Indian-American jeweler indicted in multi-million dollar international trade fraud

NEWARK, NJ (TIP): An Indian jeweler has been indicted for illegally evading customs duties for millions of dollars of jewelry imports into the US and operating unlicensed money transmitting businesses, a US attorney has said. Monishkumar Kirankumar Doshi Shah (39) — based out of both Mumbai and New Jersey –was arrested over the weekend and appeared on February 26 before US Magistrate Judge André M Espinosa in the Newark federal court. Shah alias “Monish Doshi Shah” was released on a bond of USD 100,000, with home detention and location monitoring. He has been charged on a complaint with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and one count of operating, aiding and abetting the operation of an unlicensed money transmitting business.

From January 2015 through September 2023, Shah engaged in a scheme to evade duties for shipments of jewelry from Turkey and India to the US, according to documents. He would ship or instruct his conspirators to ship goods from Turkey or India, which would have been subject to an approximately 5.5 per cent duty if shipped directly to the US, to one of Shah’s companies in South Korea, these stated.

Federal prosecutors alleged that Shah’s conspirators in South Korea would change the labels on the jewelry to state that they were from South Korea instead of Turkey or India, and then ship them to Shah or his customers in the US, thereby unlawfully evading the duty.

He would also make and instruct his customers to make fake invoices and packing lists to make it look like Shah’s South Korean companies were actually ordering jewelry from Turkey or India.

During the scheme, Shah shipped millions of dollars of jewelry from South Korea to the US, prosecutors alleged.

From July 2020 through November 2021, Shah operated numerous purported jewelry companies in New York City’s Diamond District, including MKore LLC (MKore), MKore USA Inc. (MKore USA) and Vruman Corp (Vruman), it said. He used these entities to conduct millions of dollars in illegal financial transactions for customers, including converting cash to checks or wire transfers, the documents said.

Shah would also collect cash from customers and use conspirators’ jewelry companies, also located in the Diamond District, to convert the cash into wires or checks.

The documents said that at times, Shah and his conspirators moved more than a million dollars of cash in a single day. In exchange for their services, Shah and his conspirators charged a fee.

Prosecutors said that none of Shah’s or his conspirators’ companies were registered as money transmitting businesses with New York, New Jersey, or the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN).

  • Indian student charged with family members’ triple murder

Indian student charged with family members’ triple murder

TRENTON, NJ (TIP): A 23-year-old Indian student has been arrested and charged for allegedly murdering his grandparents and uncle inside a New Jersey condominium, police and US media reports said.

Om Brahmbhatt is accused of shooting Dilipkumar Brahmbhatt, 72; Bindu Brahmbhatt, 72; and Yashkumar Brahmbhatt, 38, the South Plainfield Police Department and the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement. Officers responded to the home on Coppola Drive off New Durham Road in South Plainfield around 9 am on Monday, November 27, after a neighbor reported hearing shots fired at the Traditions condo complex, the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office said in a press release.

After arriving, officers found three people — two men and a woman — had suffered gunshot wounds.

Married couple Dilipkumar and Bindu Brahmbhatt were found shot to death in the second-floor apartment, police said. Their son, Yashkumar Brahmbhatt, was also found to have suffered multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to the hospital, where he died. A suspect was taken into custody for questioning at the scene and later charged. Om was charged with three counts of first-degree murder and second-degree weapon possession. Om, hailing from Gujarat, resided with the victims and was found at the residence when authorities arrived at the scene. Om had just moved to New Jersey within the past couple of months, sources said, and had been living at the condo, NBC New York reported.

He was taken to the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Centre pending a pre-trial detention hearing; it wasn’t immediately clear whether he had an attorney and a listed number for him couldn’t be found.

According to the complaint, the crime was committed with a handgun Om says he purchased online. Om had a seemingly calm demeanor during Tuesday’s court appearance. Police say he was the one who called 911 that morning and when asked about who did it, officials say Om stated, “It might be me”. It was not clear what led up to the shooting. A neighbor told NBC New York that it wasn’t the first time police had been called to the condo.

“I didn’t really know them, I just know one time the police were there for a domestic violence call,” said neighbor Jim Short, who lives upstairs from the unit where the three people were found dead. “Can happen anywhere but it is really creepy, it’s right downstairs.”

The Traditions apartment complex, home to many young families who emigrated from India, is equipped with dozens of security cameras that neighbors hoped could help police.

“There’s cameras all over and there are cameras coming in and out of the complex and every building has cameras outside and inside the breezeway. So hopefully that can help,” said another neighbor, Victor Orozco.

An investigation led by the South Plainfield Police Department is ongoing. Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to call town police or the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

An investigation by South Plainfield Detective Thomas Rutter and Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Javier Morillo determined that there was no threat to the public and this was not a random act of violence, according to the prosecutor’s office.

Anjaria pleaded guilty on October 31, before US District Judge Michael E. Farbiarz in Newark federal court to information charging him with conspiracy to violate the Federal Anti-Kickback statute and conspiracy to commit health care fraud, a media release said.

