Two men arrested in US on terrorism charges

SACRAMENTO (TIP): US authorities said on Thursday that two people have been arrested on terrorism-related charges in California and Texas, including a refugee from Iraq who is charged with lying to federal investigators about his travels to Syria. A criminal complaint unsealed on January 7 accused Aws Mohammed Younis Al-Jayab, 23, of traveling to Syria to fight alongside terrorist organizations and lying to investigators about it.

The complaint said Al-Jayab, a Palestinian born in Iraq who came to the United States as an Iraqi refugee in October 2012, communicated on social media about his intent to return to Syria to fight for terrorist organizations, discussing his previous experience fighting against the regime in Syria. When he was interviewed by citizenship officials, he lied about his travels and ties, the complaint alleges. Ben Galloway of the federal defender’s office is the suspect’s attorney. He did not immediately return telephone and emailed messages Thursday. The US Attorney’s Office in Sacramento said Al-Jayab was arrested on Thursday morning in Sacramento. Meanwhile, the governor and lieutenant governor of Texas praised the arrest in Houston of what Lt Gov Dan Patrick called a terror suspect.

“Based on the facts, as we know them, today’s action may have prevented a catastrophic terror related event in the making and saved countless lives,” Patrick said in a statement. Federal officials in Houston did not immediately provide more details. Federal officials say a separate arrest in Milwaukee that grew out of the Sacramento investigation is not related to national security.

December in US was hottest in modern times

MIAMI (TIP): The United States just experienced the hottest December in modern times, and 2015 as a whole was the second warmest on record, US government scientists said on Thursday.

The report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is the latest to document a warming trend that many scientists expect will make 2015 the planet’s most scorching year in modern times.

Global climate data for 2015 is to be released on January 20.

For the United States alone, December 2015 was “record warm for the contiguous US, with a temperature of 38.6 Fahrenheit, six degrees above the 20th century average,” NOAA said in a statement. Temperatures soared past the last record-breaking December, which was in 1939.

“It was quite an exceptional month,” said Jake Crouch, climate scientist at NOAA’s National Centres for Environmental Information. December 2015 marked the first time in 121 years “that a month has been both the wettest and the warmest on record,” he added.

The average temperature for the entire year in the United States was the second warmest since record-keeping began in 1880. “Only 2012 was warmer for the US,” NOAA said, noting that last year marked the 19th consecutive year the annual average temperature exceeded the 20th century average.

According to Crouch, four states experienced their hottest years on record, including Florida. No state was unusually cool. “Every state had an above average temperature for the year,” said Crouch.

The NOAA report also said there were 10 weather and climate disaster events that caused losses above $1 billion each.

  • INDIA IMPROVES ties with neighbors

    INDIA IMPROVES ties with neighbors

Building upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative of inviting all SAARC leaders to his swearing-in ceremony in May 2014, the neighbourhood continued to be the primary focus of India’s foreign policy in 2015. While relations with Pakistan and Nepal remained on a tricky path, there was some forward movement in the ties with Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Bhutan, Maldives and Myanmar. Relations between India and Sri Lanka more or less maintained a status quo.

    Nepal

It began with an upswing in the ties but the relationship were strained by the time the year came to an end. Bilateral ties with Nepal took a hit after the neighbouring country promulgated a new Constitution. India argued that the new Constitution did not take into account the concerns of all sections of the population, particularly the Madhesis who enjoy close ties with India. However, Nepal did not pay heed to India’s protests and rebuked it for interfering in the country’s internal affairs.

Earlier when Nepal was hit by a massive earthquake on April 25, India responded to the calamity and helped Nepal by launching its largest disaster response abroad, Operation Maitri. During External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj’s visit to Kathmandu in June, India pledged $1 billion grant for the reconstruction of the quake-hit country.

    Pakistan

File image of Narendra Modi with Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif
File image of Narendra Modi with Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif

Ties with Pakistan did not see any forward movement in the past one year despite two meetings between Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif. While pushing for better relations, India has maintained that talks are possible only in an atmosphere that is free of terror and violence.

Sharif and Modi first met on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Ufa in Russia. The two sides unveiled a five-point agenda to address concerns on terrorism and to promote people-to-people contact. Despite a number of hurdles including on account of terror attacks in the aftermath of Ufa, and cancellation of initial round of NSA-level talks, a significant breakthrough was achieved in December with the NSAs meeting in Bangkok, followed by Swaraj’s visit to Islamabad for the Heart of Asia Conference.

