    Another Chance in Afghanistan

    India’s best bet in Afghanistan would be a negotiated withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan, for this would check the Taliban’s proclivity to engage in trouble- making outside Afghan territory.
    Donald Trump’s calling off Taliban peace talks is to India’s advantage; an outreach to the outfit could secure it.

    It is perhaps for the best that the U.S.-Taliban talks were called off earlier this month. The Taliban leadership’s proposed visit to Camp David in the United States would have led to a slew of significant geopolitical changes with implications for the region and beyond.

    Perhaps the Taliban became far too greedy and impatient, or the U.S. President has pulled out what he thinks is the Trump card to gain a negotiating advantage especially given that the American establishment is not too happy with the deal. There were misgivings about the deal that the chief U.S. negotiator to Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad, was about to ink with the Taliban.

    Back to square one

    The Taliban, having fought against and displaced the powerful coalition forces over the past 18 years, has the luxury of time on its side, even as it is steadily increasing its political legitimacy within Afghanistan. Recall that this is not the first time U.S.-Taliban talks are breaking down, and every time the Americans have had to come around to negotiating again. Mr. Donald Trump on the other hand may not have the luxury of time. As for the international community, it has grown tired of the Afghan story.

    In any case, we are back to another season of heavy fighting in Afghanistan with devastating attacks being mounted by the Taliban far more frequently than before.

    What implications does the cancellation of U.S.-Afghan talks have for the volatile South Asian region in general and for India in particular?

    Implications for Afghanistan

    The direct fallout of the American pullout from the negotiations is more bloodshed in the country. The gloves are now off (not that the Taliban was greatly restrained earlier) and the Taliban has already started carrying out major attacks with the American troops fighting back. However, the current dispensation in Afghanistan, led by President Ashraf Ghani, might not be too displeased with the outcome. The September 28 elections are likely to go ahead, and Mr. Ghani has a chance to continue as President without having to share power with the Taliban — a prospect Kabul has been uneasy about for a long time — to the extent that he actively discouraged all talks with the Taliban that did not involve Kabul. The Ghani government will also be pleased with the fact that U.S. troops are likely to continue in the country, for if left alone the government will not survive long.

    The larger question that should concern the Afghan people is whether the Taliban is a changed lot or not. The Taliban has been making direct and indirect assertations about how they are a much-evolved group on the question of girls’ education, treatment of women and minorities, among others. But these are claims at best and that is precisely why a deal with the Taliban should include commitments on its domestic behavior.

    What it means for India

    Even with a properly negotiated deal, the ascent of the Taliban in Afghanistan would have meant a certain amount of regional uncertainty and geopolitical recalibration. Pakistan, for instance, has been counting on the return of the Taliban in Afghanistan which it deeply believes gives it strategic depth vis-à-vis India. Pakistani triumphalism in the context of Afghanistan would have meant pinpricks for India. Now that there is no deal between the Taliban and the U.S., there is likely to be more violence internally within Afghanistan while the external implications would be more or less contained. This calculus might change if and when the Taliban returns to power and foreign troops withdraw.

    India’s best bet in Afghanistan would be a negotiated withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan, for this would check the Taliban’s proclivity to engage in trouble- making outside Afghan territory.

    A non-negotiated withdrawal of U.S. forces would be the worst-case scenario for India even though that is unlikely to happen. This will mean little check on the Taliban’s behavior at home and in the neighborhood. It will also enhance Pakistan’s ability to control elements of the Taliban for tactical or strategic anti-Indian uses.

    Once the Taliban returns to power in Afghanistan, on its own or as part of a power-sharing arrangement, Indian civilian assets and interests in Afghanistan could come under increased pressure. Today, with the Pakistani side up in arms against India, thanks to New Delhi’s Kashmir decision, the possibility of the Taliban going against Indian interests is much higher, if we were to assume Pakistan to be a major influence on the Taliban’s actions.

    The Kashmir question

    Kashmir in many ways will continue to be at the center of how the emerging geopolitical situation in Afghanistan will impact India. While it is true that a repeat of the late 1980s, when scores of unemployed Afghan fighters turned up in Kashmir at the behest of the Pakistani agencies, is unlikely to happen today for a number of reasons, including due to physical barriers and the amassing of Indian troops on the border, some presence of the Taliban fighters cannot be ruled out. More significantly, however, if a non-negotiated withdrawal of the U.S. forces takes place, it could lead to an open season for Taliban’s regional engagement which could potentially be influenced by Pakistan’s strategic calculations. Even if there is a deal between the U.S. and the Taliban, the fact that the Taliban will have “forced” the Americans out of Afghanistan would provide a shot in the arm to Pakistan, and young Kashmiris who are willing to take up arms against the Indian state. “If a superpower like the U.S. can be pushed out of Afghanistan by the Taliban with help from Pakistan, would it be too difficult to beat India?” is the argument doing the rounds among sections of aggrieved Kashmiri youth.

    The manner in which talks between the Taliban and the U.S., were being conducted would have led to negative consequences for New Delhi. To that extent, the breakdown of the Trump-Taliban talks is advantage India. The U.S. and the international community, while picking up the threads of negotiations in the days ahead, will need to ensure that there are enough guarantees built into a deal to disincentivize undesirable external behavior by the Taliban.

    India, on its part, needs to reach out to the Taliban, not to recognize it but to engage with it, in its own national interest. In fact, we are already pretty late in this game, and with the Chinese, Pakistanis and even the Russians converging on the importance of the return of the Taliban to the Afghan scheme of things, one wonders whether India will ever be able to make inroads into the higher echelons of the Taliban. In any case, any outreach from the Indian side would make the government in Kabul led by Mr. Ghani, unhappy. This leaves India in a difficult situation. Hence, such an outreach will also need to be carefully calibrated and discreetly executed.

    WASHINGTON(TIP): India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed delight at the news of US President Donald. J. Trump  joining the special community program, ‘Howdy Modi’, in Houston, Texas on September 22. Prime Minister said that U.S President’s participation signifies the special friendship between India and USA.

    Terming President Trump’s participation in the event as a special gesture, Prime Minister said that it highlights the strength of the India-US bilateral relationship and recognition of the contribution of the Indian community to American society and economy.

    Prime Minister Modi tweeted, “A special gesture by @POTUS, signifying the special friendship between India and USA! Delighted that President @realDonaldTrump will join the community programme in Houston on the 22nd. Looking forward to joining the Indian origin community in welcoming him at the programme.”

    “The special gesture of President @realDonaldTrump to join us in Houston highlights the strength of the relationship and recognition of the contribution of the Indian community to American society and economy.”

    On Sept 16, White House had issued a press statement confirming Donald Trump’s participation in the event. Highlighting the importance of the event, the press statement noted, “It will be a great opportunity to emphasize the strong ties between the people of the United States and India, to reaffirm the strategic partnership between the world’s oldest and largest democracies, and to discuss ways to deepen their energy and trade relationship.”

    ‘Howdy Modi – Shared Dreams, Bright Futures’ is a community summit hosted by Texas India Forum, for Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, September 22 at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. Over fifty thousand people are expected to attend the event who will get to experience “Woven: The Indian-American Story,” a 90-minute cultural program that is a celebration of Indian-Americans and their contributions to the cultural, intellectual, and social landscape of the United States.

    Presented by the Texas India Forum, Woven is a 90-minute music, dance, and multimedia show featuring close to 400 artists and community members from Texas and across the nation. There are 27 groups performing in a seamless live and multimedia experience that will showcase the diversity in the Indian-American community. Two original songs have been written for the program, which will trace the journey of Indian-American youth learning their roots to understanding how to put that together with the contemporary world.

    “A challenge that many second and third generation Indian-Americans go through is navigating the complexity of having a hyphenated identity as an Indian and an American. Woven showcases the multiplicity of Indian-American experience. Our hope is that each person sees themselves in at least one form of expression and recognizes that whatever mix of Indian and American they are, it is just right,” said Heena Patel, CEO of MELA Arts Connect and co-producer of the program.

    The show will also shine a light on unsung heroes in the Indian-American community who have undertaken selfless acts benefiting the broader American community without any need of recognition. From the classical and folk traditions passed on in basements across America to the creative exchange between Eastern and Western arts and ideas, Woven illuminates the stories of generations of Indian Americans and snapshots of home, and builds on the theme of “Shared Dreams, Bright Futures” that is the foundation of the event.

    “We really look forward to presenting this unique and interesting cultural show at the event, which will tell the story of our community in a way that’s never really been done before. We want all the attendees and those watching from home to connect with a program that shows the Indian-American community and understand what drives our community to be part of the larger American experience,” said Gitesh Desai, spokesperson for the event.

    The live audience will be the largest gathering for an invited foreign leader visiting the United States other than the Pope. The “Howdy Modi” summit has been organized with the support of more than 1,000 volunteers and 650 Texas-based Welcome Partner organizations.

    This unique event brings together the President of the world’s most influential democracy, the Prime Minister of the world’s largest democracy, and a bipartisan delegation of Governors, Members of Congress, Mayors, and other public officials.

    One wonders why Trump goes out of the conventional diplomacy and protocol to woo Modi and Indian Americans.   For Trump, the single most important goal is to get reelected in 2020. Trump will do anything to add every vote from the Indian Americans.   By demonstrating his “Close ally” relationship  and reinforcing it in front of 50,000 Indian Americans, Trump wants to advertise that he is a true friend of India .   Although the majority of Indian Americans are Democrats, Trump’s friendly gesture and support of Modi and India will definitely influence  Indian Americans.

