About Stephen Zaima
Stephen Zaima is an artist and Professor Emeritus at Syracuse University who lives and works in the Hudson Valley. At Syracuse University, Zaima taught studio art and art criticism both on campus and in off-campus programs in New York City, Los Angeles, London, Florence, and Berlin. His online survey classes covered art in America, China, and Europe. Toward the end of his time at the university, he also served as an associate dean for global programs in the College of Visual and Performing Arts. He received his MFA from the University of California, Davis.
His most recent artwork belongs to a series called VISION & TEXTUALITY, which employs an irregular formatting reflecting what he views as a fragmented, but never hopeless, view of the world. Another recent series of work is called SPELLING IT OUT and focuses in part on the Japanese American internment camps. His 2022 monograph is titled FEAR NOT. Living and traveling throughout the United States and abroad, including Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, has been an enriching experience for Zaima and continues to inform much of his work. Zaima also enjoys fly fishing and cycling, finding the Catskills an inviting environment for both of those pursuits.
