaurants-Haldi-on Lexington Avenue
One of Hemant’s restaurants-Haldi-on Lexington Avenue

During his early years in New York, and before he earned his ‘stars’, he contributed to the success of some of the city’s top Indian restaurants at that time, and in the process laid the groundwork to elevate the popularity and respect of this ancient ethnic cuisine.

Working with the late Raji Jallepali, he created huge buzz behind the line at Tamarind, that he helped open in 2000. In 2002 he served as Executive Chef of Diwan Grill and then moved on to the popular eatery Amma. In 2004, Mathur teamed up with Suvir Saran and started Devi where he helmed the kitchen for six years. In 2007, Devi became the country’s first Michelin-starred Indian restaurant.

In 2010, he launched Tulsi in the upper midtown area. It soon became a hugely popular fine dining destination in the city and earned its Michelin-star rating in just a few months. Connoisseurs and newbies alike loved Tulsi, where Mathur’s specialty lamb chops, amazing starters and the handi biriyani delighted them. And the occasional chat with him as he emerged from the kitchen in his chef’s attire.

At the onset of 2015, upon becoming the executive chef and co-owner of six restaurants that he currently runs, Mathur had to sadly quit Tulsi. “I had no options. After managing six restaurants I had no time for Tusli”, he sighs.

The chef Hemant that most of his admirers know him as
The chef Hemant that most of his admirers know him as

In spite of all these accomplishments and accolades, the Indian restaurant mogul of New York City – Hemant Mathur is still a very down to earth man. He starts his day at “Chola” in Jackson Heights, and then moves to midtown to spend time at “Curry Hill” where he oversees “Chhote Nawab”, “Dhaba”, “Haldi”, and “Kokum”– and finally heads down to “Malai Marke” in East village, always staying close to the kitchen and, most importantly, creating signature eats and dishes inspired by each restaurant’s theme and its regional focus.

He looks after all his guests and diners personally, paying attention to his old friends and newcomers alike. But some of his fans still feel sad as they miss the man in his trademark white chef’s outfit and the mouth watering dishes he used to personally prepare himself. “That’s not a problem at all. Just give me a call before you come to any of my restaurants and tell me what you want to have. I’ll put on my chef’s dress and go to the kitchen to cook. I’ll always be there for you”, assures Mathur who is not only food critics’ darling but loved by all restaurant goers for his warmth and kind gestures.

Recently, we descended on one of his restaurants – Haldi- on Lexington Avenue. We had with us some famous personalities from the music world. And we wanted to treat them to delectable Indian food. MS Cathy Cheongmi Park from South Korea is a world famous pianist. MS Meeryung Hall, also from South Korea, is a famous singer. MS Rajlakshmi Ghosh is a well-known pianist and a fashion designer based in Kolkata. Hemant saw to it that he served them a variety which had them singing praises of the food, and of course, the chef himself. They are the only ones to have admired his culinary expertise. There are so many who carry the nostalgic memories of the tasty bites at the hands of this genius of a chef. At least, we look forward to visiting his restaurants as often as I can.

  • In Germany, woman caught smuggling cocaine in breast implants

In Germany, woman caught smuggling cocaine in breast implants

BERLIN (TIP): A 24-year-old Colombian woman was arrested at Frankfurt airport after she was found to be carrying 1kg (2.2 pounds) of cocaine inside her breasts, German customs officials said on March 9.

Airport officials became suspicious after they found fresh operation scars below the woman’s breasts during a search on February 24 and she complained of severe pain.

The woman admitted to carrying drugs, which had been inserted into her body during a hastily arranged operation.

She was sent to a local hospital where doctors removed two 500-gram lumps of cocaine wrapped in plastic from each of her breasts.

The drugs have a market value of 200,000 euros ($220,000) and were destined for Spain, a customs spokesman said.

