  • UN lauds India’s improved disaster risk management

UN lauds India’s improved disaster risk management

UNITED NATIONS (TIP): Lauding India’s improved disaster risk management and accuracy of its meteorological department, the UN has said timely warnings on cyclones have helped “dramatically” reduce mortality during natural calamities.

The global assessment report on disaster risk reduction released by the United Nations said that the accuracy of forecasts made by the Indian Meteorological Department has greatly improved over the years.

It cited the 2013 cyclone Phailin that hit Odisha, saying “in a significant improvement” from previous years, warnings were disseminated four days before the cyclone made landfall.

“The cyclone made landfall in a pre-electoral period, meaning that both the national and state governments deployed all available resources to ensure that the disaster was well managed and its impacts minimised,” the report said.

Comparing the casualty figure of 9,843 in the 1999 super-cyclone that had hit Odisha, the report said no more than 47 people died during Phailin.

“This dramatic reduction in disaster mortality has been attributed to improvements in disaster risk management effected by the Odisha State Government,” it said.

The report further said that the case of Odisha is indicative of a trend in which improving development conditions and strengthened disaster management lead to dramatically reduced mortality, at least in those events for which warning is possible.

The report said that success stories from countries like Bangladesh, Chile, India, the Philippines in their disaster preparedness “show that timely and effective warning and communication coupled with risk information and a prepared population significantly reduces mortality.”

According to the report, an annual global investment of six billion dollars in disaster risk management strategies would generate total benefits in terms of risk reduction of 360 billion dollars.

“For many countries, that small additional investment could make a crucial difference in achieving the national and international goals of ending poverty, improving health and education and ensuring sustainable and equitable growth,” the report says.

While countries are devoting resources to disaster management, the report stresses that more needs to be done to foster a culture of prevention and incorporate disaster risk reduction into the post-2015 development agenda.

The report also noted that the cost of disasters worldwide has reached an average of USD 250 billion to USD 300 billion every year, urging countries to increase their commitments to strengthen their population’s resilience.

The report, produced by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, stresses that the economic losses caused by disasters are also hindering countries’ paths to achieve sustainable development, making risk reduction central to social, economic and environmental progress.

“If we do not address risk reduction, future losses from disaster will increase and this will impact countries’ capacity to invest money in other areas such as health and education. If we do not take the necessary measures now, it will be difficult to achieve development, let alone sustainable development,” said UN secretary general’s special representative on disaster risk reduction Margareta Wahlstrom.

“The report is a wake-up call for countries to increase their commitment to invest in smart solutions to strengthen resilience to disasters,” Wahlstrom said, adding that they will have an opportunity to do so at the third conference on disaster risk reduction taking place in less than two weeks in Sendai, Japan.

At the conference, countries will adopt a framework to success the hyogo framework for action.

Born in 2005 out of the world conference on disaster reduction, the framework is a 10-year plan, the first to detail the work that is required from all different sectors and actors to reduce disaster losses.

The report added that in many countries, climate change is magnifying risks and increasing the cost of disasters.

  • SMOKING DEATHS HIGHER THAN FIGURES REPORTED: STUDY

SMOKING DEATHS HIGHER THAN FIGURES REPORTED: STUDY

AUSTIN, TEXAS (TIP): While many of the dangers of smoking have been well known for some time, new research shows that the consequences may be larger and deadlier than previously thought.

According to the U.S. Surgeon General, 21 different causes of death are attributed to smoking, with some 480,000 deaths in the United States each year. A study co-authored by epidemiologist Brian Carter with the American Cancer Society examined the corollary health impacts even further.

“We identified at least six new causes of death that we think are probably associated with smoking,” Carter said, “and if you look at these as an aggregate, that would add about 60,000 deaths per year to that 480,000 number.”

The additional smoking-related death links include kidney failure, hypertensive heart disease, infections and various respiratory diseases, Carter said. The study looked at data covering about 1 million people from 2000 to 2011 and was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The analysis also found an association between smoking and increased mortality rates for breast and prostate cancer, and Carter said the links to these deaths and the others identified should spur more scrutiny.

“I think researchers really need to look at them in a much more focused manner to see exactly how smoking might cause these diseases,” he said. “If they’re replicated in other more focused studies, I think they need to be incorporated into annual estimates of the number of deaths caused by smoking.”

Current estimates, which don’t take into account the additional health issues outlined in the study, put the number of smoking-related deaths in Texas at 28,000 per year.

The study is online at nejm.org. U.S. data is atcdc.gov.

  • SET YOUR ACHING BACK RIGHT

    SET YOUR ACHING BACK RIGHT

A backache can make you miserable, rendering daily routines difficult to achieve and a constant reminder that something’s not right. Even though back pain may slow you down, you can now get rid of back pain, if you follow these guidelines.

    Set it right

Backaches are rarely very serious, unless a slipped disc or strained spinal column is rendering you immobile. Very often, small corrections in postures and habits go a long way in alleviating back pain.

    Sleep well

Most people with backache complain of stiffness when they wake up in the morning. While a small amount of stiffness if expected after hours of rest, a pain in the back is unacceptable. Your mattress could be the culprit – either too soft to support your spine as you sleep, or too firm to let your muscles rest. If not your mattress, it could be a lingering problem that you may have ignored.

    Get help

Flip your mattress to distribute your weight evenly over it. Also, do a simple stretching exercise when you wake up every morning. Some people experience back pain if they don’t sleep enough. If you can, take a couple of days off from work simply to rest your back. If the pain is acute, you will need medical help.

    Don’t sleep too much

However, those with back pain would do well to not rest too much in bed. Says Dr Rahul Shringare, orthopaedic surgeon, “Too much bed rest weakens the back further. You should engage yourself in moderate activity like walking, but not running or gardening.”

    Get help

Alternate your periods of rest with periods of activity. Avoid gymming or running that will strain your back. However, do light stretching so that your back gets exercise and does not ‘freeze’.

    Exercise

Though some people give themselves a backache by overdoing their exercise routines, it is exercise that can rescue them. However, the workout you do must be approved by a certified trainer and your doctor, if you’ve consulted one.

