  • Researchers develop blood test for diagnosing fibromyalgia

Diagnosing the chronic pain condition, fibromyalgia, could be made easier by a blood test developed by researchers in a new study. They said the test can isolate and analyse specific chemical signals in the blood that could help differentiate the condition from other rheumatic diseases and long Covid, all of which present similar symptoms. The researchers, led by The University of Texas, US, said that the blood test was a step forward in accurately diagnosing fibromyalgia and personalising treatment for patients.
The study, published in journal Biomedicines, would also open up new avenues for research into the pathology and clinical care of the chronic condition, they said. Fibromyalgia is characterised by widespread muscle pain and fatigue, sleep disturbances, and mood and cognitive changes.
“This tool is fast, accurate and non-invasive, and can easily be integrated into the clinical environment to improve the quality of life of patients with fibromyalgia,” said study author Silvia de Lamo Castellvi, a researcher from the Chemical Engineering Department of Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Spain.
For the study, the researchers collected blood samples from three different groups of people – those diagnosed with fibromyalgia, those with similar rheumatic diseases and those without any of these conditions (controls).
The samples were then “illuminated” using Raman spectroscopy, which involves using a special laser light to study how molecules in blood, such as amino acids, reacted to it. Based on these interactions, the researchers discerned differences in the chemical characteristics of the blood samples from all these groups.
The results highlighted that “chemical signatures” of amino acid molecules in blood could distinguish fibromyalgia from other diseases, they said.
The test is currently undergoing validation and could be available at health centres in about two years’ time, according to the researchers. Source: PTI

  • Those above 40 must test for glaucoma: Experts

Those above 40 must test for glaucoma: Experts

If you have a family history of glaucoma, are over 40 years of age or experiencing symptoms such as pain in the eye, pressure, headaches, or seeing rainbow-coloured halos around lights, it is essential to undergo an eye test.
Ignoring these signs may lead to irreversible peripheral vision loss associated with glaucoma.
Siddharth Agrawal, faculty at the ophthalmology department of KGMU, said glaucoma is caused by a buildup of fluid within the eye, leading to pressure that can damage the optic nerve.
He underlined the importance of regular eye checkups, especially for those above 40. He advised people to be especially vigilant if they have a family member with glaucoma, experience frequent spectacle changes, or have any discomfort in their eyes.
Another faculty SK Bhaskar, said the fluid buildup inside the eye, called aqueous humor, needs to drain properly to maintain healthy pressure.
Excessive steroid use can also contribute to eye problems. He said due to awareness, more patients are being diagnosed, and the number of glaucoma patients has grown by 10 per cent in the past five years, partly due to increased awareness and better detection methods.
However, many people mistake glaucoma for cataracts, delaying proper treatment. Unlike cataracts, glaucoma causes permanent vision loss if left untreated.
Bhaskar emphasised the importance of eye pressure and retinal tests for anyone over 40 experiencing vision problems. Early detection allows for timely treatment and helps prevent vision loss, he added. Source: IANS

  • Early morning superfoods to prevent diabetes, control blood sugar

Early morning superfoods to prevent diabetes, control blood sugar

    Bitter gourd juice
Known for its bitter taste, bitter gourd is a rich source of compounds (Charntin key bioactive compound) that can help regulate blood sugar levels. Consuming bitter gourd juice (karela juice) in the morning can enhance insulin sensitivity, reducing the risk of diabetes. Bitter gourd contains Polypeptide-p which may help improve insulin sensitivity. Vicin and lectin present in the veggie may stimulate insulin secretion from pancreas. Bitter gourd may help inhibit the activity of alpha-glucosidase, an enzyme involved in the digestion of carbohydrates. This can result in a slower absorption of glucose leading to better blood glucose control. Inclusion in the diet aligns with traditional Ayurveda practices, making it a valuable addition to combat diabetes in India.
    Soaked fenugreek seeds
Fenugreek (methi) seeds are a staple in Indian kitchens and are renowned for their anti-diabetic properties. These seeds contain soluble fibre, which aids in controlling blood sugar levels. Consuming soaked fenugreek seeds or incorporating them into morning meals can contribute to improved glycaemic control. Fenugreek may help in reducing appetite, which could be beneficial for individuals with diabetes who need to manage their weight. Some studies suggest that fenugreek may help lower total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, which is important for overall cardiovascular health, especially in individuals with diabetes who are at a higher risk of cardiovascular complications.
    Amla juice
Amla or Indian gooseberry, a powerhouse of vitamin C, is known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Regular consumption of amla can help manage diabetes by regulating blood sugar levels. Including amla juice or fresh amla in the morning routine can be a tasty and effective strategy for diabetes prevention.
    Turmeric water
Turmeric or Haldi, a spice commonly used in Indian cuisine, contains curcumin, known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Research suggests that curcumin may help lower blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity. Incorporating a pinch of turmeric in warm water or milk in the morning can be a simple yet impactful habit.
    Cinnamon tea
Cinnamon or Dalchini may aid in diabetes management by potentially improving insulin sensitivity and influencing glucose metabolism. Studies suggest its ability to lower fasting blood sugar levels and provide antioxidant benefits. Cinnamon is rich in antioxidants, which can help combat oxidative stress in the body. Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress are associated with diabetes and its complications. The anti-inflammatory properties of cinnamon may contribute to its potential benefits in diabetes management.