“This is the first case in Germany in which drugs have been smuggled in this fashion,” said spokesman Hans-Juergen Schmidt. Customs agents were shocked by what they said was the amateurish surgery. Schmidt said it showed how drugs smugglers “are completely indifferent to human life and the life-threatening conditions of their drug carriers”. The woman, who said she has three children in Colombia where she worked in agriculture, will be charged with drug trafficking and faces jail time.

  • Former first lady Nancy Reagan dies at 94 in California

Former first lady Nancy Reagan dies at 94 in California

LOS ANGELES (TIP): Nancy Reagan, the helpmate, backstage adviser and fierce protector of Ronald Reagan in his journey from actor to president – and finally during his 10-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease – has died. She was 94.

The former first lady died on Sunday at her home in Bel-Air, California, of congestive heart failure, said assistant Allison Borio.

Her best-known project as first lady was the “Just Say No” campaign to help kids and teens stay off drugs.

When she swept into the White House in 1981, the former Hollywood actress partial to designer gowns and pricey china was widely dismissed as a pre-feminist throwback, concerned only with fashion, decorating and entertaining.

By the time she moved out eight years later, Mrs. Reagan was fending off accusations that she was a behind-the-scenes “dragon lady” wielding unchecked power over the Reagan administration – and doing it based on astrology to boot.

All along she maintained that her only mission was to back her “Ronnie” and strengthen his presidency.

Mrs. Reagan carried that charge through the rest of her days. She served as a full-time caretaker as Alzheimer’s melted away her husband’s memory.

After his death in June 2004 she dedicated herself to tending his legacy, especially at his presidential library in California, where he had served as governor.

She also championed Alzheimer’s patients, raising millions of dollars for research and breaking with fellow conservative Republicans to advocate for stem cell studies.

Her dignity and perseverance in these post-White House roles helped smooth over the public’s fickle perceptions of the former first lady.

The Reagans’ mutual devotion over 52 years of marriage was legendary. They were forever holding hands. She watched his political speeches with a look of such steady adoration it was dubbed “the gaze.”

He called her “Mommy,” and penned a lifetime of gushing love notes. She saved these letters, published them as a book, and found them a comfort when he could no longer remember her.

In announcing his Alzheimer’s diagnosis in 1994, Reagan wrote, “I only wish there was some way I could spare Nancy from this painful experience.” Ten years later, as his body lay in state in the US Capitol, Mrs. Reagan caressed and gently kissed the flag-draped casket.

As the newly arrived first lady, Mrs. Reagan raised more than $800,000 from private donors to redo the White House family quarters and to buy a $200,000 set of china bordered in red, her signature color.

She was criticized for financing these pet projects with donations from millionaires who might seek influence with the government, and for accepting gifts and loans of dresses worth thousands of dollars from top designers. Her lavish lifestyle – in the midst of a recession and with her husband’s administration cutting spending on the needy – inspired the mocking moniker “Queen Nancy.”

  • DOE’s Language Access Expansion Builds Important Bridge to City’s Public School Families

DOE’s Language Access Expansion Builds Important Bridge to City’s Public School Families

For years, advocates and community based organizations have urged the New York City Department of Education to increase the translation and interpretation services to public school parents and guardians with limited English proficiency. On Monday, I was honored to join NYC Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña, a true champion for the immigrant community to announce a series of initiatives aimed at easing language access for parents in schools.

Immigrant families face tremendous obstacles – speaking to their child’s teacher or principal should not be one of them. With nearly half of public school students – almost half a million families – speaking a language other than English at home, it is essential that these families have the ability to participate in their child’s school lives. That’s why the New York Immigration Coalition and our Education Collaborative of member organizations representing Asian, Arab, Caribbean, African, Latino, and other immigrant families, launched our “Build the Bridge” Campaign that advocated for increased translation and interpretation for immigrant parents.

And we are grateful that the DOE has stepped up and heard our calls. The DOE’s language access expansion efforts are a significant step that will help notably reduce language gaps in our schools. The expansion includes the creation of nine new full-time positions in the Borough Field Support Centers and Affinity Groups that will determine the specific needs of each school, and build the necessary supports so that parents receive quality translation and interpretation services.