    Get help

Walking keeps the spine and back in a neutral position, so it’s a good exercise. Yoga also helps alleviate backache. Try ‘sarpasan’ for a strong back – lie down on the floor with your palms placed under your shoulders. Slowly lift your back (without lifting your feet off the ground) keeping your elbows at not more than 60 degrees angle. Hold for three seconds, then release. Repeat laps of 10 and do two sets.

    Better posture

Slouching at the computer, suddenly bending to pick up an object off the floor, even coughing while bending over, can give you painful back spasms that take days to heal. Though you will do damage even with a rigid back at all times, you must remember to sit up straight at work or at home, and to avoid putting pressure on the lower back, support your lumbar with a firm pillow when you sit.

    Get help

Always bend your knees when you bend over. Keeping the knees locked and your legs straight when bending puts tremendous pressure on your spine. Every once in a while, get up from your seat and stretch, take a short walk around the office. Keep your back as straight as you can without feeling pressure in the lumbar. Your shoulders must be aligned in a straight plane, instead of rounded inwards.

    Avoid massaging a sore back

Wrong exercise or a blunt trauma can bruise and inflame your back muscles, causing swelling. Most people wrongly assume that massage creams and oils are to be applied on swollen, painful areas of the body -these are only to be used on aching parts that are not inflamed or swollen.

    Get help

If your back is swollen, apply an ice pack till the swelling goes down. After this, apply heat pads to repair the tender muscles in the painful area. Do not rub with a massage cream, it will only tear the tender muscles and tissue.

    Strengthen your abs

It seems strange, but it is true that if your ab core is weak, it will strain your back further. People with strong abs are found to experience less back pain than others.

    Get help

Strong abs does not mean a six-pack, but a core that can easily do crunches or flips without spasms. Get a fitness trainer to prescribe exercises for stronger abdominal muscles. Also consider exercises for hamstrings, chest and calves.

Another church vandalised by miscreants in India – Mangaluru

Mangalore 25th Feb: In an another case of disturbing communal peace in the coastal city, unidentified miscreants targeted St. Joseph’s church, Deralakatte on the outskirts of the city here on Tuesday night. This follows the church attacks in New Delhi.

The window panes and door of the St Joseph Church were damaged but the statues within remained untouched. The church, located beside a graveyard in an isolated place, is 250 years old and was renovated 10 to 15 years ago.

The incident came to light when the church authorities noticed some broken window panes and damaged doors the next morning.

Fr. Vincent, Parish priest of the church told newskarnataka that the miscreants pelted stones on the statue of Mother Mary placed outside the old chapel, which is named after St. Joseph Vaz.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Minister UT Khader said that the church was attacked by some ‘anti-social elements’ and assured that culprits will be brought to book very soon.

“Some anti-social elements threw a stone and damaged the glass of a statue to create insecurity and panic in society,” Khader said.

This incident took place just few days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowed to protect all religious groups. His comments were seen as a response to a series of attacks on churches in capital in last three months.

  • Swine Flu outbreak in India with over 16,000 affected & section 144 imposed in Ahmedabad

Swine Flu outbreak in India with over 16,000 affected & section 144 imposed in Ahmedabad

Swine flu claimed 51 more lives, taking the death toll to 926. The H1N1 virus has, so far, affected more than 16,000 people across the country.

According to collated data from the Health Ministry till February 24 this year, the total number of deaths due to the disease has reached 926 while the number of affected persons in various states stood at 16,235. The data released by the ministry on Tuesday had showed that 875 people had died due to the disease, while 15,413 people had been affected.

Rajasthan continues to be the worst affected state, with 234 deaths till February 24 while the number of affected persons has risen to 4,884.

Ahmedabad district collector invoked the Criminal Procedure Code’s Section 144 here on Tuesday, prohibiting mass gatherings without prior permission in order to prevent swine flu, an official statement stated.

“It has come to our notice that swine flu cases have been on the rise in Gujarat including Ahmedabad. The virus, which causes swine flu, is contagious and generally infects people by entering through nostrils and mouth mostly at crowded places,” the Ahmedabad district collectorate statement said.

In Maharashtra, the death toll has risen to 112 while the number of affected persons was 1,221. Telangana, Karnataka and Punjab too have witnessed 54, 39 and 38 deaths respectively. In Delhi, the Health Ministry said that although the number of deaths is eight, there has been a rise in the number of affected persons which currently stood at 2,456, reported PTI.

Assuring that the government was taking a serious view of the issue, Health Minister J. P. Nadda warned people to be careful but said there was no need for panic as medicines and facilities to tackle the disease were in place.

While responding to members’ concerns in the Rajya Sabha, Mr. Nadda said the government would leave no stone unturned to tackle the issue while assuring that there was no shortage of medicines and swine flu testing facilities were being provided free of cost at specified government hospitals.

Upping the ante against the government over the rising death toll due to swine flu, Congress accused it of approaching the issue in a “casual manner”.

“Health Min statement on Swine Flu confirms our fear that government is taking a casual approach on an issue that qualifies as a public health crisis,” tweeted Ahmed Patel, political secretary to Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

  • CDC Warns of New Deadly Tick Borne Virus Found in Kansas

CDC Warns of New Deadly Tick Borne Virus Found in Kansas

Now, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified a new illness-causing pathogencarried by ticks. Instead of a bacterium, however, a Kansas man fell ill and died after becoming infected by a new strain of virus transmitted via a tick bite.

At this time, the CDC and Kansas health officials are still trying to determine if there are any other cases. According to Bloomberg Business, the virus is being called “Bourbon” after the country in which the man lived.

The Bourbon virus belongs to a group of viruses known as thogotovirus, a genus in the Orthomyxoviridae virus family, which includes various influenzas including the famous Influenza virus A that causes all flu pandemics. However, as reported in an article published about the Bourbon virus in the CDC’s Emerging Infectious Diseases journal, this is the first time a member of the thogotovirus genus has caused a human illness in the U.S.

Before his infection, the Kansas man had been engaged in outdoor work when he discovered an engorged tick lodged on his shoulder and decided to visit his doctor. A few days later, he fell ill and suffered from headaches, fevers, nausea and muscle aches. However, over the course of two weeks, the man’s condition worsened until he experienced massive organ failure and died eleven days after his visit to the doctor.