    Bangladesh

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina shake hands in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Saturday, June 6, 2015.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina shake hands in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Saturday, June 6, 2015.

Modi’s visit to Bangladesh in June saw the exchange of instruments of ratification of the landmark land boundary agreement. It was a relief for over 50,000 people living in 162 enclaves across both countries as India and Bangladesh swapped enclaves, bringing to an end the 68-year-old boundary dispute. The June 6-7 visit of PM Modi also saw India-Bangladesh developmental cooperation scaling new heights, with India pledging a $2 billion Line of Credit for Bangladesh. The two countries took a host of steps to enhance trade and connectivity, including the launch of two new bus services. The two countries are a part of the sub-regional cooperation between Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal to enhance connectivity and regional integration.

    Sri Lanka

Not much change taken place in the ties between India and Sri Lanka in the year gone by. Within months of the newly-elected Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena taking charge of the island nation, two-way visits were held by the leaders and foreign ministers of the two countries. During Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka in March, India pledged $318 million Line of Credit for railway upgradation (New Delhi’s development assistance is already about $1.6 billion), unveiled a currency swap agreement of US $1.5 billion to help stabilise the Sri Lankan rupee and to develop Trincomalee as a regional petroleum hub with the cooperation of Lanka IOC (Indian Oil Corp’s subsidiary in Sri Lanka) and Ceylon Petroleum Corporation.

Both countries also signed four pacts regarding visa exemption for official passport holders, youth exchanges, customs agreement (to address trade concerns and reduce non-tariff barriers) and the construction of the Rabindranath Tagore auditorium at the Ruhuna University with India’s aid.

    Afghanistan

Amid the backdrop of the unfolding transition in Afghanistan, India sustained its engagement with the war-torn country. During the visit of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani in April 2015, India reiterated its commitment to the reconstruction of the strife-torn country. The two sides focused on working towards a more liberalised business visa regime. Afghanistan welcomed India’s decision to extend the 1000 scholarships per year scheme by another 5 years as part of capacity building initiatives. India continues its assistance to the construction of the India-Afghanistan Friendship (Salma) Dam in Herat, expected to be completed in the first half of 2016. The Parliament Building in Kabul constructed with Indian assistance has already been completed as well as on the Doshi and Charikar power stations. But the resurgence of Taliban and Pakistan’s continued support to the group remain a huge hindrance. Taliban has regained control of large swathes of land in Afghanistan in the last few months and is now in a position to threaten the elected government once again.

    Bhutan

India’s all-weather friendship with Bhutan continued on an upward curve. The visit of Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay to India in January focused on optimising cooperation in the field of hydropower – the centerpiece of economic cooperation between the two countries. The two sides reiterated their commitment to the 10,000 MW initiative and in this context, to the early implementation of the four JV-model projects, totaling 2120 MW.

    Maldives

India also engaged with the Maldives leadership despite political volatility in the island country. This was reflected in the meeting between the foreign ministers of India and the Maldives on the sidelines of the UN summit in New York in September. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj followed it up with a visit to the island nation from October 10-11 to reinvigorate ties.

    Myanmar

Bilateral relations with Myanmar improved with the first India-Myanmar Joint Consultative Commission (JCC) meeting held in New Delhi on July 16, 2015. Steps were taken to further enhance the existing air connectivity, extending a$500 million Line of Credit to the Government of Myanmar for development priorities, and a commitment to enhance the regional and sub-regional cooperation under the BCIM-EC and the BIMSTEC framework. India also played an instrumental role in providing disaster relief support to Myanmar in response to widespread floods and landslides caused by Cyclone Komen.

  • PRIME MINISTER MODI’S VISITS ABROAD

    PRIME MINISTER MODI’S VISITS ABROAD

One of the most  talked about subjects in India has been the foreign visits of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi  who  visited  35 odd countries in  about two years. Not that other Prime Ministers  did not go on foreign tours. What  was remarkable in the case of Modi has been the quick succession in which he went abroad, as if at the drop of the hat.  Also,  public reception to him by the Indian community abroad  was a distinguishing feature of his visits abroad.

    Russia – December

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on a two-day visit to Russia on Dec 23 for annual summit talks with President Vladimir Putin. India was looking at deeper engagement in Russia’s oil and coal sector besides stepping up cooperation in some other areas like diamond trade and agro-business. India is also likely to push for a Free Trade Agreement with the Eurasian Economic Zone and is sharing details of a study it conducted in this regard.