The expansion also includes new direct access to over-the-phone interpreters available after 5 p.m. In the past, schools had to contact the Translation and Interpretation Unit, which then connected the call – a step that has been eliminated. This will help reduce wait time for an interpreter, and allow teachers and staff to call non-English speaking families after business hours. Interpreters are available in 200 languages. In addition, starting this month, members of the Citywide and Community Education Councils will also receive additional language support. We want our elected parent leaders to be representative of our diverse school system and want to make sure they are able to communicate among themselves no matter the language they speak.

Having the ability to communicate with parents in a language they understand and in a timely fashion is key to the DOE’s work with parents. We will continue working to ensure that immigrant students and parents are provided with culturally competent services to further strengthen this bridge to immigrant families that the DOE with help and support from advocates has built. We celebrate this groundbreaking accomplishment and thank Chancellor Fariña and the DOE for their continued efforts to improve services for immigrant families all across our City.

  • Lohan siblings score a win in $60M shopping app case

Lohan siblings score a win in $60M shopping app case

NEW YORK (TIP): Lindsay Lohan and her brother, Michael Lohan Jr. got some good news in a Manhattan court on Wednesday, November 4, despite Michael’s arrest a week ago in a separate case, says a Page Six report.

The Lohans won a round in their legal battle with Fima Potik, who sued them and another partner for $60 million, alleging the trio stole his idea for a fashion app called Spotted Friend to launch their own, Vigme. But Wednesday the parties agreed, pending sign-off from a judge, to lift a temporary restraining order against the Lohans and Chris Roth, which their lawyer, Ravi Batra, claims has kept the Lohans from working on their business for a year.

Batra told Page Six: “Fima has disobeyed three court orders to produce proof that he had a working app by June 2013, something he was never able to prove,” and he slammed Potik as a “celebrity leech” and “spoiled little wannabe trust-fund baby who wants to hang out with Lindsay and who got himself a lot of ink by suing.”

Potik had tried in September to put the legal battle on hold for financial reasons. Batra blasted the move this week, telling us Potik, “wants to say,

‘Sorry, I didn’t realize I was in court. I was window shopping at Macy’s.’ No, you were in court, and by the way, here’s the bill. This is a huge civics lesson for spoiled little rich brats.”

He said he’s moving for Potik to pay the Lohans’ legal fees.

Potik’s third attorney in the case, Bernard Daskal, said, “At this time we have no comment.”

When the case began, Michael Jr. was the rare member of the Lohan clan with no time before a judge. But last week he was arrested for allegedly using a forged New York State
“Executive Branch” placard on his car windshield. His lawyer in that matter, Mark Heller, told The Post, “I’m confident the case will be dismissed.”

Earlier this year, Lindsay did community service in New York to complete probation on a past reckless-driving case. Dad, Michael, is battling wife Kate Major after their kids were taken from them last week by the Florida Department of Children and Families. Mom Dina Lohan avoided jail time last year in a DWI case.

  • Why is the Cow a Political Animal?

Why is the Cow a Political Animal?

Vinoba  Bhave said, ” We stand on the shoulders of our ancestors so we can see much further than they saw, not be limited by their limitations.”

Chaturvedi said the most appealing explanation he found for this transition was in the thoughts of Vinoba Bhave, MK Gandhi’s spiritual successor. A Sanskrit scholar who trusted his own reading over any rhetoric, Bhave was a complex figure, an ascetic with a fine aesthetic sense; one of modern India’s least understood leaders.

“Several scholars have shown how the existing Hindu identity – or at least a significant part of it -draws from the colonial encounter. So, while some groups in India have eaten meat and beef since forever, the values of vegetarianism, non-violence and cow veneration have also been common”, says the author.

In 1979, Bhave sat on a fast, demanding a ban on cow slaughter in Kerala and West Bengal, perpetrating a political crisis for the Morarji Desai government. (In fact, the satyagraha Bhave began became India’s longest-running fast, ending only recently after the Maharashtra government banned cow slaughter in the state.) Yet, in his speeches, he made it clear that if tractors kept rolling in, people should prepare to slaughter bullocks and eat them.