Though this is the first time a thogotovirus has been identified in the Western Hemisphere, viruses with similar viral genomes have been found in other parts of the world including Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia though none have been known to cause human disease. In addition to being transmitted by ticks, authorities also believe the Bourbon virus may be transmitted by mosquitos as well.

Currently, the CDC has developed blood tests to more quickly identify cases of Bourbon virus infections in other individuals who present with similar symptoms, but test negative for tick-borne illnesses such as ehrlichiosis or Heartland virus disease. Though researchers and clinicians have very limited information about the virus and its course of infection, the authors of Friday’s study warn “the public health burden of these pathogens has been underestimated.” Still, the authors hope that by combining new methods of pathogen identification (i.e. next generation sequencing) with “classical microbiologic techniques,” more discoveries about this virus will soon be made.

  • QUIT THAT SMOKE

    QUIT THAT SMOKE

Smoking tobacco is both a physical as well as a psychological addiction. The nicotine from smoking tobacco provides a temporary and addictive high to the mind and body.

Regular smokers when they quit experience physical withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Listed below are methods to help you quit the bud and recover.

  • AFTERNOON NAP IS BAD FOR YOUR TODDLER

AFTERNOON NAP IS BAD FOR YOUR TODDLER

An afternoon nap may affect your toddler’s overall sleep quality, suggests new research.

Napping beyond the age of two lengthens the amount of time it takes for a child to fall asleep (sleep onset) and shortens the overall amount of night-time sleep he or she has, the findings showed.

“The impact of night sleep on children’s development and health is increasingly documented, but to date there is not sufficient evidence to indicate the value of prolonging napping,” wrote the researchers led by Karen Thorpe from Queensland University of Technology in Australia.

The researchers wanted to find out what impact napping has on young children’s night-time sleep quality, behaviour, cognition and physical health. They therefore reviewed the available published evidence for napping in children up to the age of 5 years, and found 26 relevant studies out of a total of 781. They pooled the data and synthesised the findings.

They found consistent, if not particularly high quality, evidence indicating that napping affects night time sleep of kids beyond the age two.

The links between napping and any detrimental impact on behaviour, development, and overall health, however, were less clear-cut, largely because of the differences in age and napping patterns of the children studied.

  • ADD NEEM TO YOUR DAILY ROUTINE

ADD NEEM TO YOUR DAILY ROUTINE

Replete with medicinal benefits, neem leaves have a special significance during Gudi Padwa when it is eaten with jaggery.

The bittersweet mixture symbolises the acceptance of sorrow and happiness. Here are some reasons to include neem in your daily routine.

    Clears acne

Using neem water as a skin toner regularly will help in clearing acne, scars, pigmentation and blackheads. Boil about 20 neem leaves in half a litre of water till the leaves are soft and discoloured, and the water turns green. Strain and store in a bottle. Dip a cotton-ball into it and wipe your face.

    Lightens skin blemishes

Apply a paste of neem powder, tulsi and sandalwood powder mixed with rose water, on your face. Let it dry before you rinse it off with cold water.

Treats dry skin: Did you know that neem has moisturising properties? Mix neem powder with water and a few drops of grapeseed oil, and apply it to your face as a moisturiser.

    Delays ageing of skin

With its regenerative properties, neem helps the skin fight pathogens below its surface. As a result, your skin remains supple. Reduce the effects of ageing by applying neem oil on your face or adding neem powder to your face-pack.

    Treats dandruff

Neem has medicibal properties. Boil neem leaves with water until the water turns greenish. Use it after shampooing. If you are suffering from dandruff, you could also apply a paste of neem powder and water on your scalp and wash off after an hour, followed by shampoo and conditioner.

    Cures dark circle problems

Neem helps in reducing pigmentation and also acts as a moisturising agent. Mix water and neem powder to make a thick paste and apply it around the eyes. Wash it off after 15 minutes.

    Cures asthma

According to experts, neem oil is extremely beneficial when it comes to curing breathing problems or asthma. Have a few drops of neem oil every day, increasing the intake gradually. It also helps in controlling phlegm, cough and fever.

    Heals ulcers

According to various studies, neem bark extract has been found to cure stomach and intestinal ulcers. Researchers believe that consuming the bark extract twice daily for 10 weeks, practically heals ulcers. The bark also helps cure malaria and many skin diseases.

    Controls diabetes

The plant contains chemicals that help reduce blood sugar levels. Neem acts as insulin after being digested by the body.

    Treats mouth and tooth problems

Traditionally, people chewed neem twigs instead of using toothbrushes. The twig’s antifungal and antibacterial properties are said to help in treating mouth and tooth problems.

  • HOME REMEDIES TO GET RID OF LARGE PORES

HOME REMEDIES TO GET RID OF LARGE PORES

Open pores are one of the most disturbing skin problems ever. If left untreated and neglected, it aggravates and leads to blemishes and breakout. Here are a few simple ways to treat large and open pores at home:

Squeeze the juice of one lemon and mix it with honey. Apply the mixture on your skin and leave it for 20 minutes. Wash off with warm water and pat dry. The natural enzymes present in honey and the acidic nature of lemon juice helps in shrinking the pores and tightens the skin.

Mash a few pieces of ripe papaya and apply it on a clean face. Known for its excellent exfoliation properties, papaya cleans the open pores and removes blackheads.

Ice works miraculously in tightening and shrinking open pores. Clean your face with a mild face wash and rub ice on your face. This cold treatment is also beneficial in removing dirt from the pores.

Whip three tablespoons of yogurt in a bowl and apply it directly to your face. Leave it on for 15 minutes and wash off with cold water. The lactic acid in yogurt helps in reducing the size of the pores.

Use a pack of fuller’s earth mixed with rose water to tighten and shrink the pores. It helps in making skin healthy and removes sun tan. You can use this pack twice a week for best results.

  • Indian-American Surgeon Dr Dinesh Vyas on a Mission back in India to save lives

Indian-American Surgeon Dr Dinesh Vyas on a Mission back in India to save lives

Indian-American surgeon Dr. Dinesh Vyas who is an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at Michigan State University since 2011 is on a mission to save thousands of lives that are lost on Indian roads every day with an innovative training programme for trauma first responders using a $200,000 simulator dummy.

“It’s a shameful figure for me as a physician,” he told IANS in an email interview outlining his strategy that could easily save at least half of the road accident victims, most of whom are sole earning members of their families.

