In today’s fast-paced world, ultra-processed foods have become a staple in many households. From packaged chips, instant noodles and frozen meals to sugary breakfast cereals, soft drinks and processed meats, these convenient options save time but may come at a significant cost to long-term health. Mounting scientific evidence suggests that diets rich in ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are associated with a higher risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers. Now, researchers are increasingly finding that these foods may also raise the risk of cognitive decline and dementia.
While occasional consumption is unlikely to cause harm, experts warn that regularly relying on ultra-processed foods for a substantial portion of daily calories may negatively affect brain health over time. The findings highlight the importance of choosing fresh, minimally processed foods to support healthy ageing and reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases.
Ultra-processed foods are industrially manufactured products made mostly from refined ingredients, additives and substances extracted from foods rather than whole ingredients. They often contain artificial flavours, colours, preservatives, emulsifiers, sweeteners and other additives designed to improve taste, texture and shelf life.
Common examples include packaged snacks, cookies, cakes, sugary beverages, instant soups, ready-to-eat frozen meals, processed meats such as sausages and hot dogs, flavoured yogurts with added sugars, energy drinks and many fast-food items.
These foods are typically high in salt, sugar and unhealthy fats while being low in fibre, vitamins and essential nutrients.
Several large observational studies have found that people who consume the highest amounts of ultra-processed foods tend to have a greater risk of developing dementia compared with those whose diets consist mainly of fresh or minimally processed foods. Research suggests that replacing even a small proportion of ultra-processed foods with healthier alternatives-such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains or legumes-may be associated with a lower risk of cognitive decline.
Although these studies do not prove that ultra-processed foods directly cause dementia, they indicate a strong association that warrants attention.
Scientists believe several biological mechanisms may explain the relationship between ultra-processed foods and declining brain health.
Many ultra-processed foods promote chronic, low-grade inflammation throughout the body. Persistent inflammation is believed to contribute to damage in brain cells and has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia
