CHICAGO, IL (TIP): On a vibrant evening that blended cultural warmth with forward-thinking dialogue, the Association of South Asian Real Estate Professionals (ASARP) brought together nearly 200 real estate professionals, brokers, investors, and industry leaders at the O’Hare Lake Office Park in Des Plaines, Illinois, on Friday, May 29, 2026. The signature program, “Legal, Ethical & Professional Landscape in Real Estate,” offered more than just updates it delivered a powerful vision for how South Asian professionals can thrive amid rapid industry disruption.
The event, which featured a complimentary dinner and robust networking, opened with heartfelt remarks from ASARP leadership. Pradeep B. Shukla, a respected senior voice in the community, set an inspiring tone by celebrating resilience, change, and human connection. He shared touching personal milestones including his 45th wedding anniversary and drew parallels between historical resistance to innovation (railways, iron ships, airplanes) and today’s real estate evolution. His message was clear: adaptation is not optional; it is the path to leadership.
The centerpiece of the evening was an illuminating presentation by Rebecca Jensen, President and CEO of Midwest Real Estate Data LLC (MRED). With over 25 years of experience shaping real estate technology, Jensen delivered a masterclass on the evolving role of Multiple Listing Services (MLS). She passionately defended the Private Listing Network, explaining how it addresses real human needs—sellers facing divorce, medical challenges, construction delays, or privacy concerns. Far from being controversial, Jensen positioned the network as a compassionate tool that gives sellers grace while keeping licensed professionals fully informed.
Jensen also addressed the high-profile legal dispute with Zillow, framing it as a principled stand for fairness. “Every seller deserves equal treatment regardless of their brokerage,” she emphasized, drawing strong applause. She highlighted MRED’s international listing capabilities, opening exciting doors for ASARP members with global clientele, particularly those with ties to India and South Asia.
John Gormley, CEO of Mainstreet REALTORS®, followed with insights on organizational adaptation. He announced exciting new member benefits, including innovative health insurance solutions for independent contractors and preparations for an “Open MLS” environment. Gormley praised the collaborative spirit of Northeast Illinois real estate leadership and encouraged members to engage in shaping the future through committee participation.
The final speaker, Laurie Murphy, Director of the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) Division of Real Estate, brought regulatory clarity and reassurance. Murphy shared major updates, including the transition to a modern licensing system, upcoming renewal deadlines, and important proposed rule changes regarding the timing of written brokerage agreements. She stressed the foundational importance of Section 15-15 of the Real Estate License Act acting in the client’s best interest above all.
Murphy also addressed current industry tensions with wisdom, reminding professionals that while business models may evolve, core duties of loyalty, disclosure, and reasonable care remain constant. She encouraged ethical practitioners to file complaints against bad actors, reinforcing that regulation exists to protect the public.
Throughout the evening, themes of ethics, innovation, cultural representation, and community support resonated deeply. ASARP, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, continues to distinguish itself not only as a professional resource but as a cultural bridge, offering mentorship, political advocacy, and charitable outreach for South Asian professionals and the communities they serve.
The event concluded with gratitude to all speakers, a fun raffle, group photos, and renewed energy among attendees. Many left inspired to embrace change while staying rooted in integrity the very essence of what ASARP represents.
The ASARP event beautifully demonstrated how a community that once navigated new shores in America is now helping shape the future of one of the nation’s most important industries. In an era of technological disruption and legal complexity, South Asian real estate professionals are not merely participating they are leading with wisdom, compassion, and innovation. Their commitment to ethics while embracing change is a powerful example for all. Suresh Bodiwala Chairman of Asian Media USA proudly celebrates this remarkable community and its contribution to building a stronger, more inclusive American dream.