Anjaria’s sentencing is scheduled for March 12.

According to court documents from February 2017 to May 2022, Anjaria participated in a kickback and bribery scheme with orthotic brace supply companies, telemedicine companies, and testing laboratories, resulting in the submission of false and fraudulent claims to Medicare.

Anjaria controlled a marketing company in India through which he and his conspirators identified Medicare beneficiaries to target for orthotic braces and cancer genetic tests (CGX).

  • Sikh mayor of Hoboken city in New Jersey gets letters threatening to kill him, family

Sikh mayor of Hoboken city in New Jersey gets letters threatening to kill him, family

HOBOKEN, NJ (TIP): The Indian-origin Sikh mayor of Hoboken city in the US state of New Jersey has opened up about being the target of a series of letters that threatened to kill him and his family. The letters, which he received last year, first called on Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla, who is a practicing Sikh, to resign, but then began threatening his and his family’s life, targeting him for his Sikh faith, CBS News reported on Tuesday, October 17.

Bhalla, however, told CBS News in an interview that he and his family were standing strong and that hate was not welcome in his city.

Bhalla, who was first elected for the post of Hoboken mayor in 2017, said: “I’m very proud to lead this city as an American of Sikh background.” He won again in 2021 after running unopposed.

For a man who always wears his turban with pride, Bhalla said he had been the target of threatening messages. “Our family began receiving a series of letters in the mail,” he said. The first, more than a year ago, asked him to resign, and then a second letter threatened his life.

“The third threat, the most jolting, came soon thereafter and said, ‘This is your last warning. If you don’t resign immediately, we will kill you, we’ll kill your wife, we’ll kill your children,” he recounted. One letter read: “It’s time to kill you.” “There was a lot of angst, anger, a lot of hate, combined with actual threats upon my life and the life of my children and my wife,” Bhalla said.

It was enough for law enforcement agencies to provide the mayor with 24-hour security, including for his two children at school. “My biggest concern was for my kids. I signed up to be mayor, but my kids didn’t sign up to this type of behavior,” Bhalla said.

Bhalla said during the same time he was receiving these threatening emails, his neighbors, his brother and a few city colleagues began receiving packages with sexually explicit and threatening materials. He said the person responsible for those was caught and charged, but the person behind the threatening letters is still out there. Bhalla is well aware of the backlash Sikh-Americans endured after 9/11.

“As a Sikh-American, I’m a proud American and I want people to be treated equally,” Bhalla said in response to a question on his experience as a Sikh politician 22 years after the attack that shook the entire country. “There still is a strain of extremism in America, and it’s just unfortunate to see that small strain is somewhere in Hoboken, as well. And I think that’s what needs to be called out and that’s what people need to know about so that we can eventually put an end to it through education and through love,” he said.

  • Indian-American arrested in New Jersey in USD 13 million tech fraud

Indian-American arrested in New Jersey in USD 13 million tech fraud

The count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison

NEWYARK, NJ (TIP): An Indian American has been arrested in New Jersey on charge of being part of a technical support scam that targeted more than 7,000 victims defrauding them of more than USD 13 million, a US Attorney announced Thursday, August 31.

Charged with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, Manoj Yadav appeared before US Magistrate Judge José R. Almonte in Newark federal court.

“The defendant and his conspirators are alleged to have misled their numerous victims into thinking that they were a legitimate technology support company affiliated with a major software company,” US Attorney Philip R Sellinger said. After claiming to provide technical support for issues involving the software company’s popular accounting software, they allegedly charged the victims exorbitant fees for purported support services that were not authorized by the software company, he alleged.

“We allege Yadav lied to software users and forced them to pay for services that would usually come free with their initial purchase,” FBI Special Agent in Charge James E Dennehy said.

The count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a fine of USD 2,50,000 or twice the gross profit or loss caused by the offense, whichever is greatest.

“The amount he’s accused of stealing from his victims and the number of victims seem shocking; however, we are seeing an incredible increase in all types of tech support scams. The fraudsters are pretty savvy in how they con money out of people, even those of us who think we’re smart enough to not fall for it. If you think you’re a victim, please reach out to the FBI,” Dennehy said.

According to federal prosecutors, from 2017 through 2023, Yadav and his conspirators, many of whom were in India, fraudulently held themselves out as a technology support company affiliated with a major US business and accounting software company that developed and sold a widely used accounting software product.

They operated under multiple fraudulent business names, including “Phebs Software Services, LLC,” “Phebs Software Services,” “PN Bookkeeping Services,” “Phebbs Consulting,” “Quickbooks Tech Assist,” “Quickbook US,” “Quickbooks Accounting,” and “Quickbooks Support Team.” According to court documents, the conspirators would contact victims under the guise of fixing technical issues they faced with the accounting software. After receiving tech support from the conspirators under these fraudulent pretenses, the victims would either be charged exorbitant fees or additional subscription fees.