Bhave’s most striking observation, Chaturvedi stressed, was his frank acknowledgement that ancient Sanskrit texts mention the eating of beef. So I pulled out my copy of Bhave’s Gita-Pravachan and found the section where he says we should not be surprised when we find out that some ancient rishis ate beef and meat was commonly eaten in India. He maintained it is a sign of evolution that such a large population accepted non-violence and turned vegetarian. Bhave said, “we stand on the shoulders of our ancestors so we can see much further than they saw, not be limited by their limitations.”

I have looked for years, and not met any cow protection activists with the courage to accept the uncomfortable truth with such courage. They tend to emphasize only their reading of the Vedas, determined to bring back the Golden Vedic Age through cow protection. Which alienates me.

My upbringing in a Hindu family has exposed me to the Gita and the Ramcharitmanas and the Bhagwat Puran, but never to the Vedas. When they need recourse to faith, most Hindus draw upon the devotional poetry of Tulsidas, Gyaneshwar, Meerabai, Raheem and scores of others; they do not chant verses from the Rigveda. In fact, ‘Vediya Dhor’ is an old term in folk culture to mock the carrier of Vedic knowledge as a beast of burden. The Vedic figure of Indra attracts little devotion, even as his nemesis Krishna is perhaps the most popular Hindu god.

A summary for those not familiar with the story from the Bhagwat Puran: the boy Krishna stops his father from making sacrificial offerings to Indra. The god of rain gets angry and sends down a seven-day-seven-night deluge, causing a flood. Krishna lifts the Govardhan hill as refuge from the flood. Indra is humiliated. The story is as much about appreciating nature and ecology over and above a tyrannical god, as it is a lesson in karma-yog, which is explained in greater detail in the Gita.

“Laws against cow slaughter will only criminalize the livestock trade, not protect the animals, said Ghotge. Only the smugglers and the law enforcement officials will benefit from the ban on cow slaughter, not the poor farmers or the livestock. Like the agriculture scientist Ramanjaneyulu, Ghotge holds that the cow protection laws are unjust; it is about powerful urban people outsourcing the burden of cow protection on the rural poor.”

I noticed even at a young age that the term ‘Hindu’ doesn’t occur in any religious text. Several scholars have shown how the existing Hindu identity – or at least a significant part of it – draws from the colonial encounter. So, while some groups in India have eaten meat and beef since forever, the values of vegetarianism, non-violence and cow veneration have also been common – and not just in one or two caste groups, either. Despite the practice of sacrificing animals coming down sharply in the past century or so, several Hindus in India and Nepal still practice the rites of Bali, most prominently during the festival of Gadhimai and at the Kamakhya temple in Assam.

This co-existence of meat-eating and vegetarianism is unique to India. How did this happen? In his Indian Food: A Historical Companion, after several pages describing meats eaten in India, Achaya explored the roots of vegetarianism and the beef taboo. He referred to the “sheer abundance and wide range of foodstuffs available even from Harappan times that could fashion vegetarian meals of high nutritional quality, and gustatory and aesthetic appeal. It is perhaps no exaggeration to say that nowhere else in the world except in India would it have even been possible to be a vegetarian in 1000 BC.”

Then I stumbled into a remarkable book: The History of Vegetarianism and Cow-Veneration in India. First published in German in 1962, its English translation appeared in 2010. The author, German Indologist Ludwig Alsdorf, had spent several years studying Jainism, and is regarded the first man to apply the historical method to the vegetarianism question. While it extensively deals with material that Jha also uses, Alsdorf’s writing is free of polemics.