  • How gut health helps in improving bone density among women

How gut health helps in improving bone density among women

On this International Women’s Day, we celebrate the strength and resilience of women worldwide yet, amidst the hustle and bustle of their daily lives, women often overlook a crucial aspect of their health: the gut. Recent research has unveiled a fascinating connection between gut health and bone density, especially among women. With women at a greater risk of developing osteoporosis than men, understanding how a healthy gut can be a game-changer for women’s bone health is important.
In an interview with Zarafshan Shiraz of HT Lifestyle, Dr Debojyoti Dhar, Co-Founder and Director at Leucine Rich Bio, shared, “The gut is home to trillions of microorganisms, collectively known as the gut microbiota. This complex ecosystem plays a pivotal role in various physiological functions, including immune regulation, nutrient absorption, and even bone health. Recent studies have shed light on the intricate relationship between gut health and bone density, particularly in women. Several studies have shown that gut microbiota play an important role on bone metabolism (the intricate balance between bone formation and bone dissolution).”
Talking about Gut Dysbiosis and the role of Short-Chain Fatty Acids, she said, “Disbalance in the microbiota profile in the gut is called dysbiosis. Research has shown that dysbiosis in the gut can lead to loss of bone density. One of the key mechanisms through which the gut microbiota influences bone health is the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). SCFAs are byproducts of the fermentation of dietary fiber by gut bacteria. These compounds have been shown to enhance calcium absorption, reduce inflammation, and promote bone formation. Research indicates that higher levels of SCFAs are associated with increased bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women. This underscores the importance of maintaining a healthy gut microbiota to support optimal bone health.”
Revealing why bone density is important, Dr Debojyoti Dhar said, “BMD is a measure of the amount of minerals, such as calcium and phosphorus, present in bone tissue. Higher BMD indicates greater bone strength and density, reducing the risk of fractures and osteoporosis. Maintaining a healthy BMD is crucial for overall bone health and mobility, especially as women age and face hormonal changes that can affect bone density.”
Did you know menopause affects bone health? Dr Debojyoti Dhar informed, “Menopause is a critical period in a woman’s life when hormonal changes can significantly affect bone health. Estrogen, a hormone that declines during menopause, plays a crucial role in maintaining bone density. As estrogen levels decrease, women become more susceptible to bone loss and osteoporosis. However, emerging evidence suggests that the gut microbiota may modulate estrogen metabolism, potentially influencing bone health during menopause.”
Talking about gut microbiome profiling, she said, “Given the profound impact of gut health on bone density, knowing one’s gut microbiota offers scope for the management of bone-related issues. One way to gain insights into the composition and diversity of the gut microbiota is through gut microbiome profiling tests like BugSpeaks. These tests analyse the genetic material of gut microbes, providing valuable information about the overall health of the gut microbiota. By identifying any imbalances or deficiencies in the gut microbiota, women can take proactive steps to improve their gut health and, in turn, support their bone density. This may include dietary modifications, probiotic supplementation, and lifestyle changes that promote a healthy gut environment.”
On this Women’s Day, let’s recognise the significant impact of gut health on women’s bone density and overall well-being. By taking charge of gut health, understanding their gut microbiome through profiling and adopting gut-friendly habits, women can maintain strong bones throughout their lives. Source: HT