I can change the trauma situation with my existing team of 40 US surgeons and 50 Indian faculty members in the next four years,” said Mr Vyas.

He visits India four times a year to build up collaboration across the country to make it a self-sustaining process.

His team is also in touch with state governments in several states including Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan and Telangana, 15 medical schools and NITI Ayog to extend the programme across India.

“We plan to start at least 50 centres across India each costing $700,000 with roughly two centres in every state,” said Dinesh Vyas whose team has trained more than 400 people in the last four months.

Starting cost of the programme is at least $20,000. “Most of it is borne by me and the host institute bears some cost of logistics,” Mr Vyas said.

“We take the simulators on loan at this point from the company at a subsidised rate to keep cost down for the initial phase,” he added.

Some leading corporate houses have also shown interest in the project, he said. His team is also trying to raise money through the CSR funds of foundations interested in Indian road safety or health needs.

“It gives a unique opportunity to NRI academic surgeons to pull together, central and state governments, with various private and government medical schools contributing and building a system for trauma care,” he said.

“Our research team has improvised the programme over the last 7-8 years with more than 20 visits to India and other countries to design the programme and curriculum,” said Mr Vyas.

The programmes are largely conducted in native language with sophisticated simulator dummies and other equipment and educational videos followed by question- answer and video debriefing sessions to enable all trainees to learn from their and others’ mistakes.

Another key feature is that it’s a “Trainer-Trainee programme: meaning we train both trainers and trainees during our visit and observe local trainers educate more trainees,” Dinesh Vyas said.

Run by a faculty of all dialect speakers from India recruited with the help of the Asian Studies Centre at Michigan State University, “This programme will train and educate people who cannot join the training centres we are starting in India,” Mr Vyas said.

“This helps us to identify the most involved, thoughtful, articulate and critical trainers to run and build a sustainable, high quality, motivated programme,” he said.

Later, the team stays engaged with the local trainers providing support through video conferences.
  • Taliban suicide attack in the heart of Pakistan Lahore hits police headquarters kills six

Taliban suicide attack in the heart of Pakistan Lahore hits police headquarters kills six

A suicide bomber has attacked a police building in eastern Pakistan. A splinter group of the Pakistani Taliban said it was in retaliation for recent executions.

The suicide bomber on Tuesday killed atleast six people and himself in a brazen attack on police headquarters in Pakistan’s eastern city of Lahore, in what militants called a revenge bid for the recent hangings of colleagues.

It was the third in a series of high-profile attacks in the last month triggered by a government decision in December to begin hanging those convicted of terror attacks, reversing an informal six-year moratorium on the death penalty.

“We claim the attack in Lahore because the government is killing our men in prison,” said Ehsanullah Ehsan, a spokesman for powerful Taliban splinter group Jamaat-ul-Ahrar. “Such attacks will go on,” promised the group’s spokesman, Ehsanullah Ehsan. In December, the Pakistani government lifted a moratorium on the death penalty following an attack on an army school in the northwestern city of Peshawar.

“We will get revenge for every man and our struggle will continue until sharia is instituted in the country,” he said, referring to Islamic law.

In the Pakistani incident, Punjab police chief Mushtaq Sukhera said a policeman and four civilians were among the dead. Jam Hussain, a spokesman for the emergency services, said six bodies had been recovered along with the attacker’s.

At least 23 people were injured, said Khawaja Salman Rafique, health adviser to the chief minister of Punjab.

Casualties would have been much greater if the police had not been alert and kept out the bomber, Lahore police chief Amin Wains told reporters at the attack site.

“It was a suicide blast, the bomber blew up prematurely outside the police offices,” he added. “That he could not enter the offices shows our security was successful.”

Ali Raza, the owner of a shop nearby, said the blast had been powerful enough to knock over one of his employees, and left body parts strewn in the street.

  • Former illegal immigrants eligible for ‘amnesty bonuses’ – to get tax refunds

Former illegal immigrants eligible for ‘amnesty bonuses’ – to get tax refunds

Millions of immigrants benefiting from President Obama’s executive actions could get a windfall from the Internal Revenue Service, a reversal of fortune after years of paying taxes to help fund government programs they were banned from using.

Armed with new Social Security numbers, many immigrants who were living in the United States illegally will be able to claim up to four years’ worth of tax credits designed to benefit the working poor. For big families, that’s a maximum of nearly $24,000, as long as they can document their earnings during those years.

Advocates argue that many immigrants pay taxes, so they should be able to claim the same tax credits as anyone else. During the past decade, illegal immigrants have paid an estimated $100 billion in Social Security payroll taxes, even though few will be able to collect benefits, said Stephen Goss, Social Security’s chief actuary.

Obama has issued executive orders shielding about 4 million immigrants from deportation. Some were brought here as children; others are parents of children who are American citizens or legal residents.

Republicans in Congress oppose Obama’s actions and are trying to use a funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security to overturn them. Democrats are resisting, resulting in a stalemate that threatens to shut down the department.

Funding for the department, which oversees immigration enforcement, will run out on Feb. 27.

The dispute over tax credits illustrates the complicated relationship that many immigrants have with the tax system. Social Security estimates that illegal immigrants work at about the same rate as the rest of the population, even though federal law bars them from employment.

For those who work and pay federal income taxes, the IRS provides them with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. Since 1996, the IRS has issued 21 million such numbers. About a quarter of them are in use, the agency says.

The IRS accepts these tax returns without reporting the taxpayers to immigration authorities, IRS Commissioner John Koskinen said. That encourages the workers to pay taxes.

“We don’t enforce the Social Security laws. We don’t enforce the immigration laws,” Koskinen said of his agency. “In fact, the reason illegal immigrants file taxes with us is they know we aren’t sharing that data with anybody. We treat it as taxpayer-protected information.”

Even if immigrants pay taxes, they are ineligible for most federal programs. They cannot legally get food stamps, unemployment benefits, Pell grants or federal student loans. They cannot get Medicaid, except for emergency medical services, and are ineligible for subsidies under Obama’s health law. They can claim some federal tax breaks if they file tax returns, but until now, they were not eligible for Social Security, Medicare or the Earned Income Tax Credit, one of the government’s largest anti-poverty programs.