Vegetarianism and cow-veneration are not directly related in history, neither was vegetarianism the basis of ahimsa (non-violence) to begin with, Alsdorf wrote. The idea of non-violence predates Jainism and Buddhism, even if it was the two movements that really made it popular in the face of Vedic sacrificial rituals. For example, it is believed that the ritual offering of coconut smeared with vermilion is a substitute for the severed head of an animal or even a human sacrificed at the altar; even Achaya refers to it. Which points to what Vinoba Bhave said about accepting our gory past.

The Buddha was against ritual sacrifice of animals, but not against consumption of meat. His instruction to his monks was that no animal should be killed to feed them; but they were allowed to eat any food they received in alms, including meat. It is widely understood that the Buddha had consumed pork before he died. Yet the origin of vegetarianism and cow-veneration may never get elucidated by available sources, Alsdorf concluded: “For the Indologist, it is indeed not a new experience that the pursuit of pressing problems in the present leads him back to the dim and distant past.”

The father of the ideology of Hindutva, Vinayak Damodar ‘Veer’ Savarkar, had a complex position on cow protection and cow worship. He saw cow protection as a symbol of compassion and humanism, but no holiness was above logic and nationalism for him. “When humanitarian interests are not served and in fact harmed by the cow and when humanism is shamed, self-defeating extreme cow protection should be rejected,” he wrote. “A substance is edible to the extent that it is beneficial to man. Attributing religious qualities to it gives it a godly status. Such a superstitious mindset destroys the nation’s intellect.”

Every now and then, an admirer of Savarkar raises the topic. “Can anyone imagine that the ‘Father of Hindutva’ advocated beef-eating (in special circumstances), rejected the divinity of the Vedas, denounced the sanctity of the caste system and launched a virulent attack on the hypocrisy of the priests?” wrote Ved Pratap Vaidik, a journalist close to several Hindutva figures. “Incidentally, Savarkar was a beef-eater,” wrote Varsha Bhonsle on Savarkar’s birth anniversary, February 26, in 1998. “For he was, above all else, a rationalist – a true Hindu – and eons ahead of contemporary Hindutvawadis.”

The cow’s holiness has long been a source of hurt and humiliation for Dalit communities.
“There is no untouchable community which has not something to do with the dead cow. Some eat her flesh, some remove the skin, some manufacture articles out of her skin and bones,” wrote BR Ambedkar, the architect of India’s Constitution, in his 1948 book The Untouchables: Who Were They And Why They Became Untouchables.

Dalit activists and scholars find the ban on cattle meat unethical and another example of caste hypocrisy. “Such laws are immoral,” said ‘Kuffir’ Naren Bedide, a thinker and social activist in Hyderabad, one of the editors behind Round Table India. He said this is about powerful castes imposing their sensibility on people who have consistently consumed beef, a source of cheap nutrition for poor people.

“Caste-Hindus say this is a matter of their religious sensitivity. What about Dalit traditions and sensitivities? Are they worth nothing?” he asked.

Why is an animal so sacred when human beings are considered so impure?

    Who needs cow protection laws?

Not the farmers who are getting rid of cows and bullocks in favor of buffaloes and tractors. So will livestock breeders benefit from it? “Such laws will harm the poorest,” said Nitya Sambamurti Ghotge, a veterinary surgeon who heads Anthra, a group in Pune that has worked with rural livestock rearers since 1992.

Giving the example of the Rajasthan government amending its cow protection laws to register cattle breeders, and track their animals through microchips, Ghotge called cow protection laws “environmentally daft”, because this will put a great burden on shrinking pastures and fodder resources. “The rich will anyway get what they want, but how will the poor farmers and animal rearers get so much fodder?” she asked. Historically, farmers and animal rearers have been able to get rid of animals in difficult times for their survival, she said; now, that will become difficult.

Laws against cow slaughter will only criminalize the livestock trade, not protect the animals, said Ghotge. Only the smugglers and the law enforcement officials will benefit from the ban on cow slaughter, not the poor farmers or the livestock. Like the agriculture scientist

Ramanjaneyulu, Ghotge holds that the cow protection laws are unjust; it is about powerful urban people outsourcing the burden of cow protection on the rural poor, she said.