    Singapore – November

PM Modi addressed the Indian diaspora there on a two-day visit to Singapore. He said the government is laying thrust in generating power from clean and renewable sources like solar, nuclear, wind and biomass with the target of 175 gigawatts, and in turn, reduce dependence on coal.

    Malaysia – November

    United Kingdom – November

PM Modi struck 27 deals in 3 days during his UK visit. From technology transfer in defence to going after the Lashkar-e-Toiba, from cyber security to tackling online child pornography – a new joint statement on defence and security has emerged as a major takeaway from the meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his British counterpart David Cameron.

    United States – September

PM addressed a summit on the agenda of Sustainable Developmental Goals at UN. He also attended a summit on peacekeeping forces hosted by Barack Obama. UAE – August

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United Arab Emirates has scored big on three fronts – terror, trade and outreach to the blue-collared Indian expatriate community. While substance was evident in these three counts, his symbolic outreach to Muslims – in his maiden visit to an Islamic country – by visiting the Sheikh Zayed mosque and praising the inherent tenets of Islam was music to many.

    Central Asia – July

Modi was the first Indian PM to visit the five Central Asian nations in one trip. The focus during the trip will be on enhancing trade, cooperation in energy and security. PM visited Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Russia and Turkmenistan.

    Russia – July

Prime Minister Narendra Modi travelled to Russia to participate in the 7th BRICS summit and SCO summit in Ufa in a bid to give an impetus to strategic, economic and energy ties.

    Bangladesh – June

As India extended a $2 billion Line of Credit (LoC) to Bangladesh to develop its infrastructure and signed 22 agreements, Prime Minister Narendra Modi almost took a leaf out of former PM Manmohan Singh’s book to address Dhaka’s concerns on Teesta and trade imbalance. On the issue of trade imbalance, Modi said he was “conscious” of the huge trade imbalance and will do everything India can to bridge the deficit.

    China – May

Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked China to take advantage of the “winds of change” in India with a much more transparent, responsive and stable regulatory regime even as leading firms from the two sides signed deals worth USD 22 billion.

Narendra Modi, the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Mongolia, held wide-ranging talks with his counterpart Chimed Saikhanbileg here following which the two sides inked 14 agreements covering defence, cyber security, agriculture, renewable energy and health sector.

    South Korea – May

India and South Korea seven agreements, including on avoidance of double taxation and formalising consultations between National Security Councils of the two nations, to boost bilateral ties.

    France – April

India asked France to supply 36 Rafale fighter jets in “fly-away” condition “as quickly as possible”. This is under a government-to-government deal, unlike the tender currently being negotiated by the Ministry of Defence with Dassault, Rafale’s manufacturer.

    Germany – April

PM Modi and Angela Merkel spoke in favour of a free trade agreement between the European Union and India. PM Modi said that this was important for the expansion of India as a manufacturing hub. The joint statement by both countries recognized the establishment of a working group on urban development. The two countries said stronger educational exchanges will be encouraged along with collaborations between universities.

    Canada – April

Modi became the first PM to arrive in Canada in a stand-alone bilateral visit in 42 years.

Both countries signed an agreement for long-term supply of Uranium to India. Harper and Modi agreed to increase collaboration in the fields of energy efficiency, oil and gas development and renewable energy.

Seychelles, Mauritius, Sri Lanka – March

PM Modi’s visit to the three island countries was against the backdrop of China’s increasing focus on the Indian Ocean region. Modi renewed India’s commitment to the ocean economies where India envisages its role as a net security provider. Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka was the first standalone Prime Ministerial visit to the island nation since 1987.

  • I expect a hate-free world

    I expect a hate-free world

The religions that talk of division should be banned. Religion who cause terror should be banned and People that talk about killing others based on religion should be isolated and send to remote island. All books in circulation teaching hate and killing must be burned to save the humanity and different races. People who have converted to a culture of hate and division while living in one nation but appreciate another nation’s laws and rules should not get voting rights and Government help to make sure for the safety of majority.

Government should take care of the majority interest rather than minority appeasements.

Any person who lives in one nation and hate nation’s constitution is not fit to live in that  land. World peace is possible when one human will consider another human life as precious as his or her.