    On Sunday, September 22, 2019, President Trump will travel to Houston, Texas to underscore the important ‘Close ally” partnership between the USA and India.  History will be made when President Trump appears with Prime Minister Modi, who will address a gathering of over 50,000 Indian Americans.

    This will be the first time, American TV networks, especially Fox Cable will cover Indian Prime Minister because of the presence of President Trump.  This is a huge benefit to Modi and India and an opportunity to communicate to all Americans.  I hope Prime Minister Modi will find it fit to speak in English to capitalize on the opportunity.

    WHAT IS THE MEANING AND IMPACT OF TRUMP-MODI AXIS?

    President Trump and Prime Minister Modi met recently in Japan.  This was followed by the G-7 meeting in France, where Modi was invited by the French President.   When Modi told Trump that he was visiting Houston to address the Indian Americans, Trump expressed interest in attending and Modi invited him.

    Modi has had several meetings ever since Trump was elected President in 2016.  So far, all their meetings were friendly and cordial. If one only observed the body language contained  in the photographs covering their rather frequent encounters, bear hugs, smiles, handshakes and hand holdings one cannot but conclude that they represent true friendship and love between the USA and India.

    WHY TRUMP WOOS INDIAN AMERICANS?

    Thus, it is now well established that the Indian Americans are  an important factor in US-India relations.  They played an important role in George W Bush giving India Civil Nuclear Deal and lifting  30-year technology sanctions.   Contrast this with Trump’s new policy of allowing India to transfer 100% of all US technologies.

    Trump and Modi will be speaking before the United Nations General Assembly next week.  It is also customary for the US President to meet with important leaders.  Therefore, Trump will be meeting Modi once again after his meeting in Houston.  For effective diplomacy and close friendship frequent meetings create opportunities.

    U.S.—CHINA RELATIONS

    President Trump has called on the American businesses to find an alternative to China.  China has violated intellectual property rights. Negotiations on trade have not been going well.  There is a tug of war with China.  One could even say there is some kind of Cold War between the US and China.

    This is a great opportunity for India to capitalize.    India has a comparative advantage over China and the USA.  India has an oversupply of professionals and skilled labor.  Indian has a never- ending supply of engineers, MBA’s, biotechnologists, and other professionals.   Modi is confronted with the problem of huge unemployment.    American economy has been lagging due to shortage of engineers and technologists. India can solve this problem of America, even as providing jobs to Indians.

    Geopolitically, India is the only country that can replace China in population and location. India is the largest English-speaking country in the world.  This is one of the reasons why there are more than 25 CEO’s of Indian origin in Fortune 500 corporations including Microsoft, Google, Fedex and others.  Apart from the CEOs, almost every major US .corporation has several Indians occupying senior management positions immediately below the CEO.

    AFGHANISTAN

    President Trump has been seeking India’s help in stabilizing Afghanistan.  India has told Trump that unless and until Pakistan withdraws its full support of Taliban, no progress could be made.  India has also convinced Trump that Pakistan must imprison the leaders of various terror organizations including LeT, JeM, JuD responsible for attacks on the city of Mumbai  and Indian Parliament.   President Trump has been pressuring Pakistan, but Pakistan so far has failed to arrest and imprison the terror leaders that the U.N. has identified.    Once Pakistan withdraws its full support to  Taliban, India should be able to help in the stability of Afghanistan.  India should be even able to send its army to help Afghanistan maintain peace and stability.

    MODERNIZATION OF INDIA

    President Trump has allowed Lockheed Martin, United Technologies, Boeing and others to start manufacturing sophisticated military hardware in India.  Such a venture could bring down the cost of production of military hardware for American and world consumption.   If Modi cooperates and creates favorable environment for foreign private investment, the Indian GDP could easily go up from under 6% now to 10 to 12%.   India cannot solve the unemployment problem without creating export-oriented industries. If India were to emulate what China did in 1979, India could easily modernize within the next 5 to 10 years.

    I feel therefore confident that Trump-Modi axis and “Close ally” relationship will blossom for the benefit of Trump-Modi axis and “Close ally” relationship between US and India will blossom for the benefit of both countries and  promote world peace and security.

    Rousing welcome awaits Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Houston

    Modi-Trump meeting , a possibility

    NEW YORK(TIP): Nine  days before the arrival of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Houston, the city seems to be witnessing an unprecedented activity, probably never ever witnessed before. It is all to give a rousing reception to Prime Minister of India who will be addressing a mammoth gathering of  50,000, a number which has already registered for the event named  Howdy, Modi’ ,  on September 22.

    The historic event in Houston is intended  to showcase the influence of Indian American community.  This will be PM Modi’s 3rd major address to the Indian American community after he became  prime minister in 2014,  and the first after his re-election in May this year.

    Modi is likely to leave New Delhi for the US on September 21 and will first travel to Houston and then to New York from September 23 to 28.

    According to reports in Indian media, while he is planning to spend five days in New York, from September 23 to 28,  plans are being explored for a day-long visit to Washington DC for a bilateral meeting with the US President at the White House.

    It is learnt that Delhi and Washington are looking at September 25 and 26 as possible dates for the visit and a bilateral meeting between the Prime Minister and the US President.

    If it works out, then this will be his third visit to the White House in the last six years and third meeting with Trump this year. Modi had last visited White House in June 2017 when he met Trump. He went to the White House in September 2014 when then US President Barack Obama had hosted him.

    In New York, PM will address the annual UNGA session on September 27. As Prime Minister, Modi had given his maiden address to world leaders at the UNGA in 2014. His visit in September and address to world leaders at the UN will be the first after winning a second term as Prime Minister.

    In a bid to implement the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres will host the 2019 Climate Action Summit on September 23 which will be addressed by Modi.

    Modi will be felicitated by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for his leadership of the Swachch Bharat Mission. He will be presented with the 2019 Global Goalkeeper Award on September 24.

    As the world commemorates Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary, Modi will also host a special event ‘Leadership Matters: Relevance of Gandhi in the Contemporary World’ on September 24 in the Economic and Social Council Chamber in the UN Headquarters.

    He will also be the keynote speaker at the Bloomberg Global Business Forum on September 25.

    Modi will also inaugurate the Gandhi Peace Garden, an innovative initiative to commemorate Gandhi’s 150 birth anniversary this year.

    Also on cards are some meetings with the Indian American community.

    India, Russia begin ‘new era’ of cooperation in Indo-Pacific region: Modi

    VLADIVOSTOK(TIP): India and Russia are beginning a new era of cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region to make it “open, free and inclusive”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday ,September 5,  amidst China flexing its military muscles in the strategic region.

    Addressing the plenary session of the 5th Eastern Economic Forum here, Prime Minister Modi said, “When ships will start plying between Vladivostok and Chennai with the opening of the maritime routes between the two cities, the Russian port city will become the springboard of northeast Asia market in India. This will further deepen the Indo-Russia partnership.”

    A Memorandum of Intent was signed on Wednesday, September 4  between India and Russia for the development of maritime communications between the ports of Chennai and Vladivostok in Russia’s Far East Region.

    “We are starting a new era of cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region,” Modi said, adding that the partnership between India and Russian in the development of the Far East will make it a “confluence of open, free and inclusive Indo-Pacific”.

    The Far East, Modi said, will become the bedrock of strong Indo-Russia ties, which is based on the principles of “rules-based order, sovereignty, respect for territorial integrity and is against engaging in the internal matters of other countries”.

    India, the US and several other world powers have been talking about the need to ensure a free, open and thriving Indo-Pacific in the backdrop of China’s rising military maneuvering in the region.

    China has been trying to expand its military presence in the Indo-Pacific, a biogeographic region comprising the Indian Ocean and the western and central Pacific Ocean, including the South China Sea.

    China claims almost all of the South China Sea. Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan have counter claims over the sea.

    Earlier in the day, Modi met his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum. Both the countries agreed to further deepen cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.

    In November last year, India, the US, Australia and Japan had given shape to the long-pending Quadrilateral coalition to develop a new strategy to keep the critical sea routes in the Indo-Pacific free of Chinese influence.

    China is engaged in hotly contested territorial disputes in the East China Sea too with Japan. Beijing has built up and militarized many of the islands and reefs it controls in the region.

    Both areas are stated to be rich in minerals, oil and other natural resources. They are also vital to global trade

    US Offers India an Opportunity to Replace China

    The Sino-USA economic and trade war has reached its climax for the worst. President Trump has ordered all American corporations doing business in China to quit and relocate to an alternate country.    While I am writing this, the news has come in that Apple is pulling out of China.

    The tug of war has been going on between the USA and China on trade and China’s currency devaluation.  It appears that Trump-Xi summitry is not working.   Trump has almost declared a cold war with China when he asked publicly that American corporations in China must quit and find an alternative location.

    INDIA MUST SEIZE THE OPPORTUNITY

    India is the only alternative and it must seize the opportunity.

    India has the human resources required.  Half of India’s population is under 25, two-thirds under 35.  India has an oversupply of labor, engineers and other professionals.

    India is the largest English-speaking country in the world, making it easier for Americans to operate in India.  IBM is the second largest private employer in India after Tatas, employing 150,000. IBM has more employees in India than in any other location including its headquarters in New York.

    India has a comparative advantage over China.