Sleeping for just 3 to 5 hours daily may increase Type 2 diabetes risk: Study

People who sleep for only three to five hours daily may be at a higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, according to a study. The research, published in journal JAMA Network Open, also shows that chronic sleep deprivation cannot be compensated by healthy eating alone. “I generally recommend prioritising sleep, although I understand it is not always possible, especially as a parent of four teenagers,” said Christian Benedict, associate professor at Uppsala University and lead researcher behind the study.
The team examined the link between Type 2 diabetes and sleep deprivation. Type 2 diabetes affects the body’s ability to process sugar (glucose), hindering insulin absorption and resulting in high blood sugar levels.
The researchers used data from one of the largest population databases in the world, the UK Biobank, in which nearly half a million participants from the UK have been genetically mapped and responded to questions on health and lifestyle.
They followed the participants for over 10 years and found that a sleep duration of between three and five hours was linked to a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. In contrast, healthy eating habits led to a lower risk of developing the disease, but even people who ate healthily but slept less than six hours a day were still at higher risk of Type 2 diabetes.
“Our results are the first to question whether a healthy diet can compensate for lack of sleep in terms of the risk of Type 2 diabetes. They should not cause concern, but instead be seen as a reminder that sleep plays an important role in health,” Benedict added. Source: PTI

  • Eating too much protein could harm your heart

Eating too much protein could cause heart problems, according to researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. In a study, published in Nature Metabolism, involving people, mice, and cells, consuming over 22% of daily calories from protein was linked to immune cell activation, contributing to the formation of plaque in the arteries, a condition called atherosclerosis. The amino acid leucine, found in animal products like beef and eggs, played a significant role in this molecular process.
Senior author Babak Razani warned against increasing protein intake blindly, saying it might harm arteries. He said that this study could encourage discussions about tweaking diets for better health.
“Our hope is that this research starts a conversation about ways of modifying diets in a precise manner that can influence body function at a molecular level and dampen disease risks,” he said in a statement.
The study also questioned the popular belief that more protein is always better. Based on a 10-year survey of average American diets, a lot of daily calories come from protein, mostly from meat.
This aligns with the idea that protein is crucial for health, but studies, including this one, suggest too much might not be good for long-term health. Razani and metabolism expert Bettina Mittendorfer collaborated for a deeper understanding. The study spanned different models, from cells to mice to humans. Initial experiments with healthy people guided the timeline for immune cell activation.
Simulations in mice and human cells showed that eating more than 22% of daily calories from protein can harm macrophages, cells that help clear debris, leading to plaque buildup in arteries.

  • Your smart watch isn’t a medical device – but it is tracking all your health data

Your smart watch isn’t a medical device – but it is tracking all your health data

For millions of people, smartwatches aren’t just a piece of technology. They can use them to take control of their health in ways never thought possible. As you go on your morning run, a smartwatch can monitor the rhythmic pounding of your feet and your heart’s steady beat. The watch can record the distance covered and the intensity of your workout, guiding you towards your fitness goals.
During lunch, you can use it to log calories for a BLT sandwich. As deadlines loom, they can offer gentle reminders to take a moment for yourself. And as you doze off, they might pick up instances of apnoea or other sleep disturbances.
But some users could also conflate health tips with medical advice. Device and app developers have consistently made it clear that their products cannot replace a professional medical doctor’s advice or treatment.
A smartwatch is not a medical device as defined by law. In the UK, medical devices are strictly regulated in a way that other devices such as smartwatches are not. These regulations provide users with better legal protections and clarity as well as providing for resolution in the event of a mishap.
    What qualifies
The key legal framework in the UK is the Medical Devices Regulations 2002 (UK MDR). Once a product has been identified as a medical device under UK MDR, further classification of it takes place, ranging from low risk (stethoscopes and wheelchairs) to high risk (pacemakers, heart valves, implanted cerebral simulators).
If a device is designed to go inside the body, or if it contains medicinal substances, it is more likely it is treated as high risk. Depending on the risk classification, the law then imposes stringent standards to protect users from harm. These include obligations on the manufacturers and developers to ensure their devices are safe, through conducting risk impact assessments, periodic audits and other actions.
All matters relating to medical devices in the UK fall under the responsibility of the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). The MHRA conducts surveillance of medical devices available in the UK and has the authority to make decisions regarding their marketing and distribution. It is also the MHRA’s duty to ensure that manufacturers and developers are complying with the regulations.
    Pursuit of wellness?
An important question is how one distinguishes a device, digital tool or app as one used for a medical purpose – which is how the UK MDR defines a medical device – versus one that is used for general health and wellness. The latter would include, for example, meditation apps or step counters.
Traditionally, smart watches have been treated as smart, wearable technology. On the face of it, they offer users insight into their general health and wellness, helping them make necessary lifestyle adjustments to improve their health or fitness goals. Source: PTI