Obama’s executive actions will offer Social Security numbers to these immigrants, something that eventually could make them eligible for Social Security and Medicare.

More immediately, they could take advantage of the EITC. Last year, the credit provided low-income workers with about $70 billion.

The credit is popular among conservatives because it rewards work — the more you work, the bigger your credit, as long as your income does not exceed certain limits. It is popular among liberals because it provides cash payments to low-wage workers, even if they do not make enough money to pay federal income taxes.

Once the immigrants receive Social Security numbers, they can file tax returns claiming the EITC, as long as they meet the income requirements and can document their earnings.

    There’s more.

They can file amended tax returns for up to three years after they were due, which means these immigrants can claim tax credits going back as far as 2011.

The maximum credit for families with three or more children is about $6,000, so some could get as much as $24,000 in credits.

Some members of Congress are outraged.

“The administration may have blown open the doors for fraud with amnesty bonuses of more than $24,000 to those who receive deferred action,” said Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb. “This program severely undermines the White House’s lip service to enforcing the law, and would increase the burden on law-abiding taxpayers.”

Advocates for immigrants say that if these workers are paying taxes, they should get the same benefits as other taxpayers.

“Let’s not forget that these workers receive the lowest wages for what they contribute to their communities and local economies,” said Ellen Sittenfeld Battistelli, policy analyst at the National Immigration Law Center. “What do we as a nation gain by further impoverishing them?”

  • EAT BERRIES TO LOSE WEIGHT

    EAT BERRIES TO LOSE WEIGHT

No need to skip a meal or head to a gym as easy ways to lose a few pounds — not anymore. Replacing just one between-meal confectionery snack with a handful of berries can do the trick as well.

Research shows that when people swapped a confectionery treat for a berry snack with the same energy content, considerably fewer calories were consumed at their next main meal.

This suggested that a simple change in habit alone could reduce a person’s calorie intake by nearly 1,000 calories a week, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

The reduction in calories would be expected to produce a loss of around 0.45 kg of body fat per month, and much more if consumed alongside exercise and other healthy-eating choices, according to researchers.

Seasonal Berries commissioned Loughborough University to conduct the research.

Lewis James from the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University, that conducted the research, said anyone who does the simple swap could feel the effects on their health and waistline. “Our research shows that an afternoon snack of mixed berries decreases energy intake at dinner. It’s a simple method that might help people control and lose weight,” said James.

“There are a number of potential health benefits of consuming berries, but this is the first time that consuming them as a snack has been shown to reduce how much people eat during the next meal of the day. The cumulative effect of the reduced calories could help people lose the extra pounds without them having to make an effort, or even noticing,” added the expert.

In the research trials, which were carried out over four months, 12 participants tested the effects of swapping a confectionery snack with a handful of berries – strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries – with the same energy content.

  • WAYS TO BOOST YOUR MEMORY

    WAYS TO BOOST YOUR MEMORY

Not many of us can boast of a sharp memory, and those who do, certainly seem to have an edge professionally and personally as well. We’re not recommending any magic pill to boost your memory but rather some tips that will help you do so:

    Clench your fist

This may sound weird but research suggests that balling up your right hand and squeezing it tightly actually makes it easier to memorise phone numbers or shopping lists. Later, when you want to retrieve the information, clench the left fist. Researchers think the movements activate brain regions key to the storing and recall of memories.

    Alphabets to the rescue

When you’re trying to recall a piece of information such as the name of an actor in a film but just can’t seem to do so, use the alphabet search method. Basically, go through the alphabet to find the first letter of the word or name you are trying to remember in order to jog your memory. This trick really works.

    Exercise more frequently

This is no rocket science because many studies have shown that aerobic exercise improves cognitive function and is particularly good at enhancing memory. Also, exercise is believed to encourage the growth of new brain cells in the hippocampus – an area of the brain important in memory and learning.

    Ditch drinking at night

Alcohol may help you fall asleep but it leads to a disrupted night’s rest. Moreover, it has a harmful effect on concentration and memory, opine researchers. Not to forget the more you drink, the less deep – or REM – sleep you get.

    Say the words out loud

Perhaps, the easiest of all methods for remembering anything is to say the words out loud, be it remembering where you put your car keys or what you need from the shop or revising for a test, say memory experts. Studies found that saying what you want to remember out loud to yourself – or even mouthing it – will help with recall.

    Kick the butt

If you thought smoking only leads to cancer, you’re wrong. A separate study found that middle-aged smokers performed less well on tests compared with those without the tobacco habit.

    Give yourself a cue

If there’s something you have to do every day at a specific time and often forget, a technique called implementation intentions can help you. For example, say to yourself ‘On my way home, I have to pick up clothes from the dry cleaners.’

    Get visually speaking

A type of memory aid involves using imagery or visuals rather than words. For example, a classic way of remembering a person’s name is to try and imagine it (or something associated to it) on the person’s face. Psychologists have found that the more bizarre and vivid the image, the better it works.

    Consume more milk

For study purposes, scientists asked subjects to fill in detailed surveys on their diets for tests to check their concentration, memory and learning abilities. They found that subjects who consumed dairy products at least five or six times a week did far better in memory tests compared with those who rarely ate or drank them.

    Don’t overeat

Eating too much can double the risk of memory problems in old age, according to an American research. Studies found a high-calorie intake can substantially increase the risk of developing mild cognitive impairment, or MCI, characterised by memory loss, which can precede dementia.

    A walk in the park

A study found people who walked around a garden did 20% better on a memory test than those who walked around streets.

    Dance away

Not only do music lovers perform better in cognitive tests, but research has also shown the beneficial effects of music on those with Alzheimer’s disease. It is believed that music with strong rhythms and patterns, like reggae and salsa, are best for memory and problem-solving. In fact, the more complex the dance, the more the brain will be challenged.

  • REDUCE SALT FOR A HEALTHIER LIFE

A new study has stressed that reducing sodium intake should be a major public health priority for governments and nongovernmental organizations to improve population health.

While higher blood pressure is linked with cardiovascular disease, a diet high in sodium is known to cause high blood pressure, vascular and cardiac damage, stomach cancer, osteoporosis, and other diseases.

Almost 1 billion adults worldwide have hypertension, and 17-30 percent of these cases can be attributed to excessive sodium consumption.