    Expectations in the New Year

I expect to serve this world around me. Buddha said compassionate mind is the most powerful mind. It is very strange we all live in a fearful world of our own. Most of the time there is no rhyme or reason for that fear but we do. The fear we created by our self. Limits we have created by our self. In 2016 I want to be a person who have no fear, no limits, who can express himself. I believe that the most important person for you is yourself and you have right to be happy. I expect to be happy in this year. I always work on a principle of “Do No Harm” and i want to continue to practice that in my personal life and my medical pain practice. Words are the most powerful weapons and the most powerful blessings depending on how used. They simply can destroy your existence or can make you a God based on how they are used.

Pain is suffering!! It affects every aspects of person’s life. It not only affects that person suffering but also people around them. Often time’s patient is shy about talking about their pain as it makes them feel inferior or disabled. Physical pain leads to psychological pain also and then the pain becomes chronic.

2016 I expect to make amazing changes in me and my practice so i could reach out to everybody who is suffering with pain and provide them with the Best Available treatment based on their conditions. I expect to give them an awesome quality of life so they can “Stop Suffering!! Start Living!!”

    Followed by drinking and dancing,
Till the clubs close the door!

In 2016, I truly wish for a peaceful and harmonious world where our common humanity is  more celebrated rather than focusing on our differences. I  hope and pray that our community  could work together  in unity in the  political arena here and exercise our rights and privileges in a more assertive way than ever before. Both political parties, Democrats and Republicans, tend to treat the Asian Indian community like an ATM machine while displaying no loyalty or lasting commitment to  our needs or aspirations! They may have concluded that we are merely excited and privileged with the so-called photo sessions. A united south Asian Community with a thoughtful plan of action will go a long way in claiming a piece of the pie here in New York that is rightfully ours considering our presence and contributions. It is time that we balance the celebration of the cultural heritage with timely interventions and actions to help our younger generation to succeed in a more competitive environment here in USA.

One last thing: Let us all remain true and consistent to the principles of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness for every human being on the planet. Let us raise our voices against injustices everywhere whether it is an assault on a visiting grand father from Gujarat by a policeman in Alabama or lynching a minority member in Dadri, U.P for his dietary habits or burning alive of Dalit Children in Faridabad, U.P or setting ablaze of Churches of a minority community in New Delhi. In 2016 | Expecting to combat Type-1 Diabetes (used to be called juvenile Diabetes)

Type -1 diabetes is the second most common chronic disease in children in India. There are one million children with diabetes in India.(may be more)

One author called them “step children”. Twelve thousand children die each year because of diabetes. They don’t need to.

The real cause of Type-1 diabetes is elusive, but we do have few theories:

    1. Genetic susceptibility.
    2. Autoimmunity
    3. Environmental trigger
    4. Entero viruses

Hence the research for the cause of type-1 diabetes is of paramount importance.

In spite of the efforts of many organizations, the management of these children is less than satisfactory.

In 2016, The Eye Foundation of America would like to work with the local organizations in India to promote awareness; supplying insulin to the deserving poor families and prepare the children to lead a normal productive life. Preparedness is a lifestyle: EFA would like to collaborate with the organizations in India( in 2016) and make it an ongoing program.

Gun Lobby Cannot Hold America ‘Hostage’, says Obama

WASHINGTON  (TIP): Wiping his tears as he remembered first grader children killed in  a mass shooting, at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Newton, CT , an emotionally charged President Barack Obama on Tuesday, January 5 ordered stricter gun control rules that he could  impose without Congress and urged American voters to reject pro-gun candidates. Obama made it clear that he does not expect gun laws to change during his remaining year in office, but pledged to do what he can to make gun control a theme in the months leading up to the November elections to replace him.

In a powerful address in the White House, surrounded by family members of people killed in shootings, Obama’s voice rose to a yell as he said the constitutional rights of Americans to bear arms needed to be balanced by the right to worship, gather peacefully and live their lives.

Obama has often said his toughest time in office was grappling with the December 2012 massacre of 20 children and six adults at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

“Every time I think about those kids, it gets me mad,” Obama said, tears rolling down his cheek.

“That changed me, that day,” he said, after being introduced by Mark Barden, whose 7-year-old son was killed in the shooting. “My hope earnestly has been that it would change the country.” After that tragedy, the Democratic president failed to persuade Congress to toughen U.S. gun laws. He has blamed lawmakers for being in the thrall of the powerful National Rifle Association gun lobby group.

Obama, comparing the issue to the great civil rights causes of his time, is set to discuss gun violence again during his State of the Union address next Tuesday.

Obama laid out executive action he is taking to require more gun sellers to get licenses and more gun buyers to undergo background checks. Under the changes, the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is issuing guidelines intended to narrow exceptions to a system that requires sellers to check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to determine whether buyers have criminal records, are charged with crimes or have mental health conditions that would bar them from owning a gun.

The proposal is “ripe for abuse” by the government, said Chris Cox, an official with the NRA, in a statement, adding that the group will continue to fight to protect Americans’ constitutional rights.

Legal challenges to the changes, which are contained in guidance from the ATF, are expected.

The crucial question in any direct legal challenge will be whether the ATF guidance creates new obligations, or merely clarifies existing law.

The more the Obama administration acts as though the guidance has created a new legal requirement, the more legal trouble it might invite, said Lisa Heinzerling, administrative law professor at Georgetown University.

The stocks of gunmakers Smith & Wesson Holding Corp and Sturm Ruger & Co Inc have climbed since the announcement. On Tuesday, Smith & Wesson ended up 11.1 percent to $25.86 a share and Sturm Ruger closed up 6.8 percent at $65.54.

    REPUBLICANS VOW TO FIGHT

Republican leaders were quick to denounce Obama’s gun changes, with most Republican candidates for the 2016 presidential race promising to reverse his actions if they win the White House.

Reince Priebus, the head of the Republican National Committee, said the changes were “all about burnishing the president’s legacy and boosting Democrat enthusiasm in a presidential election year.”

Republicans who control Congress made it clear that they oppose the changes, although some downplayed their significance.

“Ultimately, this executive ‘guidance’ is only a weak gesture -a shell of what the president actually wants,” said Kevin McCarthy, leader of the Republican majority in the House of Representatives.

    Democratic candidates praised the moves

Chris Murphy, U.S. Senator, Cheshire, Connecticut said, “I’m proud to stand with President Obama on the actions he’s taking to prevent gun violence”.

He made an impassioned plea for supporting President Obama’s move and for making Congress to  act to  control guns. : “For three years, Congress has failed the families of Newtown and victims of gun violence across the country”, Murphy said. .

“While Congress, bitterly divided over partisan politics, has been stalled on this issue, the rest of America has continued to grieve. Countless families have felt the pain and heartache of losing a loved one to gun violence — the same horrifying sting felt by those 26 families in Newtown on December 14, 2012.

“I represent those families in Congress. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t witness their pain, or share their utter bewilderment in our failure to do something about it.

“But we also remember the strength and resiliency of the Newtown community. We remember the teachers who protected those kids, who died shielding them with their bodies. We remember the first responders who rushed in to help. And we remember the millions of acts of kindness and gifts and phone calls that came in from the rest of the world.

“This is the spirit behind President Obama’s executive actions to reduce gun violence. He is doing what he can to prevent future gun violence because he knows that, as Americans, we cannot just close our eyes and blindly accept this as the status quo — especially when it threatens the safety of our children.

“Some of my colleagues in Congress have already raised their objections over these steps. Here’s my message to them: Stop listening to the gun lobby. If they listened to gun owners instead, the vast majority of whom support sensible steps to keep guns out of the wrong hands, this debate would be over already.

“We would have already acted. We would have passed universal background check legislation. We would have made straw purchasing and gun trafficking federal crimes to give law enforcement the tools to combat the flood of illegal weapons across state lines. We would have passed a ban on high-capacity magazines. We would have made it impossible for those on the FBI’s terror watch list to purchase a deadly firearm. Instead, we’ve done nothing.

“We should be listening to victims and families across the country who have been calling on us to act and do what we can to make the world safer for their children.

“But the President can only do so much — it’s up to Congress to do more. We must stand up to the gun lobby and do we what we can to prevent what happened in Newtown from ever happening again.

“What greater responsibility do we have?”

What Obama  Executive action aims to do?

Keep guns out of the wrong hands through background checks

    • The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is making clear that it doesn’t matter where you conduct your business-from a store, at gun shows, or over the Internet: If you’re in the business of selling firearms, you must get a license and conduct background checks.
    • ATF is finalizing a rule to require background checks for people trying to buy some of the most dangerous weapons and other items through a trust, corporation, or other legal entity.
    • Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch has sent a letter to States highlighting the importance of receiving complete criminal history records and criminal dispositions, information on persons disqualified because of a mental illness, and qualifying crimes of domestic violence.
    • The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is overhauling the background check system to make it more effective and efficient. The envisioned improvements include processing background checks 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and improving notification of local authorities when certain prohibited persons unlawfully attempt to buy a gun. The FBI will hire more than 230 additional examiners and other staff to help process these background checks.