    President Trump has branded India as CLOSEST ALLY OF THE USA on a par with the U.K.   He has allowed India to transfer 100% of U.S. technologies without restriction.  China never enjoyed this advantage and they were caught stealing.

    To cite an example, President Trump has authorized Lockheed Martin to manufacture F-16, 18 planes in India.  He has also encouraged Boeing, United Technologies, Raytheon to set up manufacturing in India.  India has a huge comparative advantage over the USA in manufacturing most expensive and sophisticated military hardware.

    When the U.S. went to China in 1980, China had  nothing. Its economy was far behind that of India’s.  Dung Sha Ping was a practical ruler.  He decided to move closer to the USA.  President Reagan offered help and full cooperation if China opened its economy and created necessary environment for investment and business.

    There is no reason why India cannot liberalize and open the Indian economy to the USA.  Such a bold move will create millions of new jobs year after year for the next twenty years.  India’s GDP,  now less than 7% , could grow @10 to 12% if both countries cooperate in modernizing India.

    Prime Minister Modi must schedule a State visit for President Trump as soon as possible, preferably this year.  I am sure Trump will take with him a delegation of 100 Fortune 500 corporations. Finally, India will be able to build the required infrastructure it has been talking about for 25 years.  Modi will create an economic revolution that will create 20 million new jobs every year for the next 20 years.  Prospects and potentials for India are unlimited. It is up to Prime Minister Modi how he takes advantage of the opportunity.

    On August 15, 2019 India  celebrated  its 73rdyear of independence from Britain.   The British ruled India from 1858 to 1947.  The East India Company ruled India from 1757 to 1858.  Therefore, the East India Company and the British government together colonized and ruled India for 190 years.   Failure of Indians (mostly Hindus) to defend India against Muslim terrorism and invasion resulted in Muslim rule for approximately 300 years prior to the British rule.

    India should be thankful to the United Kingdom  for two gifts it gave to India:

    1. English language
    2. The U.K. got rid of Muslim rule of India

    Today, India is the largest English-speaking country in the world  with 400 million Indians speaking  English.  Because of this advantage,  Indians earn leadership positions overseas. There are more C.E.O.’s of Indian origin than any other national origin in the U.S.A.   Indian Americans are leaders and dominate in American colleges and universities.  To cite some examples, Harvard, Cornell, MIT, Carnegie Mellon, University of Chicago, Kellogg School of Business, Northwestern U, have selected Indian Americans as their dean.

    The Prime Minister of Ireland and the President of Portugal are of Indian origin.  The new Prime Minister of the U.K. has appointed several Indians  for important portfolios of  his cabinet. Similarly, Canada has several Indians in the cabinet including the Defense  Minister.   President Trump has appointed several Indian Americans to  important positions in the U.S. government.

    On Independence Day, we can be proud  that the Indian Americans are the highest educated and they make the highest income. Indian Americans rank No.1 in both.  Indian Americans started immigrating to the USA in big numbers only from 1965, but their leadership is outstanding in every level of American society.

    Like Americans, India should be most optimistic.  Like American dream, India should have Indian dream. India has the capability and the capacity to achieve anything it wants.   Let us not forget that once upon a time, India was the most civilized, educated and affluent country in the world.  The proof of it is in the Mohenjo Daro and Harappa civilizations we all have studied about.

    Consider the inventions and the achievements of India.

             *  India invented the Number System.   Zero was invented by Aryabhatta.

    *The place value system, the decimal system was developed in India in 100 B.C.

              * Algebra, Trigonometry and Calculus came from India.

    *The value of pi was first calculated by Budhayana, and he explained the concept of what is now known as the Pythagorean Theorem.   British scholars have officially published in 1999 that Budhayana’s works dates  back to the 6thcentury, which is long before the European mathematicians.

    • Bhaskaracharya calculated the time taken by the earth to orbit the sun hundreds of years before the astronomer Smart. Time taken by earth to orbit the sun (5thcentury)365.258756484 days

    *According to the Forbes magazine, Sanskrit is the most suitable language for computer software.

     *Navigation was born in the ancient India 6000 years ago. The word Navigation is derived from the Sanskrit word NAVGATIH.  Navy is also derived from Sanskrit word.

    *Chess (Shataranja or AshtaPada) was invented in India.  It is mentioned in the Mahabharata.

    *Sushruta is the father of surgery.  In the ancient India, he and health scientists of his time performed surgeries like cesareans, cataract, brain, urinary stones and even plastic surgery and usage of anesthesia was well known in the ancient India.  Over 125 surgical equipment were used by Sushruta.

    *Ayurveda was invented 2500 years ago

    *The world’s first university was established in Takshila in 700 B.C.  More than 10, 500 students from all over the world studied  more than 60 subjects.

    *The University of Nalanda built in the 4thcentury B.C. was one of the greatest achievements of ancient India in the field of education.

    *Kautilya wrote the first book on Arthasastra (Science of Polity).  His book was followed by Aristotle’s The Politics. It is possible Aristotle got all the ideas for his book from Chanakya (Kautilya) thru Emperor Alexander on his return from India.

    Indian Dream, like American Dream is possible because India has made  many achievements already.

    To reinforce my thesis , I am giving below comments of some of the world-renowned leaders and philosophers  on India.

    India and  Indians should be rightfully proud of their inventions.  What is more, they should be proud of what the world-renowned philosophers and scientists have recognized-  the wisdom of India.   It may be a good idea for India to advertise India’s inventions and the quotes of world philosophers at India’s international airports and the public places of India.  All students should be taught about India’s inventions.

    WHAT SHOULD BE THE “INDIAN DREAM”?    JOBS, JOBS, JOBS.

    1. Every Indian should be employed. Holding a job creates respect, dignity of labor, and of course income.  Prime Minister Modi must move the earth and the heaven to create 20 million new jobs.   Modernizing India will create millions of jobs.
    2. Every Indian should be able to own his own shelter.This requires India builds millions of apartments and houses.  This will create millions of jobs.
    3. Clean drinking water should be available 24/7 to all Indians. Creating this should create millions of jobs.
    4. Garbage must be removed and treated on a systematic basic throughout India. This should create millions of jobs.
    5. Every household must have toilets. This should be supported by modern sewerage systems to eliminate and treat waste. This will create jobs.
    6. Every village/town must have schools of learning – Elementary; High School. This will create jobs.
    7. Every village/town must have medical clinic.This will create jobs.
    8. Every village/town must have minimum facilities to play sports – cricket, soccer (football), badminton, volleyball, field hockey, swimming, etc. This is very necessary to qualify Indians for international tournaments.  India has been unable to qualify for World Cup Soccer due to lack of training and organization.   This will create jobs.
    9. India needs to build largescale factories to manufacture millions of pieces of consumer products for export to the USA and the world. India does not have to invent a new wheel.  Just emulate what China has done.  Even Vietnam is catching up fast.  India has 500 million unskilled labor looking for jobs.  The factories can absorb them by creating millions of jobs.
    • Indians living metropolitan cities must have efficient and fastest mass transit system. For example, the mass suburban railroads in Mumbai built during the British must be modernized in a hurry. This activity will also create millions of jobs in various cities of India.
    • Presently in India, there are several million qualified professionals – engineers, managers, technologists looking for jobs.India’s modernizing process will create plenty of jobs for all these professionals.

    This is not the time to criticize past administrations.  India cannot afford to miss the bus because time is of essence. Once India formulates a new bold policy to modernize India and deliver the INDIAN DREAM to every Indian, the execution will create millions of jobs year after year.  India is the youngest country in the world because half of its population is under 25, two thirds under 35.  No other country can match this great advantage India has.  India is overpopulated  with 1.2 billion.  But a developed population is a  great asset.

    By embarking aggressively on the economic  revolution to modernize India, India should be able to wipe out its poverty of 300 million living in villages.  Once they are employed, they will be an asset.

    India can raise financial resources by privatizing 150 public sector corporations, maybe to the tune of over a trillion dollars.  India’s credit is good.  Therefore, India can float 50 or even 100-year Development Bonds that could be traded 24/7 in all leading financial markets of the world.

    Prime Minister Modi has been re-elected with a huge majority. He has the extraordinary mandate to transform India into a modern nation.

    India has the potential to become the third big economic power in the short span of time , and the second big by 2035.

    The Indian Panorama team of chief editor Prof. Indrajit S Saluja and assistant editor Bidisha Roy interviewed Consul General of India Sandeep Chakravorty on August 7, 2019 to  elicit his views on certain recent developments in India and to address some issues related to the Indian American community here.

    Ambassador Chakravorty, as ever, candidly answered all our questions. We bring to readers of The Indian Panorama excerpts from the interview.

    We have decreased the turnaround time of our consular services. For instance, you apply for passport through CKGS today. It comes to us this evening. Tomorrow we do it and day after tomorrow you get it. So our turnaround time is just a day. Which means if somebody is in an emergency, we can give him the passport across the counter.

    TIP: We are here with you when India has lost one of her best human beings and an accomplished politician who, until a few months ago,  was India’s external affairs Minister, and your boss. I will like to begin with your memories of Sushma Swaraj Ji, and, of course, your condolences .