In developed countries, almost 80 percent of sodium intake is from processed food.

And the researchers led by Dr. Kevin Willis, at Canadian Stroke Network, have said that the regulation of the food industry by the government will bring about the most effective change, although immediate voluntary action is desired.

“A population-wide reduction in sodium intake could prevent a large proportion of cardiovascular events in both normotensive and hypertensive populations. For example, a population-wide decrease of 2 mm Hg diastolic blood pressure would be estimated to lower the prevalence of hypertension by 17 percent, coronary artery disease by 6 percent and the risk of stroke by 15 percent, with many of the benefits occurring among patients with normal blood pressure,” wrote Willis.

The researchers recommend that national public health policy be focused on reformulating processed food, educating consumers, labelling food clearly, and setting timelines to meet these targets.

  • WAYS TO KEEP YOUR SKIN LOOKING YOUNG

WAYS TO KEEP YOUR SKIN LOOKING YOUNG

You might not know what it is, but collagen is the key when it comes to keeping your skin youthful and wrinkle-free.

Collagen is a protein produced by our cells that helps “hold” the skin together, giving it firmness and elasticity. When we’re young, our skin stays plump and smooth because it constantly regenerates itself. But as we age, collagen production slows -and existing collagen can get damaged due to sun exposure and bad skin habits.

    The results?

Wrinkles and sagging skin. Luckily , there’s lots you can do to preserve your collagen and even boost its production…

UP YOUR VITAMIN C IN TAKE

A study published in the American Journal of Nutrition found women over 40 with the highest amount of vitamin C in their diet were less likely to develop wrinkles than those who consumed lower levels.”Vitamin C is crucial to the formation of collagen. Without it, amino acids can’t be linked to form the protein,” says dietitian Jo Travers, “Good sources are red pepper, dark green leafy vegetables like broccoli and sprouts, tomatoes, oranges and kiwi fruit.” Skincare products that contains vitamin C is also thought to encourage collagen repair (it’s usually listed on the label as Lascorbic acid, ascorbyl palmitate or ascorbyl phosphate).

    STOP SMOKING

“Smoking creates enzymes called matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), which damage the collagen in your skin; hence the telltale sagging which many smokers are betrayed by,” says consultant dermatologist Dr Nick Lowe.

    STAY SUN SAFE

Sun exposure is a prime suspect for hastening collagen loss. “UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and damage the deep collagen support structures there,” says Dr Lowe, “My advice would be to wear an SPF15 broad spectrum cream (one that protects against UVA and UVB rays) through the year.”

    REACH FOR RETINOL

Retinoid creams -only available on prescription -have been proven to help boost collagen production. “Retinoids reduce substances in the skin that break down collagen after sun exposure and also target receptors in the skin which increase the production of collagen,” says Dr Maria Gonzalez. You can get your hands on milder forms of retinoid in over-the-counter retinol creams.

CUT BACK ON THE STUFF SWEET

According to Dr Patricia Farris, eating too much sugar can be a beauty disaster. It causes premature ageing of the skin by a process called glycation. This is where excess sugar in the blood attaches itself to lipids, nucleic acids and proteins (especially your collagen) to form “advanced glycation end products” or AGEs, which accelerate the ageing process and cause wrinkly skin.

    EXFOLIATE

Exfoliation -removing the top, dead layer of skin -helps speed up the natural process of skin and collagen renewal, says Amanda Elias, founder of a skin care brand. “My favourite way to b exfoliate is with chemical exfoliants such as glycolic acid and lactic acid. They dis solve the glue-like substance that substance that bonds dead skin to the surface rather than sloughing it away like scrubs do, and give a more even scrubs do, and give a more even r result, leaving skin looking healthier and more radiant.”

ADD ANTIOXIDANTS TO YOUR SKINCARE REGIME

Antioxidants help protect against free radicals that can cause ageing skin.”The term `free radical’ describes a damaged skin cell,” says Amanda.”It’s `free’ because it’s missing an elec tron (healthy cells have two electrons, a damaged cell has one). “Free radicals attach themselves to healthy skin cells and basically suck out the electrons they need, leaving healthy skin cells damaged. This process triggers an enzyme in the skin that breaks down collagen. Antioxidants help by neutralising the free radical so that it doesn’t have to feed off our healthy skin cells.”

Sip on green tea -it contains antioxidants called catechins -and eat foods high in lutein, an antioxidant found in green leafy veg like spinach. Look for creams and serums containing antioxidants, too.

    PLANT PROTEINS, PLEASE

The menopause can make us wrinkly because, as we age, our oestrogen levels drop. Because oestrogen is vital to making healthy collagen, creases and crinkles can creep in to our skin. Lots of foods contain plant oestrogens (phytoestrogens) that can help replace the effects of lost oestrogen. Try hummus, nuts, soy and pinto beans. Look for face creams containing phytoestrogens.

    MASSAGE

“Massaging your face daily will help boost the production of collagen, give skin a more plump appearance and help stimulate the lymph glands to promote clear skin,” says Nichola Joss, a skincare expert. “Use a collagen boosting oil,” she adds.

  • BRITAIN BANS DRIVERS FROM SMOKING IN CARS

LONDON (TIP): Britain on February 11 banned drivers in England from smoking in their cars if they are carrying children as passengers.

The move will become a law on October 1 and follows a similar ban in Wales.

Scotland is also considering introducing a ban. Anyone found flouting the law in England could be fined £50.

The regulations were passed in the Commons after 342 MPs voted in favour of legislation while just 74 voted against. Parliament therefore approved regulations which will make smoking in cars carrying children illegal.

Public health minister Jane Ellison said “Three million children are exposed to second hand smoke in cars, putting their health at risk. We know that many of them feel embarrassed or frightened to ask adults to stop smoking which is why the regulations are an important step in protecting children from the harms of second hand smoke”. The regulations will not apply to a driver on their own in a car.

Second-hand smoke is particularly harmful to children as they breathe more rapidly and have less developed airways. Children being exposed to second hand smoke results in more than 300,000 GP consultations and 9,500 hospital admissions every year. The government estimates that 3 million children in England are exposed to second hand smoke in their family car, which puts them at risk of serious conditions, including respiratory infections and meningitis and triggering asthma.