Make our communities safer from gun violence

    • The Attorney General convened a call with U.S. Attorneys around the country to direct federal prosecutors to continue to focus on smart and effective enforcement of our gun laws.
    • The President’s FY2017 budget will include funding for 200 new ATF agents and investigators to help enforce our gun laws.
    • ATF has established an Internet Investigation Center to track illegal online firearms trafficking and is dedicating $4 million and additional personnel to enhance the National Integrated Ballistics Information Network.
    • ATF is finalizing a rule to ensure that dealers who ship firearms notify law enforcement if their guns are lost or stolen in transit.
    • The Attorney General issued a memo encouraging every U.S. Attorney’s Office to renew domestic violence outreach efforts.

Increase mental health treatment and reporting to the background check system

    • The Administration is proposing a new $500 million investment to increase access to mental health care.
    • The Social Security Administration has indicated that it will begin the rulemaking process to include information in the background check system about beneficiaries who are prohibited from possessing a firearm for mental health reasons.
    • The Department of Health and Human Services is finalizing a rule to remove unnecessary legal barriers preventing States from reporting relevant information about people prohibited from possessing a gun for specific mental health reasons.

Shape the future of gun safety technology

    • The President has directed the Departments of Defense, Justice, and Homeland Security to conduct or sponsor research into gun safety technology
    • The President has also directed the departments to review the availability of smart gun technology on a regular basis, and to explore potential ways to further its use and development to more broadly improve gun safety.

Mayor de Blasio Announces Guaranteed $15 Minimum Wage for All City Government Employees

NEW YORK CITY (TIP): Mayor Bill de Blasio announced, January 6, a $15 minimum wage for all City government employees and employees who provide contracted work for the City at social service organizations – meaning that by the end of 2018, approximately 50,000 additional employees will see their wages boosted to $15 an hour, making New York City a national leader in the fight to raise the wage.

“We know that nothing does more to lift up working families and move our economy forward than raising wages – and the City is leading by example by doing just that for these 50,000 additional New Yorkers,” said Mayor de Blasio. “From pre-K and affordable housing, to paid sick and parental leave, we’re taking real action for working New Yorkers.”

Under current contracts, wages are already ahead of the minimum wage increase that has been proposed in Albany. However, most contracts expire in 2017 or 2018. Mayor de Blasio’s announcement today guarantees that all employees will make $15 an hour by the end of 2018, regardless of whether their contract expires beforehand. The City will immediately work with municipal unions and social service providers to sign letters of understanding that guarantee the increased wages.

Mayor de Blasio has long fought for a $15 minimum wage on the State and federal levels. New York City is doing what is in its power and guaranteeing increased wages for its own employees. Raising the minimum wage is a key part of Mayor de Blasio’s OneNYC goal of lifting 800,000 New Yorkers out of poverty over the next ten years.

Today’s news follows Mayor de Blasio’s announcement last month that he will provide six weeks fully-paid parental leave to all 20,000 unrepresented managerial and original jurisdiction employees – allowing employees to take up to 12 weeks, when combined with existing leave – and immediately move to negotiate the same benefit with municipal unions.

    CLIMATE DEAL: DISASTER AVERTED?

In the early evening of December 12, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius banged the gavel in a conference hall in Le Bourget, marking the unanimous approval of 195 nations of a monumental pact: a global deal aiming to curb global warming to below 2ºC.

Greenpeace activists, demanding 100% renewable energy at Climate March 2015 in Madrid.
Greenpeace activists, demanding 100% renewable energy at Climate March 2015 in Madrid.

The Paris Agreement is seen as the most important document produced in more than two decades of climate negotiations. In a historic first, all participating nations gave their approval to a climate-related deal, and the epic failure of Copenhagen in 2009 seemed like a distant memory. In the lead-up, host nation France and the United Nations made an all-out diplomatic push, urging countries to think about future generations.

Many analysts, observers, and experts said the deal is imperfect, with many issues still unresolved or left open for discussion, including climate finance and the issue of loss and damage. But the deal is a good start: The world now has a reference point as it tries to put the brakes on this disaster called climate change.