    CG :  We know politicians, we know leaders, ministers but Sushmaji was very special in the sense that she led our ministry (External Affairs) for five long years and she really had a very intimate relationship with all officer and staff. I think she changed our ministry. She changed the way our consulates work. She made us responsive to the community. On many issues, she played very very important role in keeping our embassy in forefront of diplomacy. She used the power of Twitter to help people. It is unparallel in the diplomatic history. No leader, no foreign minister used social media so effectively. There is an outpouring of grief. In New York she used to come every year for the General Assembly and we got the chance to meet her. I remember she would call me personally and ask me to help people in stress and trouble including patients in hospitals here in the United States. She connected beautifully to everybody. Everybody is missing her. We are poorer by her absence. She was a tall leader. We don’t have many women at the forefront of politics. She was the youngest minister at the central government. She has been in politics for 40 years. She was the face of Indian diplomacy. I think we will all miss her. My condolences to her family.

    TIP: Modi government has taken some decisions on the State of Jammu &  Kashmir which have divested the State of certain privileges and taken away some special rights of the people of J &K. Obviously, the decisions have altered the character of relationship between the State of J& K and the Center. How will you explain the action which you have called in your note circulated to media, including the NY Times, as “administrative action”? How does abrogation of Article 370 help people of J&K?

    CG – Before I get into answering it,  I would like to recall the last tweet of Sushmaji which she made just an hour before her cardiac arrest. She thanked Prime Minister Modi and said I could never imagine that I will see this day I was waiting for. I think it’s a very telling comment, poignant tweet. I’ve seen the tweet a number of times and I think it was a historic day. I would like to highlight two points. One is that – I believe that Article 370 was a temporary provision in our constitution, and it was made to protect the people of Kashmir to work for its development and protect their culture and uniqueness of Kashmir. Unfortunately,  because of several developments, it went to the contrary. It has not developed Kashmir. There is no institution, no hospital, no university, no medical college, no engineering college, no industry, no business.

    What will happen in next few years that Kashmir will become a developed state, a global state. It will become the pride of India. I got a comment from one company – they said, we’ll work with India to bring Kashmir to the forefront of technological change in the world. The people of Kashmir are as Indian as anybody else. Why they have been deprived for so many years of these benefits of development? No law of India was applicable to Kashmir including reservations for the backward classes. There was rampant corruption. Even the prevention of corruption act was not applicable. It was a jarring point in our political structure which has been corrected and I am so happy that our government has the courage to do so. The culture of Kashmir will be demolished – that’s not true. India is based on linguistic states and India celebrates its culture and diversity. More and more Kashmiri culture will come to the forefront. There have been forces who tried to kill the culture of Kashmir. This action will protect the culture of Kashmir. I am very very positive that this is a landmark decision and it will be a game changer. It will solve the problems that we have faced in the past. It will bring out the people of Kashmir to a high level of economic development.

    TIP: There are fears that when you open up the forbidden area to people to buy land, the land mafia will dispossess  the local people who are known to be poor. And that will drive them to greater poverty. What do you think?

    CG- I don’t think that is a correct description of the fact. It is a very hypothetical situation. It has not happened elsewhere. Nobody will force you to sell your land. Things will not happen overnight. If somebody has land and wants to build a hotel, why he should be denied? The land of Kashmir should have similar valuation like in Mumbai or Delhi. Tourism will prosper and protection will be given like in other parts of India. The beginning has to be made.

    TIP: Let me take you to your August 2017 interview with The Indian Panorama. You had said : There are three relationships here – India-US relationship, Indian community-US relationship, and Indian community-India relationship. All are very important, and we need to focus on all three. How do you assess yourself today with regard to your work in strengthening these relationships?

    Thank you for reminding me. It was a very useful framework to analyze our work. The India-US relationship has progressed enormously in  the last two years. The best indicator is the trade which has crossed 142 billion. It was less than 20 billion 20 years back. What is very interesting is trade deficit has been reducing. US export to India is growing. We believe in comparative advantages.  We are buying thing from US which we have never done before such as oil and gas. We are also increasing our defense purchases from the US. US is the biggest supplier of aircraft to India. On economic relations, the investment relationship is very strong. Indian companies are investing here. Strong presence of them in our jurisdiction. The US-India relationship has done well. It is prospering. Our Prime Minister and US leaders have said that this is the most important bilateral relationship in the world. It is the relationship of the future. There is great deal of understanding about the role of India. As the relationship advances it creates opportunities for us.

    As far as the Indian community-US relationship is concerned, that is also very significant. More and more Indians are participating in the political process. Indian origin men and women are participating in the local level across the US as assemblyman, councilman or judges or senators. That awareness is growing and people are talking about it. There is appreciation of role of Indian community in the US administration. Our community is the most educated and prosperous community and they are playing huge role in the development of United States. Today US is the technological powerhouse because of the contribution of people of Indian origin.

    Thirdly, the connection with India is growing. The concern which I have is whether the second or third generation is connected or not. As India is becoming economic powerhouse, the interest in India should be natural. The second or third generation should not connect to India because their parents belong to India. They should connect because they feel to do so just like other Americans do. That is happening. I find lot of people who deal with India, are investing in India. Our job is to facilitate that. I see my role as a bee, a pollinator – pollinating the flower. In diplomacy we don’t do business. Our role is to facilitate business. Here at the consulate, so many subsidiary relationships are blooming. I believe in supporting these contacts and relationships.

    TIP: Between 2017 and 2019, you have accomplished a lot. Also, you may probably have a feeling that much more could have been done. Do you have any flop side?

    CG- I think after two years, I am focusing on involving more and more mainstream Americans in the activities of the consulate. I have done, but I have to do more. My emphasis now will be trying to do more of that. I am trying to do things that will last. I am sitting on the success and hard work done by my predecessors.  We also increased our outreach. The feedback is very positive. We fail in many occasions but it’s not because of lack of effort. We failed because everything is not in our control. When we get feedback, we respond. We try to correct problems of people. We respond on google, Facebook, twitter, Instagram. We have developed our web Application – Pramit. It is an in- house development. It has ensured 100% response to any applicant who has any issue with the consulate. it is widely used. In the last 7 months about 10,000 people used it. We have redone our website in June 2018, we had 1.3 million hits since then. For a consulate, it’s very very satisfying.

    TIP: You inherited one particular initiative from Mr Mulay – Consulate at your doorstep – what have you done to promote that?

    CG- We have decreased the turnaround time of our consular services. For instance, you apply for passport through CKGS today. It comes to us this evening. Tomorrow we do it and day after tomorrow you get it. So our turnaround time is just a day. Which means if somebody is in an emergency, we can give him the passport across the counter. This has not happened before. Our turnaround time for visas is also one day. I am proud to say that we are one of the very few consulates globally who open on weekends to give emergency services. For transfer of mortal remains, we are open on Saturday and Sunday. I think hardly anybody does that. We give emergency visas and passport if anybody is critically ill. A proper procedure is established. The consulate is for the people. If we are not able to satisfy and help them, there is no point. Consulate at your doorstep is happening but because we have brought down the processing time, the demand has decreased. But still we are doing it in places like Boston and Philadelphia. Our jurisdiction is very compact.

    TIP: It is about Open House and redressal of grievances. Do you maintain a record of complaints received?

    CG – We do. We are very sensitive regarding this. If an appreciation makes my day, a complaint ruins my week. That is the importance we give to complaints. We respond to each and every complaint. Some of the complaints come because of our limitations when we say ‘No.’ We can’t say yes in every circumstance.  When we say ‘No’ people respond in a negative way. We understand their difficulties and we try to be as humane as possible. Most of the complaints are because of lack of response. Because of Pramit, the complaints have also drastically reduced. It’s a mixed bag and I take both in my stride. Our phone calls are now on recorder. We receive 120 to 130 calls a day and every call is recorded. I make sure by the end of the day we respond. We call and leave a message and I guarantee you that we’ll get back within 24 hours.

    TIP: What have been the most recurrent complaints and grievances?

    CG – Mainly two. One is for passport of people who are not documented here and asylum seekers who have not got US travel document. Sometimes they need to travel to India. There is a very flexible rule and we are compassionate. But sometimes people take benefit of the rule and then don’t travel to India. They say, somebody is unwell. So we give them the passport and then they don’t go. But that number is not large. One thing to notice that passport is not an identity document but a travel document. Some undocumented people who demand the passport they do not travel. They want identity. When we ask what the purpose is, they are unable to explain. We don’t want to jeopardize the US immigration system.

    TIP:Congratulations for providing certain new facilities to visitors to the Consulate to transact business. We visited the office in the basement area and found the place much more welcoming than before. The comfortable new chairs and the ambience of the place are surely welcome. Bidisha who spoke with the Consul Passport and Visa Mr. Murugesan was told about the entire operation-how a visitor has to register on arrival and  then wait in the queue. The new digital queue monitoring and display makes things much easier for visitors. Bidisha also noted that the Consulate has provided free copying and computer services to fill in the forms. Mr. Murugesan also informed about the plans  to have a children’s section. Surely, there are enough indications of improvement.

    CG: We constantly review the services.

     TIP: What are your plans regarding the celebration of 550 years of Guru Nanak Devji and 150 years of Mahatma Gandhi?

    CG – In last several months we have arranged many events on 550 birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Devji. We have had many outstanding events at the consulate.  The latest one was at the Gurudwara at Hicksville. We are planning few more events. We have proposals from other Gurudwaras in our jurisdiction. We are planning with Mayor’s office in Norwalk, Connecticut where there is a sizable Sikh community to host an event in November on of Guru Nanak Devji’s birthday. We are planning to host it at mayor’s office with participation of mainstream people.

    In connection with the year long commemorative celebration of 150 birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, we have partnered with  the State University of New York, Old Westbury (SUNY-OW),  and Shanti Fund to plant 150 trees in the Old Westbury Campus. We are requesting individuals to adopt trees. The Gandhi Peace Garden will be inaugurated in September during the visit of Prime Minister who will do it. On October 1 we are doing ‘Homage to Mahatma’ music concert by Sitarist Subhendu Rao and his wife at the consulate.

    TIP: We are a week away from celebrating India’s 73rd Independence Day. Your message , please.

    CG – On the occasion of our 73 rd Independence Day, I greet the readers of Indian Panorama and the larger  Indian American Community and the friends of India. I believe that India’s time is now. India is on the way to becoming five trillion dollar economy and that cannot happen without greater India-US cooperation and involvement of Indian American community.     A Note of Caution for India’s Future

    I live and work in USA where everything is not perfect. There are people around us whose actions may lead to undermine others’ achievements and accomplishments. Progressive thoughts and ideas may not be supported by prosperity, that is the United States. However, I always feel that a common American person live within a framework where he or she indulges in daily activities in order to not only survive but also to pursue his/her happiness. A feeling of value-based society prevails around us. So whatever we do carries a purpose and meaning.  There is a visible consequence of not working. Few are passionate about what they are doing. People may be working just to earn their living. And that situation is not conducive for making a great society. However, the nation goes on with rules and guidelines applicable to all. India, on its part, has a long way to go before it successfully constructs an acceptable framework for its citizen to work, to live and pursue personal happiness.

    In today’s interconnected society I am constantly made aware of things happenings around the world. Considering what goes on the Western media on a daily basis I can say, from the Western point of view, that India is not an important question. India is important for those who claim India as their mother land. India is important for the generation whose roots lie in India. To that end we like to see a prosper India. People of Indian origin feel the pain of Indian brothers and sisters when they suffer from natural disasters and government apathy towards age old social problems.

    India has been enjoying consistent economic growth for the past two decades. Many experts have gone to the extent of saying that Indian will overtake China in the near future in terms of growth. For this reason the world has been very supportive to the issues India has been embroiled in the recent past. However, the support to India by the international community, especially the West, has not been without any expectations. The developed nations look at India as a  prospective buyer, a growing market for its products. India, on its part, opened its economy for products from the rest of the world. During the current decade its people put their trust to a promising leader like Narendra Modi, hoping that he would make India a better place to live for its teeming billions.

    How far the expectations of India’s middle class as well as its poor have been met by Modi? It is a big question. It may be early to answer this question. However, one can see that India’s financial health hasn’t been dealt wisely in the past few years. But hope is not yet lost for the simple fact that India has prospered to its current state not just by the government policies but by its enterprising and resilient population. One hopes that the ruling  Bharatiya Janata Party is genuinely eager to solve the social and economic challenges. We have some mixed feelings about the actions of the ruling party of India led by Narendra Modi. Some important matters must be finished before his report card is prepared.

    The ruling party of India, Bharatiya Janata Party, must not behave as if its fortune will stay for ever. Sine 2014 Prime Minister Modi has been busy launching campaigns for social change. We all know about impacts of ‘Swatchch Bharat’, ‘Ujjawala’ and ‘Beti Bachao’, ‘Insurance for farmers’ campaigns that didn’t go too far. Modi government is yet to create employment for the millions of unemployed youth. If the situation of unemployment and poverty in India remains unchanged no force on the earth can save it from mass unrest.

    Recently Modi government used its strength of popular mandate to demolish Article 370 of the Indian constitution. The Western media projected this move as  the seize of Kashmiri people. The neighboring country used every tactic to destabilize the region. India is fortunate to be enjoying the support of Western world as well as many wealthy Arab nations on Kashmir issue. Because of this reason I don’t see any difficulty for the Modi government working towards normalization of Kashmir. While Delhi has demonstrated high skills of administration after the abrogation of Article 370,  many BJP officials stand exposed with their small mindset. They continue to behave as if India has conquered a new territory. It is the time to stand polite and help the common people of Kashmir who might be in financial distress.  It is not the time to worry about Pakistan. India must focus on the welfare of the whole of Jammu and Kashmir region. We are not aware how much India was spending on upkeep of security forces in Kashmir. The financial cost of securing the Kashmir region must be very high. Should this money had been spent for the development of the region? Absolutely.

    Happy India Independence Day to all. We are very grateful to our leaders and pay tribute to and remember all the freedom fighters who contributed a lot and fought for the Independence of India. They have given us free India and today we are in our 73rd year of freedom and it is great pride for us.

    Today we play an important role in all important international affairs around the world. Indians are leading the world in every field. In fact, since the day of independence to this day, we have developed significantly in every sphere of life.

    We should be making every effort to make our motherland India and adapt homeland America powerful and honorable in the world.  Let’s unite, let’s work hard and tell our every friends and foes alike. We are friends with friends and when times come, we can roar.

    This Independence Day is very special because of  Government of India has scrapped the Article 370 from J&K, through a Presidential order on 5th August 2019 and Indian flag will be hosting in Kashmir and its liberation of Kashmir in true manner. Humanity at heart, Humanity in spirit!

     People of Jammu and Kashmir will benefit from abrogation of Article 370

    We congratulate Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Shah for taking this bold step. It was long due, but it took the courage and vision of Prime Minister Modi to remove this unjust provision of the Indian constitution,” said Jagdish Sewhani, president of American India Public Affairs Committee.

    Undoing the seven-decades old wrong would not put India on fast track of development. “People of Jammu and Kashmir would be the first beneficiary of the economic development that the region would not experience,” he said adding that several Indian Americans are ready to invest in the tourism and other sectors of Jammu and Kashmir and Laddakh.

    New York-based Sewhani said Indian Americans are planning to felicitate Prime Minister Modi when he comes here to attend the annual session of the UN General Assembly in September.

    I Laud Prime Minister Modi for the bold action

    I laud Modi for utmost secrecy.  Nobody knew. It was a pleasant surprise to India and the world blinked.

    I am glad officially Jammu and Kashmir including Ladakh/Aksai Chin are now fully integrated with India. I did not like the Special Status (370).   India has expended unlimited resources in Kashmir but the Kashmiris have not been accountable encouraging maximum corruption.  It is a disgrace that India was careless all these years

    Kashmir can be the Switzerland of Asia.  I am in favor of freedom for investors to invest in Kashmir.  All these 72 years, non-Kashmiris were not allowed to buy properties or invest.

    On Tuesday, that is today, the Lok Sabha will steamroll the new bill and status of Kashmir.

    Utterances of Chidambaram and Tharoor were irrelevant and insignificant.  So far there is no reaction from the US and the Western world. Even China has kept mum. Pakistan bribed China by ceding a part of its occupied Azad Kashmir. Pakistan is shocked that it is isolated.  So far there is peace. Modi seems to have done his homework and sent additional 35,000 forces.

    Pakistan will try to schedule a meeting of the Security Council.  India must use its diplomacy to prevent this. If Pak succeeds, India should send the most competent representative to argue.  India can count on Soviet veto. Pakistan China veto. It may be in the interest of the US not to have a meeting.  The US still has no official ambassador, I think.

    In any case, Modi has neutralized the Khan-Trump White House meeting.  India has denied what Trump said on mediation.  In Washington which diplomacy will succeed — India or Pakistan?

    Trump, I think will be careful because Trump has the largest foreign investment in India.

     Don’t let your communal politics make you communal in your responses

    Modi and Shah scraped the article 370 of the constitution giving exclusive rights to the state of Kashmir, and it was the need of that day when Pakistan attacked Kashmir, and it chose to seek the protection of India. The law was passed to protect their rights until a referendum was organized to let the people decide what they want to do.

    In a democracy, the states have the rights, and the federal institution cannot bully them into obedience against their will. If you break the law once, you break it again, and in the end, it is dangerous to all. Kashmir is no different than Gujarat (when Modi was CM) Tamil Nadu or Bengal in going against the federal government.

    I am reading comments across the board- and have this to say to my friends in India. Don’t let your bias towards anyone make you unjust, and you would become an ugly person if you are unfair. If you stick to justice for all, you cannot go wrong. All the problems we have in society are due to injustice.

    Learn to talk about the people of India based on the individual’s rights and not on communal lines. Don’t let your communal politics make you communal in your responses.

    Protests will begin unless Modi acts like evil China’s repressive regime in Tiananmen Square. Thank God, 66% of Indians are still civil and democratic and respect the constitution and the rule of law.

    I always think of women in India – Men invariably beat them, treat them as inferior, and force them to remain silent. Finally, I am glad women spoke up and are restoring sense if justice among men.  Thanks to our founding fathers for respectfully accepting the protests without crushing them like the British did it in Jalianwala Bagh.

    All because our founding fathers honored their God-given right to protest. If women were prevented from speaking up, they would have continued to live in oppression by men. No people on the earth should be denied their right to protest. Without protest, democracy dies, and in the end, all of us will lose our freedoms.

    Those who oppose protestors tend to be oppressors themselves and insecure. Civilized people can deal with conflicts through dialogue; animals resolve their disputes by forcing others to through brut power.

    Congressman Tom Suozzi’s anti-India letter angers Indian Americans

    Community demands retraction of the letter and apology

    NEW YORK(TIP): The strong Indian American community in New York on August 11 reacted angrily to a letter Congressman Tom Suozzi wrote to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, alleging  India’s  highhanded in Kashmir , and that the human rights of Kashmiris were being violated.

    The moment the letter surfaced on August 11, the word spread like wildfire  in communities across the Tri-states area of NY, NJ,  CT that a Congressman who the Indian community has been supporting during the last more than two decades has turned against India.

    Some Indian American friends of the Congressman spoke with Tom Suozzi and suggested that he give an explanation and apologize to community which has always helped  in his campaigns and made it possible for him to move on the political ladder.

    The Congressman Tom Suozzi  met with the Indian American community Aug 11 at Apna Ghar in Hicksville to explain his letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo which was viewed by Indian American community as anti-India.

    The furious community leaders demanded that the Congressman retract the letter and apologize.

    However, the Congressman rejected the demand of Indian American community that he retract the letter. He defended his  writing the letter to Pompeo commenting on the situation in Kashmir consequent upon abrogation of Article 370.

    He said he was approached by some of his constituents who said they were not able to contact their families in Kashmir valley, as all communication links were snapped. He said his letter was prompted to know US administration’s view on the situation . He regretted his quoting a New York Times report which spoke of Indian highhandedness in Kashmir. His explanation did not satisfy the gathered Indian American community. Some said they will have nothing to do with Tom. Some others said the meeting was fixed by those who were out to defend Tom.

    Later, when the Congressman went to Queens to participate in an India Day parade, he had to face the ire of the Indian American community. When he was confronted by some, including the Indian National Overseas Congress General Secretary Rajinder Dischpally, he walked away from the parade.

    Later, on August 12, the congressman,  issued the following statement to explain his position.

    “On Sunday, I met with 100 of my Indian-American constituents regarding my recent letter to Secretary Pompeo expressing my concerns about recent developments in Kashmir. Based upon my meeting it is clear that it was a mistake to not consult with some of my Indian American friends and supporters before I sent the letter. I should have. I am sorry. If I had met with them before sending the letter, I would have framed my concerns differently.

    “ Throughout my career in public service, I have been an ardent supporter of India, their sovereignty, and have always stood with them in their fight against terrorism. The US-India relationship will be one of our most important over the next 50 years and beyond. I have spent my time in Congress promoting and elevating this relationship and will continue to do so.

    “India, the world’s largest democracy, remains critical for regional security and peace. The current situation in Kashmir presents some very serious challenges. The United States should seek to be helpful in securing safety and peace for all people.

    “Moving forward, I will make sure to solicit the input of all of my constituents who have a vested interest in Kashmir and work towards a peaceful region that roots out terrorism and corruption as well as respects human rights. It is my hope, that recent developments in the region will eventually lead to this.”

    However, the Indian American community is not satisfied with the explanation. Several community leaders The Indian Panorama spoke with want the Congressman to withdraw the letter written to Secretary of State, write another letter placing the facts that no human rights violation is being done in Kashmir which has not witnessed any violence since August 5 when Article 370 was abrogated by the President of India, and that he apologize to India and the Indian American community for having levelled malicious allegations against  India and the Indian government.

    The Indian Panorama office was flooded with calls by people who demanded strong action against the Congressman which included demonstrations in front of his office in New York and in Washington, his boycott, and complaining against him to Democratic and India caucus.

    The Congressman has surely created an ugly situation with hid thoughtless action for which he alone is responsible. It surely is not in his interest to antagonize a whole community which has been supportive of him always.

    40,000 people register for ‘Howdy, Modi’ community summit in Houston

    HOUSTON(TIP): Around 40,000 people have registered themselves for Indian American community summit “Howdy, Modi!” here, which will be addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 22 during his visit to the US for the UN General Assembly session, organizers of the event said.

    “Howdy”, short for ‘How do you do?’, is a friendly greeting commonly used in southwestern United States.

    Attendance to the summit is free, but passes have to be obtained which is now open for public, said the host Texas India Forum, a Houston-based non-profit body, which expects around 50,000 people to attend the prime minister’s address to the Indian diaspora at the sprawling NRG football stadium in the U.S.’ fourth most populous city.

    Houston, which has one of the largest concentrations of over 5,00,000 Indian American community in the U.S., is the energy capital of the world. Energy security is a priority area for the prime minister.

    Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said, “I look forward to welcoming PM Modi to Houston, home to one of the biggest and most vibrant Indian communities in the U.S.”

    ‘Visit will strengthen ties’

    “This historic visit will strengthen the already robust bonds between Houston and India on trade, culture and tourism — all of which benefit every Houstonian.”

    Over 39,000 people have signed up in the first two weeks. There are more than 1,000 volunteers and 650 Welcome Partner organizations for the event, the Texas India Forum said.

    According to convener of the organizing committee Jugal Malani, before the prime minister’s address, the event, with the tagline ‘Shared Dreams, Bright Futures’, will include a cultural program that puts a spotlight on Indian-American contributions to the United States.

    “We want the entire city of Houston to come enjoy the festivities and learn about Indian-Texan relations,” he said.

    This will be Mr. Modi’s third major address to the Indian American community after he became the prime minister in 2014 and the first after his re-election in May.

    The previous two were at the Madison Square Garden in New York in 2014 and the Silicon Valley in 2016. Both the events were attended by more than 20,000 people.

    U.S. Senator John Cornyn said, “On behalf of the hundreds of thousands of Indian-Americans in Texas, and as co-chair of the Senate India Caucus, I welcome Prime Minister Modi to Houston.”

    “India continues to be a key security and economic partner of the United States, and I look forward to seeing that relationship strengthen with his visit to Texas,” he said.

    A number group of organizations from a wide spectrum of the Indian diaspora in the United States has mobilized support for the “Howdy, Modi!” event.

    Sanjay Ramabhadran, the president of the Texas Lyceum said, “The future of Texas is inextricably tied to global trade and strategic relations. As a Texas-wide leadership group focused on civil discourse on the important policy issues facing our state, we recognize that this visit will be a giant step in further strengthening Texas- India relations on numerous fronts.”

    According to WISER Trade, the US Census Bureau, and the Foreign Trade Division, in 2019 (year to date), India is Houston’s fourth largest trading partner just behind Brazil, China and Mexico.

    Texas lawmakers have passed several measures protecting the rights of gun holders. From protecting licensed gun holders during natural disasters to raising the number of armed school marshals allowed on school campuses, Texas lawmakers have passed several measures protecting the rights of gun holders.

    Those licensed to carry firearms will soon be able do so in places of worship, such as a synagogue or a church.

    Legislators also created laws prohibiting residential or commercial property owners from restricting possession of firearms by residents or their guests.

Launch of Chandrayaan-2 was originally scheduled for 14 July 2019 at 21:21 UTC (15 July 2019 2:51 IST) but was called off due to a technical snag noticed while filling the cryogenic engine of the rocket with helium. Developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation(ISRO), the mission was launched from the second launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centreon 22 July 2019 at 2.43 PM IST (09:13 UTC) to the Moon.

    Chandrayaan 2 Indian lunar mission will boldly go where no country has ever gone before — the Moon’s south polar region. Through this effort, the aim is to improve our understanding of the Moon — discoveries that will benefit India and humanity as a whole. These insights and experiences aim at a paradigm shift in how lunar expeditions are approached for years to come — propelling further voyages into the farthest frontiers.

    Chandrayaan 2 is:

    • 1stspace mission to conduct a soft landing on the Moon’s south polar region
    • 1stIndian expedition to attempt a soft landing on the lunar surface with home-grown technology
    • 1stIndian mission to explore the lunar terrain with home-grown technology

    A successful landing would make India 4thcountry ever to soft land on the lunar surface after the space agencies of the USSR, US and China

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Team ISRO for the successful launch of Chandrayaan-2.

    ISRO Chairman Dr K Sivan congratulated the launch vehicle and satellite teams involved in this challenging mission. “Today is a historical day for Space Science and Technology in India. I am extremely happy to announce that GSLV MkIII-M1 successfully injected Chandrayaan-2 into an orbit of 6000 Km more than the intended orbit and is better.”

    “Today is the beginning of the historical journey of India towards Moon and to land at a place near south pole to carry out scientific experiments to explore the unexplored. On July 15, 2019 ISRO intelligently observed a technical snag, Team ISRO worked out, fixed and corrected the snag within 24 hours. For the next one and a half day, the required tests were conducted to ensure that corrections made were proper and in right direction. Today ISRO bounced back with flying colours.” Dr. Sivan said.

    The Moon is the closest cosmic body at which space discovery can be attempted and documented. It is also a promising test bed to demonstrate technologies required for deep-space missions. Chandrayaan 2 attempts to foster a new age of discovery, increase our understanding of space, stimulate the advancement of technology, promote global alliances, and inspire a future generation of explorers and scientists.

    Moon provides the best linkage to Earth’s early history. It offers an undisturbed historical record of the inner Solar system environment. Though there are a few mature models, the origin of Moon still needs further explanations. Extensive mapping of lunar surface to study variations in lunar surface composition is essential to trace back the origin and evolution of the Moon. Evidence for water molecules discovered by Chandrayaan-1, requires further studies on the extent of water molecule distribution on the surface, below the surface and in the tenuous lunar exosphere to address the origin of water on Moon.

    The lunar South Pole is especially interesting because of the lunar surface area here that remains in shadow is much larger than that at the North Pole. There is a possibility of the presence of water in permanently shadowed areas around it. In addition, South Pole region has craters that are cold traps and contain a fossil record of the early Solar System.