A survey by the British Lung Foundation found that 86% of children who are exposed to smoking in cars would like the smoker to stop, yet only 31% actually feel able to ask them to do so.

  • Was BJP’s Loss In Delhi Intelligently Planned?

Was BJP’s Loss In Delhi Intelligently Planned?

There were enough signs to indicate what you see in Delhi may not be true at all.

BJP is a very well organized outfit with sympathizers in every layer of government, judiciary, media, commerce and industry. It is unlikely all this is happening due to poor management. Then is all this ‘bad management’ part of a deliberate plan to lose Delhi? A lot actually.

    Here are some reasons why:

1: BJP inducted three rejects of India Against Corruption movement and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) into its fold — Kiran Bedi projected as BJP’s chief ministerial candidate, Shazia Ilmi and Vinod Kumar Binni. As per plans Bedi is BJP’s scapegoat to save Modi’s image.

2: Kejriwal’s Delhi WIN will be projected as a victory of a mass movement, media will eulogize Kejriwal, hail him as a hero and will dissect AAP’s campaign for days. Also this will divert attention of the people who are getting restless from Modi’s inability to deliver on his election promises.

3: Kejriwal will have no honeymoon period, both media and voters will demand immediate results, at least on corruption, power tariffs, VAT (value added tax), health hotline and WiFi. A hostile government at the Centre will not help him either. This spotlight on Kejriwal will come as a huge relief for Modi.

4: Sangh Parivar machinery can now unleash its foot soldiers to polarize voters with low-intensity disturbances ahead of the two big battles — Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Bihar.

5: BJP’s top brass is aware that if the party plans to win Delhi, the state will remain a headache — partly due to Kejriwal in opposition and partly because of impatient voters who expect immediate results and good governance, something the BJP is unsure of delivering. Proving that losing Delhi isn’t such a bad idea!

6: Now BJP can deploy numerous tactics to not let Kejriwal do what he want’s thus proving him a failure in Delhi. BJP team knows that many of the promises by kejriwal are impractical and cannot be fulfilled and this will snatch his ‘Nayak'(Hero) image.

7: This undeliverable performance of Kejriwal will surely break his image through out the country making him unpopular in other states limiting his scope in next Lok Sabha Elections.

8: Now the One-Man-Army AAP will not be able to spread itself in other states nationwide because the face(Kejriwal) of party will be busy managing Delhi for next 5 years. And there is no other mob-attractor face in AAP.

9: BJP knows that if they win Delhi, Kejriwal in Opposition will make their life hell and will criticize their every action if its not the best one.

10: Now the media houses have 2 faces Modi and Kejriwal to criticize. BJP knows this will surely save Modi from being the only target of media & mass criticism.

    [vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

Emergency contraceptive pill is a pill used by women after having an unprotected intercourse (sex), to prevent her from getting pregnant. It is also known as morning after pill or postcoital pill. However, morning after pill is a misleading term, because it can be used immediately after having sex or within 72 hours of having sex. With constant research this method has been developed which is very effective in preventing unwanted pregnancy with very less side effects and is very easy to use also.

    [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

Miss.xyz, 22yrs came with severe pain in the abdomen for over 2 hours. On a regular enquiry into her history, she menstruated 10 days back which was less in amount as compared to her previous cycles. In closer enquiry, she confirmed that she had taken an emergency contraception after an episode of unprotected sex. I investigated further and diagnosed her to have ruptured right sided tubal pregnancy. As a result she was advised and had to undergo laparoscopic surgery to control the bleeding and was discharged after one day of her stay at the hospital.

    [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]

My discussion in this article is about whether this drug should be made as an over the counter medicine i.e. it can be available without any prescription. There have been lots of discussion about this and there are groups of people both in favor and against.

The argument in favor of it is that many couples would hesitate to take any help from the physician and also have inhibition to take it. Unmarried couple would generally avoid having any discussion about it and therefore avoid going to the physician. With increasing awareness about this method of contraception among the people, if it is not made available without prescription, it would not serve the purpose of being an effective emergency contraception.

Argument against the use making it OTC drug is that it would increase the rate of sexual activity amongst the teenage population. It would also increase the incidence of unprotected intercourse increasing the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases. It would also make the use of regular contraception which provides a better protection less favored.

The new emergency contraceptive pill containing levonrogesterol (1.5 gms), is very effective in preventing intrauterine gestation if taken within 72 hours. The main side effect of it is that it causes nausea, vomiting, giddiness and in few women it can also cause some amount of bleeding after 2-3 days. It is advised not to take it multiple times in the same cycle as it increases the chances of failure. The inadvertent use of over the counter way of use of such pills has made this as one of the new cause of ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy is when the pregnancy is located outside the normal uterine cavity. It is a life threatening condition and also a cause of maternal mortality.

The exact causes of increased ectopic pregnancy in using this contraception are not known. Probably due to
    –   The inherent mechanism of action by which it acts in preventing pregnancy. By reducing the chances of the pregnancy the over all rate of ectopic pregnancy and intrauterine pregnancy is low, but when pregnancy occurs it being ectopic becomes more common.
    –   Levonrogesterol acts on the fallopian tube and decreases the motility of the tubes. As it does not prevent ovulation, any fertilized egg has a tendency of getting implanted in the tube.
    –   This method of contraception does not prevent pelvic infection. Recurrent pelvic infection is the known cause for increased rate of ectopic pregnancy.
    –   Multiple use of emergency contraception in the same cycle decreases the effectiveness of the method and predisposes to increased chances of ectopic pregnancy.

WHO studies have shown that it does not increase the overall rate of ectopic pregnancy. It means that by reducing the chances of pregnancy, it reduces the overall rate of ectopic pregnancy. Yet if pregnancy happens, it is more likely to be ectopic pregnancy than a natural conception.

Emergency contraceptive pill is a novel method of emergency contraception but also a new cause of ectopic pregnancy. I do not support the concept of universal and easy availability of such emergency contraceptive pills until there is adequate sex education in the population. The other methods of contraception which have a higher efficacy and time tested should always be more propagated than this.

Barrier contraception which also provides protection against sexually transmitted diseases is the best choice. Proper use and availability should be more focused upon than using emergency contraceptive pill.