These “services” were all fraudulent: They would not cost any additional money for customers who contacted the actual software company, and the software company never authorized Yadav or his conspirators to act on its behalf or charge any fees.

Yadav personally participated in the scheme by charging the victims for the fraudulent technology support services and funnelling millions of dollars from these victims to his conspirators, it alleged, adding that he fraudulently obtained these funds through the Phebs Software Services, LLC, which he himself formed.

That entity did business as both “Phebs Software Services” and “Quickbooks Accounting.” Yadav also used these entity names to falsely hold himself out to banks and victim customers as an accounting company legitimately affiliated with the software company. He did this to prevent charge backs, Better Business Bureau complaints, and the closure of bank accounts. Yadav sent his conspirators over USD 13 million in funds obtained from victims and would routinely keep approximately 17 per cent when he wired funds to the conspirators, it said.

NEW YORK (TIP): Despite of administration’s strict warning against Price Gouging, Indian businesses, particularly grocers are taking advantage of the situation and  indulging in price gouging . It is really a shame they are hoarding and selling essential items  at 5 times to 10 times of the original price. They may have made some extra money but at the cost of the  fair name of India. A white guy wondered why he was being asked to pay @$4 for a small bottle of sanitizer when its original price is $1. And the receipt does not mention the item. It simply says grocery.

Same with other essential items , like water bottles. A case of water bottles normally costing  3.99 max was being sold by a Hicksville grocer for $14.99. The receipt  says grocery.

The same grocery store charged $1.00 for a roll of tissue paper, which normally sells for 50 cents.

Many  Indian grocery stores (fairly big ones) in Hicksville and Richmond Hill have raised prices on a variety of items, like lentils, flour, rice etc. from 25% to 50%, adding to the woes of people already suffering under the difficult circumstances, consequent upon the outbreak of Coronavirus.

An Indian grocery store in Jersey City charged $6.99 for a bottle of sanitizer which normally sells for $1.00.

Stores like Costco and Walmart  may not have certain items available, but they haven’t indulged in price gouging.

One finds no price tags. Receipts do not mention the commodities for which higher prices are charged. Instead, the receipt says “grocery” .

We urge consumers to not submit to their being fleeced and  report the matter to Consumer Affairs department or call 311 in New York City and 211 elsewhere.

Report price gouging, in your interest and in the interest of America.

Follow administration’s advisory to keep yourself and America safe.

    God bless America!

“I don’t see any scenario where this doesn’t bleed meaningfully into May,” he said.

New Jersey, which has about 9 million residents, ranks second in the United States in total coronavirus cases, after New York.

NJ Governor Phil Murphy begins Economic Mission Trip to India September 13

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ(TIP):  With great expectations, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy  leads a seven-day, six-city economic mission trip to India  beginning September 13.

The delegation will visit six cities, including Delhi, Agra, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Gandhinagar. The focus of the mission is to strengthen economic ties with one of New Jersey’s largest trade and investment partners, cultivate international investment opportunities in the Garden State, and deepen cultural and educational ties between New Jersey and India.

“As India’s role as one of our key partners continues to expand, we want to make sure we maximize the potential of our economic relationship,” said Governor Murphy. “I am excited to make the case for New Jersey as a leading investment choice for Indian companies, creating lasting partnerships and good jobs for our residents. We are proud to be the home of one of America’s most deeply-rooted Indian American communities and growing our economic partnership will only strengthen those ties.”

Governor Murphy’s activities and public events will include meetings with key government and industry leaders, including representatives of the life sciences, technology, clean energy, film and media, and manufacturing sectors, as well as company visits and announcements. New Jersey maintains very close ties with India culturally and economically, as India is New Jersey’s second largest foreign direct investor and Indian Americans represent the largest group of foreign-born residents in New Jersey. Moreover, over 50 percent of India’s foreign direct investment in the Northeast comes to New Jersey.

“We are thrilled to be part of Governor Murphy’s economic mission to India in September,” said Jose Lozano, President & CEO of Choose New Jersey. “New Jersey is a leader in the life sciences, medical technology, clean energy and manufacturing, and we are the best place for international companies to do business. We look forward to strengthening our close cultural and economic ties with our partners in India during this trip and attracting more businesses to invest in the Garden State.”

“In our increasingly interconnected world, driving international trade and investment is critical to making New Jersey a global competitor and building a foundation for long-term, sustainable economic growth,” said NJEDA Chief Executive Officer Tim Sullivan. “As the country with the third largest GDP in terms of purchasing power, India is already a formidable player in the international economy and the country’s influence is only continuing to grow. Governor Murphy’s trip is an important step forward that will pave the way for new business partnerships between New Jersey and India and bring more investment and jobs to the Garden State.”

Governor Murphy will lead the delegation, which includes First Lady Tammy Murphy, Choose New Jersey President and CEO Jose Lozano, New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) CEO Tim Sullivan, and other senior administration and Choose New Jersey officials. Throughout the trip, the delegation will showcase New Jersey’s innovation ecosystem and highlight why New Jersey is the best place for the international community to do business.