    Chandrayaan-2 will attempt to soft land the lander -Vikram and rover- Pragyan in a high plain between two craters, Manzinus C and Simpelius N, at a latitude of about 70° south. Chandrayaan-2 is India’s second mission to the moon. It comprises a fully indigenous Orbiter, Lander (Vikram) and Rover (Pragyan). The Rover Pragyan is housed inside Vikram lander.

    Former Prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayeeannounced the Chandrayaanproject on course in his Independence Day speech on 15 August 2008. The mission was a major boost to India’s space program. The idea of an Indian scientific mission to the Moon was first mooted in 1999 during a meeting of the Indian Academy of Sciences. The Astronautical Society of India (AeSI) carried forward the idea in 2000. Soon after, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) set up the National Lunar Mission Task Force, which concluded that ISRO has the technical expertise to carry out an Indian mission to the Moon. In April 2003 over 100 eminent Indian scientists in the fields of planetary and space sciences, Earth sciences,physics, chemistry, astronomy, astrophysics and engineering and communication sciences discussed and approved the Task Force recommendation to launch an Indian probe to the Moon. Six months later, in November, the Indian government gave the nod for the mission.

The mission included a lunar orbiter and an impactor.India launched the spacecraft using a PSLV-XLrocket, serial number C11, on 22 October 2008 The mission was a major boost to India’s space program,as India researched and developed its own technology in order to explore the Moon. The vehicle was inserted into lunar orbit on 8 November 2008.

     AUDRA MCDONALD, Tony (six-time), Grammy (two-time), and Emmy Award Winner and MICHAEL SHANNON Academy (two-time) Award Nominee star in the new Broadway production of Four-Time Tony Award Winner TERRENCE McNALLY’s “FRANKIE AND JOHNNY IN THE CLAIR DE LUNE.” The Play is directed by Obie Award winner ARIN ARBUS making her Broadway debut.

    This new Broadway production of the play celebrates the artistic achievements of playwright Terrence McNally, recipient of the 2019 Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre, whose career spans six decades, director Arin Arbus in her Broadway debut, and stars Audra McDonald and Michael Shannon in their first collaboration.

    The play is produced by Tom Kirdahy, Debbie Bisno and Hunter Arnold.  It is playing at the Broadhurst Theatre, 235 West 44th Street, on Broadway.

    “Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune” runs until Sunday, July 28, 2019.

    Originally produced more than 30 years ago Off-Broadway, “Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune” is one of McNally’s most acclaimed plays and has now appeared on Broadway as the playwright celebrated his 80th birthday.  The play was a runaway hit from 1987 to 1989, returned to Broadway in a highly praised production in 2002 and was also turned into a feature film.

    Audra McDonald and Michael Shannon two of the most acclaimed actors of their generation, bring new life to the bruised dreamers of Terrence McNally’s timely and timeless romance. Director Arin Arbus directs this portrait of two lonely souls: a waitress and a short order cook who meet for a one-night-stand—but discover a connection deeper than they ever expected. Over a night filled with intimate thoughts and outlandish coincidences, meatloaf sandwiches and moonlit dreams, piano suites and the sweetest talk, they realize that making love is easy—falling in love is hard.

    Aside from Claude Debussy’s “Clair de Lune” music, we are treated to excerpts from Bach, Scriabin, Shostakovich and Wagner.

     Terrence McNally, born November 3, 1938 at St. Petersburg, Florida, U.S.A, is an American playwright, librettist(writer of books for musicals), and screenwriter.  He grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas.  His career spans six decades. His works explore human relationships—frequently those of gay men—and are typically characterized by dark humor.

    His parents, both from New York, liked Broadway shows and took him with them on occasional trips to New York, where Terrence saw his first musicals at age eight.

    McNally knew from childhood that he was gay, started college at Columbia University before turning seventeen, and began his literary career early. He wrote and copy-edited for his high school newspaper. It was a high school English teacher who encouraged him to become a writer, and he never forgot her.

    After graduation from Columbia in 1960, McNally worked as a newspaper reporter, became a tutor for the teenage sons of the American novelist John Steinbeckwhile the family traveled the world during the last days of ocean liners, and worked as a stage manager at The Actors Studio.

    In 1965, he had his first Broadway play produced (and his first flop), “And Things That Go Bump in the Night,” which featured an openly gay character. Undaunted, he proceeded to write a string of progressively more successful plays and musicals in an amazingly prolific career that’s well into its sixth decade.

    His three dozen plays included “Bad Habits” (produced 1971), “The Ritz” (originally produced as “The Tubs,” 1973; film 1976), and “Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune” (produced 1987; film 1991) “The Lisbon Traviata” (1989). In 1995 McNally won a Tony Awardfor best play, for “Love! Valour! Compassion!” (film 1997), and “Master Class” (1995) one of several works he wrote aboutopera. Among his later plays were Deuce, which opened on Broadwayin 2007, and “Golden Age,” which followed in 2012.

    In his play “Mothers and Sons” (2014), McNally examined a mother coming to terms with her late son’s homosexuality and with society’s evolving understanding of what constitutesa family. “Fire and Air” (2018) is about the “Ballets Russes”and founder Serge Diaghilev’s relationship with “Vaslav Nijinsky.”

    The dozen musicals for which McNally wrote the libretto include “Kiss of the Spider Woman” (1992) and “Ragtime” (1996). His corpus of work also includes several opera librettos and movie screenplays.

    McNally’s librettos for “Kiss of the Spider Woman” and “Ragtime” won him Tony Awardsin 1993 and 1998, respectively. Additional credits as a librettist included “The Full Monty” (produced 2000), “Catch Me if You Can” (produced 2011), and “The Visit” (produced 2001). He earned an additional Tony nomination for a 2015 revival of the latter musical.In 2019, he received a Tony for lifetime achievement.

    As part of the many events in New York City to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, Pride and Resistance of the LGBTQ Community, PBS aired the new documentary: American Masters – “Terrence McNally: Every Act of Life.” The series premiered nationwide on June 14 on PBS, pbs.org/americanmasters and the PBS Video app in honor of LGBT Pride Month.

    “Every Act of Life” lifts the curtain on the life, career and inspirations of the complicated and brilliant Emmy-and-four-time Tony Award-winning McNally, explores past productions of Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune and features original interviews with Terrence McNally and Audra McDonald.

    In the documentary, McNally speaks plainly about his relationships with his lovers, beginning with Edward Albee, who was writing “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” when they met, and moving on to a serious romantic affair with the late playwright Wendy Wasserstein. He is married to theater producer Tom Kirdahy.

    Having survived grueling treatment for lung cancer, McNally is currently working on three plays. How fortunate for him, and for us, that he disregarded Steinbeck’s heartfelt suggestion: “Don’t become a playwright. It’ll break your heart.”

    McNally’s brother Peter is interviewed in depth in the film and offers thoughtful words about their childhood. The many show biz talking heads, including Audra McDonald, F. Murray Abraham, Christine Baranski, Tyne Daly, Nathan Lane, and Billy Porter, all have fascinating stories to tell. “Every Act of Life” is available as a DVD.

    The Actors Studiowhere McNally worked as a stage manager, is the prestigious professional actors’ workshop in New York Citywhose members have been among the most influential performers in American theatre and film since World War II.  It was founded in New York City in 1947 by directors Cheryl Crawford, Elia Kazan, and Robert Lewis. It is one of the leading centers for the Stanislavsky methodof dramatic training.

    NEW YORK(TIP): In its first five years, the Modi government has done the foundational work for India’s targeted growth, and now it’s time to focus on accelerate the growth – which must be led by private sector, says Dr. Rajiv Kumar, Vice-Chairman, NITI Aayog.

    Addressing a gathering at the ‘India Investment Seminar’ organized by the Indian Consulate at New York, July 17,  Dr. Rajiv Kumar spoke on India’s Investment scenario and economic reforms and interacted with New York’s Investment Community.

    In his welcome note, Consul General Ambassador Sandeep Chakravorty gave a brief summary of accomplishments of Dr Kumar who took over as Vice Chairman NITI Aayog in the rank and status of a Cabinet Minister, on 1 September 2017.

    Highlighting the reform measures introduced in the recent budget, Dr Kumar said that there are more than a dozen provisions in the budget to encourage the private sector to lead India’s growth and it’s time to make space for them and give the private sectormore incentive.

     “The intention and the sharp focus of the Modi government is very clear and it is that private enterprise must be given the space, the incentives to play its role in the economy. The government has no intention at all to try and be the main driver of growth in the country because it is not possible,” he said. “The next five years, India is going to be at the cusp of a major transformation and if we succeed, as this government is wanting to, you will see a decade plus more of sustained high growth which will be undertaken with inclusion but also with sustainability,” he further added.

    Dr Kumar acknowledged that there is still space for bolder reforms like changing the mindset. Noting that agriculture needs corporate investment, as there have hardly been any investments in that sector, but for that structural reforms are essential, he pointed out. Focus is also being given for major transformation in the mining, oil and natural gas sectors, electric mobility sectors, textile and leather, as well as ‘sunshine’ industry like tourism, he added.

    During a Q&A session, answering a question by Prof Indrajit S Saluja, Chief Editor of The Indian Panorama about water scarcity in different states, Dr Kumar said the water index, introduced by NITI Aayog, has raised the alarm. He said the problem and its solution both are associated with agriculture. At the moment about 90 percent of the water is consumed by agriculture, he said. The agriculture has to be more water efficient and if there is a shift to horticulture, water could be freed up for other uses, he suggested.