And If emergency contraceptive pill has to be used then it is beneficial to consult a physician at least once before or after the use. Couple needs to be educated upon certain dos and don’ts about the method.

Prevention is better than cure, always. Be safe be happy

  • LUNG CANCER KILLS MORE WOMEN THAN BREAST CANCER

LUNG CANCER KILLS MORE WOMEN THAN BREAST CANCER

Lung cancer has surpassed breast cancer as the leading cause of cancer death in females in developed countries and the change reflects the tobacco epidemic in women, according to a report released Wednesday by the American Cancer Society and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).

Lung cancer has been the top cancer killer for men for decades in developed countries. It is also the leading cancer killer in men in developing countries, where breast cancer still kills more women than lung cancer, Xinhua news agency cited the report as stating.

The report, released on World Cancer Day, was based on the worldwide estimates of cancer incidence and mortality produced by the IARC for the year 2012.

Overall, an estimated 14.1 million new cancer cases and 8.2 million cancer deaths occurred globally that year.

Among the cancers, lung cancer was the most commonly diagnosed, with 1.8 million cases, accounting for about 13 percent of total cancer diagnoses. Lung cancer is also the leading cause of cancer death in men and the second leading cause in women worldwide, with 1.1 million deaths in men and nearly 500,000 deaths in women.

However, in developed countries, it now kills more women than breast cancer, the report said, noting the change reflects “differences in the stage and degree of the tobacco epidemic”.

In several Western countries, where the tobacco epidemic began earliest and peaked by the middle of the past century, such as the US, Britain, and Denmark, lung cancer rates have been decreasing in men and plateauing in women, it said.

Lung cancer rates are also decreasing in men, but continuing to increase in women, in countries where the tobacco epidemic peaked later, such as Spain and Hungary.

In countries where the epidemic has been established more recently and smoking has just peaked or continues to increase, such as China, Indonesia, and several countries in Africa, lung cancer rates are likely to continue to increase for at least the next few decades without large-scale interventions to accelerate smoking cessation and reduce initiation, it warned.

Specially, the report singled out China, saying lung cancer rates among women in China were higher than rates among women in some European countries despite a lower prevalence of smoking.

“This is thought to reflect indoor air pollution from unventilated coal-fueled stoves and cooking fumes,” it wrote. The report, however, believed measures such as tobacco control, vaccination for liver and cervical cancers, early detection, and the promotion of physical activity and healthy dietary patterns could prevent “a substantial proportion” of the worldwide burden of cancer.

It called for “a coordinated and intensified response” from governments, civil society, the private sector, and individuals around the world.

  • ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS EVERY WOMAN NEEDS

    ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS EVERY WOMAN NEEDS

Women, don’t take your health for granted. Ensure that these nutrients are a regular part of your diet…

    Calcium

Women have a tendency to suffer from weak bones, especially as they age. This is why calcium is so very important to build strong bones. An estimated 30 million women suffer from osteoporosis in India. And while awareness has increased in recent years, women still need to wake up to the importance of calcium in their diet. Ensure you consume plenty of dairy products. Fortified juice, yogurt and soy milk are great sources of calcium.

    Iron

A deficiency in iron can cause anaemia — a very common problem among women. Iron gets oxygen to your cells and a lack of it makes you lethargic and tired. Include lean meat like chicken and turkey as well as fortified cereals and beans in your diet.

    Vitamin D

The calcium you consume will be useless if your body does not produce adequate vitamin D, which helps your body absorb calcium. Vitamin D is found in fish like tuna and salmon as well as in fortified orange juice.

    Folic acid

While folic acid is very important for pregnant women, it is essential for the rest as well. Experts say that folic acid helps your cells divide and is found in green, leafy vegetables, juices, beans, fortified cereal and nuts.

    Protein

An important nutrient in building healthy bones and muscles, protein also fights germs, breaks down everything you eat and controls your metabolism. Found in poultry, red meat, fish and nuts, studies say that women require at least 45 grams of protein daily.

    Fibre

Not only does fibre keep your blood sugar and cholesterol levels in check, it also help you digest your food better. Fibre is found in vegetables, fruits, whole-grain breads and cereals, nuts and beans.

    Vitamin C

Want healthy bones and glowing skin? Make sure you’re getting enough vitamin C. Stock up on red pepper, broccoli and citrus fruits. Drink orange juice at least thrice a week.

    Omega-3 fatty acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are ‘good’ fats known to reduce the risk of heart disease. And you can find it in fish like sardines, salmon, herring, trout and mackerel. Walnuts and flaxseeds also contain omega-3 fatty acids.

  • HOMEMADE FACE PACKS FOR TAN REMOVAL

HOMEMADE FACE PACKS FOR TAN REMOVAL

Sure you have waited for long to go for that vacation and enjoy a little tanning session. But then when you come back home you realise that the little tan sessions went too ahead leaving you with tanned hands, face and practically the whole you. So here are certain home remedies which will help you to get rid of tanned skin.

Cucumber, Rose Water and Lemon Juice

While lemon acts as natural bleach, cucumber and rose water acts as cooling agents. In a small bowl take a table spoon each of cucumber juice, lemon juice and rose water and mix in well. Apply the mix with cotton on tanned areas and keep it for about 10 minutes. Then wash it off with cold water. Apply this pack every day after you get back home from the sun.

    Gram flour and turmeric mix

Mix two tablespoons of gram flour with a pinch of turmeric, a tablespoon of milk and a table spoon of crushed orange peel in a bowl with cold rose water. Apply the mix on clean face and let it dry for about 15-20 minutes. Once the pack dries, slowly remove the pack by scrubbing gently in clockwise and anti-clockwise direction; the exfoliation effect will help in removing the tan.

    Oat Meal and Butter Milk

While butter milk is an excellent source for soothing skin and healing blisters and oatmeal is a great natural scrub. In a bowl mix two tablespoon of oatmeal with three-four tablespoons of butter milk and apply on tanned areas. Gently massage in circular motion; let it stay for 15-20 minutes and cleanse with water.

    Milk and strawberry

Not only is this combination a healthy one, it also helps in improving skin complexion and reduction of dark spots, freckles and even pigmentation. Take four-five crushed strawberries and mix it with two tablespoons of milk cream and apply it on face. Let it stay for about 20-30 minutes. Rinse it with fresh water.
