Grandeur and patriotic fervour mark the 80th Independence Day Celebrations organized by Indian Embassy in Romania and Moldova

Bucharest, Brasov, Cluj-Napoca and Chisinau (Moldova) witness a riot of Tricolor and enthusiastic crowds

BUCHAREST (TIP): The Embassy of India, Bucharest celebrated the 80th Independence Day of India with great enthusiasm, patriotic fervour and grandeur at the Embassy premises on 15th August 2026. The celebrations were attended by over 400 people, including members of the Indian community, Friends of India, Romanian nationals, students, academicians, professionals and other well-wishers of India.

Flag-Hoisting by Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra, Ambassador of India

The celebrations commenced with the singing of the National Song by a group of participants in a befitting and patriotic manner, followed by the flag-hoisting of the National Flag by Ambassador Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra. The flag-hoisting ceremony was followed by the singing of the National Anthem. The ceremony paid tribute to the sacrifices of India’s freedom fighters and commemorated the country’s remarkable journey as a sovereign, democratic and progressive nation.

Following the flag-hoisting ceremony, the Ambassador read out the Address to the Nation by the Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, and thereafter addressed the gathering, extending warm greetings on the occasion of India’s 80th Independence Day.

Vibrant Cultural Program 

A vibrant cultural programme showcasing India’s rich cultural diversity and artistic traditions was organised as part of the celebrations. Children and members of the Indian community presented patriotic songs and colourful dance performances representing different regions and traditions of India.

The performances were warmly appreciated by the audience and provided an engaging platform for the younger generation to connect with India’s cultural heritage. They also offered Romanian friends and other guests an opportunity to experience the diversity and richness of Indian performing arts.

Drawing and Quiz Competitions

The Embassy also organised Drawing and Quiz Competitions to encourage children and members of the community to engage with India’s history, culture, heritage and achievements in a creative and interactive manner.

The Drawing Competition witnessed enthusiastic participation from children, who expressed their understanding of India through vibrant and imaginative artworks depicting themes related to India’s heritage, traditions, national identity and cultural diversity.

The Quiz Competition generated considerable interest and provided participants with an opportunity to test their knowledge of India’s history, geography, culture, traditions, achievements and contemporary development.

The top three winners of both competitions were felicitated during the Independence Day celebrations in recognition of their outstanding performance and participation. 

Bharat Ko Janiye Quiz

The Embassy also promoted the “Bharat Ko Janiye (BKJ) Quiz – Independence Day Special Edition”, an interactive online initiative aimed at encouraging participants to explore India’s history, heritage, culture and achievements.

The initiative received significant interest from the Indian community and Friends of India. It particularly encouraged young participants to deepen their understanding of India’s diverse cultural traditions, historical journey and contemporary achievements.

The top four performers of the BKJ Quiz were felicitated with Certificates of Merit during the Independence Day celebrations. The initiative served as an effective outreach activity, combining learning with an engaging and competitive format and further strengthening participants’ connection with India. 

Virtual Workshop on Phad Art

As part of its cultural outreach initiatives around Independence Day, the Embassy of India, Bucharest, in coordination with the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, also organised a Virtual Workshop on Phad Art.

The workshop introduced participants to the vibrant traditional Phad painting tradition of Rajasthan, a distinctive form of Indian folk and scroll art known for its vivid colours, intricate visual storytelling and depiction of traditional narratives and legends.

Participants had the opportunity to learn about the origins, characteristics and artistic techniques associated with Phad painting through an interactive session with an Indian artist. The Embassy provided the required art materials, enabling participants to actively engage in the practical aspects of the workshop.

The workshop received an encouraging response from the Indian community, Friends of India and Romanian participants, and provided an effective platform for promoting India’s traditional art forms and rich intangible cultural heritage.

Independence Day Celebrations in Brașov 

Independence Day was also celebrated in Brașov, bringing together members of the Indian community and Romanian friends. The programme provided an opportunity to commemorate India’s 80th Independence Day and showcase India’s cultural heritage through appropriate cultural activities.

The participation of the local Indian community and Friends of India in reflected the growing cultural engagement and people-to-people connections between India and the region.

Independence Day Celebrations in Cluj-Napoca

The Indian community and Friends of India in Cluj-Napoca also came together to celebrate India’s 80th Independence Day. The celebrations provided an occasion for the community to commemorate India’s independence and celebrate India’s rich cultural heritage.

The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from members of the community and Romanian friends, further strengthening the Embassy’s outreach and engagement with communities beyond Bucharest.

Independence Day Celebrations in Chisinau, Republic of Moldova

The Embassy also facilitated Independence Day celebrations in Chisinau, Republic of Moldova, bringing together members of the Indian community, Friends of India in Moldovan.

The celebrations provided an opportunity to commemorate India’s 80th Independence Day and promote greater awareness of India’s culture, heritage and achievements among the Moldovan public. The participation of the Indian community and local friends of India further contributed to strengthening the growing India-Moldova people-to-people ties.

Community Engagement and People-to-People Ties

The Independence Day celebrations brought together members of the Indian community, Friends of India and Romanian friends in a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere. The enthusiastic participation in the cultural programme, competitions and other activities reflected the strong interest in India’s culture and heritage among both Indian and Romanian communities.

The celebrations across Bucharest, Brașov, Cluj-Napoca and Chisinau provided diverse platforms for the Indian community and Friends of India to come together and celebrate India’s Independence Day.

The programmes also highlighted the Embassy’s continued efforts to promote India’s rich cultural heritage and strengthen people-to-people relations with Romania and the Republic of Moldova. The enthusiastic participation of local communities, Romanian and Moldovan friends, students and other well-wishers demonstrated the growing interest in India’s culture, traditions and contemporary achievements.

The celebrations reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to strengthening India-Romania cultural and people-to-people relations and to providing meaningful opportunities for the Indian community and Friends of India to celebrate and connect with India’s rich heritage and its continuing journey of progress.