  • Foods to avoid as post-workout meals

Foods to avoid as post-workout meals

Certain foods may not be ideal choices for post-workout meals due to factors such as slow digestion, high fat content, or potential to cause digestive discomfort. Continue reading as we share a list of foods you should avoid post-workout.
    Fried foods
High in unhealthy fats and can be hard to digest, slowing down the absorption of nutrients. Instead try grilled or baked lean protein sources like chicken or fish.
    Sugary cereals
Sugary cereals have high sugar content that can lead to an energy crash after an initial spike in blood sugar. Whole-grain cereal with added protein (such as Greek yogurt or milk) for sustained energy may be a better alternative.
    High-fat foods
High-fat foods slow down digestion which may cause discomfort during exercise, and fats can slow down the absorption of nutrients. Opt for moderate amounts of healthy fats, such as avocados or nuts, consumed a few hours before the workout.
    Soda or sugary drinks
These drinks have high sugar content and empty calories without providing essential nutrients. Water, coconut water, or a protein shake with water or low-fat milk are encouraged instead.
    Spicy foods
Spicy foods may cause digestive discomfort and heartburn during physical activity. Choose milder seasonings and spices for post-workout meals.
    High-fibre foods
High-fibre foods that have too much fibre can cause bloating and gas during exercise. Opt for moderate amounts of easily digestible fibre, such as from fruits or whole grains. Source: NDTV

  • Norovirus outbreak in the US: Know about the highly contagious stomach bug

Norovirus, commonly known as the stomach bug, has been spreading quickly in the northeastern parts of the United States. Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that leads to vomiting, diarrhoea, nausea, and stomach pain, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Despite often being dubbed the “stomach flu,” it’s not related to influenza.
Norovirus spreads through various means, including direct contact with an infected person, consuming contaminated food or water, and touching contaminated surfaces, followed by touching the mouth or eating without washing hands.
Symptoms of norovirus typically emerge 12 to 48 hours after exposure and include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach cramps, low-grade fever, and muscle pain.
While the illness is usually short-lived, lasting less than three days, it can be particularly severe for young children, the elderly, and individuals with a weak immune system.
The CDC emphasises the importance of thorough handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the toilet or changing diapers and before preparing or consuming food, as the cornerstone of prevention.
Alcohol-based hand sanitisers are less effective against norovirus.
Additional preventive measures include rinsing fruits and vegetables, staying home when sick, and avoiding food preparation for others until two days after symptoms have ceased.

  • Add these foods to your diet to control blood pressure naturally

Add these foods to your diet to control blood pressure naturally

When we think about trying to lower high blood pressure, we usually think of limiting salt and processed foods. But a heart-healthy diet is more than just lowering your sodium intake. The DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), which is specifically designed to help manage blood pressure, emphasizes eating many fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy, and other fiber-rich foods. Incorporating many of these foods that lower blood pressure into your diet can be a great way to facilitate a healthier lifestyle. And, there are even foods that lower blood pressure quickly so you can get started on your journey to better health.
    Low-fat or fat-free yogurt
Low-fat dairy products are a great source of calcium, which is one of the main compounds that help fight high blood pressure. Feller adds that potassium, protein, vitamins, and minerals from yogurt are great compliments to your diet as well. A 12-ounce serving of low-fat yogurt will give you about 30 percent of the recommended amount of calcium for the day.
    Bananas
Bananas are rich in potassium, with one average-sized banana packing about 420 milligrams. That’s about nine percent of the recommended daily intake. Prest notes that potassium is great for blood pressure management and research has shown diets low in potassium are associated with higher blood pressure. Bananas are also rich in fiber and lend a natural sweetness to smoothies, baked goods, and frozen treats. Peel and freeze mushy bananas when they start to go bad.
    Berries
Berries, but specifically blueberries, are packed with nitric oxide, a gas that helps increase blood flow, thus lowering blood pressure. A March 2015 study by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that even less than an ounce of blueberries a day can help significantly lower blood pressure.
    Leafy greens
Leafy greens that include kale, spinach, collard greens, arugula, Swiss chard, beet greens, and romaine lettuce are excellent sources of potassium and magnesium. These work together to regulate blood pressure, Bland says. Think outside of the salad and glorify your greens in omelets, smoothies, and sandwiches.
    Beets
Similar to blueberries, beets are high in blood pressure-reducing nitric oxide. Research has shown that drinking beetroot juice can help lower your systolic blood pressure by four to five mmHg. Try adding beetroot juice to your diet, and if you buy store-bought juice, make sure there isn’t added sugar.