     Later, in a brief interview with The Indian Panorama, Dr Kumar answered a few questions from Chief Editor Prof Indrajit S Saluja.

    1. As in charge of policy planning in India, what would be your top priority? I am not talking about the government, what would be your top priority?

    Ans. My top priority would be two – one is agricultural transformation and I stick by that. The other one is to eliminate mal nourishment. Our children and our women – 38% of our children are mal nourished – it’s a shame. Fifteen percent of our women are anemic.  If we can’t change that, we are not going anywhere at all. And the third would be water. If I can solve these three, I would die as a satisfied person. I just headed a committee called the North East Water Management Authority. They did a very good job; we have to implement that. It would solve the Brahmaputra problem at least.

       2. When it comes to human beings, what kind of quality of life do you think you would be able to provide for people of India under your supervisory capacity as chief planner of India?

    Ans. I am not a planner. I gave up planning. I am just a thinker. Our problem is much bigger than quality of life. You know if I can tackle,  get people sufficient amount of potable good water and a clean environment, if I can get them quality education and health – that in the five years I am not promising. But the beginning is being made. Those are the areas we want to work on. For that (We need) domestic private investment. FDI contributes no more than 3 to 4 percent in our total investment. We have to depend on domestic investment and domestic investors.

    Happy Birthday America!

    Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

    Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

    But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate — we cannot consecrate — we cannot hallow — this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us — that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion — that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain — that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.—     Abraham Lincoln, November 19, 1863

    To truly celebrate America, one has to know who we are, where we came from, where we are now, where we are going, and that well-intentioned Communism and its light-weight sibling, Socialism, are wholly inconsistent with American Exceptionalism. And then there is the many “I”s coming together to be “We”: E Pluribus Unum.

    Time has come for all of us to better comprehend who and what we are, after all “the voice” of the “Silent Majority, albeit, pretty loud on its own, has its loudspeaker in our POTUS – President Trump –  who is incessantly causing – by Tweet and act –  an “American Spring” cleaning (with results akin to “Arab Spring” a la conservatism) – and our institutions are waking up to be lawful & robust – as if anew. I fear that some Americans don’t really understand America, ignore as they do history’s nuanced journey and impossibly impose present-day mores on yesteryears, and many well-meaning folks who took “compassion” to heart, are violating laws in a nation of laws. So, a look back is wise, as it’s timely.

    Celebrating the Declaration of Independence on July 4 is an American tradition, but it took a while for that tradition to develop.

    “We the People” are the beginning “words” of American Exceptionalism’s second of two  founding documents – our hallowed Constitution. Of course, the Declaration Of Independence, written by my hero Thomas Jefferson, created the “right” to do so. The Constitution has it’s embedded Separated Powers regime – structural separation, to force an ad hoc joinder – thereby squeezing more public good from power by discord. America is at her best when we are divided on policy, but united as a nation. America First, then, is a predicate to legitimate argument.

    One-half of us love Donald J. Trump and one-half of us can’t get rid of him fast enough. That’s our America since 2016 – even without foreign meddling – especially President Putin’s return “gift” to Hillary for her meddling in his prior re-election; and Putin won despite her. Hillary lost by cheating Bernie Sanders of a “fair fight,” and got the wrath of his ardent supporters and Trump’s supporters voting in lockstep to elect “The Donald,” to be president of these United States of America.

    Magna Carta. While “Richard the Lionhearted” was off in the Middle East fighting the Crusades, the Barons got King John to limit the King’s unlimited sovereign rights, thereby sharing some of the King’s sovereign powers with the hordes of landed gentry. This was a seismic event diluting the power of Kings. Independently of the Normans, a prior Saxon, Thomas Becket, as Archbishop of Canterbury, succeeded in imposing, with his death, “Separation of Church & State.” This is embodied in our Bill of Rights.

    American Exceptionalism

    Fast forward several centuries to 1776 – 3 years after the American Revolution started in Boston with the Indian Tea “bopping” in its harbor during the “Boston Tea Party.” Well, “We the People” were all landed gentry, and excluded ordinary everyday people, such as indentured servants. Of course, it excluded slaves – our Original Sin – our fellow Americans were “3/5″ of a person.

    Fast forward once again – and it took the Civil War and a Republican Yankee President Abraham Lincoln to remove the Constitutional soulful damnation of the 3/5th of a person, aka our Original Sin, and “We the people” was now “wholesome”: 1 for 1, for each and every one of us, landed gentry or not, counted! Gettysburg Address is the everlasting test of legitimacy of our government and our leaders, as only if it helps “the people,” are they legitimate.

    But what ails us is that we – and almost all of us grew up after WWII – and saw the great American Middle class as a permanent feature, rather than the unintended consequence of the GI Bill: free education for the returning victorious GIs. Well, the GI Bill ran out, and with it the Great American Middle Class. Congress, are you listening?

    During Reagan’s time we were the greatest creditor nation in the comity of nations. Sadly, today, the world’s greatest debtor nation. Every president between Reagan and Obama is responsible for this debacle. Enter Donald Trump – an errant candidate for president running to run, not win. That’s why he had as much fun as he did. But he connected to lots of people who wanted to say “Merry Christmas,” or “I want White Power in a White-majority country” or “when I order coffee or a burger, I want to hear English, not Spanish or some other language, like Hindi. Remember Charlottesville. All those who came to America, was because we loved what America was and wanted to live and blossom here. We did not come to change her, even as we have the duty of citizenship to protect her from enemies foreign and domestic. Immigrants come to embroider America, not conquer her.

    “MAGA” became a battle-cry – that I embraced as a Democrat, who honors Senator John McCain as an American Hero – because I had been issuing a warning since Bill Clinton days in the 1990’s,  as I saw the American Dream in the Intensive Care Unit, and objected to Indian Call Centers – as they took away jobs from single or divorced American mothers whose main skill was speaking and connecting well to their neighbors.  Well, my warnings were ignored on the altar of profit, until Trump harnessed the anger, and unexpectedly mined it all the way to the presidency.

    No Conspiracy; Obstruction; and Senate Refusing to Convict

    Watching the events in real time, I was repeatedly struck by most of Trump’s lawyers being carnival-worthy – leaving aside criminal-fixer Michael Cohen. Had candidate-Trump and POTUS had real lawyers, he would not need “loyalty oath” from then-FBI Director Jim Comey. He would know he can’t be guilty of “conspiracy” without an express or a tacit in-line-Of-sight “nod & a wink”; which were not present, even if fantasied.  No need to bash Jeff Sessions’ proper Recusal, no need to dangle pardons, and surely no need to fire Mueller. Indeed, cooperating with Mueller was the path to disinfectant sunshine and proven patriotism. Same cooperation was good for Russia – indeed, I so requested publicly. Instead, obstruction of justice – interfering in legal process is obstruction – now haunts. Given our almost evenly divided nation, the Senate will not convict. Wacky result of legal malpractice of the highest order, damning a presidency that otherwise has disrupted the world to get more for America. Yes – improve our balance sheet – even as Trump engages with our “enemies” head-on. DPRK’s Chairman Kim is an example. Europe paying more for NATO, another. Pacific Fleet  renamed Indo-Pacific, China finally challenged to be “fair” – as they have been unfairly ripping us off since 1971, and engaging with Russia’s Vladimir Putin – not like Barack’s secretive “hot mike” – “I will have greater flexibility after the election,” but in broad daylight being friendly and jovial, while in private tough and sanctioning.

    The state of our union is very strong, and reflected in many facets. Of singular importance is our military’s condition – and it is awash in cash, being rebuilt and expanded, including a Space Force. One can almost see “Star Trek” as NASA’s next project; I hope they find Captain Kirk and Spock. As for our “Ballot Box,” the core keeper of our sovereignty, we need to make it hack-proof, and social media Meddling-Free. Congress are you listening?

    Our 2020 presidential sweepstakes are on, and socialism or communism – like in the 1920’s and 1930’s – is trying to make a comeback – even as the USSR, and now Russia have abandoned both! Let me state, what to me is obvious: No Democrat running can win and become POTUS – even after Bob Mueller’s Testimony – if s/he embraces socialism or communism. Oh, to my 2016-favorite Joe Biden, knock it off with the dead-on-arrival “apology tour.” If it had been me, as then chair of Senate Judiciary, I’d be proud of giving Anita Hill the witness seat – as that was the maximum power of Judiciary Chairman. Biden was not her lawyer, not her judge, and the Senate wasn’t a trial. Meekness is not deliberative; appeasement is not a policy; and Americans can’t stand a wuss! Even Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, now a legal force to reckon with in New York, no one can ever accuse of being a “wuss.” Worth remembering for all candidates: President Trump is a New Yorker, and a As Frank Sinatra said: If you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere.

    At the heart of the American Dream is the Declaration’s merit-based  “pursuit of happiness” – not guaranteed being happy like everyone else – as in communism or it’s lighter sibling, socialism. The “pursuit of happiness” was intended as an eternal journey for each future generation to undertake, not as a “dead-end” destination as Communism and Socialism cause. Dead ends are inconsistent with American Exceptionalism.

    Dreamers protest

    We have the greatest nation in human history – we call “home.” We need to make our friends and family love and honor America. We need to treat America as our home: windows open, and door closed. Only those we want to come in, are allowed in. Compassion is a “safety valve” that ought to be used sparingly when the “law” becomes “an ass”. DACA is an example.  Congress, are you listening?
